“Everyone wants…“: Andy Cole insists under-fire United man will slowly but surely prove his worth next season

With the 2025-26 season fast approaching, Manchester United fans, including Andy Cole, are hopeful of a more promising campaign.

The 2024-25 season was intensely frustrating, with United finishing 15th in the league.

Their 0-1 Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur meant the club missed out on European football altogether.

Even after replacing manager Erik ten Hag with head coach Ruben Amorim last November following a poor start to the season, results failed to improve.

Now, fans expect INEOS not just to back Amorim with words but to fully support him by securing the players his system requires.

Pre-season and transfer hopes in the rebuild

Matheus Cunha, packaged as the ideal number 10 for Amorim’s preferred formation, has already signed.

Bryan Mbeumo, seen as the perfect attacking partner for Cunha, is also expected to complete his Old Trafford switch, provided United and Brentford can reach an agreement.

Beyond the two playmakers, a striker and potentially a goalkeeper are expected to be signed. With these reinforcements and a solid pre-season, there is hope that Amorim’s project will finally take off.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the release of the 2025-26 fixtures, former United striker Cole shared his hopes for Amorim heading into the new season.

The legendary forward backed the Portuguese tactician, stressing the importance of patience in allowing him to implement his project at Old Trafford.

“We all deserve time, you know,” Cole told Sky Sports.

“I think as managers, you know, when you go in as a manager, you know, you got to be given time.

“And I know everyone wants a fix—I mean, sorry, a quick fix—but sometimes in football, you know, things like that don’t happen.

“Everything’s a process. It takes time. Fingers crossed this season, you know, it works out a little bit better for him than last season.

“But we’ll have to wait and see. Everything, like I said, everything’s a process.”

Like Cole, most United fans hope things improve in the new season.

Tough start to the season

The league fixtures are out, and United face a challenging start. They open against Arsenal before big clashes against Manchester City and Chelsea within their first five games.

A strong start could prove Cole and other hopeful fans right, with United making strides towards reclaiming their place at the top.
