Football quiz: Name every losing finalist in the FA Cup this century

There have been 25 FA Cup final winners this century, but what about the teams who finished as runners-up? You’ve got 365 seconds to name them all…

A pretty dull FA Cup weekend will conclude when Nottingham Forest face Ipswich Town on Monday night, with both Premier League clubs vying for the last quarter-final spot and a clash away to Brighton and Hove Albion.

It is up for grabs this season, with Manchester City the only ‘big six’ team left in the competition. Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Brighton and others will all fancy their chances of going all the way.

Let’s be real. We all know City are going to win a completely anti-climatic final 3-0, don’t we?

The Premier League champions have won three FA Cup finals this century and have lost a couple as well. So, how well do you remember the teams who came up short?

How fast can you name every losing FA Cup finalist since 2000? Remember to record your scores on the leaderboard and brag Below The Line.

If you enjoyed that and need more reasons to dodge work, we’ve got plenty more quizzes here. And our friends at Planet Football have even more. We’ll have another new head-f*** for you tomorrow.

In the meantime, make sure you don’t miss these…

Man Utd man ‘equal parts pants and excellent’ as Reds ‘weren’t even bad’

Manchester United were not that bad in defeat to Fulham, while the tiresome debate between Liverpool and Arsenal fans continues.

Mail your thoughts on all subjects to theeditor@football365.com

Looking on the bright Red side
Man Utd weren’t even bad last night. They were decent actually – in parts at least.

No howlers from Onana but some decent stops. The centre-halves all had good shifts even if they still don’t operate smoothly together as a system. (Maybe De Ligt’s best game). Dalot and Mazraoui were good, especially the latter (and ok the former still has no final ball).

Bruno was immense again whatever angry Roy Keane says.

Zirkzee was equal parts pants and excellent which is kinda exactly what you want in that kind of playmaker role (ok you’d prefer nonstop great but overall you take the bad because you might get the good).

Ugarte was a nuisance. Garnacho was lively when he came on but it would be wonderful if he could finish. And Heaven – like, he didn’t do much but he just looks the part.

Less good was Eriksen who played (I think) so I’ll just leave it there. And Obi showed enough (a pulse) to indicate he’s a better option than Hoijlund who I just feel sorry for now.

Look, a striker who can finish his dinner, proper wingbacks (they already miss Dorgu) and a bit of self-belief and they’ll be grand.
Amorim’s got this.

Sharing the blame around for Toon exit
I swear, it’s impossible to draw conclusions about this Newcastle side. They’ve on for three halves, off for two.

As for this cup exit, I know my ire should be directed chiefly at Anthony Gordon, who had been expertly wound up. Every grab at his arm that went unnoticed or unpunished pushed a button, and he snapped. Poor. The otherwise excellent Tino Livramento looked exhausted long before the first ninety was over. In the end, Dat Guy’s winner was his fault, but Eddie Howe erred in not replacing him with Krafth. Lewis Hall’s untimely injury proved catastrophic; with him on the pitch, Trippier would have replaced Livramento and likely finished extra time.

I know all that, but I can’t help being dissatisfied with Anthony Taylor, who let a lot of ugly stuff go when he had a great view of it, and with the offside decision on Schar’s ruled-out winner. I was convinced that the system had misidentified the time of the pass. Such is sport.

This one hurts more than usual because A] Brighton, B] the FA Cup represented such a huge opportunity for a trophy, and C] Gordon’s rush of blood weakened the team that will play against a Liverpool that already seems to have our number in the EFL Cup final. A bad day at the office, indeed.
Chris C, Toon Army DC (My son can’t understand why I can’t bring myself to hate Danny Welbeck, and frankly neither can I)

Liverpool v Arsenal blah blah blah
Tom says that it’s harder for Arsenal to find good bargains
like Liverpool did because of how many people now replicate the Liverpool data-driven approach.

There is some truth to that, when anyone is successful others will copy it. However that doesn’t really make it more difficult for Arsenal to find good players, they are just not very good at doing that. Liverpool replaced an entire midfield for the same price that Arsenal spent on one midfielder, that was one year ago. In the era of everyone stealing the Liverpool model Liverpool still managed to find undervalued bargains.

Brighton do this regularly. Bournemouth seem to have done it as well. In fact teams all around Europe do it. So the idea that Arsenal can’t do what Liverpool did isn’t really true, they can. They just don’t.

