Ruben Amorim guided his side to a much needed victory in front of home support last weekend as Sunderland were swept aside by two goals to nil at Old Trafford.
The win helped ease the mounting pressure on Amorim’s shoulders after a turbulent start to the season has left more questions than answers over his suitability for the role long term.
A host of names have been linked with replacing the United head coach should INEOS pull the trigger in the coming weeks, including mangers of current Premier League clubs.
As relayed by MSN news, United legend Paul Scholes has had his say on who he believes Amorim’s successor should be if indeed his is to be relieved of his duties.
Newcastle boss the man for the job
Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, Scholes named Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe as the ideal man to take the reigns at Old Trafford after doing a fine job on Tyneside.
“Eddie Howe, Eddie Howe,” Scholes said when the discussion around Amorim’s role came up.
However, despite his backing for the Englishman, Scholes did add a stipulation to the potential of a deal citing Howe’s infamous assistant manager, Jason Tindall as a drawback. “I’m not sure about his mate (Tindall), but definitely him,” he added.
Tindall’s touchline antics have earned him online notoriety with Howe’s right hand man seemingly consistently craving the limelight and turning himself into a social media meme.
Given the spotlight hat comes with the main job at Old Trafford, Howe might have to think twice about bringing his number two with him, should he decide to rake the role in the future.
No change expected yet
Despite United’s rocky form, the weekend win against Sunderland looks to have given Amorim the green light to continue his work in Manchester but he will be well aware of the need for improvement.
United travel to Anfield after the international break which could be another make or break fixture for the Portuguese head coach.
A positive result from Merseyside could prove the catalyst for an upturn in form with a heavy defeat bound to lead to stronger calls for a change in leadership at the club.
INEOS are desperate to stick with their man but with Amorim living week-to-week as things stand the United hierarchy would be negligent not to be doing their due diligence on alternative options and Howe’s name will certainly be in the mix.
