Fabrizio Romano: improved bid for Dorgu “imminent” as United close in on first signing of Amorim era

A new bid from Manchester United for Lecce left-back Patrick Dorgu is “imminent” according to reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Ruben Amorim is desperate for reinforcements to fill the left wing-back role, and the 20-year-old has been earmarked as a priority target.

The Red Devils saw an opening bid of a reported €27 million plus add-ons rejected earlier this week, but Romano claims they will shortly be returning to the negotiating table.

The Italian transfer guru said today: “Manchester United’s new bid for Patrick Dorgu now imminent, it will be over €30m after initial one rejected. Lecce and Man United are negotiating as Dorgu remains the top target at LWB.”

Personal terms are not thought to be an issue, with United already reaching a “basic agreement” with the young Dane, according to reports.

Lecce are reluctant to let their man go without a fight, and last year their technical director Panteleo Corvino went on the record to rule out a January move for Dorgu.

But amidst a torrid run of form, United are pushing hard for the player to fill a gaping hole in Amorim’s squad, and are willing to part with more than €30m to get the Dorgu deal done.

Established left-back Luke Shaw is yet to have a run at performing as a wing-back under Amorim due to persistent injury, and the Portuguese’s patience is wearing thin.

Tyrell Malacia is back from a long period on the sidelines and is gradually being handed opportunities, but doesn’t look up to cementing the role as his own.

Thus it has fallen mostly to Diogo Dalot, a natural right-back, to fill in at left wing-back. The Portugal international’s effort and work rate can’t be faulted, but he at times is very clearly a square peg in a round hole.

As per TEAMtalk Romano has previously claimed that there are “no doubts” that United will sign a player for the role in January, be it Dorgu or someone else.

The 20-year-old suddenly emerged as a key target after United found themselves priced out of moves for Wolverhampton Wanderers full-back Rayan Aït-Nouri and Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez.