Also it’s not luck when you negotiate the massive sale of a player anymore so than it was luck that Arsenal bought Henry for a pez dispenser collection. It’s good business from a club knowing what they are doing, there’s no luck involved. Liverpool, generally speaking, buy well and sell well. Southampton knew they had Liverpool over a barrel and pushed it hard as they could for Van Dijk, that’s not luck it’s good business. When Arsenal spent £70m on Pepe was that bad luck? Was it good luck signing Sol Campbell for free?

Strange outlook on transfers to say any transfer is lucky or unlucky.

Arteta is a good manager. I’m not trying to say he isn’t. What I’m saying is that after almost a decade and almost a billion quid I personally expect more than one cup and finishing second a couple of times.

Side note : I don’t usually read Stewie’s mails because they ramble quite a bit but I read through half of the last one before realising it was his. Stewie is the Donald Trump of the letters page. Absolute nonsense but it did me laugh. Hopefully he’s not as racist, sexist and rapey as Trump.

…Rich, AFC, yeah exactly that mate. There’s all manner of articles and thought pieces saying how lucky Slot was to be gifted this team. That a significant caveat would be there, should LFC get over the line, and Jurgen would deserve some credit. You could probably add to it by saying that Slot has had barely a quarter of Klopp’s injuries from last year (nor had AFCON, or players parents being kidnapped, or numerous red cards be deemed incorrectly awarded), and yet is only 4 points better off than Jurgen was in the opposing fixtures so far. And that Klopp won the league cup and Slot so far has only made the final. There’s a lot there to say the main thing Slot has achieved is keeping things going.

And yes, should you need to pivot this to be all about Arsenal, if Slot was then unable to get any material success after half a decades significant investment in reshaping the team, that would be frowned on, and further retrospective attention would be given to how much credit should be given to his one success in his first year, even if it’s an impressive as achievement as outwitting Frank Lampard.

Ten Hag > Arteta?
‘And yeah, Ten Hag did better to turn his spending into silverware. Whatever else you think of him, he managed to ride a true injury crisis to still win the FA Cup. What’s Arteta’s excuse again?’

You have to mentally ill to think this way. Ten Hag was hanging on to his job for ages and got sacked because he did terribly. If he was doing how Arteta is doing, he would still be manager of Man United. Do you not realize this? Arteta quite clearly is doing a better job and doesn’t have to spend as much money.

What constitutes a Big Club?
Being from a generation where Big Clubs were those whose names instantly conjure images that will last a whole lot longer than short term Big Clubs can possibly dream of, I did like the idea that City are a Big Club.

There can be no doubt whatsoever that prior to being bought and bestowed upon unimaginable wealth, City have been successful over the past decade however you’d be hard pushed to have anyone aged over…14….who think City are a big club. To many they remain a comedy club who have won the lottery (or cheated).

It’s the same with Chelsea. No doubt they used their incomparable (at the time) wealth to completely destabilise football by inflating transfer fees, agents fees and….quite possibly, cheated. Most people of my age (mid-40’s) still think of them as a decent enough club but no more no less.

Big clubs, and I hate to say this, would feature Arsenal before either of the aforementioned, and I’m a Spurs fan saying this.

The fact that Arsenal cheated their way up the divisions only reiterates that cheaters do prosper (might be the best part of 100 years but grudges can be tough to shake 😂).

The worlds biggest clubs are, and will always be: Barcelona, Real – not even Atletico get a look in here, Bayern, Liverpool, Man Utd, Juventus, AC and Inter Milan, Ajax…and…at a push Benfica but that is digging deep into the past. There are plenty of great clubs with illustrious histories but the top table remains as it did 30 years ago.

Sadly football is just a bit ‘meh’ these days…and the sepia tinted glasses of days of yore are very much on – but I do miss them. Even when Spurs where a bit naff, loitering in and around 12th to 14th.

Oh.

Palace Ed sanguine over Mateta
For a few reasons, I have a different perspective on the Jean-Philippe Mateta incident to others. Maybe it’s because I’m a Palace fan, maybe it’s because I’m less prone to outrage than other people.

