Defender Aoife Mannion has landed a new club after parting ways with Manchester United, following the expiry of her contract.
Mannion’s time at United
United confirmed Mannion’s exit last month and since then, she has been available as a free agent.
She joined the club in 2021 from cross-town rivals Manchester City, where she spent two years. Mannion was a crucial member of the United squad during her four-year stay at Leigh Sports Village.
The Republic of Ireland international helped United qualify for the Champions League on two occasions. United hadn’t managed this feat before her arrival.
She was also instrumental in the club’s run to three consecutive FA Cup finals, the most memorable one of which came in 2024, when Marc Skinner’s side defeated Tottenham Hotspur to secure their first major honour.
However, injuries and fitness issues prevented Mannion from truly nailing down a consistent run of games and performances under Skinner.
The 29-year-old made 55 appearances for United.
Mannion secures move to Newcastle
BBC journalist Emma Sanders has confirmed that WSL 2 outfit Newcastle are on the brink of finalising a deal for Mannion.
She’s not the only one they’re signing, as they’re also set to acquire the services of Jordan Nobbs and Ffion Morgan. All three will join the club on permanent deals.
Sanders notes about Newcastle’s move to sign Mannion, Nobbs and Morgan, “Newcastle are showing ambition in the transfer window as they push to gain promotion to the Women’s Super League.”
“They are also adding more staff members, including a new head of performance, with further investment in the women’s side of the club.”
Newcastle ended last term in fifth place in WSL 2, having been promoted from the third division.
