Manchester United have suffered a knockout blow in their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck after the latest update on his situation. On the radar United are preparing for a busy summer transfer window, with Champions League qualification looking increasingly likely. The Red Devils are said to be prioritising midfield reinforcements but other areas of the pitch could also come into play, due to the need for a deeper squad next season. In a recent interview, Harry Maguire urged United to bring in first-team-ready players to give him and his teammates the best possible chance of mounting a title charge. The defensive department is an area that could be addressed, especially with the fitness concerns over Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt. The former Ajax duo have proven they can’t be relied upon to stay fit for the course of an entire season and United will need additions to offset their expected absences. Schlotterbeck emerged as a target for the Red Devils. His contract was set to expire in 2027 and talks over fresh terms appeared to have hit a dead end. A report covered by The Peoples Person claimed that Dortmund feared that Schlotterbeck’s head had been turned by the rumours of a potential move to either United or Liverpool. The 26-year-old addressed his future and was non-committal about whether or not he would put pen to paper on a new deal to stay at Dortmund. However, Dortmund have now announced that Schlotterbeck has signed a new long-term contract, ending all speculation over his future. Schlotterbeck update Dortmund posted a picture of Schlotterbeck amending his signature to the contract. The image was accompanied with the caption, “Nico Schlotterbeck extends his contract!” “BVB have reached an agreement with Nico Schlotterbeck on a contract extension, keeping him at the club until 2031.” Nico Schlotterbeck extends his contract! 💪 BVB have reached an agreement with Nico Schlotterbeck on a contract extension, keeping him at the club until 2031. ✍️ pic.twitter.com/TADMIi2oUY — Borussia Dortmund (@BlackYellow) April 10, 2026 NICO. It’s said that this release clause is only available to certain clubs, presumably European heavyweights. Schlotterbeck is set to draw an annual €10m salary. If United plan to bring in a central defender, it appears they will now have to look elsewhere.
