“Never in a million years”: Former United man claims one club was off limits for Rashford in January loan saga

Manchester United would “never in a million years” have let Marcus Rashford join Arsenal on loan in January, according to former United goalkeeper Ben Foster.

Speaking on his podcast, Foster declared that the club “happily” sent the 27-year-old to Aston Villa who represent the “next rung down.”

Certainly there is less historic rivalry between the Red Devils and the Villans, who are not one of the so-called ‘big six’ English sides, but it is an uncomfortable truth that Rashford’s only tastes of Champions League football this season will come under Unai Emery.

The player’s last minutes in United red came in the early December defeat to Nottingham Forest, with Ruben Amorim consistently overlooking him thereafter before sanctioning a loan departure in the winter transfer window.

There was tremendous speculation as to where the forward would end up, and Arsenal were among the names mentioned.

But for Foster, even the suggestion that the Carrington graduate could have ended up at the Emirates is laughable. He said: “Man United would never loan him to Arsenal, never in a million years.

“Even if Marcus Rashford kicks off massively, Manchester United would never, ever, ever send him to Arsenal, never in a million years.

“[They would] happily send him to Villa, it’s that next rung down, they won’t be sending him to Arsenal, I guarantee you that.”

As for the player himself, it seems that he sees Villa Park as a temporary home rather than the loan paving the way for a permanent move, as he stressed that “obviously it’s only short term that I’m here” in an interview with the club upon arrival.

It is widely believed that Rashford has his heart set on a switch to Barcelona, who are thought to have him on their shortlist for summer reinforcements but nothing concrete has materialised.

Meanwhile links to Arsenal are unlikely to disappear as injuries have laid bare Mikel Arteta’s lack of depth in attacking areas.

Rashford has made a solid start to life at Villa, featuring in four Premier League matches for Unai Emery and returning two assists – one more than he managed for United in 15 matches.

Joe has spent more than half his life writing about football and all of it following United. As a child he told a doctor his name was ‘Paul Scholes’, but could never pick a pass like him no matter how much he tried.

Fabrizio Romano: Europe’s most-wanted marksman tells United he’s ready to join Amorim’s revolution

Victor Osimhen is “open” to Manchester United’s proposal over a blockbuster summer transfer, Fabrizio Romano reveals, but wages remain a “key point” in any potential deal.

Osimhen, 26, is currently on loan at Galatasaray after falling out with Napoli manager Antonio Conte at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium last year.

As a result, the Nigerian striker came close to leaving Naples in the summer with Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain, as well as clubs in the Saudi Pro League, expressing interest in the move.

However, a combination of Osimhen’s £100 million release clause with Napoli and the 26-year-old’s exorbitant wage demands prevented a deal from being completed.

And, as the summer transfer deadline closed for Europe’s major leagues, Galatasaray were presented with a unique opportunity to sign a world-class striker on loan, given Turkey’s window remains open a week later than the rest of the continent.

It’s proven a brilliant deal as Osimhen has helped fire the Istanbul side to the top of the Super Lig table with 14 goals and 4 assists in just 19 league games.

United’s current forward line, comprising Rasmus Hojlund, Joshua Zirkzee, Amad, Mason Mount, and Alejandro Garnacho, has combined for the same number as a comparison.

But the Nigerian international will look to leave the Turkish capital when his loan ends as seeks a permanent transfer at one of Europe’s elite or, perhaps, a lucrative switch to Saudi Arabia.

The Red Devils are desperate to add a proven number nine to Ruben Amorim’s squad with Osimhen being one of the only reliable goal-scorers on the market this summer.

The 26-year-old’s release clause in Naples also drops to somewhere in the region of £65 million at the end of the season, further strengthening United’s resolve to complete a swoop.

However, Osimhen’s wage demands prevented a move away from Italy last summer and the striker will not compromise on this in the coming window.

Romano reveals, “for Osimhen, respecting his current salary conditions at Napoli is a key point” when considering any offers.

The Italian transfer guru describes the 26-year-old as “open to hearing from Man United” but is equally willing to negotiate with “more clubs” as well.

