Carrick looking for dream start in blockbuster match by avoiding 100-year unwanted record

Manchester United welcome local rivals Manchester City to Old Trafford in what promises to be a blockbuster match. There have been 197 matches between the two sides in history, with United being victorious in 80. The blue side of Manchester have won 63 and there have been 54 draws between the two teams. Michael Carrick was appointed interim manager until the end of the season and could not have been given a more difficult start. United need to play the top two teams in the league in the space of a week when they play City and Arsenal at the Emirates to end the month. United have certainly had their moments over the years but have actually generally performed better at the Etihad. The BBC report that, “Manchester United have failed to score in four of their last five Premier League home games against Manchester City, including the last two in a row.” What’s more, “they’ve not gone three plus home league games without a goal against the Citizens since a run of four between December 1911 and September 1914.” Draws galore The two Manchester teams have become something of draw specialists of late in the league. United have disappointingly only picked up three points from three matches against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Leeds United and Burnley. City have also drawn their last three matches in the Premier League. They drew 0-0 with Sunderland before home ties with Chelsea and Brighton & Hove Albion. In fact, the Red Devils “have drawn each of their last three Premier League games, last having a longer run of consecutive draws in September/October 1992” when the scores were level in five consecutive games. In addition, “Manchester City have drawn each of their last three Premier League games, last having a longer run of consecutive draws in October/November 2009,” when they amazingly drew seven straight games.
