Fernandes rediscovered his magic touch, but this United warrior was the real heartbeat of 2-1 win vs. Chelsea

Manchester United returned to winning ways as they beat Chelsea 2-1 at Old Trafford. Here are our player ratings from the game.

(A score of 6 is around average)

Altay Bayindir 5 – Barely had anything to do for large parts of the game but didn’t react at all for Trevoh Chalobah’s goal.

Matthijs de Ligt 8.5 – Outstanding display. Strong at the back with several key blocks and interceptions, while also pushing forward on multiple occasions to contribute to the build-up in attacking phases.

Harry Maguire 7 – Kept Joao Pedro quiet and led the three-man defence well.

Luke Shaw 8 – Played a key role in United’s second, rising highest to meet the ball and directing his header into Casemiro’s path for the finish.

Noussair Mazraoui 7 – Instrumental in United’s build-up play. Despite wing-back not being his natural role, he impressed with a few excellent deliveries into the box.

Casemiro 6 – Scored United’s second but was given his marching orders just before the break, which took some sting out of United’s game. Second yellow may have been a bit harsh.

Bruno Fernandes 8.5 – Sensational movement and finish to put United in the lead. At one point, he robbed a Chelsea player, showcased neat footwork, and unleashed a powerful strike, only to be denied by Jorgensen.

Patrick Dorgu 6 – Assisted Fernandes’ goal. Got into good positions but his final ball too often let him down, which is an area he’ll be keen to refine moving forward.

Bryan Mbeumo 7 – Another strong showing. Read Sesko’s flick brilliantly, leading to Robert Sanchez’s red card. Nearly found the net early on but couldn’t keep his effort on target. Taken off to a rousing ovation from the crowd.

Amad 5 – Improvement on last week but can still kick up a few extra levels to match his extremely high standards.

Benjamin Sesko 6 – Amazing flick into the path of Mbeumo for the red card. Unfortunate to be taken off at half-time.

Substitutes

Manuel Ugarte 4 – Failed to influence the game and didn’t provide the same authority in midfield that Casemiro had shown

Matheus Cunha 5 – United’s primary outlet in the second half as Chelsea searched for an equaliser.

Leny Yoro 4 – Didn’t get tight enough to Chalobah as Chelsea pulled one back.

Mason Mount 5 – Made little impact on proceedings, though it was encouraging to see him return to action so quickly.

Kobbie Mainoo 5 – Came on in the dying embers of the game for Fernandes.
