Change in Chido Obi’s situation leads to major decision about where he’ll play next season – Athletic

Manchester United’s search for a proven number nine this summer is proving difficult with INEOS struggling to get deals done for players either incoming to, or outgoing from Old Trafford.

With a raft of reported targets opting to go elsewhere, United’s shortlist has dwindled to the point they might find themselves no stronger in the central striker position going into the new campaign.

Ruben Amorim has made no secret of United’s need for additional firepower but could be left having to get more out of his current misfiring crop should INOES fail to deliver in the coming weeks.

Could a youngster be the ace in the pack?

Despite their turbulent spell since taking minority control at United, INOES have bolstered the quality in the youth ranks over the last 18 months, with the change in transfer strategy clear to see.

As reported by The Athletic, one youngster who will be expecting more opportunities this season is Danish striker Chido Obi who has been granted a new shirt number for the new term.

The outlet reports that he is “expected to be a regular name in Amorim’s squads”.

Having swapped 56 for 32, the now 17-year-old is hoping to make his mark in the first team at Old Trafford and could prove to be a handy option for Amorim despite his tender years.

Obi signed from Arsenal last October after scoring a lorry load of goals at youth levels, Chido Obi continued that trend last season, impressing for United’s under 18’s.

So much so, the striker was given several opportunities in the first team toward the back end of the campaign and caught the eye with some decent moments in Amorim’s set up.

Chido Obi also turned in an impressive display in United’s post season Tour in Hong Kong, notching a couple of goals to save his side from further embarrassment at the end of their disastrous campaign.

Summer bulk up could hold the key

As well as his change in squad number, staff at Carrington have reportedly noticed a tone up to his impressive 6ft 2in frame over the summer which is needed to help him survive, and thrive in the Premier League.

There was talk about sending the striker out on loan this season but his bulk up has led to United deciding he could be ready to make an impact at the top level without cutting his teeth elsewhere.

If the Dane grows into his body as expected, his profile looks tailor made for England’s top flight and coupled with his natural ability to find the back of the net, Amorim will be hoping he can develop into the perfect striker.

However, despite his willingness to give youth a chance, Amorim will know he has to be careful with Obi given the responsibility of playing under the stressful lights of the Theatre of Dreams.

Yet, as has been United’s mantra throughout their history, ‘if you’re good enough, you’re old enough’. If the young starlet is managed in the right way this season, he might find the big stage just to his liking.
