Hojlund shocking as ever, but this star was the real reason United lost vs Fulham

Manchester United were beaten on penalties by Fulham to come crashing out of the FA Cup. Here are our player ratings from the game.

(A score of 6 is around average)

Andre Onana 6 – Some nervy moments but didn’t make a mistake on this occasion. Not much he could do about Calvin Bassey’s goal. Great saved in added time to deny Emile Smith Rowe and keep United in the game.

Matthijs de Ligt 8 – Solid defensively and utilised the ball well. Looked to pass forward whenever the opportunity presented itself. Followed his man in the press and was a physical beast. Gave absolutely everything.

Harry Maguire 6 – Decent performance. Quietly went about his job before going off with an injury.

Leny Yoro 6 – Same as Maguire. Early substitution was odd but maybe he picked up a knock that necessitated the change.

Noussair Mazraoui 5 – Lost sight of Bassey for Fulham’s opener but apart from that, didn’t do much else wrong.

Manuel Ugarte 7 – Battled hard in midfield, mostly coming out on top in his duels and challenges. Some positive contributions in the final third.

Bruno Fernandes 8.5 – Where would United be this season without him? Had United’s best chance during the opening 45 minutes but was thwarted by Leno. While Fulham were leading and the Red Devils appeared short of ideas and inspiration, he came up with an excellent finish to draw his side level.

Diogo Dalot 7 – Got involved in the attack a lot more than usual and also good defensively. Registered an assist for United’s equaliser.

Christian Eriksen 6 – Started brightly as he was afforded plenty of space and time on the ball but his influence on the game waned as time went by.

Joshua Zirkzee 5 – Got caught in possession a few times. Didn’t offer nearly enough threat in regular time, bar his improvised effort into the side netting. Missed his penalty in the shootout.

Rasmus Hojlund 3 – Slightly better than he has been over the past few weeks but there’s still a lot he needs to improve on. Missed a good chance from Eriksen’s cross.

Substitutes

Alejandro Garnacho 6 – Bright when he came on, giving United something different in attack. Fired a shot at the Fulham goal but it was too weak to trouble Leno.

Victor Lindelof 3 – A massive downgrade on Yoro and was bullied a few times. Missed his penalty in the shootout.

Chido Obi 7 – A handful during the time he was on the pitch. Got into some good positions and had one or two sights of goal, including a curled effort that forced Leno into a save. Held up his own against the physical Bassey. Superb from the youngster.

Casemiro 7 – Fantastic cameo. A number of brilliant balls over the top and also looked to get involved in forward areas.

Ayden Heaven 6 – Didn’t miss a step on his United debut. Slotted seamlessly into the three-man defence system and helped keep the Cottagers out in extra time.

Skinner explains injury absences against Leicester

Sunday 02 March 2025 16:07

Marc Skinner clarified after the final whistle why a number of Manchester United players were absent from Sunday’s WSL victory over Leicester.

The names of Elisabeth Terland, Jayde Riviere, Simi Awujo and Anna Sandberg were absent from the matchday squad for the visit of the Foxes following the international break. Lisa Naalsund also remained sidelined. But, positively, all are considered “on the cusp” of being available again.

Melvine Malard admirably deputised for Terland up front, but it was a blow for the in-form Norwegian after she had scored in every United game in February.

“Teri took a small break to her wrist, but you can manage these things with splints and so on. We’re hopeful she can potentially come back over the next couple of weeks,” Skinner said of the unfortunate situation.

Teri linked up with former United defender Maria Thorisdottir for Norway.

Discussing United’s Canadian pair, the boss continued: “Jayde was a muscle injury. She played two games back-to-back [for Canada] and you’ve got to look at loading, which is disappointing for us. Simi took a knock in training, which again happens. But, for me, it’s about ensuring they come back.”

Sandberg, who was part of Sweden’s Under-23 squad last month, missed out against Leicester because of a sickness bug.

There is also hope that Naalsund will be available “very soon”, having been ruled out through injury since November.

“It’s really important that as they go away on international duty, they return as best they can be, because they want play this exciting end to the season,” Skinner said.

The next international break is at the start of April. But attention for United now turns to next weekend’s FA Cup quarter-final tie against Sunderland at Leigh Sports Village, with the Reds hoping to continue in the defence of our trophy.

