The shocking reason why INEOS sacked Dan Ashworth is finally unveiled – report

Dan Ashworth “opposed” redundancies in Manchester United’s football department offering a new reason why the former sporting director was dismissed by Sir Jim Ratcliffe after just five months in the role at Old Trafford, according to Duncan Castles.

INEOS have implemented a series of brutal cost-cutting measures in their first year at the helm at United after Ratcliffe’s minority stake ownership bid was ratified in February 2024.

One of the key areas United’s new co-owner focused on was installing a ‘best-in-class’ executive structure at Old Trafford, led by chief executive Omar Berrada, poached from rivals Manchester City, and Ashworth as sporting director.

Jason Wilcox was also acquired as a technical director from Southampton while Christopher Vivell was hired as an interim recruitment director, though the 38-year-old German was officially appointed to the role on a permanent basis this week.

However, in a shocking twist which offered a first tangible glimpse into INEOS’ chaotic leadership, Ratcliffe chose to sack Ashworth in December, despite a protracted and costly pursuit to capture the director from Newcastle.

Reports suggested the British billionaire was unimpressed with Ashworth’s assessment of Erik ten Hag – dismissed by United in October, despite being his contract being extended in the summer – and the executive’s approach to replacing the Dutchman.

Ruben Amorim, captured from Sporting CP to lead INEOS’ revolution at Old Trafford, was a bold selection by the club; made even bolder by the choice to insist the 40-year-old coach joined mid-season, rather than in the summer, as Amorim had communicated he’d prefer.

Ashworth is believed to have favoured a move for Brentford manager Thomas Frank, whose flexible approach, communication skills, and experience within the Premier League offered a safer option than Amorim.

But Ratcliffe did not want safe; he wanted bold, as did chief executive Berrada, who led negotiations in Lisbon with the Portuguese coach. And it was this contrast in approach which many have suggested was the principal reason behind Ashworth’s dismissal, with the 53-year-old leaving the club less than a month after Amorim arrived in Manchester.

However, speaking on The Transfers Podcast, Castles reveals Ashworth was firmly against redundancies in the football department as the executive believed it would negatively affect the first-team.

The executive believed it would be “bad” for the club to have the football departments reduced in capacity, Castles recaps.

The fact United have announced a further 200 redundancies are possible from the club’s staff body, including those within sports departments, such as the scouting team, suggests Ashworth’s reluctance to back this cull was another significant reason why INEOS pulled the trigger on his position in December.

INEOS believe United’s workforce is bloated and in desperate need of an overhaul. It’s an approach implemented wherever the Petrochemical company have taken over an underperforming business; and it was naïve to expect anything different at an unperforming football club.

If Ashworth had clashed with Ratcliffe over the reason why Ten Hag was kept on and backed in the summer; if he’d failed to see eye-to-eye with the club’s owner over the replacement for the Dutchman; and if the sporting director had rebuffed a key principle of INEOS’ approach to streamlining their businesses, it’s little wonder why the 53-year-old executive was handed his marching orders.

Whether this was the correct move remains to be seen.

Based on INEOS’ chaotic and disjointed first year in charge in England, the removal of a steady pair of hands with a wealth of executive experience in Premier League football feels an unwise one, even if it was bold. But fortune does not always favour the bold.

Man Utd transfers: Atletico Madrid eye Man Utd midfielder slammed by Ally McCoist vs Everton

Atletico Madrid have reportedly eyed one of Manchester United’s summer signings as a potential recruit this summer.

Having spent just over £182million on five players during the 2024 summer window, United added Patrick Dorgu for £27million in January but there is talk of wholesale changes in 2025.

Given the concerns over Ruben Amorim’s style of play and his wishes to stick with a formation that favours three defenders at the back, a lot of players have been left alienated, playing in a system they don’t yet understand and one that doesn’t play to their strengths.

One player who fits this narrative is Manuel Ugarte who has been inconsistent, like many others, and had to contend with multiple different midfield partners such as Casemiro, Kobbie Mainoo, Christian Eriksen, Bruno Fernandes and Toby Collyer.

Despite his deal running until 2029, he is reportedly being targeted by Atletico Madrid. According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Diego Simeone has a few options in mind to strengthen his midfield this summer.

