“Emboldened” Mason Greenwood being urged to take radical action against United – report

Mason Greenwood is reportedly being encouraged to consider suing Manchester United following Benjamin Mendy’s court win over unpaid wages with Manchester City.

Mendy pursued an employment tribunal claim against City last year, insisting the Premier League champions owed him over £11 million in unpaid wages. Mendy was suspended without pay in September 2021 after he was charged with multiple counts of sexual assault.

The French defender was acquitted of all charges and as a result, the tribunal ruled in his favour, directing City to pay the majority of his £11million in unpaid wages.

According to The Sun, Greenwood is being urged to consider suing United, buoyed by Mendy’s recent success in court.

Greenwood was charged with attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour but his charges were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service, who cited the withdrawal of material witnesses from the case.

The Carrington academy graduate was arrested in January 2022 and suspended by United. He did not play for the Red Devils even after his arrest despite charges being dropped.

The Sun reveals that Greenwood’s representatives “remain unhappy” with United’s decision to eventually axe him. Members of his entourage believe that the club’s move affected Greenwood’s earning ability and attractiveness to sponsors like Nike, who parted ways with him after he was taken into custody.

A source told the newspaper that United are braced for a legal battle with Greenwood should it come to that.

“This is something that has been on the cards ever since criminal charges against Mason were dropped. The club has noted the Mendy case and the potential implications it has for them.”

“But the two cases are fundamentally different. Mendy was suspended without pay by City, whilst Mason was suspended on full pay.”

The source added, “If he were to launch legal action it would be for a loss of potential earnings. He was one of the hottest prospects in Europe. His suspension destroyed it all in an instant.”

“He could also claim for damage to his mental health. The Mendy case has emboldened those around Greenwood. They feel he was unfairly treated. But the club sought legal advice at every single stage and is prepared should he go through with it.”

Greenwood is currently enjoying a fresh start in France with Marseille, having joined the Ligue 1 outfit in the summer after a season-long loan spell in Spain with Getafe.

So far this term, Greenwood has plundered eight goals and two assists in 11 top-flight matches.
