Video: United maestro wins both Player of the Month and Goal of the Month for February

Ruben Amorim suffered another turbulent month as Manchester United’s head coach with February providing a real mixed bag of results for his side who still sit firmly in the bottom half of the Premier League.

However, it was a productive month for club captain Bruno Fernandes who once again proved his worth with some all-action displays that played a huge role in United managing the positive results they did.

As reported by club media, the skipper’s efforts were recognised by the fans as he picked up United’s Player of the Month and Goal of the Month awards for February.

Fernandes was undoubtedly United’s stand out player over the five games which saw a few tireless display that included multiple goals and assists.

Harry Maguire and Joshua Zirkzee were also in the running for the crown but Fernandes won by a landslide with an impressive 69% of the overall votes.

It was his excellent driven cross that allowed Maguire to head United into Round Five of the FA Cup and his set-piece skills also helped to his team overcome Ipswich Town at Old Trafford in the last game of February despite being a man down.

Additionally, his outstanding free kick lit the spark for an unlikely comeback against Everton that meant United left Goodison Park with a point in what was their last-ever visit to the ground.

That was the strike that secured the Goal of the Month crown out of the seven efforts United managed in February.

United were in desperate need of inspiration after a woeful first hour on Merseyside with Fernandes stood over a dead ball, 25 yards out from Jordan Pickford’s goal.

With the England keeper expecting the ball to go over his wall, a fatal step to his right resulted in the Portuguese slamming the ball into the unguarded side of the net, halving the deficit which Manuel Ugarte ultimately wiped out to help secure a point.

Despite his good spell of form, Amorim has found himself defending his captain from some unwarranted criticism from former United captain Roy Keane over the last few days.

United’s head coach is under no illusions of the importance of his captain and will be desperate for him to continue his good form until the end of the season.

United face hugely important fixtures in March, and have the chance to progress in both cup competitions they are still alive in while also attempting to find some consistency in the league

The Portuguese Magnifico will no doubt play a huge role in any success United are to enjoy between now and the end of the campaign, starting with today’s visit of Fulham in the FA Cup.

United academy graduate vows to make Red Devils regret their transfer decision with brilliant performance at Old Trafford

Former Manchester United midfielder Andreas Pereira is keen on knocking the Red Devils out of the FA Cup.

United welcome Fulham to Old Trafford for their 5th round FA Cup clash on Sunday afternoon.

Despite his side’s win over Ipswich Town, Ruben Amorim finds himself under pressure heading into the tie. With little left to play for in the Premier League, 14th-placed United rely on cup competitions to deliver something come the end of the season.

Pereira, meanwhile, is planning to break United hearts, as he remains determined to prove the club’s hierarchy wrong.

The Brazilian midfielder made his senior breakthrough at United but failed to cement his place in the starting lineup under different managers.

After several underwhelming loan stints, the Mancunians agreed to sell Pereira to Fulham in 2022 in a deal reported to be worth around £10m with a 20 per cent sell-on clause in their favour.

Now 29, he has established himself as one of Fulham’s most important players, impressing with his passing range and versatility.

Ahead of the trip to his boyhood club, the Brazil international spoke to The Analyst and underlined his desire to show his skill sets at the Theatre of Dreams.

“I don’t think I got my full chance to play and show my quality when I was there,” he said.

“Fulham gave me that opportunity, they did everything for me, and I want to do everything for them. So, whenever I play at Old Trafford, I want to show that United made a mistake.”

Pereira is certainly motivated but it is not going to be easy for him to stun his former club.

Despite enduring a disastrous season, United have still managed to do the league double over Marco Silva’s men this season. Their latest win over the Cottagers came in January, courtesy of Lisandro Martinez’s brilliant late strike in London.

Stunning Rashford stat leads Keane to make ‘strange’ point about Man Utd loanee

Roy Keane thinks Marcus Rashford will feel “strangely” frustrated at Aston Villa despite his impressive start following his loan move from Manchester United.

Rashford came off the bench at half-time against Chelsea in the Premier League to claim two assists to turn the game on its head and got his third Villa assist in another impressive performance in the 2-0 FA Cup win over Coventry on Friday.

Hosts Villa were frustrated in the opening 45 minutes by the Championship side, but Rashford helped find the breakthrough, putting the ball on a plate for Marco Asensio with a first-time cross from the left flank.

Asensio doubled the lead in the 80th minute and Villa held firm to secure a place in the quarter-finals for the first time since their run to the final in 2015.

“He does [shape his run intelligently] and that’s what Marcus should be doing more of,” Keane said of Rashford’s assist on ITV after Villa’s 2-0 victory.

