Chido Obi scores yet again but midfield star outshone him in massive u21s victory

Manchester United u21s topped their group in the National League Cup after a 0-5 routing of Oldham Athletic.

Here are our player ratings for the match. Read the detailed match report of all the action here.

(A score of 6 is around average)

Elyh Harrison – 8 – Top performance in goal from Harrison who looks more assured after his loan spell with Chester. Was quick off his line to cut out attacks in behind and made one great save. More impressively though was his distribution from the back, he looked like a midfielder and should have had an assist with a stellar ball over the top to Sharpe.

Habeeb Ogunneye – 7 – Was decent defensively and made a couple of good recovery challenges in dangerous areas but could have done better in attack, particularly his deliveries into the box.

Tyler Fredricson – 7.5 – Almost scored an own goal in the first minute but ended up the best of the back four, he was strong in the air and defended well 1v1 with a couple of strong challenges.

Godwill Kukonki – 5.5 – A shaky performance started with a few poor passes straight out of play and to the opposition. Then was too weak in the tackle which allowed a big chance before misjudging the flight of a long ball to let Sam Taylor through 1v1. Looked more composed in the second half when he was coming up against a fellow u18s player but still struggled when Taylor made runs in behind him.

Sam Murray – 7 – Was rarely troubled defensively and was composed on the ball, got himself an assist with a nice corner delivery for Musa to head home at the end of the match.

Finley McAllister – 6.5 – Moved the ball quickly, particularly did well spreading the play out to Mather on the left wing within one touch to allow Mather to attack the box.

Sekou Kone – 8 – Perhaps Kone’s best performance in a United shirt yet. He looked fitter and was able to skip past challenges in midfield to open the space. Most impressively was how he played with an attitude to always move forward. Whether it was by dribbling or looking for the killer pass, he was looking to make things happen throughout the 90 minutes and did so with a great run before Obi’s goal.

Malachi Sharpe – 7.5 – Dangerous throughout the match with his running in behind and desire to take on his fullback. Left a lot to be desired in the first half with his final product but kept his head up and got his goal in the second half with a good finish.

Jack Moorhouse – 8.5 – Arguably the man of the match, his ability to turn and drive in midfield wreaked havoc on Oldham. He opened the scoring with some sensational footwork that left his marker stumbling to the ground as he struck the back of the net. He then played a key part in the second goal before driving forward to set up Mather for the fourth.

Sam Mather – 7 – Slowed the attack down too much in the first half by taking too many touches before playing the pass but was a bit more sharp in the second half to get an assist and take his goal really with a powerful strike into the roof of the net.

Chido Obi – 8.5 – A well-rounded performance that showed he could be a complete striker. Dropped deep at times to pick the ball up and turn his defender before driving into space.

Substitutes

Ruben Curley – 7 – Added more drive and attacking impetus upon his introduction. Came close with a long range effort on goal but had to settle for just an assist after a lovely curled pass to set free Sharpe.

James Scanlon – 6 – Played a nice pass to feed through Obi shortly after his introduction.

Victor Musa – 6.5 – Not on for long but got his name on the scoresheet with a well taken header from a corner.
