Rio Ferdinand has revealed that Jonny Evans is part of a group of former Manchester United players and legends, who regularly “hammer” the current crop of stars.
United are enduring an extremely challenging season both on and off the pitch.
The Red Devils currently lie in 12th position in the Premier League table, with just 29 points gained from a possible 69.
United have won a mere eight games all campaign, drawn five and lost 10. Erik ten Hag was sacked in late November and replaced by Ruben Amorim, who is still struggling to implement his preferred 3-4-3 formation.
A top-four finish looks well out of reach for Amorim and his players although they have recently picked up some form in the Europa League and are still in the FA Cup.
All the players that have lined up for the club after Sir Alex Ferguson’s have had to bear the burden of comparisons with the Scot’s legendary teams and it won’t help that the current stars are being “hammered” on WhatsApp amidst their turbulent campaign.
Speaking on his Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast with guest Ella Toone, Ferdinand revealed that there is a WhatsApp group of ex-players who regularly slam Amorim’s side during games.
The group, called Band of Brothers, consists of individuals like Wayne Rooney, Nani, Anderson, Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck.
Ferdinand told Toone, “It’s just hammering the United team. Look, lads are just hammering them through the game.”
“Wazza, I think, was the last person who spoke in there. It’s called Band of Brothers. It’s the 2008-2010 team. You’ve got the younger lads like Tom Cleverley, Danny Welbeck, and there’s Nani and Anderson.”
“You know who’s joined recently? Edwin van der Sar. I think he’s going to delete himself soon because the chat ain’t for him.”
Ferdinand added, “Who else is in there? Jonny Evans is in there who’s currently playing. Some of the stuff that goes on: Patrice Evra gets mullered, hammered all the time. We hammer each other.”
“Because you know, lads, sometimes you don’t speak. We’ve been on an amazing journey together and then you all part ways and go separately. We’ve got all this technology now, you’ve got to use it.”
United are back in action on Thursday when they face Romanian outfit FCSB in the Europa League.