“You give good players time on the ball and you’re in trouble. We saw it in the first half and Marcus is very good at doing that.

“This is obviously one of Marcus’ big strengths. He has a bit of luck at the end, I’m not sure he’s trying to pick out Asensio.

“But to be fair, he needs a bit of luck, he’s put it into the right area and a quality player walking onto it, one-touch finish.

“No chance for the goalkeeper. Lovely, simple, effective goal.”

No Premier League player has created more than Rashford’s 13 chances since he swapped United for Villa in January.

Having been informed of the stat, Keane said: “Strangely enough, I think Marcus has done well with the assists, but I still think he will be thinking: ‘I want to score a few goals myself’.”

Arsenal legend Ian Wright agreed that Rashford should be looking to contribute goals in the coming weeks.

“It’s still bitty. You’re still seeing quality,” Wright said.

“He got a bit fortunate in respects of that cut-back. But in the main, he’s trying to go at people, I think he could that more.

“Like Roy said, I would like to see him score a couple of goals. It’s not like he’s not trying but he’s just easing himself in, he’s getting going.”

Keane added that he believes Villa boss Unai Emery now has something other managers of top teams don’t.

“We argue most weekends about options. We’ve seen Manchester City struggling with Haaland, obviously Arsenal,” he added.

“As a top manager with a big club, you want options and Villa have got plenty of options.

“It’s just about getting the balance right: who to put in, who to take out and it’s good for the manager.

“That’s what you need with a lot of games coming up.”

Man Utd: Roy Keane is right, the redundancy ‘blame’ upset proves they’re ‘f***ing imposters’

A penny for Roy Keane’s thoughts on the Manchester United snowflakes getting all upset at Ruben Amorim supposedly ‘blaming’ them for the mass redundancies at the club. They really are a bunch of “f***ing imposters”.

The head coach, in his typically erudite and amenable manner, has merely admitted that he and his failing squad of extraordinarily wealthy footballers should feel responsible for the 250 members of club staff who lost their jobs last year and the 200 further employees who have just been given their marching orders this month. Of course they should.

Around 80 per cent of the club’s outlay goes on player wages. All 450 members of staff to have been made redundant could have stayed on earning £40k if Casemiro wasn’t stealing his £18m per year living.

And sure, it’s not Casemiro’s fault he was offered that contract, but at no point did Amorim say whoever made the absurd decision to offer a 30-year-old a four-year £350,000 per week deal wasn’t also to blame, he just can’t and won’t say that, and we’re guessing the overly sensitive Manchester United players would probably also take issue with their finger-pointing manager claiming they should never have been signed in the first place.

There really is no hope for these Manchester United players if they a) don’t agree entirely with their manager’s sentiments and b) don’t at least try to use the weight of that responsibility to improve their performances to the point where they can win games of football, move up the table, qualify for the Champions League and keep the people relying on them in employment.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his Ineos misers wouldn’t need to be returning sellotape or laying off hungry staff members if the Manchester United men’s team was better at football. It’s as simple as that. And to not feel guilt or shame for failing to perform is one thing, but to be ‘frustrated at being blamed’ is beyond the pale. As Keane would say, just do your jobs.

That frustration would be valid if these players were performing at their peaks and being blamed for not being good enough but let’s face it, even though this is not a great United squad, not one of those players has played anywhere close to their best this season. And there’s nothing – not the pressure of the club, the change of manager, Amorim’s system – that can excuse just how bad they’ve been individually and collectively.

This mess is on the Glazers, it’s on Ratcliffe, it’s on Erik ten Hag, it may also be a bit on Amorim, but it’s also definitely on them, and being put out by Amorim suggesting that them being sh*t isn’t conducive to the club being successful points to a stunning lack of self awareness and a Passing The Buck ethos that needs to stamped out if this club is going to climb out of the doldrums.

We imagine Gary Neville and the Stick to Football producers are rubbing their hands together at the prospect of pointing their camera at Keane and asking him about his thoughts on this latest case of the “f***ing imposters” at Old Trafford complaining about their manager’s hard truths about their predicament rather than doing something about it.

“Forget the board and all that for a second,” Keane said in his extraordinarily angry rant this week. “The players who walk on the pitch, who do you start pointing fingers at?” All of them is the answer.

With Antony and Marcus Rashford following Jadon Sancho out of the club they’re running out of scapegoats, who are enjoying the green grass of pastures new because they’re not in an environment where adults act like toddlers, failing to take responsibility for their actions which have very real consequences for people who need to worry about how they’re going to pay their gas bill or nursery fees next month.

