Fabrizio Romano claims United must take this step to avoid late twist in Alvaro Carreras deal

Manchester United have been trying all summer to sell stars such as Antony and Jadon Sancho to raise funds for future incomings.

Up to this point, they have struggled to close any deals for their own players and have been relying on sell-on fees from other clubs to generate cash.

Former academy product Anthony Elanga has been sold to Newcastle United for £55 million where the Red Devils could reportedly stand to make £8 million.

Maxi Oyedele is also reportedly on the cusp of moving to RC Strasbourg, where United would net around half of the €6 million fee.

Alvaro Carreras deal

SL Benfica left back, Alvaro Carreras, left United in 2024 to join the Portuguese club permanently but his rapid rise has seen him attract interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

News broke yesterday that after weeks of negotiations, Carreras was about to join Real Madrid after a fee was agreed between the clubs.

United do hold a buy back option but seem unlikely to use this option after signing Patrick Dorgu in January to fill the left wing back spot.

Moreover, Ruben Amorim’s side reportedly have a 20% sell-on fee for the deal.

Potential for late drama?

Fabrizio Romano reports that the transfer cannot be completed until United sign off on the deal.

Speaking on his YouTube channel he claimed, “Manchester United will have to send an email confirming to Benfica that they will not take the buy-back clause they have in the contract for Alvaro Carreras.”

The journalist claims that “Real Madrid are aware of this” and reassured fans that United “are not interested” in activating the clause and the player will go to Madrid this summer.

All clubs involved are reportedly waiting on United to “make this formal step” so the deal can go through.

United have been currently struggling to close a deal for Bryan Mbeumo and have been locked in negotiations for weeks with Brentford over a final fee.

Fans of the Red Devils will hope the sell-on fees generated over former player sales as of late can certainly help United get the Mbeumo deal over the line before they depart for their pre-season tour of the United States.
