Two extremely popular former Manchester United men look to have secured exotic moves to kickstart their 2025.
Ander Herrera has sealed a dream transfer to Boca Juniors in Argentina, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who managed the Spanish midfielder at Old Trafford, is close to being officially unveiled as the new Besiktas boss in Turkey.
Both deals were being rubberstamped on Friday and have, unsurprisingly, generated plenty of well wishes from the United family on social media.
Treble-winning hero Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has taken up a new challenge in Turkey.
Herrera, who has long held an obsession with passionate crowds and fan culture, has signed a one-year contract with Boca, with the option of a further year, after previously being with Athletic Club.
In addition to travelling to watch a game at the iconic Bombonera, he also previously said: “If, one day, I get a chance to play in South America, I’d love to go to Boca, the biggest [club].”
He will be reunited at the Buenos Aires giants with former team-mates Sergio Romero and Marcos Rojo. Boca hitman Edinson Cavani did not play with Ander here but they were colleagues at Paris Saint-Germain and the striker spoke to the midfield man before accepting his transfer to the Reds.
Meanwhile, Solskjaer becomes the second former United manager to take on a big job in Istanbul.
Jose Mourinho is, of course, currently in charge of Fenerbahce, one of our Europa League opponents this term.
Ole, the Reds’ 1999 Treble-winning hero, touched down in Turkey on Friday morning and posed in the club scarf for Besiktas’ social-media accounts, before finalising his first role since leaving Old Trafford in November 2021.