Two midfielders listed are Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes and Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi who both are difficult deals to complete for different reasons. Guimaraes would be an extremely costly deal given his stature at St James’ Park while Zubimendi has multiple suitors in England and abroad.

Their last target on the list is United’s Ugarte, who signed for the club in the summer of 2024, penning a five-year deal in a deal worth £42million.

The report states: ‘Finally, Uruguayan Manuel Ugarte is also on Atletico’s wish list. The Manchester United player is not having the expected prominence at Old Trafford, which could facilitate his departure in the next transfer window.’

Given that there is likely to be a transfer revolution this summer given their incredibly poor form, it is naive to rule out a departure for the midfielder who has struggled for consistency.

An offer to join a thriving side where his aggressive-tackling nature would be championed would certainly be tempting given United’s shocking form that has left them 15th in the Premier League.

Ally McCoist calls out Ugarte transfer

During the draw with Everton, Ally McCoist commented on the Uruguayan midfielder during the TV commentary on TNT Sports.

Ugarte has been known for his fire and passion and was later embroiled in a tunnel dust-up with James Tarkowski, with the pair sharing plenty of words across the 90 minutes but McCoist claimed that he lacked the true ‘intensity’ during the game.

“But United have got to lift and start asking questions of opponents. You need to ask a question of the opposition back-four. They haven’t done that.

“I just think about the middle of the park, Casemiro has been slightly better but I look at Ugarte, I’m not seeing it with him at this moment in time. I’m really not seeing it. Those two aren’t really handling the intensity.”

United likely to be without red-hot academy marksman for blockbuster FA Youth Cup tie vs Arsenal – report

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has been let down massively by the forwards at his disposal with the Red Devils being the fifth-lowest scorers in the Premier League this season.

Rasmus Hojlund has not netted in 16 consecutive games now while Joshua Zirkzee has blown hot and cold with the coach even admitting that he is not a natural No 9.

Add to it Amad’s season-ending injury, Alejandro Garnacho misfiring in front of goal, and it is clear that the Portuguese tactician is short on quality up front.

INEOS moved on Antony and Marcus Rashford in January, thereby further depleting his resources which is why Amorim was forced to look inwards for a solution.

Chido Obi becoming increasingly important for Amorim

Academy sensation Chido Obi was on fire for the academy, netting 12 goals in as many games including seven strikes in three FA Youth Cup games.

Which prompted the head coach to look at him in training and he was eventually handed his debut against Tottenham Hotspur during added time.

With the Danish No 9 and Zirkzee struggling to create against Everton last weekend, Amorim opted to introduce him in the 70th minute this time.

And as per The Daily Mail, academy coaches feel Chido Obi is unlikely to be available for Friday’s blockbuster FA Youth Cup quarter-final clash against Arsenal.

He has been an ever-present feature for Adam Lawrence’s side but they feel his added involvement in the first team rules out a chance to play on Friday, especially with two huge first-team games on Wednesday and Sunday.

“Obi has been the star of the show for Adam Lawrence’s side in their cup run so far, scoring braces against Coventry City and Preston North End before adding a hat-trick in the 5-1 last-16 win over Chelsea.

FA Youth Cup participation in doubt

“He has already matched the seven goals scored by Alejandro Garnacho when United won the Youth Cup in 2022, but doubts are creeping in as to whether he will play any part against former club Arsenal on Friday night in the quarter-final.

“Gabriele Biancheri can lead the line while James Scanlon has been in fine form during this Youth Cup run but sources close to the Under 18s concede the situation is ‘complicated’ heading into Friday.

“Others around Carrington believe his Everton cameo may well have extinguished all hopes of playing an academy game between two crucial first-team games.”

A lot will depend on how Wednesday’s game against Ipswich Town pans out. If there is no need to utilise him from the bench, there might yet be a chance to see him on Friday for the U18s.

But given Hojlund and Zirkzee’s form, Chido Obi might once again be required at Old Trafford tonight.

Erik ten Hag aims dig at Man Utd players in first interview since sacking

Former Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag has aimed a dig at his former players in his first interview since being sacked by the Old Trafford hierarchy.

The Red Devils have been terrible this season with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS choosing to sack Ten Hag in October and replace him with Ruben Amorim.