Tickets for that match are available here.

Manchester United felt the intensity of being back in action so soon after February’s international break for the visit of Leicester City on Sunday afternoon, but still managed to extend the current winning run to a seventh league game.

Leicester fought back admirably in the second half and crafted a number of chances that they ultimately weren’t able to take. Those that did hit the target were gathered expertly by Phallon Tullis-Joyce, who also claimed multiple high crosses to alleviate pressure on the Reds defence.

In Marc Skinner’s words, United’s players, many of whom reported back to Carrington after international duty with only a day or two to train, were “fuming” with the second half. It highlights the standards that the team have come to expect from themselves.

United had dominated the first half and took a 2-0 lead into the break that proved to be enough to claim maximum points come full-time around an hour later.

With Elisabeth Terland not involved due to a knock, Melvine Malard was an addition to the starting line-up in the ‘number-nine’ role – reflective of the digit on her back – and took her opportunity gladly.

Malard was at the heart of everything that was good about the Reds in an attacking sense. She led the line incredibly well and opened the scoring after 19 minutes in superb fashion. The goal was epitome of keeping a cool head when it mattered most, using her pace to latch onto a through pass, before sitting down Leicester goalkeeper with a feint without actually touching the ball. The finish was just as good.

The France international worked well in tandem with Leah Galton all afternoon, laying on our second goal for the relentless winger, and the pair came second and third respectively in the running to be named our Player of the Match, a vote decided by supporters in the United App.

Malard claimed 29 per cent of all selections – to finish narrowly behind our winner – while Galton rounded out the medal places with 10 per cent after her own fine showing.

Today’s honours were claimed, however, by Ella Toone, after our no.7 put on another impressive display just days after helping England to beat world champions Spain at Wembley Stadium.

Ella set up Malard’s all-important opener on the afternoon, threading through a perfect pass to create a one-on-one opportunity, and got the ‘assist before the assist’ after feeding the ball into the latter again in the build-up to Galton’s goal.

Those involvements were the highlight of another impactful showing from Toone, who has arguably been United’s form player so far in 2025.

Thank you to everyone who voted, and congratulations to Tooney on scooping the prize.

Amorim reveals ‘small thing’ Man Utd star is doing to ‘rival’ Arsenal hero like Rio Ferdinand predicts

Ruben Amorim has revealed one of the “small things” Manchester United defender Leny Yoro is doing in order to become a “top, top, top player” at Old Trafford.

Yoro joined the Red Devils in the summer in a £52m transfer from Lille but has has made just six Premier League starts having suffered an ankle injury on the eve of the season that kept him out for the first four months.

The 19-year-old has looked as though he’s struggled with the physicality of English football at times when he has played, but he impressed in the win over Ipswich and Amorim offered a possible explanation as to why.

“He is working really, really hard,” Amorim told MUTV. “I think he is gaining muscle, all these small things that you cannot see.

“I think he is going to be a top, top, top player and is going to have a great career here in Manchester. But for that, he knows that he has to prove [himself] in every match, so he is going to be ready for the next one.”

Earlier in the season, Red Devils legend Rio Ferdinand backed Yoro to challenge William Saliba for the crown of being “the best defender in the world” after Virgil van Dijk hangs up his boots.

“I think he’s [Saliba] going to be the best defender in the world,” Ferdinand said on Rio Ferdinand Presents.

“Saliba will be the best defender in the world when Virgil van Dijk gives up that post.

“As soon as that happens, it could be in a year, it could be three years. Whenever it’s going to be I don’t see anyone else taking over.

“The only person I see, the person who I think will rival him and it will be close is Leny Yoro.”

Mikael Silvestre, another former United defender, claims Yoro is “next in line” for France.

“From his time in Lille, we’ve seen that he’s athletically dominant, he makes the right calls when recovering the ball and has good timing,” Silvestre said.

“It’s unfortunate that he got injured early in pre-season because I think he will be a major force at United in the coming years. He still has some things that he can learn, of course, he is not the finished article, but he’s got so much potential. When you look at [William] Saliba and [Ibrahima] Konate for France, for me he is next in line.”

United’s team is still struggling to find consistency but Silvestre also admitted how Amorim should be allowed more time to shape his team how he wishes, especially defensively.

