Ex-United chief gunning for top job at rival PL club after being brutally axed by INEOS – report

Manchester United’s former deputy football director Andy O’Boyle has reportedly applied for the job of loans manager at Liverpool.

O’Boyle was appointed at United in 2022, making his return to the club 16 years after he served as an academy coach.

He left his role as head of elite performance at the Premier League to support ex-football director John Murtough at Old Trafford.

O’Boyle worked with Murtough in efforts to drive United’s football strategy across the first team, academy and women’s team.

However, in September last year, he became one of the multiple executives who left the club as part of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS’ restructuring of the senior hierarchy.

O’Boyle played a crucial role in the transition period following Ratcliffe’s £1.3billion investment, which made him a co-owner of the Red Devils.

He was also heavily involved in United’s summer transfer window, in which a sum in excess of £200million was splashed on acquiring Leny Yoro, Joshua Zirkzee, Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui, Manuel Ugarte and Sekou Kone. He also oversaw a number of departures.

Now, the Daily Mail report that O’Boyle has submitted his application to become the next loans manager at Liverpool.

The newspaper notes that the Northern Irishman previously worked as a first-team fitness coach at Anfield, so working for the Merseysiders won’t be a new experience for him.

It’s understood that INEOS offloaded O’Boyle because his role “was no longer required” after the new leadership team was set up.

Meanwhile, United are back in action on Thursday when they face Scottish outfit Rangers in the Europa League.

Kick-off is at 20:00 GMT.
