Every top team around the world invariably has a physically imposing goalkeeper who guards the posts. His responsibility is to bail his team out in tricky situations and add that something extra with his ability to prevent goals.
Take your mind back to Liverpool star Alisson Becker’s performance against PSG in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 at Parc des Princes.
News – Man Utd make move, can ‘satisfy’ £43.6million asking fee to secure signing of wanted star – Report
It was a game that the French giants deserved to win on every attacking metric but the sheer quality of the Brazilian goalkeeper ensured they went back to Anfield with a 1-0 lead.
Manchester United have had such shot-stoppers in the past with David de Gea one that comes to recent memory. The Spanish wall single-handedly kept the Red Devils relevant in the Premier League for many seasons.
Since his unceremonious exit and the arrival of Andre Onana though, the goalkeeping department has been an issue for the Red Devils. The Cameroonian international has struggled to showcase consistency in a position that requires a lot of it.
Manchester United are ready to let Onana leave
Thus, a few days ago, it emerged that Man Utd were ready to let the ex-Inter Milan goalkeeper leave for around £20m and wanted to replace him with PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Now, as per Caught Offside, the Red Devils’ asking price for Onana has gone up for reasons unknown.
As per the report, Manchester United now want around £35m-£40m to part ways with the injured star this summer.
The 29-year-old is currently recovering from a torn hamstring and one wonders what changed from then to now for the English club to increase their valuation for him.
Regardless of what they sell Onana for, Man Utd are unlikely to be able to recoup anywhere close to what they paid for him if they sell him this summer.
That said, they might have to take a hit and bring in a new goalkeeper to bolster the defense.
Whether it is Donnarumma or any other potential player, what the Red Devils need is someone who can command the backline and offer a sense of security and let’s wait and see how things play out this summer transfer window.