There is a lot to unpack here so let’s see if we can cover it all. A high ball is played forwards. Liam Roberts realises that Jake Cooper won’t get there before Mateta, and rushes out to clear the ball. However, he misjudges the height of the ball and when he arrives, he has to jump to kick the ball. His follow through connects with Mateta, who is still closing down, on his ear, at high force. A clear red card.

However, where I differ from a lot of commenters is that I’m not going to call Roberts a thug. I don’t think he meant to injure or assault Mateta; if that was his intention then there would have been far more subtle ways to do that, and ways that were far more likely to be effective than the follow through of a high clearance. It should be enough for it to be a horrific accident and punish it on those grounds.

Let’s talk about the punishment. Lots of people, including Keith Hackett for some reason, are calling for a more severe punishment for this incident. Again, I disagree there. A player given a red card for a leg breaker tackle is banned for three games. I don’t actually think what Roberts did was worse than one of those, so a standard three game suspension is appropriate.

There are only two reasons why a more severe punishment should be given: if there are too many examples of the offence or if the perpetrator is a repeat offender. Well, there aren’t loads of goalkeepers attempting to decapitate opponents, and as for Roberts, this was his 129th professional game and just his second red card, so neither main reason for increased sanction applies.

I have some sympathy for Michael Oliver, possibly putting me in a minority of one. The answer to why he reacted how he did is probably that it happened really quickly and then he couldn’t believe what he’d seen. From his position behind Mateta, it looked like contact with the upper body and not immediately like solely a head contact. If that is what he thought, then it makes sense he played advantage.

Then, once it became apparent it was a head injury, his priority was getting medical assistance for Mateta. The chances are the VAR said they would review the incident while Oliver took care of things on the field. As we know, the on field referee has to go through the charade of checking the monitor before going with the VAR’s decision.

It was a very difficult situation to manage and I don’t think it’s fair to assume that the officials would not also be affected by what they saw. The best thing they could do was take a moment to make sure they got the decision right. Brandishing a red card immediately wasn’t going to make the medical staff attending to Mateta work faster, and would probably have inflamed the situation for the other players. Instead, taking the time afforded them by the medical staff to let everything cool down. That prevented anyone else from either team overreacting and getting themselves a red card.

Millwall fans should not have chanted “let him die”. Palace fans should not have chanted it either. I wonder if it brought back memories for Glenn Murray, on pundit duty for the BBC – in Palace’s promotion season he got injured in the playoff semifinal against Brighton, and was subjected to the same chant from the classy Albion fans who had sung his name gleefully the season before. Millwall are being investigated by the FA for their fans’ homophobia towards Ben Chilwell. What were we saying about repeat offenders?

Thankfully, Mateta’s injury does not seem to be as serious as it first appeared. If he needs to miss the next game, Palace have Ipswich Town, a fixture that they should have enough quality to win without him provided they match that with enough application.

Man Utd transfer: Rooney picks three reasons for Amorim, Ratcliffe to sanction return of ‘fantastic’ PL star

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has revealed his “completely honest” verdict on the Premier League giants re-signing Danny Welbeck from Brighton.

FA Cup holders Man Utd exited the competition on Sunday afternoon as they were beaten on penalties by Premier League rivals Fulham.

This fresh disappointment adds to what’s already been a dire season for the Red Devils, who are 14th in our calender year Premier League table.

Head coach Ruben Amorim is the sixth-favourite to be the next Premier League manager sacked and one of his many issues is Man Utd’s lack of threat in attack.

Strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have underperformed this season, so Man Utd are expected to sign a new striker during this summer’s transfer window.

It remains to be seen who Man Utd will try to sign, but they have been encouraged to give Welbeck a second chance at Old Trafford.

Speaking last month, United legend Gary Neville explained why Welbeck was “let go too quickly” by the Premier League giants.

“He was let go too quickly at United,” Neville said on Sky Sports.

“If you think about [former United boss] Louis van Gaal, obviously his style of play is very precise.

“Danny wasn’t precise in his game back then. So he just let him go, just didn’t fancy him at all.

“But he’s actually perfect for how Man Utd should play: threatening space in behind, playing off front players… And this idea he’s not good enough for Manchester United is absolutely rubbish.

“He’s good enough to be in a pool of three or four strikers at Manchester United, just like, for instance, Liverpool have three, four, five forward players across that front line. They’re all of differing abilities and different talents. But they all contribute at a certain point in the season.”