Man Utd have got even worse under the Portuguese head coach with Amorim winning just four of their 15 Premier League matches this season.

Raphael Varane revealed earlier this week that he fell out with Ten Hag during his time at Old Trafford with the Dutchman leaving the centre-back out for two months.

It’s a growing opinion from managers that modern players don’t respond as well to a direct approach to criticism as players from an older generation.

And Ten Hag, who won the League Cup and FA Cup during his tenure, was frustrated by his time at Man Utd with the Dutchman finding it hard to work with modern players.

Speaking to SEG Stories, Ten Hag said: “This generation usually find it difficult to deal with criticism. Criticism really gets to them.

“The generation that I grew up in had much thicker skin. You could be much more direct.

“I was approached much more directly. If I would do that with my current group of players I would demotivate them.

“If you do that to the current generation they find it offensive.”

Ten Hag continued the Man Utd tradition of bringing through younger players with Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho coming through during his time there.

The former Man Utd boss added: “With this generation you choose different words and a different approach.

“(Sir Alex) Ferguson also belonged to the previous generation. With that generation you could be much more direct in your communication and approach.

“A player of this generation will feel ridiculed if you approach them like that.”

The ex-Ajax boss insisted that the main thing he missed about working at Man Utd was playing at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag continued: “I had already decided for myself, ‘Okay, I’m not doing anything until July 1.’

“If there’s one thing I miss it’s Old Trafford. You’re always working towards a dot on the horizon, but you never get to the horizon.

“We’ve had many highs, there is always room for improvement and good is not enough. You can do better.”

“The biggest regret is…” cult hero reveals why he failed to live up to his full potential at United

A talented striker back in the day, Federico Macheda was never able to live up to his full potential at Manchester United.

Just 17 years of age, the Italian striker became a Man United cult hero in April 2009 when he scored a dramatic 93rd-minute winner against Aston Villa.

One week later, he netted against Sunderland to secure United’s Premier League title. But despite his enormous potential, Macheda sadly fell well short of expectations.

In an interview with The Sun, Macheda revealed exactly what led to his downfall at Old Trafford.

“Sir Alex would tell everybody I was the best finisher in the club,” Macheda revealed, exhibiting just how highly then-manager Sir Alex Ferguson rated the forward. “I was surprised. It was the best team in the history of Manchester United with the names and quality.”

While unsure of the exact reason for Ferguson’s praise, Macheda assumed, “He must have some special feeling for me and for sure hoped things would be different for me.”

Soon, however, the player’s insecurities stepped in. “My dream was to keep going like I started, but I knew it was impossible. I had not just one striker in front of me but four stars of crazy value, talent and history.”

“Cristiano [Ronaldo] was an idol. It was never enough for him. Ronaldo was working next to me, swimming for one hour, but at 18 I didn’t understand this big mentality. I did what I was told but was not looking for extra steps,” Macheda explained, indicating that his efforts were far exceeded by Ronaldo.

“I never reached my full potential. Never,” Macheda admitted. “My United career should have been more. You get chances, but I didn’t take some. The biggest regret is I didn’t focus fully or work as hard as I should.”

“Sir Alex liked me lots as a player,r but I didn’t give him extra reasons to keep going with me,” the Italian concluded. “You must work 200 per cent every day to stay at United because they can have any player they want. I had the ability, but you must give more than everything to stay. I understand this now I’m older.”

While he may have missed the boat during his youth, Macheda did admit that he believes that he still has something to offer on the pitch, even going so far as to admit that he believes he could be an asset at United today.

“Now? At 33? I think I could play there. Yes. Do better? I don’t know. I must say it’s not easy to play for Manchester United now, but I think I could still play there,” he admitted.

Sadly, Macheda’s story is a warning to other players of the dangers of not putting in the full effort required to excel at United.

As young rising stars such as Amad Diallo, Alejandro Garnacho, and Kobbie Mainoo continue their ascent, they will do well to heed Macheda’s words so that they do not fall foul of the same errors as the 33 year old once did.

United target blockbuster raid for £68m PL star in a crushing blow to Spurs’ transfer plans – report

Manchester United want to sign Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze this summer but will face fierce competition from Tottenham Hotspur and Napoli for the 26-year-old midfielder, according to Ben Jacobs.

