Ex-United starlet set for explosive PL return after falling out of favour at Marseille – report

Manchester United have a rich history of developing young players and integrating them into the first team. The Red Devils have had an academy graduate in every matchday squad without fail for the last 88 years, an unmatched record that highlights the club’s unwavering trust in youth. However, not every promising youngster cements his place in the senior side. For every Class of ’92, for every Kobbie Mainoo, there are hundreds of others who have failed to nail down a regular place in the first team and have gone on to pursue their careers elsewhere. One of them is Angel Gomes, a promising academy graduate who joined United as a six year old and steadily progressed through the ranks at the club. The Englishman was expected to carve a name for himself at the Theatre of Dreams, but his spell at the club did not unfold as planned. Salvation in Ligue 1 Gomes earned his senior debut in 2017, becoming the youngest player to represent United since the legendary Duncan Edwards. However, with first-team opportunities hard to come by, the player ultimately left the club as a free agent in 2020, having registered just 10 appearances for the senior side. Lille secured his signature and initially sent him on loan to Boavista, where the Englishman began getting his career back on track. After a successful loan spell, he was integrated into Lille’s first-team squad and soon became a regular in the Starting XI. Gomes would go on to register 10 goals and 19 assists from 134 games for Les Dogues, before joining Marseille on a Bosman move last summer. However, a recent report relayed by The Peoples Person states that the 25 year old could be on the move again following a slow start to life at the Stade Velodrome. It now appears that a return to the Premier League could be on the cards for the English midfielder. Wolves want Gomes According to Foot Mercato, Wolverhampton Wanderers are ready to offer Gomes a lifeline this month. The Englishman has registered 20 appearances in all competitions this season, but has featured in only three of the last 10 games. The Ligue 1 club have already reinforced their midfield this month by signing Quinten Timber and Ethan Nwaneri, and are now open to Gomes’ departure. Wolves are keeping a close eye on the situation as they remain embroiled in a battle for survival in the Premier League. The Midlands club are at the bottom of the league after 23 games, with just eight points on board. They are now searching for a replacement for Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, who is reportedly on Besiktas’ radar, and Gomes has been identified as an option. The Englishman could also fill the shoes of Marshall Munetsi, who joined Paris FC on loan earlier in January. Gomes is under contract with Marseille until 2028, but could be allowed to leave for a nominal fee this month. Final Thoughts Gomes may feel that he has a point to prove after struggling for chances with United, so he could be tempted to return to the Premier League. However, the Midlands club may not be an enticing prospect for the Englishman, especially since they are 17 points adrift of Nottingham Forest in 17th, and are under real danger of getting relegated this year.
