The Football Association (FA) are looking into claims that ex-Manchester United star and Burnley midfielder Hannibal Mejbri spat at Leeds United fans over the weekend.
What happened
Mejbri was introduced to proceedings in the 83rd minute of Burnley’s 2-1 victory against Leeds at Turf Moor on Saturday.
Lesley Ugochukwu and Loum Tchaouna scored in either half to secure the Clarets just their second win of the 2025/26 Premier League season.
Mejbri received a booking in stoppage time after clashing with Gabriel Gudmundsson, following a heavy challenge on the Leeds defender near the dugouts.
After the final whistle, spitting allegations surfaced against the Carrington academy graduate.
Lancashire Police confirmed that they are investigating the incident, while the FA has also stated that it is looking into the matter.
Mejbri under investigation after allegation
Lancashire Police said in a statement [via The Athletic], “Lancashire Police are aware of an alleged incident involving a Burnley player during the second half of the Premier League game between Burnley and Leeds United at Turf Moor yesterday (October 18).”
“We are currently working with Burnley Football Club to establish the facts.”
BBC reveal that the FA are “reviewing” the spitting allegation but are yet to launch a full investigation.
Leeds are aware of the issue but have yet to issue a comment.
Per the IFAB Laws of the Game, which govern competitions under the FA, spitting at any individual is defined as violent conduct.
Mejbri joined United’s youth system in 2019, arriving from French giants AS Monaco. He progressed through the ranks to make his senior first-team debut in May 2021.
The midfielder permanently parted ways with the Red Devils in the summer of 2024 and signed for Burnley.