The 34-year-old has been a consistent operator for Brighton since joining the Premier League side from Watford in 2020, but he has reached a new level this season.

The veteran forward has significantly increased his goalscoring numbers as he’s scored eight goals in his 25 appearances in all competitions this term. He has also contributed four assists.

Welbeck scored the winning goal as Brighton beat Newcastle United to advance in the FA Cup and during the BBC’s coverage of this match, Rooney gave three reasons why Man Utd should re-sign the former England international.

“Danny, he’s great to play alongside and if I’m being completely honest, I’d would probably still like to see him here playing for Manchester United,” Rooney said.

“He scored goals throughout his career, had injuries in early part of his career, but seems to have got over them and he’s having a fantastic season.”

Video: United Women make it seven league wins in a row with convincing 2-0 victory over Leicester

Manchester United Women won their seventh league game on the trot to close the gap on leaders Chelsea at the top of the Women’s Super League.

They beat Leicester City 2-0 at the Leigh Sports Village.

The first chance of the afternoon came when Dominique Janssen received the ball from Leah Galton and cut inside before firing a long range effort high and wide.

After 13 minutes, United had another pop at goal as the ball broke to Ella Toone who tried the spectacular but her effort flew into the stand behind without truly threatening the Foxes’ goal.

On 19 minutes, Marc Skinner’s side had their breakthrough as they sliced through the visitors’ defence. A ball was played from the back to Ella Toone, who threaded a beautiful pass through to Melvine Malard who took care of the rest.

The French striker ran onto the ball and intelligently dummied her shot to take the keeper out of the equation, before slotting home to give her side a well-deserved lead.

United pressed on looking for their second with efforts from Toone and Gabby George not finding the target.

On the stroke of half-time they did manage to double their lead.

A great ball by Toone picked out Malard, who spun and played a lovely through ball to Galton. She finished first time to put the Red Devils into a commanding position at half-time.

Leicester took a bit more of the initiative to try to score in the second half but had to wait until the 64th minute to force a save from Phallon Tullis-Joyce.

Nicole Momiki was played in and she released a left-footed shot from the centre of the box but it was well-saved by United’s American keeper.

Leicester controlled the majority of the chances as United were content to hold onto their lead as the second half wore on.

In the 81st minute, Nelly Las had a left footed shot from the right side of the box that was once again dealt with comfortably by Tullis-Joyce who has remarkably only conceded six goals in the league all season.

The home side did have a couple of chances in added on time to add to their lead as Hinata Miyazawa had a right footed shot from outside the box that just missed the top right corner, that was assisted by Ella Toone.

Toone was involved again shortly after as she had another effort from outside the box that was well blocked by the visitors’ defence.

United held on to record a seventh straight league victory and with Chelsea drawing 2-2 with Brighton and Hove Albion, they are now five points behind the leaders.

Crucially, they have five more points than Manchester City, who are in fourth, as they remain in second and aim to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in their history.

The Women will be in action again this Saturday afternoon when they face Sunderland in the quarter finals of the FA Cup.

Man Utd: Lineker echoes INEOS in fingering Ferguson amid Klopp comparison

Gary Lineker has compared the Liverpool team left by Jurgen Klopp with the Manchester United squad left by Sir Alex Ferguson and concluded that the latter is at least partly responsible for what has come since.

Ferguson bowed out in 2013 with the Premier League title but left behind a squad that looked tired around the edges, with Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra, Michael Carrick and Robin van Persie all coming towards the end of their careers, and Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs both on their last legs.

Lineker was speaking as Manchester United were beaten in the FA Cup by Fulham, a defeat that was rather more mundane than magic.

INEOS have reportedly ‘blamed’ the club legend for the club’s decline. According to the Mirror last week: ‘Some influential movers and shakers at Old Trafford even feel that Ferguson is to blame for the club’s decline for failing to embrace developments in coaching and scouting.’

It seems like Lineker at least in part agrees, saying on the BBC: “If you look at Liverpool now, they’ve got a new manager in Arne Slot, and it’s testament to how Jürgen Klopp left the club in a really good state. So the structure is really good.

“That probably wasn’t the case at the end of Sir Alex Ferguson’s [time at Old Trafford]. I know they won the league that season, but it wasn’t their best side, and a lot of their great players were coming to the end of their careers. I think from there they had problems. The academy wasn’t delivering the players that they were before.”

