De Ligt: There’s more to come

Matthijs de Ligt believes there is “a lot more to come” from him in his second season at Manchester United.

The centre-back made 42 appearances in his debut season at the club, having joined from Bayern Munich in August 2024.

Particularly strong form in March and April earned respect from fans, before Matthijs suffered an unfortunate injury, which disrupted his end to the season.

Speaking with United Review while on tour in the USA, De Ligt outlined his intention to show more in a red shirt in 2025/26.

“I feel there’s still a lot more to come,” he said.

“Sometimes me and other football fans forget I’m still 25, and as a centre-back you’re normally in your prime at 28 or 29, so in that way, I’m still quite young.”

That Matthijs captained his boyhood club, Ajax, aged 18, in elite European competition, and has since enjoyed spells with Juventus and Bayern Munich makes it hard to remember how young he is.

“I’ve been to a lot of places!” he reflected in the matchday programme v Fiorentina.

“So, sometimes I don’t feel that way [young] but there’s a lot more to come. Hopefully we can build something together at United to show the world what we’re capable of.

“Personally, I’d love to carry on from how I was in March, April – I feel that is the level I could show and should show on a consistent basis. That’s my personal goal, and also to stay fit, that is really important. And then the goal with the team is to really show everybody what it is to play for United, and to get a positive vibe again around the team and the club.

“We want to show the fans what United is and that we want to win every game. It’s a nice feeling to start over again, because it gives you a clean slate, and hopefully from the start we can really get these positive vibes back.”