Similarly, Romano contends a deal for Osimhen is “not something being decided now in February” at Old Trafford as it will “depend on the budget” this summer, which is subject to change based on outgoing transfers and the manner in which the club finishes the season.

Treble-winning defender David May is part of our MUTV punditry team for Manchester United v Ipswich and he’s been playing our popular United Predictions game ahead of an Old Trafford night under the lights.

United return to M16 after two games on the road, hoping for a first Premier League victory since January, against Ipswich Town.

The 19:30 GMT kick-off gives the Reds an opportunity to turn our form around after we had to come from behind at Goodison Park on Saturday to earn a point against Everton. Captain Bruno Fernandes netted an excellent free-kick before Manuel Ugarte scored his first goal for the club with a fine drive.

Will Amorim stick with the side that began on Merseyside, or might there be an opportunity for one of the many youngsters included in recent weeks due to first-team injuries?

Well, our pundits have given us their insights to help you in making your own predictions. So, read their thoughts and then join us to predict Ruben’s starting XI, the scoreline, first goalscorer and your Man of the Match, and you’ll have the chance to win some great prizes.

David May is expecting a comfortable United win at Old Trafford. Check out his full predictions below…

DAVID MAY’S PREDICTIONS

United XI: Onana; De Ligt, Maguire, Yoro; Dalot, Ugarte, Fernandes, Mazraoui; Zirkzee, Hojlund, Garnacho.

Score: United 3-1 Leicester

First scorer: Alejandro Garnacho

Man of the Match: Bruno Fernandes

Treble-winning defender May is expecting a couple of changes from Saturday’s team. He thinks Alejandro Garnacho, who came off the bench to help United level the score, will come into the side and net our first goal of the evening.

May also predicts Amorim to make a slight alteration in the defence, bringing in Leny Yoro – who was also a sub at Goodison – for Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu, and shifting Noussair Mazraoui into the wing-back role.

After Bruno’s goalscoring display at Everton, May backs him to be our outstanding player at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

WHAT RUBEN’S SAID

Keen for more insight before making your choices? Well, here’s the key lines from the boss to help you.

On team news: “It’s the same [squad, as against Everton]. They [the absent players] are improving but nobody is recovering for this game. The good news this week [is] we didn’t lose anyone.”

On Bruno Fernandes: “He’s a blessing. He’s a very good player, he works really well, he’s always available, so he’s the kind of player that this club needs.”

On Manuel Ugarte scoring his first goal: “It was a very good goal, a difficult goal, a quality goal. So he needs to do it again and again. Of course we need it. That is clear. We need goals, but more as a team. We need to have more threat and we have to believe it when we are near the goal.”

AMORIM’S INTERVIEW | The boss has his say on Bruno Fernandes, Patrick Dorgu and Kieran McKenna before Ipswich (H)…

On January signing Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu: “I think the one important thing is that he’s really excited to be here and you can feel it every day. So it’s something that I’m really happy with, because he understood how lucky he is to play for a club like ours. He’s playing really well in the context that it is really hard, but he’s showing a lot of things that we thought when we bring a player like him in – a young player. He has the pace, he has the quality, he can play both sides, but he’s playing on the left. I think he’s feeling a little bit more free. He’s going to be a very good player for us now and in the future.”

So, does that indicate a starting spot for anyone in particular? You decide!

WHAT OUR WRITERS THINK

Joe Ganley predicts… Garnacho to return (and score?)

“United were a team transformed for much of the second half at Goodison Park on Saturday, and there were a few reasons for that: better control in possession and the confidence injected by Bruno Fernandes’s free-kick among them. But Alejandro Garnacho’s introduction in the 62nd minute was undoubtedly one factor. The ebullient 20-year-old is unlike any other player at United’s disposal and he helped draw the Toffees’ defence and midfield out of shape, creating space for Ruben’s Reds elsewhere on the pitch. That’s why I’m backing him to return to the starting XI against Ipswich. What else? Well, how about a first Garna goal since late November? He’s come close many times since that early tap-in against Bodo/Glimt; it feels like only a matter of time…”

How many changes will Ruben Amorim make to face Ipswich?

How many changes will Ruben Amorim make to face Ipswich?