We appreciate that times have changed, hairdryers are no longer in use and kicking boots into faces isn’t The Done Thing, but these Manchester United players need to be given a reality check, to think beyond their bubble, because these people losing their jobs is on them.

Rightly or wrongly they were signed by Manchester United – MANCHESTER UNITED – and they presumably thought they were worthy of that honour when they signed the paperwork. Well, f***ing prove it then.

Two Danes to replace two others against Fulham as Amorim takes a huge gamble – prediction

Manchester United will be without Patrick Dorgu for today’s FA Cup tie against Fulham as he begins his three-match suspension following a straight red card against Ipswich in midweek.

The defence

The Dane’s place will almost certainly be taken by Noussair Mazraoui, who head coach Ruben Amorim had tried to rest in that game but who was pressed into action following the sending off.

Mazraoui may play at right wing back, with Diogo Dalot switching to the left.

The back three will probably be unchanged, with Matthijs de Ligt on the right, Harry Maguire in the middle and Leny Yoro on the left.

Victor Lindelof is another option.

As far as we know, Altay Bayindir is still injured so Andre Onana is likely to continue in goal.

Midfield and attack

Alejandro Garnacho has suffered a knock but Amorim said in the press conference he should be fit. However, we think Christian Eriksen might be given a run out in one of the twin 10 positions or in midfield alongside Manu Ugarte, with Bruno Fernandes taking the other role.

Garnacho could then be kept in cotton wool and used as an impact sub if necessary.

Rasmus Hojlund will probably continue up top, with Josh Zirkzee the other 10.

Chido Obi was not included in the FA Youth Cup match against Arsenal on Friday so will be on the bench at least. Amorim may even surprise everyone and replace one Danish striker with another.

Luke Shaw, Jonny Evans, Lisandro Martinez, Mason Mount and Amad are all injured.

Here, then, is our predicted line-up for the match, with Obi potentially replacing Hojlund:

Kick-off at Old Trafford is at 4.30pm GMT.

Amorim unhappy with lack of quality in key area, United have two world-class replacements in mind – report

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim wants more intensity in the middle of the park and he is far from happy with the options at his disposal.

He has already informed the hierarchy about how haphazard the recruitment has been in the recent past with the Portuguese tactician not happy with having two 33-year-old midfielders.

Christian Eriksen is unlikely to be offered a new deal while despite Casemiro’s stance of seeing out his contract, INEOS want to get rid in the summer.

Mason Mount’s injury problems show no signs of abating which is why Amorim has been forced to play Bruno Fernandes alongside Manuel Ugarte even though the club captain prefers to play in an advanced role.

Amorim demands more legs in midfield

Kobbie Mainoo’s injury has come at the worst possible time but the former Sporting boss feels the England international is more suited to playing as an attacking midfielder as he does not possess the legs to play as a defensive midfielder.

United have two midfielders in mind to add more legs and steel to the midfield with Givemesport claiming the Red Devils are keeping an eye on Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad and Angelo Stiller of VfB Stuttgart.

The Spaniard has been a long-term target and plenty of other Premier League outfits are also chasing his signature. Amorim can take a closer look at him when his side take on the Basque outfit in the Europa League Round of 16.

The German is a new name added to the list and he is only 23 and would cost less than Zubimendi. The 23-year-old has excelled since leaving Bayern Munich and has even broken into to the German national team set-up.

“Manuel Ugarte is establishing himself as a key performer for Ruben Amorim – but United’s midfield still needs more legs according to training ground insiders. While Casemiro and Christian Eriksen have been used in midfield, Amorim accepts they don’t provide the dynamic energy required.

Two targets identified

“And there are reservations that Kobbie Mainoo hasn’t got the pace or stamina to cover the ground as a defensive midfielder and is better further forward in a more attacking role.

“United will get a good look at one of those targets – Martin Zubimendi – when they meet Real Sociedad next week in the Europa League last 16.

“Zubimendi, valued at £55 million, turned down Liverpool to stay at Sociedad last summer but is expected to move at the end of the season. So too is Stuttgart midfielder Angelo Stiller, 23, with the German midfielder likely to move for around £35 million.”

Both profiles fit Amorim’s system but whether INEOS can afford such an outlay when they also need a striker and another wingback remains to be seen.

Which is why links with former United prodigy Angel Gomes, who is available on a free, are increasing by the day.

“They already know”: Ruben Amorim says he has told players they will have to leave United this summer

Ruben Amorim says he has already told some of his Manchester United players that they will have to leave the club in June.

