Ex-United star shreds Amorim’s critics in passionate defence after Everton loss

Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov launched a passionate defence of Ruben Amorim, insisting the head coach is not to blame for the team’s woes. United humiliated by Everton After a promising run of form in which they went unbeaten for five games, United tasted defeat on Monday evening as they lost 1-0 to Everton. The Toffees played most of the game with 10 men after Idrissa Gueye was given his marching orders inside 14 minutes. Yet, it was David Moyes’ men who took the lead, which they held onto for all three points. United produced an uninspiring performance that saw them booed off the pitch by the Old Trafford crowd. The result left the Red Devils in 10th position in the Premier League table and three points adrift of the top four. After the final whistle, Amorim said he was to blame for the tepid display and the result. Ex-United star John O’ Shea appeared to echo these sentiments, slamming the Portuguese coach for not introducing Shea Lacey to try and change the game. However, Berbatov defended Amorim. Speaking to ESPN, the Bulgarian pointed to a lack of winning mentality as a reason behind the defeat. Berbatov defends Amorim Berbatov said, “Sometimes it comes down to the manager and we can criticise how he sticks to his system.” “At the same time, sometimes the characters on the pitch can decide the games.” “United have characters and big-name players like Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes as captain, but even that sometimes is not enough.” The 44-year-old continued, “When that culture of winning the Premier League is not there from not winning for so many years, it is difficult to get it back, and that is one of the problems.” “To be able to keep calm when the storm is going on around you, to find the right way against 10 men and to say ‘let’s not be in a hurry, we’ll find the right solution’. That was not the case [against Everton], even though there were chances to score.” “Pickford was probably the Man of the Match.” United will undoubtedly be looking to get back to winning ways when they take on Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Sunday.