Harry Robinson thinks… Bruno will score

“It could be a tight game tonight. United have struggled to find first-half goals and with the packed schedule and continued absence of some key players, that may continue. Ipswich have held teams well on several occasions. I’m expecting an Old Trafford night which builds towards a crescendo and that release of tension that comes from a goal when you’ve been knocking at the door all game. The scorer? Bruno Fernandes. He got a captain’s goal at Goodison and is made for nights like this. United fans need to get behind the team and help us find that sense of freedom that unleashes our creativity. If we as fans can do that, I’m predicting a tense but ultimately fruitful evening with a 2-0 win.”

“He fits in well”: Midfield stalwart full of praise for “athletic” United star who has impressed one and all

Manchester United are a much better team with Patrick Dorgu in it as compared to how the team looked before the Dane arrived at the club.

Ruben Amorim was being forced to play Diogo Dalot on the left and Noussair Mazraoui on the right and with both being traditional full-backs, they struggled to adjust to the demands of playing as wingbacks.

In the Portuguese’s system, a wingback is expected to hold the width and provide the attacking impetus down the flanks as there is no place for an out-and-out winger with the coach preferring attacking midfielders up front.

Both Dalot and Mazraoui are not exactly known for their attacking prowess, which is why the Red Devils splashed an initial £25 million to land the Dane.

Dorgu impressing everyone

And despite most of his teammates crumbling under pressure at the moment, the 20-year-old has been a breath of fresh air, bombing forward at will and using his pace and physicality to great effect.

His compatriot Christian Eriksen was asked about Dorgu’s qualities and what he brings to the table and the 33-year-old told club media that the former Lecce star’s biggest asset is his pace and his ability to go up and down the flank.

“I think you’ve seen already what he can bring. He’s an athletic full-back and a good player on the ball that likes to go forward. And yeah, he’s a very nice guy. There’s not many Danish guys who aren’t nice guys!

“I think he fits in well. He has to get used to everything in the Prem and at this club, but he’s in good hands and I think he’ll do really well.”

Amorim has already been impressed with what he has seen and so have the fans. A lot of new players often take time to adapt to their new surroundings, but not the Denmark international.

Adapted pretty quickly

In fact, his Goodison Park display highlighted how he does not let the hostile atmosphere faze him one bit and he was one of few who emerged from last Saturday’s clash with his reputation enhanced.

Eriksen was also proud of Dorgu because of his nationality. He became the eighth player from Denmark to represent the 20-time English league champions.

“I think there’s always been that [interest], more or less. For a few years you had a good [Peter] Schmeichel here at the club, so I think the connection with Danish people has always been close.

“But at the moment, of course, we’re three or four from Denmark and it’s a lot compared to what there has been before. At the same time, it means that Danish guys are good players and they can play at a big club and then yeah, just really to show the country [off].”

Liverpool ‘willing to pay’ £62m for ex-Man Utd striker Mason Greenwood in shock transfer

Liverpool are one of four clubs hoping to sign former Man Utd striker Mason Greenwood in the summer transfer window, according to reports.

Greenwood spent last season on loan at Spanish side Getafe and signed a five-year contract with Marseille in the summer after Man Utd agreed to sell him for £26.6m.

He has started very well in France with Marseille second in the Ligue 1 table and the former Man Utd striker contributing 14 goals and three assists in 22 matches.

The 23-year-old was suspended by the Red Devils on January 30, 2022 over allegations relating to a young woman after images and videos were posted online.

He faced charges including attempted rape and assault, but the Crown Prosecution Service announced in February 2023 that the case had been discontinued.

Man Utd co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe had said in February last year that the club would take a decision on Greenwood’s future in the summer, and “justify it one way or the other”.

A short statement from the Red Devils confirmed the transfer to Marseille, which delivered on the club’s prior commitment that the one-cap England international would continue his career away from Old Trafford.

And his form for Marseille has not gone unnoticed back here in the Premier League with Spanish website Fichajes insisting that Liverpool are one of four clubs ‘competing’ to sign the former Man Utd player.

Greenwood is said to be ‘back on the agenda of the biggest clubs on the planet’ with Barcelona continuing ‘to keep an eye on’ the Englishman.

