Fernandes focused on improvement after Fulham

Sunday 24 August 2025 20:32

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes says the Reds created the chances to emerge the winning team from Sunday’s trip to Craven Cottage.

Our skipper was left rueing missed opportunities as he spoke to Sky Sports after the 1-1 draw in our second game of the Premier League season.

It was a contest that we led after Leny Yoro’s second-half header deflected in off Rodrigo Muniz, before Emile Smith Rowe’s equaliser left United thinking about a series of missed scoring opportunities come full-time, particularly the series that came and went early in the first half.

HIGHLIGHTS | United travelled to Fulham in our opening away game of the 2025/26 campaign…

“The game was there for us, I think we created some chances, we had our opportunities to win the game,” Fernandes told Sky’s Natalie Gedra after the final whistle.

“We put ourselves in front and then we end up conceding a goal from something we were controlling very well during the full game.

“For us, it’s very frustrating not to get a win today.”

Bruno also blazed over from the penalty spot before the break – his first blank from 12 yards in a United shirt since December 2023, a run that stretches back over 11 successful efforts – and took responsibility for that rare misfire.

Our captain had explained that he was “upset” after he and referee Chris Kavanagh bumped into each other as he stepped away from placing the ball on the spot, but says that is not an excuse for missing.

“That’s not the excuse to missing the penalty, I just had a very bad hit on the ball,” Bruno told Sky.

“I took my foot too under the ball and that’s why the ball ended up going over the bar.”

Despite the disappointment, Fernandes remains focused on improvement and winning – something United have two opportunities to do in the next week.

First the Reds go to League Two outfit Grimsby Town in our League Cup opener on Wednesday night, before returning to Premier League action – and Old Trafford – with Burnley’s visit next Saturday.

“It’s normal [the external noise about not winning in the first two games of the season], when you play for Man United, you know what’s about, you know the noise that is going to be about for anything and everything.

“You just have to get used to that, to understand what you have to do to improve yourself and the team and help the team to win games.”
