David De Gea has expressed his thanks to Manchester United fans after he made an emotional return to Old Trafford with Fiorentina on Saturday.
The Reds’ legendary former shot-stopper was back in town for the first time since departing the club in the summer of 2023.
De Gea signed for Fiorentina 12 months later and the Italian side provided the opposition for United’s final pre-season outing of the summer, in the Snapdragon Cup meeting in M16.
Ahead of the clash, United’s former no.1 was presented with a commemorative award by his friend and ex-team-mate Bruno Fernandes, recognising his exemplary service to the club for a 12-year period.

There was another special moment for the Spaniard late in the contest, when he was replaced by Tomasso Martinelli three minutes from full-time, and given a standing ovation by supporters in all corners of the stadium.
“A magical moment for me and my family to come back to Old Trafford – my home,” De Gea wrote on X, on Saturday afternoon.
“From the bottom of my heart – I want to say thank you for the reception – for all the love you shown me today.”