Revealing interest from Liverpool, the report adds:

‘However, Barcelona are not the only ones interested in Greenwood. His talent and potential have sparked the interest of clubs such as Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Juventus, three teams with great financial muscle that could beat any offer from the Catalan side.

‘Olympique de Marseille, aware of the player’s value, have valued his sale at approximately 75 million euros, a figure that represents a great challenge for the Blaugrana coffers.’

The report continues:

‘Despite the financial difficulties, Barcelona are still exploring options to strengthen their squad and believe that Greenwood could be a key addition for the future.

‘However, competition with clubs that can easily afford the transfer fee could seriously complicate any attempt by the Catalan club to secure his services. Everything will depend on the evolution of the market and Barcelona’s ability to generate resources that allow it to compete on equal terms for the signing of the young English attacker.’

Rashford and Antony recall clauses ‘clarified’ as Mo Salah suffers stunning snub

We’re starting to wonder just how deep into the remaining months of the season certain outlets will still be wringing clicks out of stories saying Man United obviously can’t recall Antony or Marcus Rashford from their loan deals under headlines that nudge, nudge, winkily suggest they could.

Total Recall
This…

Inside the Goodison tunnel bust-up as furious Man United stars clashed with Everton players and James Tarkowski’s foul-mouthed jibe at Harry Maguire, plus the latest on Marcus Rashford and Antony’s recall clauses: MAN UNITED CONFIDENTIAL

…is a very, very MailOnline headline way of saying Marcus Rashford and Antony do not have recall clauses in their current loan deals. The ‘latest’ on those recall clauses is still very much the same as all previous updates over the last three weeks in as much as said recall clauses do not exist, never did exist, never could have existed, and even if they did exist would still be impossible to deploy in any meaningful way.

We’ve done this already, guys. Of course they don’t have recall clauses in short-term January loan deals. It would be bizarre if they did; if United had been interested in recalling them, then they wouldn’t have been loaning them.

But apparently there is still a good deal of mileage in writing yet more stories confirming the obvious and known fact that Antony and Rashford don’t have recall clauses and then putting them under headlines that accidentally suggest that maybe they do in fact have recall clauses.

We look forward to doing this all again next week, or perhaps even tomorrow if United manage to make a mess of things against Ipswich.

Recall it a comeback
And, of course, this ‘new report from the Daily Mail’ gives free rein to every Tom, Dick and Reach Outlet to do the same but with even less effort.

Marcus Rashford and Antony’s loan deals clarified as Man Utd recall option mooted

We’ll moot you, Daily Mirror.

Winter is coming
We’re sticking with Rashford, we’re afraid, because it remains abundantly clear that writing any old sh*t about Marcus Rashford is still very much click central.

And the Express really have written any old sh*t about Marcus Rashford here…

Marcus Rashford has made his feelings towards Man Utd clear after Ruben Amorim treatment

Now, obviously we know and you know that this is not a story that is going to contain any viable content whatsoever. We all know it’s a trick of some kind, it’s just the specifics we need to discover. We all know, for instance, that the one thing Rashford one million per cent will not have done in making clear those feelings is have a pop at United despite the obvious and deliberate tone of that clicky little headline.

At best, you’re clicking on this thinking he’s probably liked an Instagram post from Rasmus Hojlund or some such tishery and fipsy.

At worst, it’s this. We are almost impressed at the sheer brass balls and the fact it made us double and triple-check the publication date to make absolutely sure it was published today.

But despite exiting on far from buoyant terms, having endured a prolonged exile by the order of Ruben Amorim, Rashford has made it clear that there is no ill feeling towards his boyhood club.

Has he now. Go on, then.

In an interview with Henry Winter ahead of his departure…

Wait, no, surely not even the Daily Express – a title that shed the very last vestiges of its dignity sometime in the last century – is going to serve up the quotes from the now infamous Henry Winter interview from last year that kickstarted the whole Rashford Exit Plan and pretend they constitute news over two months later?

…the England international said: “For me, personally, I think I’m ready for a new challenge and the next steps.

They are, you know. They really, really are.

“When I leave, it’s going to be ‘no hard feelings’. You’re not going to have any negative comments from me about Manchester United. That’s me as a person.”

