Ex-Chelsea captain John Terry reacts to Thomas Tuchel’s decision to snub Luke Shaw – report

Former Chelsea defender John Terry has admitted being left surprised by Thomas Tuchel’s decision to axe Luke Shaw from the England squad. Left out Tuchel announced his England squad on Friday morning ahead of home friendlies against Uruguay and Japan during the international break. The German coach recalled United duo Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo for the first time since he took the national team job. No United player has been involved with England in 18 months, since Mainoo and Maguire were last called up in September 2024. However, the impressive form of the two players under interim head coach Michael Carrick prompted Tuchel to recall them. But there was no place in the team for Shaw, who has also been a key player since Carrick’s arrival. Explaining his decisions, Tuchel said that stiff competition was behind Shaw’s omission. He also noted that he was keen to see how Mainoo and Maguire would get on in the camp. Terry took to TikTok and shared his reaction to the England squad announcement and the different fates of the United trio. Terry’s verdict The ex-Chelsea captain said, “I’m actually a little surprised that Luke Shaw’s not been in.” “He would be a mainstay in my England squad and be on the plane, definitely, on the way to the World Cup.” On Maguire, Terry remarked, “Great to see Harry Maguire back in the squad as well.” “I think he’s been fantastic, an integral part of Michael Carrick’s performances and the return of form for Man United in recent weeks.” He said about Mainoo, “Kobbie Mainoo adds to that as well. I think he’s been first class, so delighted for those two guys to get back in.” Shaw’s full focus will be on playing well between now and the end of the season and potentially forcing Tuchel into a rethink.