“Amorim is forcing players to adapt quickly at the moment and it’s not working,” he added. “You can’t just flick a switch from one day to the other for players.

“They have to suit what the manager wants. You see with Dorgu, this is a player who is meant to play in his formation, but I’m not sure [Noussair] Mazraoui or [Diogo] Dalot can do it properly.

“I think he is a good manager. It is just wrong timing. Coming in the middle of the season is always difficult and also the players’ self-belief is not there.”

Confirmed United XI vs Fulham: Eriksen, Mazraoui in for Dorgu and Garnacho

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has, as expected, fielded a strong side to face Fulham in the FA Cup fifth round today.

With the Red Devils languishing in 14th place in the Premier League, winning a cup may be their best chance of qualifying for European football next season.

Andre Onana is in goal.

The back three is unchanged, with Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro operating from right to left, respectively.

Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui are the wing backs.

Patrick Dorgu is suspended following his red card against Ipswich on Wednesday.

Manuel Ugarte will partner either Bruno Fernandes or Christian Eriksen in central midfield, with the other one joining the attack.

Rasmus Hojlund will lead the line while Josh Zirkzee is the other twin 10.

Alejandro Garnacho drops to the bench, this is probably due to his having picked up a knock in training rather than because of his poor reaction to being subbed on Wednesday.

Joining him on the bench are Hubert Graczyk, 17-year-old ‘keeper Will Murdock, Victor Lindelof, Ayden Heaven, Casemiro and Chido Obi.

Amorim still has multiple injury problems, with Altay Bayindir, Tom Heaton, Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez, Jonny Evans, Toby Collyer, Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount and Amad all unavailable.

Kick off at Old Trafford is at 4.30pm GMT.

United to go all out to land the “best striker in the Premier League” in the summer, fans will be buzzing – report

How Manchester United could do with a prolific striker like Alexander Isak up front. The Swede has 21 goals this season in all competitions.

He is the second top-scorer among all English clubs and third in the Premier League scoring charts. His consistency since arriving in England has been sensational.

Last season, he had 25 goals to his name while in his debut campaign, the Sweden international had 11 goals in all competitions. His trajectory remains on the up since his €70 million move to Newcastle.

Ruben Amorim only has Rasmus Hojlund to call upon with the Dane managing only seven goals this term while struggling to complete even the basics at the moment with his confidence shot to bits.

Isak could be leaving Newcastle

The St James’ Park outfit could be forced to sell Isak if they fail to qualify for the Champions League and multiple outfits are ready to pounce. They are currently sixth in the league standings.

The Red Devils are “desperate” for additions up front with Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness) claiming that the Newcastle striker is of interest to United.

However, it will not be an easy “fight” with the presence of multiple top clubs in the race. Arsenal, Liverpool are also keen while Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are also monitoring proceedings.

The Spanish outlet claims Barcelona are also interested with the 25-year-old “excited” about the possibility of playing at the Camp Nou.

United among the teams interested

However, the Magpies are likely to ask for at least €100 million for their talisman while the report claims Isak will ask for €18 million in wages.

Both of which Barca will find hard to afford, therefore increasing the chances of the other players in the race.

However, given the financial woes at Old Trafford, INEOS might not be in a position to land the “best striker in the Premier League.”

The 20-time English league champions also have Victor Osimhen and Viktor Gyokeres in their sights while Liam Delap is another cost-effective option being monitored.

Ruben Amorim has made his team selection for the Emirates FA Cup fifth-round tie against Fulham.

The Old Trafford encounter kicks off at 16:30 GMT, with a place in the quarter-finals up for grabs.

The Reds are without wing-back Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu, after the red card he picked up in the 3-2 win over Ipswich Town in midweek, with Noussair Mazraoui drafted into the XI in his place.

Diogo Dalot could play on the left, with Mazraoui on the right, but they could easily be on the opposite flanks.

The other change sees Alejandro Garnacho, who was sacrificed in the first half against Ipswich when Dorgu was dismissed, replaced by Christian Eriksen.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes and Eriksen’s positions are interchangeable within the system, so it will be interesting to see who begins the tie in the deeper role, alongside Manuel Ugarte.

William Murdock, who kept goal for the Under-18s in our fabulous 3-2 win over Arsenal in the FA Youth Cup quarter-final on Friday night, gets a maiden senior call-up to sit on the bench. Fellow keeper Hubert Graczyk is also a substitute again, with Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton both out injured.