We have no words. No printable words anyway.

Mo problems
There were four Premier League games on Tuesday night, and five more on Wednesday night including Liverpool v Newcastle, Tottenham v Man City and Nottingham Forest v Arsenal.

That is a lot of Actual Football.

So what is the top story on the MailOnline football homepage on Wednesday morning?

RIO’S SALAH SNUB

There is not a sigh deep enough for this sh*t. But on we go.

Rio Ferdinand shuts down talk of Mo Salah being the Premier League’s best ever player – and insists there’s ‘NO CHANCE’ he’s ahead of two legends

Oh good, it’s an entirely subjective GOAT debate that has no objective metrics and comes down entirely to personal opinion and has no right answer and any answer anyone does give amounts to a snub of literally every other Premier League player ever if you want to be a prick about it. Marvellous. Do crack on.

But Ferdinand has ‘rubbished talk of Liverpool’s in-form superstar Mohamed Salah being the Premier League’s greatest ever player’ so he must have really put the boot in to him.

He definitely can’t have just said there’s a couple of other players from the 33 years of Premier League football he thinks are even better. It definitely can’t be that. Can it?

Explaining his view on Salah, Ferdinand continued: ‘Stats-wise and consistency-wise he is in the conversation, in the top three definitely, but in terms of someone who excites me, the maverick, that’s what elevates them for me to be the best.

If calling someone ‘definitely’ the third best footballer the Premier League has ever seen behind Thierry Henry and Cristiano Ronaldo is a snub we are all in trouble.

Money, money, money
Now one of Mediawatch’s pet peeves is the glib way absurd sums of money are trivialised in your modern football, so you will have to forgive us the hypocrisy of what we’re about to do to the Mirror here.

Arsenal splashed out an eye-watering £1.2m on their sunshine trip to Dubai.

Is… is that really eye-watering? For a club and business the size of Arsenal? It isn’t, is it? We can just about accept these sorts of stories at Manchester United where they can be painted against a backdrop of Sir Scrooge McRatcliffe sacking the little people and reducing the canteen menu to very small bowls of gruel.

But not anywhere else, surely. It just isn’t, in elite 21st century football terms, that significant a sum of money. It is a star player’s monthly wage.

And here’s where it falls down. Because at Arsenal the backdrop isn’t regular people getting shafted, it’s this.

That figure might not go down well with some fans who were fuming that the club did not spend a penny in the January transfer window when they were crying out for a striker.

And that doesn’t work at all, does it? If only, instead of gadding about decadently in Dubai, Arsenal had simply bought themselves a £1.2m striker who could fire them to the league title because it is apparently 1988.

The real reason this story exists, of course, is because that Dubai trip is now widely accepted to have been a disaster because Kai Havertz got injured during one of the training sessions. But you know where else he could have got injured during a training session? North London.

The worst part of this story, though, is that John Cross – an Arsenal-focused football journalist of long standing who knows his patch – is painfully aware that he’s writing absolute bollocks. And having written enough pars of that absolute bollocks to appease the algorithmic overlords sets about spending the rest of the piece explaining precisely why and how it is bollocks.

Arsenal put a great deal of emphasis on last season’s trip to Dubai being a huge success in terms of a bonding exercise while it also allowed them to put a bad spell of form behind them and they enjoyed a winning run after they returned home which breathed new life into their season.

On the back of last year, the club emphasised that this season’s trip was factored into the budget and the players, staff and everyone involved enjoyed it and saw it as a major benefit and a valuable bonding exercise.

Seems like that might not be an insane eye-watering use of a million quid, then, for a massive Premier League football club.

But did this disastrous Havertz-knacking trip even in fact cost Arsenal £1.2m at all? When that supposedly eye-watering sum is supposedly the cornerstone of the entire story?

Arsenal do have strong commercial and partner tie-ups in Dubai so sponsorship deals would have helped offset the financial outlay and also strengthen future relationships.

That’s a no, then.

Sensational wonderkid ready to move to United even without European football, Amorim will be delighted – report

Manchester United’s new head coach Ruben Amorim employs the use of wingbacks instead of traditional fullbacks with the wingbacks tasked with providing attacking impetus down the flanks.

