Manchester United have picked their interim manager for the rest of the season. Last Monday, U18 coach Darren Fletcher stepped in after United decided to pull the trigger on Ruben Amorim, who endured a nightmare 14-month spell in Manchester. Fletcher led United against Burnley in the Premier League and Brighton in the FA Cup. However, the highly-rated coach couldn’t register a win as the Red Devils exited the FA Cup at the third-round stage. United have been searching for a more experienced caretaker boss since last week. It has been widely reported that United have held meetings with both Solskjaer and Michael Carrick to take over the helm. Now, it seems the club’s hierarchy have made their final decision. According to CentreDevils, Carrick is set to be named as United’s caretaker manager for the remainder of the season, beating Solskjaer to the race. The former midfielder was United’s assistant manager under Jose Mourinho and Solskjaer and even took charge of the Mancunians for three games from late November to early December 2021 following Solskjaer’s sacking. The report states: “There will be further talks today to finalise details with Carrick, who has already met with Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox today.” United want to announce their decision imminently, as they look to put a new man in place before the first team’s training session on Wednesday ahead of the Manchester derby on the weekend. It is claimed Wilcox, who is United’s director of football, originally opted for Solskjaer. However, the Premier League giants are set to welcome back Carrick to Carrington. According to a report in the Mirror, some players went to club bosses and told them they didn’t want Solskjaer to return. It is added the players “made it clear they had little confidence in Solskjaer, and wanted Carrick to lead them for the remainder of the season.” Carrick, who last managed Middlesbrough in the Championship, is expected be officially announced as United’s caretaker manager in the next 24 hours.