Jacobs (Give Me Sport) reveals the Red Devils are “keen” on Eze who has a £68 million release clause in his contract at Selhurst Park.

Spurs, Manchester United and Napoli all keen on signing Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace this summer according to @JacobsBen on Market Madness. The player has a £68m release clause and is open to a move but his preference is to stay in London. #CPFC #Spurs #COYS #ManUtd #Napolipic.twitter.com/bZ9zopF2RO

Tweet: “Spurs, Manchester United and Napoli all keen on signing Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace this summer according to @JacobsBen on Market Madness. The player has a £68m release clause and is open to a move but his preference is to stay in London.”

Spurs and Napoli are similarly interested in the England international but, crucially, the Lilywhites could hold a significant advantage as the player’s “preference is to stay in London.”

Eze is an attacking midfielder who is best deployed as a number ten or from the left with the freedom to drift inwards.

Palace manager Oliver Glasner utilises a 3-4-2-1 system at Selhurst Park – the exact formation Ruben Amorim has faced struggles implementing at Old Trafford.

Eze is deployed as the LAM in this set-up, a position Amorim is yet to find a suitable candidate to fill from his new cohort of players.

By contrast, Amad has seized the RAM role with both hands while Mason Mount offers a strong alternative in the position, even if both are currently ruled out with injury.

Eze would offer a significant upgrade to United’s front-line in either attacking midfield position, with his unique blend of creativity and dribbling making him an ideal number ten for Amorim.

However, a £68 million release clause is a steep price given the financial pressures at Old Trafford.

And the fact Eze turns 27 before next season is another hurdle to a potential move as INEOS continue to prioritise younger targets in their new recruitment model.

Therefore, while the Palace man’s profile as an attacking midfielder lends itself perfectly to the new system being implemented on the pitch at United, the club’s new approach off the pitch is likely to rule out a blockbuster raid on South London.

United are badly missing star with “nasty streak” who “takes the mickey out of teammates”, says former coach

Manchester United’s woeful performance in the transfer market over the last decade can be summed up by the signing of Brazilian winger Antony who joined the club for a whopping £80 million in the summer of 2023.

After a disastrous couple of seasons at Old Trafford the forward is now on loan at Real Betis with his United future all but over.

Furthermore, United are unlikely to recoup even half of the eye watering fee with the deal surely having to go down as one of the worst in a long list of recruitment nightmares.

Despite Antony not being up to the required standard to represent United, he has picked up some form in Spain, starting his loan spell well with some eye catching moments.

As reported by ESPN, former United coach Benni McCarthy has spoken on the qualities of the 25-year-old and says he is disappointed things didn’t go as planned for the player in Manchester.

McCarthy praised the forward’s attitude during his time at United and says he has the qualities to succeed at the top level due to his desire to work hard for the team.

“Antony has nice ways about him – he trains well, he’ll really listen to his coaches because he’s willing to learn.

When a concept clicks with him it really clicks, he has skills in abundance and, unlike most players of his ability, he’s always willing to get back and help his defender or to press and rob the ball,” he said.

McCarthy says that Antony’s personality and drive is likely down to his tough upbringing and admits that he clicked with the former Ajax man during his time at the club.

“I recognise his personality because he was born in a favela and I grew up playing with gangsters in the opposition team or on the touchline. He’s got a good nasty streak in him… if you kick him then be prepared to be kicked back,” he said.

Antony was was one of the best players in training sessions according to the South African coach who admits he expected more from the wide man but feels that expectations were too high on a youngster making a big move to the Premier League.

“But I loved watching him in training, taking the mickey out of other players with the ball — he has so much dazzling ability that I was hugely disappointed that, simply because he was young, there were too many expectations and there’s no time to settle-in at United, it looked like he wasn’t going to make it,” he added.

McCarthy now believes the “gifted” attacker is now “showing people his real level” in La Liga and expects him to continue his good form on the continent.

Meanwhile, United are struggling to pick up any consistency under Ruben Amorim and will be hoping for an upturn in form to salvage something from what has been a wretched season to date.