Lineker was sitting alongside Wayne Rooney – who called Ruben Amorim ‘naive’ for talking about the Premier League title – and he was part of that squad left by Ferguson in 2013.

He said: “I think everyone’s a little bit on edge. Over the last 10 years there’s been a slow decline at the football club and they just need to try and get some consistency in what they’re doing, whether that’s with the manager, with the process, recruitment and how they want to try and move forward. If they get that right then they will start to get better.

“Manchester United have spent a lot of money over the last 10 years but the structure hasn’t been there. They’re buying players as individuals and it looks like there hasn’t been a long-term plan to have this way of playing, the style, the identity.

“Then we see a new manager come in who wants his own way of playing, like we’re seeing now. Every time they’re starting to move forward a little bit, it gets ripped up again.

“You need to be in a stable position to bring the best players in. If I’m a player playing in a different country or a different club, Man United come to me, and I’m looking thinking, ‘you know, I’m not sure’. The top players want Champions League football. And unfortunately, that’s not where the club is.”

Agent of United Women’s star “under huge psychological pressure” makes shocking accusation against the club

The agent of Manchester United forward Geyse has accused the club of trying to loan her out to clubs in the United States while she attended her brother’s funeral.

Geyse was recently given compassionate leave by United after the death of her brother Geovane Ferreira and missed four matches across January and February.

The Brazilian has so far this season made 11 appearances across all competitions, nine of which have come in the WSL, with six of those being starts.

Since she returned to the club, Geyse has found playing time hard to come by. She was brought in in the 84th minute of United’s 2-0 win over Leicester City on Saturday afternoon.

After the clash, Geyse posted a cryptic message on Instagram, explaining her feelings of loneliness and being unhappy amidst her struggles.

The 26-year-old wrote, “Staying in a place where we don’t feel happy is an agonising and lonely feeling. Every day seems heavier, and the simple fact of being there becomes a burden.”

“The environment, which should be welcoming, becomes a field of discomfort, where inner peace is difficult to find. When we are not in tune with what surrounds us, the world around us loses its colour and energy.”

“Sometimes, the desire for change arises as an urgent need, but the fear of the unknown or insecurity about the future can paralyse us. However, it is essential to remember that we deserve to be in places and situtions that bring us happiness and fulfilment. That’s the only way we can grow.”

— Kathryn Batte (@KathrynBatte) March 2, 2025

Now, The Telegraph report that United have been accused of attempting to loan Geyse out while she was attending her brother’s funeral.

Her agent, Luis Filipe Silva, told the newspaper, “As you know, her brother passed away, she is going through a very difficult time, it is a very difficult time psychologically and at Man United she is not having the best time. She needs to regain the joy of playing football and doesn’t have it for several reasons.”

“The club has clearly shown that it does not count on Geyse, Man United tried to loan Geyse to a club in the USA, but the player has the right to decide about her future and the club she will play for.”

“It was clear that the club and the coach don’t count on her – the pressure of being in a place where you feel you are not wanted is tremendous. It is a huge psychological pressure. We are sad and want the best for Geyse.”

Silva added about Geyse’s relationship with United boss Marc Skinner, “The coach knows what we think. There is no relationship whatsoever. Professional only. Man United made a huge effort to sign Geyse from Barcelona, her quality is recognised by everyone.”

“The best solution for all parties is to leave and I repeat, Man United was the first to try to loan the player when she was at her brother’s funeral.”

“We are aware of Geyse’s value and at peace, because even with few opportunities, it is with pride that we know that the best coaches in the world want Geyse, and they are coaches elected as the best in the world and who have already won everything, they are top coaches and clubs, we are happy that they can clearly see Geyse’s talent and how to enhance it.”

“Geyse wants to return to the Brazilian national team and at the moment it is impossible. But if the best coaches in the world want Geyse at this terrible time, we are honoured.”

“At the moment the best solution is for Geyse to be loaned, it is good for all parties. Now we hope that the club will show common sense and understand Geyse’s situation and not make negotiations difficult, since they were the ones who offered the player behind our backs.”

“Geyse needs to be happy again and have peace.”

United signed Geyse in the summer of 2023 from Barcelona for a club-record fee.

