Ex-United chief brutally axed by Ratcliffe lands new job just three months after leaving the club – report

Former Manchester United sporting director Dan Ashworth has reportedly landed a new role, away from football, with Warwickshire County Cricket Club.

Ashworth parted ways with United in December last year after just five months in the job.

He officially started work at Old Trafford on July 1, having spent five months on gardening leave at rival Premier League club Newcastle.

The 53-year-old’s exit came in the immediate aftermath of United’s 3-2 loss at the hands of Nottingham Forest.

United released a statement, relaying that the decision to end Ashworth’s involvement at the club was by “mutual agreement.”

However, it later emerged that the transfer guru didn’t see eye-to-eye with other members of the hierarchy, including co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

It’s understood the two differed over a number of issues, including Erik ten Hag’s sacking, potential replacements for the Dutch coach and the choice of players to recruit during the summer window.

It recently emerged that Ashworth’s five-month stint at United cost the club in excess of £4m, with that figure covering the compensation package paid to Newcastle and the pay-off he received following his axing.

Now, The Times report Ashworth is working as a freelance consultant with Warwickshire County Cricket Club.

It’s understood that Ashworth will advise “on a range of matters including high performance.” He has previously worked with Warwickshire, having joined their audit committee in 2021.

The cricket side are on the hunt for a new performance director but Ashworth is not believed to be a candidate for this position.

The Times claim that one of the reasons behind Ashworth not throwing his name into the hat is due to the relatively low salary the job commands, in comparison to the previous roles he’s held in football.

Meanwhile, United are back in action on Wednesday when they welcome Ipswich Town at the Theatre of Dreams.