Only seven players are named as subs, with teenage striker Chido Obi one of them.

THE TEAMS

United: Onana; De Ligt, Maguire, Yoro; Mazraoui, Ugarte, Fernandes (c), Dalot; Zirkzee, Eriksen; Hojlund.

Substitutes: Graczyk, Murdock, Heaven, Lindelof, Casemiro, Garnacho, Obi.

Fulham: Leno; Robinson (c), Bassey, Andersen, Castagne; Lukic, Berge; Iwobi, Andreas, Traore; Muniz.

Substitutes: Benda, Cuenca, Diop, Sessegnon, Reed, Cairney, Smith Rowe, Willian, Jimenez.

Sunday 02 March 2025 14:51

Manchester United earned a hard-fought seventh consecutive WSL win on Sunday, with Leicester City beaten 2-0 at Leigh Sports Village straight after a tiring international break.

There were three changes to the United line-up from Marc Skinner. Melvine Malard, Celin Bizet and Aoife Mannion all came into the side, with Hinata Miyazawa on the bench, and Jayde Riviere and Elisabeth Terland missing out through knocks. Leicester, meanwhile, were unchanged from the side that beat Aston Villa last time out.

The impressive Malard grabbed her opportunity with both hands, at the heart of most of United’s attacking play. She scored the opener before laying on the second before the break for Leah Galton.

Leicester were much improved in the second half, but United were solid defensively and recorded a milestone 10th league clean sheet of the campaign.

Melvine Malard’s first-half opener set the ball rolling.

FIRST HALF

A spell of sustained early United pressure deep in Leicester’s half produced the first attempt of the afternoon when Dominique Janssen fired a right-footed shot from the edge of the box that whistled just wide of the target. The Reds continued to control the tempo, although there was a clear intention from Leicester to try and stretch the pitch with the pace of Shana Chossenotte down their right flank.

Further half-chances came as Janina Leitzig collected a through ball just before Malard reached it, while Ella Toone shot just wide from distance. But there was elegant simplicity about Malard’s opener just shy of 20 minutes in. It was two straight passes through the centre of the pitch from Maya Le Tissier and then Toone, with Malard beating Julie Thibaud for pace to run through on goal. A clever drop of the shoulder wrongfooted Leitzig, opening the door for a classy finish at the near post.

United had vocal penalty appeals waved away midway through the half when a cross from the right struck the outstretched arm of Leicester midfielder Sam Tierney. A couple of important Leicester blocks then kept the Reds at bay as Malard teed up Bizet and then smashed the rebound goalward herself.

A Gabby George free-kick from a promising position towards the end of the half missed the target, but Galton ensured United took a two-goal lead into the break when Malard slid a ball into her path in the box. It was a composed finish from our no.11 who proceeded to rush over to the bench to celebrate the strike with fellow Lego Club members Rachel Williams and Safia Middleton-Patel.

Leah Galton doubled the lead in first-half stoppage time.

SECOND HALF

Despite conceding a second right before the break, Leicester returned from the interval with some fresh vigour and George needed to be alert to block from Chossenotte at the far post. Missy Goodwin later had another sight of goal for the Foxes that she blazed over on the volley an hour in.

Half-time substitute Yuka Momiki, scorer for Japan against the United States in the SheBelieves Cup, was the primary source of Leicester’s improvement and had her own effort well saved by Phallon Tullis-Joyce. With a quarter of the game left, Leicester even fortuitously struck the woodwork when CJ Bott’s mishit cross clipped the top of the crossbar and bounced over. Tierney then had the away section groaning with a miss from a good position closing in at the far post.

Leicester made it much tougher after half-time.

In search of a wider buffer, United were denied when a promising run from Malard down the left saw a cross intercepted just before it reached Bizet, with the follow up agonisingly nudged out of Toone’s path.

Leicester had done an exceptional job at keeping the Reds at arm’s length throughout much of the second half. But that resilience started to wane in the closing stages and, combined with Rachel Williams’s bulldozing introduction late on, saw United engineer a final opening for Miyazawa that flew off target.