Due to Luke Shaw’s injury problems and Tyrell Malacia’s form issues, the Portuguese tactician was forced to play Diogo Dalot on the left and Noussair Mazraoui on the right and as expected, both struggled offensively.

Which is why the first bit of business conducted in January involved signing Patrick Dorgu from Lecce, who has instantly transformed the left flank.

And Amorim is now hoping for the same on the opposite flank with Dalot playing there for now. Geovany Quenda of Sporting CP has been earmarked as the perfect recruit.

Quenda, the perfect wingback target

He knows exactly what the head coach wants and can play up front and on either flank if required, with his attacking prowess impressing one and all.

The 17-year-old has been a revelation since Amorim handed him his Sporting debut and now he is eager to reunite with the Portuguese wonderkid.

He has two goals and seven assists already this term and there have been murmurs that the Red Devils are trying to agree a pre-contract agreement with Sporting for the teenager.

However given United’s current form, the likelihood of European football at Old Trafford next season looks very slim which is why there are concerns about whether Viktor Gyokeres or Victor Osimhen will agree to move to Manchester in the summer.

But as Givemesport have now claimed, Quenda has no such qualms and is ready to move even if there is no European football on offer.

Interestingly, the report also claims that the Red Devils will not need to sanction major departures before agreeing a move for the wingback, which basically means he is not going to cost much.

Ready to move even without CL football

“Manchester United are looking to push through a pre-summer agreement for Quenda, according to GMS sources, and they have been given a significant boost in their pursuit as he is open to completing the move regardless of whether his admirers succeed in their attempts to secure a European qualification berth in the final months of the season.

“GMS sources have been informed that Manchester United are confident they will be able to recruit Quenda without having to sanction big-name departures first, which will not be the case when it comes to other targets due to needing to ease the strain on the wage bill, leading to Amorim making his arrival an early priority to get the ball rolling ahead of the summer.”

The wing-back, who has a contract until 2027, has a release clause of just over £80 million, an amount Sporting are unlikely to earn.

He has already reportedly agreed personal terms with the 20-time English league champions and Sporting are asking for around £50 million, although United are looking to complete the deal for around £40 million.

United will destroy Ipswich Town if Ruben Amorim can make these two simple adjustments

Manchester United will be looking to secure three points when they host Premier League strugglers Ipswich Town at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

On Saturday, Ruben Amorim’s men staged a dramatic comeback away at Everton after going two goals down to secure a late 2-2 draw.

While Everton have been in fine form since David Moyes returned to the club for a second stint as manager, Ipswich find themselves in a far different position.

In their past five league games, Ipswich has suffered four defeats while managing a single draw. In fact, the last time they won a Premier League match was in December last year, when they defeated Chelsea 2-0.

Letting in a mammoth 17 goals in their last five league outings, Ipswich appear to be fresh for the plucking. Still, there are some major issues that United will need to overcome in order to take advantage of the visitors’ vulnerability.

In the Everton draw, United took nine shots, but only two were on target – namely the two goals. This means that it took until the 72nd minute for the team to find the target, courtesy of a surgical Bruno Fernandes free-kick.

The previous league match saw United fall to a 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur. On that occasion, Amorim’s team took 16 shots, with the first accurate attempt coming much earlier, in the 10th minute. Still, six accurate shots were a low proportion.

In United’s 2-0 loss to Crystal Palace before that, United took a grandiose 17 shots, yet only two were on target. On that occasion, it took until the 51st minute to take an accurate shot.

As is evident, United have made a habit out of getting matches off to a very slow start in an attacking sense, particularly when it comes to taking accurate shots. It thus comes as little surprise that Amorim’s side has scored only four goals in the last five league games.

No matter how poor Ipswich have been at the back, United will not be able to exploit their gaping vulnerabilities if they do not become more aggressive up front straight out the gate.

As was evident in the Everton game, United certainly have some great attacking potential, especially when they pushed the hosts to the limit in the final 18 minutes of the match.

Still, even with such talent, United will not be able to get the better of Ipswich if they start slow as they often do and perhaps concede first, which has become a frustratingly regular occurrence.