In the embargoed section of the pre-match press conference for tomorrow’s FA Cup clash with Fulham at Old Trafford, Amorim was first asked if he thinks he is a better manager now than when he joined United.

“Better is hard to say, because I am not winning games,” he said. “But in three months here, I live certain things that I’m a more complete manager.

“Sometimes you need to lose and be in a poor situation to grow. I felt that during these three months. I am not going to die if I lose three games in a row. I learned that here. I can cope and maintain my energy. I am learning a lot about myself and the players, but I prefer to win games.”

The next question was whether the owners had been honest with him about the condition the club is in when he joined.

“I see a clear path, and I see that from the board also,” he replied. “They are also doing difficult changes.

“I knew the situation. I felt like they were honest, but I need to see things and feel things myself. Today’s really hard, but I think we’re doing things that are going to help us in the future.

He was then asked “Is there anything positive?”

“They are not popular but they are doing difficult changes, but they’re doing it because they have a vision,” he replied in regard to INEOS.

“In the future we need to show some results. You can do a lot of changes but if you don’t have results, people don’t feel confident and happy.

“The good thing is we have a clear path. Now is hard but we are doing things to achieve success in the future.”

The head coach was also asked if he feels he is ruthless enough with the players.

“It’s a balance of everything. If I see the team is trying, but they cannot do it, I’m not ruthless. I don’t like to be like that just to show strength.

“I have to feel it, because you can have two exactly the same situation, but the context is different, and I’m trying to understand everything in my team to make them better.

“But when I feel it’s something that’s going to harm the team, I can be quite ruthless.”

The reporter then pressed Amorim on the need to be ruthless at the end of the season when he may have to tell players they need to leave.

“We have a lot of games to play, but that is clear, but it is not a difficult situation because that is football, sometimes you stay and sometimes you have to move on.

“If you have to explain, for me it’s easy, and I like to do it, because I like to be clear. When you’re honest with someone, they can take it in the beginning it’s hard, but they will understand. So I’m quite honest with my players and they already know that sometimes they’ll have to move on at the end of the season.

Finally, Amorim was asked if Harry Maguire’s form is good enough for an England call-up and whether he would prefer him to be rested.

“If it’s enough that’s with the national coach.I would be really happy for him. I think he deserves it, he’s a great guy.

“I think he still needs to improve, he can improve a lot of things, but I think his performances at the moment are quite good.

“You feel that he’s more a leader now, and that can help the national team.”

Amorim’s remarks from the first part of the presser can be read here.

Amorim: I think Harry deserves an England recall

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim believes Harry Maguire should be considered for an England recall.

Our no.5 has been a standout perform for the Reds in recent weeks, notably netting two winners against Leicester City (in the FA Cup) and Ipswich Town recently.

Harry has been selected largely as the central centre-back in Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system and seems to be finding his feet within the tactical set-up.

Our head coach discussed Maguire’s plan to continue playing for the Three Lions, and more, in the second part of his pre-match press conference ahead of Fulham’s visit tomorrow.

Scroll down to read the full quotes from the boss…

Part two: Press conference v Fulham Video

Part two: Press conference v Fulham

Press conference part two | Ruben talks ruthlessness, settling in at United and Harry Maguire ahead of Fulham’s visit…

Hi Ruben, when you arrived, you said you have the capability of being ruthless. Do you feel you have had to be more ruthless than you anticipated and will you have to show that characteristic to move the team to where you want it to be?
“It’s a balance of everything. If the team is trying and I understand they are trying but cannot do it, I am not ruthless. I don’t like to be like that just to be, or to show strength. I just understand and I have the feeling [of] what I’m seeing. You can have two similar situations but the context is completely different. I’m trying to understand everything in my team to help them to be better. But when I feel it’s something that is going to harm the team, I’m quite ruthless because I know for sure we are not going to win with certain behaviours. So, I’m trying to make a balance of everything and just help the team.”

Come the end of the season, whatever you do for the remaining two or three months, you’re going to have to show a ruthless side at the end of the season because it does need changes, by your own admission. Which does mean, for some of them, it’s going to be: ‘Sorry mate, on your bike’…
“We can talk about that in the end [of the season] because it’s hard… we have a lot of games still to play and talk about and but that is clear. And I think that is not a difficult situation because everybody understands that in football, sometimes you stay, sometimes you have to move on. If you know how to explain it, for me, it is easy. If I know how to explain, I can do it and I like to do it because I want to be clear. When I was a player also, because I like to use all that experience. When you are honest with someone, in the beginning it is hard, but they will understand. So, I’m quite honest with my players and they already know that sometimes they have to move on at the end of the season.”

