Bruno honoured at Portuguese awards

Bruno Fernandes’s excellent month continued on Monday as he was recognised at the 2024 Quinas de Ouro gala in Portugal.

The ceremony, held at the Centro Cultural de Belem, in Lisbon, saw a number of players and coaches from the men’s and women’s game, plus the worlds of beach football and futsal, commended by the Portuguese Football Federation.

Fernandes received an award alongside Selecao team-mate and Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva, with whom he made his debut for Portugal’s Under-19 side, back in 2012.

“It’s my first memory for the national team,” Bruno said. “It was a special milestone for me and it was great to share that moment with Bernardo.

“Being in the national team means being among the best, whatever the sport or age group. There is nothing more rewarding than being able to represent your country.”

Cristiano Ronaldo, Pepe and Ruben Dias were among those also presented with prizes.

The purpose of this year’s Quinas de Ouro awards was to reward those who have shown ‘the excellence of being Portuguese’, and our new head coach Ruben Amorim was also honoured, on the day he officially began work at United.

Amorim sent a message which was broadcast at the ceremony in his absence, saying: “I would like to thank you for the distinction, I am very honoured. I will miss Portuguese football a lot.”

Jorge Jesus, the manager who won 12 trophies during spells with Benfica and Sporting, added: “What I wish is for him to be as lucky [at United] as he was at Sporting. I’ve already had the opportunity to express my ideas to him.

“He was the player who worked with me the longest and I wish him the best of luck in the world.”

Bruno and Diogo Dalot flew out to Lisbon the day after our clash with Leicester City, in which Fernandes made his 250th United appearance and scored our opening goal in a 3-0 win.

En route, a passenger reportedly fell ill, with Bruno coming to his aid and ensuring all was OK.

The Portuguese pair are now preparing for UEFA Nations League matches against Poland and Croatia, ahead of Amorim’s first match in charge of United, at Ipswich on Sunday 24 November.