Real Madrid left furious with surprise Antony decision as United star continues to make headlines in Spain

Real Madrid have been left furious with Spanish football’s Disciplinary Committee’s decision to overturn Manchester United loanee Antony’s suspension.

Antony has enjoyed a terrific start to life in Spain after moving to Real Betis on loan until the end of the season.

The Brazilian winger struggled to replicate his Ajax form after joining United in 2022 in a deal worth £85 million.

The departure of Erik ten Hag further limited his game time at Old Trafford and eventually, the Red Devils decided to send him to Betis in the winter window.

The 25-year-old has quickly established himself as a key player under Manuel Pellegrini, having scored three goals and provided two assists in five matches across all competitions.

He suffered an early hiccup at Betis after he was sent off during stoppage time in his side’s 2-1 win over Getafe on Sunday for a rash challenge onJuan Iglesias.

The Brazil international was accordingly banned for one game, which ruled him out of contention for Los Verdiblancos’s outing against Real.

However, he is now free to face Los Blancos after winning an appeal against the initial decision. This has caused “total indignation” at Santiago Bernabeu.

According to AS (via Sport Witness), Spanish football’s Disciplinary Committee’s decision has infuriated the Madrid giants.

Real claim that the DC “skips the legal arguments” and have insisted “they are not going to bow their heads in the face of such foolishness.”

As far as Betis are concerned, the club’s hierarchy are understood to be delighted with the development heading into the crucial encounter.

Should Antony manage to dent Real’s title hopes with another impressive showing, it would be interesting to follow the reaction to the same in the Spanish capital.

Man Utd news: Merson tells Man Utd boss he is ‘the problem’ and he needs to ‘change it’ or risk facing the sack

Paul Merson has branded Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim the ‘problem’ amid their woeful run of form.

In what has been United’s worst season since 1974, Amorim’s side sit 15th in the Premier League table but remain in both the FA Cup and Europa League, holding slim hopes of a success.

A late comeback against Everton helped to avoid a third defeat in five games in the league but there was controversy at the end regarding a late penalty decision which nearly derailed their good work.

But their schedule is unrelenting as they face Real Sociedad in the Europa League as well as Fulham in the FA Cup alongside league games against Ipswich Town, Arsenal and Leicester City – totalling six games in 18 days before the March international break.

Merson calls out Amorim’s tactical stubbornness

In late December, Amorim defiantly claimed that he would not change his system as, in his own words “If I change everything now, we are going to lose everything,” in regards to his 3-4-1-2 formation.

With many calling out United’s squad for not being built for such a system, Merson believes that he simply has to ‘change it’ – at least until the end of the season when he can source those much-needed reinforcements.

“Ruben Amorim is the problem at Manchester United,” Merson told Sky Sports. “The three at the back isn’t working the way he’d planned. So, change it.

“He’s not helping the players, he’s helping himself by just keeping it the way he’s been used to playing all his managerial career or most of it.

“Top managers are flexible. they need to start playing a different way because they won’t beat Real Sociedad, playing like this. They don’t have the money to start all over again. They’ll have to go with this man. But my worry is, we all know that they can’t play three at the back, we know they’re all over the place.

“They haven’t got the feet and the legs in midfield. So change it. He keeps on sending these players out to fail and, at the moment, that’s what’s happening every other week. This Man Utd team won’t win the Premier League. They need five or six players, so why not just play to their strengths, get through this season, and then go and get the players you need?”

Carragher comments on INEOS and their manager selection

Any calls on sacking the former Sporting seem to be a moot point given it would reportedly cost United around £12million if they were to pull the trigger. Jamie Carragher has even commented on INEOS and their over-eagerness to appoint the Portuguese manager, claiming perhaps they jumped the gun with his appointment after Erik Ten Hag’s sacking.

Carragher said on The Overlap: “The people at the top at Man United they’re only human. There’s no doubt in my mind that Jim Ratcliffe will be thinking ‘have we made a mistake’.

“I’m not saying they should change manager, but my point being is when a manager comes in at club… I’m not expecting Man United to be amazing, but I’m not expecting to see this. He’s had a brilliant start to his managerial career. That’s why Liverpool looked at him and why Man United took him.

“I’m not saying they should change the manager but because the results and performances are that bad it will create doubt. That’s just human nature in the boardroom and the dressing room.”