Man Utd: Amorim prepares for ‘ruthless’ summer clear-out and tips ‘great guy’ for Tuchel England call

Ruben Amorim says multiple players leaving Manchester United in the summer is “not a difficult situation” as the head coach warned his squad over his “ruthless” attitude.

The Portuguese boss is now well aware of the task on his hands, with his side sitting 14th in the Premier League having struggled to adapt to his style of play.

Patrick Dorgu – who’s already in the Old Trafford pit of despair after his nightmare against Ipswich – arrived in January as his only signing so far, with PSR regulations not allowing big spending owing to the money wasted on sacking Erik ten Hag before hiring Amorim and his staff.

The likely sales of on-loan stars Antony and Marcus Rashford looks set to provide some money to spend on new players in the summer, but further exits are expected in order to increase the coffers and to get rid of some of the dead wood.

When asked about a possible mass departure when the transfer window reopens, Amorim warned his players about his “ruthless” attitude.

“I don’t like to be like that (ruthless) just to show strength,” the Portuguese explained.

“If the team is trying, and I understand that they are trying but they cannot do it, I am not ruthless. But when I feel that it is something which is going to harm the team, then I am quite ruthless.”

Amorim went to on admit that some players already know that they’ll be leaving when the summer transfer window opens.

“Everybody understands that in football sometimes you stay, sometimes you have to move on,” he continued.

“If I know how to explain it, I will do so because I like to be clear. I was a player and like to use that experience – when you are honest with someone, they can take it. In the beginning maybe it is hard but they will understand. I’m quite honest with my players and sometimes they know they have to move on at the end of the season.

“We can talk about that in the end – now there are still a lot of games to play. But that is clear and not a difficult situation.”

Amorim was also asked about Harry Maguire’s possible recall to the England squad ahead of new Three Lions boss making his selection for the World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia next week.

Maguire missed out on Euro 2024 due to a lack of fitness and wasn’t named in Lee Carsley’s last two squads.

Amorim added: “I would be really happy for Harry. I think he deserves it.

“He is a great guy. I think he needs to still improve, because when you are a player you can improve every time. But I think his performances at the moment are quite good. You feel that he is more of a leader now that can help a national team. So I hope he is in the national team in the next games.”

United star’s confidence has been “smashed to smithereens”, Amorim now has a big problem – report

After finishing as Manchester United’s top scorer in his debut season, expectations were that Rasmus Hojlund would enjoy greater success in his sophomore campaign.

But it has been anything but with the Dane managing only two Premier League goals so far while his goal drought has now crossed 17 games.

But it is not only the lack of goals that is hurting the Red Devils with the former Atalanta ace struggling to complete even the basics.

That was perfectly encapsulated in the 61st minute of United’s game against Ipswich Town last Wednesday. Leny Yoro masterfully pulled off a Cruyff turn on the edge of the box, bamboozling the Ipswich defenders, before putting in a low ball towards the United No 9.

Rasmus struggling big time

Inexplicably, the Denmark international decided to leave the ball hoping for a teammate to be behind him. Any confident striker takes a shot on, especially when the ball is perfectly at their feet.

As United legend Rio Ferdinand rightly pointed out, Hojlund seems more preoccupied with backing into opposition defenders instead of trying to use his smarts and pace to outwit his opponent.

While Ruben Amorim has stopped short of criticising the 22-year-old, reports have indicated that he is fed up with the 22-year-old‘s poor displays on the pitch and is open to moving him on in the summer.

The Daily Mail have claimed that there is some sympathy for Hojlund given the fact that he is having to shoulder most of the responsibility on his own with Joshua Zirkzee not a natural No 9.

The Danish star remains humble in training but coaches can clearly see his confidence is at an all-time low.

No confidence at all

“Hojlund is taking criticism from all angles right now and that is partly why the feeling among some internally at United is one of sympathy for a 22-year-old that should not be shouldering the entire goalscoring burden in the strikers’ room at a club the size of Manchester United.

“Club sources speak of his willingness to learn in training and his attitude having never faltered amid his barren run but others talk of a player that has had confidence smashed to smithereens during this miserable campaign.”

While INEOS remain open to the possibility of moving him on in the summer, there is a growing realisation that not many teams will come forward and offer a large sum given the striker’s current form.

So far, most clubs who are interested in his services are eyeing a cut-price deal, which means the Red Devils will incur a huge loss on their £72 million investment.