After all, falling behind and lacking an attacking threat early on will only make the team’s job more difficult, even if they spark to life later in the match, as is regularly the case.

When United take to the Old Trafford pitch tonight, Amorim must ensure that they come out swinging from the first whistle. Anything less will only make their job harder in what should be a straightforward victory, which is quite a rare opportunity for United given the disastrous season they’ve endured.

Antony receives major boost as 25-yo’s electric start in Spain shows no signs of stopping – Fabrizio Romano

Manchester United loanee Antony has been his red card rescinded by La Liga authorities in a major boost for Real Betis as the winger is now available for this weekend’s crucial clash with Real Madrid.

Antony, 25, joined the Spanish side from the Red Devils at the end of the January transfer window after falling down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

Head coach Ruben Amorim preferred Amad, Mason Mount, Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot as options down the right-hand side of his 3-4-2-1 system ahead of the Brazilian.

A host of clubs across Europe and the Middle East expressed an interest in loaning Antony but Real Betis emerged as the 25-year-old winger’s number one option.

And it has proved a revelatory choice with Antony beginning life with Los Verdiblancos in brilliant fashion, winning a MOTM award on his debut and scoring three times with two assists in just six games in Spain.

Betis manager Manuel Pelligrini, formerly of United’s local rivals Manchester City, has been impressed with his new signing while teammate Isco believes the winger is a “brutal talent“.  The United star has even been nominated for Liga’s Player of the Month award such is his fine form.

Antony has attributed “happiness” in his newly adopted home as the reason why his performances have improved so dramatically after dismal back-to-back seasons at Old Trafford, which became more of a Theatre of Nightmares for the winger after his blockbuster move from Ajax in 2022.

However, the 25-year-old almost curtailed this positive momentum in Seville when he received a red card at the end of a 2-1 win for Betis against Getafe, after producing a beautiful assist for Isco.

Antony was sent his marching orders in added-time after a wild tackle on the Getafe defender Juan Iglesias left the referee feeling like there was no choice but an instant dismissal.

But replays showed the Brazilian winger actually tried to avoid contact with the 26-year-old fullback, despite his initial challenge being poor.

Betis chose to appeal the decision after the game with the prospect of Liga and Champions League winners Real Madrid travelling to the Estadio Benito Villamarín this weekend.

And, as Fabrizio Romano reveals, Spain’s football authorities accepted Betis’ claim and have now rescinded Antony’s red card, freeing up the 25-year-old to play against Los Blancos.

Tweet: “Antony’s red card has been officially cancelled and he will be available to play against Real Madrid. Decision communicated to Real Betis in the morning.”

Real Betis face Madrid at home on Saturday night at 5:30pm with Antony hoping to continue his fantastic form for Los Verdiblancos against the reigning champions.

Christian Eriksen believes Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu is already adapting well to his new life at Manchester United.

Eriksen, who is Denmark’s captain, knows our January addition from the time they’ve spent together in the national team.

Dorgu scored on his debut for the Scandinavians last September and has caught the eye in his early outings for the Reds.

United’s no.13 was an effervescent and athletic presence at Goodison Park on Saturday and much of our play was directed through him.

“I think you’ve seen already what he can bring,” said Eriksen a couple of days before the trip to Merseyside.

“He’s an athletic full-back and a good player on the ball that likes to go forward. And yeah, he’s a very nice guy. There’s not many Danish guys who aren’t nice guys!

“I think he fits in well. He has to get used to everything in the Prem and at this club, but he’s in good hands and I think he’ll do really well.”

Dorgu is the eighth player from Denmark to represent the Reds and a ninth has recently been added, in 17-year-old striker Chido Obi.

With Eriksen and Hojlund established members of the squad, it’s quite the contingent and Christian believes that reflects well on the nation and its talent pool.

“I think there’s always been that [interest], more or less,” he added.

“For a few years you had a good [Peter] Schmeichel here at the club, so I think the connection with Danish people has always been close.

“But at the moment, of course, we’re three or four from Denmark and it’s a lot compared to what there has been before.

“At the same time, it means that Danish guys are good players and they can play at a big club and then yeah, just really to show the country [off].”