You’re obviously learning a lot about these players, what have you learnt about yourself being at Man United? Are you a better manager, are you a different manager from the guy that first walked through the door? How have you changed?
“Better? It’s hard to say because I’m not winning games so I don’t feel like a better coach. In three months here, I lived certain things [that mean] I’m a more complete manager, because sometimes you need to lose and be in a poor situation to grow. And I felt that during these three months. I’m not going to die if I lose three games in a row, that’s something I learned here, and I can cope and maintain the energy. So, I’m learning a lot about myself and the players but I prefer to win games, that is clear.”

When you’ve worked inside the club for three months, you obviously get a very clear picture of what needs to be done. But the picture that was presented to you before you came to the club, was that a genuine one? Were the owners honest with you about not just the strength of the team but the position of the club financially?
“That is hard… I knew the situation but then it’s hard because your procession in the same situation as me can be different so it’s hard to say if they are honest or not. I felt they were honest, but I need to see things and feel things myself. So, it’s always a different opinion in that matter. I knew the situation, I knew that it was a risk but we are surviving and doing everything. I think today is really hard, I know, but this is going to help us in the future, I hope. So, we will see.”

There is a lot of negativity around the club, but is there anything positive you can offer the fans going forward?
“I see a clear path and I see that from the board also. They are doing difficult changes, they are not popular, but they are doing [them] because they have a vision. I think that is clear. But in the future, we need to show some results because you can do a lot of changes but if you don’t have results, people don’t feel confidence and happy. That is winning games. I think the good thing is we have a clear path, now is hard but we are doing things to achieve success in the future.”

Can I ask you about Harry Maguire: do you think his form is good enough to be considered by England? And would you like him to be called up by England or do you think he needs a rest when the international break comes?
“If it’s enough is with the national coach. I would be really happy for him, I think he deserves [it]. He is a great guy, I think he needs to still improve because when you are a player you can improve every time and improve a lot of things. But I think his performances in the moment are quite good and you feel he is more a leader now that can help a national team, so I hope he is in the national team in the next games.”

Ineos add two massive names to summer transfer list, this will blow fans’ minds – report

Apart from big-name stars underperforming, Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim has also had to deal with multiple injuries with key players missing large chunks of the season while a couple have already been ruled out for the rest of the campaign.

Lisandro Martinez and Amad’s injuries have been huge blows given their form while Kobbie Mainoo missing more than a month has also come at the worst possible time.

The ex-Sporting boss is also without Mason Mount, who suffered an injury relatively early on during Amorim’s reign. In fact, the former Chelsea ace has missed 26 games already this term while he was sidelined for 31 games last season.

On paper, Mount definitely fits in with what the head coach wants from his players but given his availability, it is hard to trust him.

Mount injury issues

The head coach is so short on options in the middle of the pitch that he has mulled over handing academy wonderkid Sekou Kone his debut this season.

Casemiro simply cannot be trusted to play consistently which is why Bruno Fernandes has been forced to play in a deeper role alongside Manuel Ugarte.

The Brazilian reportedly wants to see out his contract which has another year to run while INEOS want to get rid due to his unsuitability as well as his humongous wages of £350,000 gross per week (via capology).

Then there is Luke Shaw and the less said about his injury record the better. Ever since that double leg break, he has been prone to regular breakdowns and the frequency of injuries have increased in the last couple of seasons.

As per Givemesport, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Co have held a meeting about moving on stars with poor injury records and players who do not fit the system.

The new financial reality at Old Trafford has meant plenty of high earners might be moved on with Marcus Rashford and Antony already departing in January.

And INEOS reportedly see no reason to keep a hold of the three unfit stars, especially given their injury history and the wages they earn.

INEOS fed up with Shaw, Mount, Casemiro

“Questions over the future of injury-prone Luke Shaw aren’t only confined to the training ground it seems.

“Amid the huge cost-cutting measures implemented by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his management team at Old Trafford, it’s believed discussions have taken place over the reliability, durability and fitness of stars like Shaw, Casemiro and Mason Mount.

“They’ve been perplexed at the on-going cost of keeping a player like Shaw who no longer fits the blueprint they require. The new regime want value for money – and they don’t see £150,000-a-week Shaw or £350,000-a-week Casemiro offering that.

“That’s why both will be allowed to leave as Ratcliffe and co look to cull the playing squad of passengers and align more with Profit and Sustainability Rules.”

But whether the club can recoup a huge amount from their sales remains to be seen. Not too many clubs will be eager to pay big money for the trio.