There is still a chance that she leaves United in the next few weeks, with the transfer window in the US open until March 24.

“It’s our tradition…”: Amorim full of praise for debutant as youngsters offer ray of hope after FA Cup exit

Manchester United’s defence of the FA Cup ended in the fifth round as they lost 3-4 to Fulham via a penalty shootout on Sunday after the game had finished 1-1 at the end of regulation time.

It was Calvin Bassey who handed the visitors the lead at the stroke of half-time but the hosts equalised in the second-half through Bruno Fernandes.

After 120 minutes, the game went to the lottery of a shootout and unfortunately, Victor Lindelof and Joshua Zirkzee missed from the spot to hand the Cottagers entry into the quarterfinals.

It was yet another disappointing outing for Rasmus Hojlund, whose goalless drought has now crossed 18 games and with his confidence shattered, Ruben Amorim must think about taking him out of the firing line.

Chido’s brilliant impact off the bench

Chido Obi’s impressive cameo, which had pundits purring, must have given the head coach food for thought ahead of the all-important Europa League game against Real Sociedad.

After the game, the Portuguese told MUTV, “I think Chido did really well today. Of course, he was a little bit naïve in some moments, but you felt that, inside the box, he wants the ball – something the strikers have and he has.”

It was the ex-Arsenal starlet’s first appearance at Old Trafford while another Arsenal youth product, Ayden Heaven came on for his club debut in added time following Harry Maguire’s injury.

The 18-year-old was impressive under pressure and hardly put a foot wrong. Given Maguire’s injury and Leny Yoro’s early substitution, Heaven has the chance to earn more minutes in the coming weeks.

Heaven impressed on his debut

The brilliant young duo were reminders of the talents Carrington possesses and given the club’s financial and injury problems, solutions can always be found in-house.

“Ayden was really relaxed during the game so I’m quite happy for them but it’s a tough first [home] game for them.

“They are players with talent and then, when you have this moment with some injuries, they have to be ready. It’s our tradition to put players in to play, especially in this moment.

“We have to focus on everything, the future is right there and the young kids can feel the club and can change things sometimes for us, without buying players.”

United told to bring back 34-yo striker they sold for peanuts amid Hojlund’s disastrous form

Manchester United were left ruing missed chances as Fulham ended their FA Cup journey with a penalty shootout win.

Ruben Amorim yet again trusted Ruben Amorim to spearhead the Red Devils attack and, yet again, the Danish forward delivered a frustrating performance, leading to question marks over his place in the United head coach’s plans.

The 22-year-old has endured a disastrous season, managing just two Premier League goals in 22 appearances.

Joshua Zirkzee, meanwhile, has appeared more composed with the ball at his feet but his finishing has also left a lot to be desired.

Ahead of the Mancunians clash with Fulham, Wayne Rooney talked about Danny Welbeck’s exploits at Brighton and Hove Albion and insisted that he would like to see his former teammate at United once again.

“Danny, he’s great to play alongside and if I’m being completely honest, I would probably still like to see him here playing for Manchester United,” said Rooney during BBC Match of the Day.

“I’d probably still like to see Danny Welbeck here, playing for Manchester United!”

Do you agree with Wayne Rooney? 🤔#BBCFootball #FACup pic.twitter.com/8hH7JqKWzU

— Match of the Day (@BBCMOTD) March 2, 2025

Welbeck left United for Arsenal under Louis van Gaal in a deal worth around £16 million in 2014.

The United academy product is enjoying a prolific stint at Brighton, having scored eight goals in all competitions this season despite limited minutes.

Most recently the 34-year-old made headlines with his 114th minute winner against Newcastle United in the FA Cup.

Erik ten Hag reportedly tried to sign the Englishman over the summer of 2024 so Rooney’s suggestion is far from outlandish.

The disappointing FA Cup encounter on Sunday did provide some encouragement to the United faithful going forward as Chido Obi delivered a promising cameo after replacing Hojlund early in the second half.

Having said that, Obi is still very young striker and Ineos would be wise to invest in a more experienced number nine to ease Amorim’s goalscoring woes.

Gutted United star releases 12-word statement apologising for his role in the club’s FA Cup exit

Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee has released a statement, apologising to the fans for missing the decisive penalty as Fulham progressed to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup with a 4-3 shootout victory.

United were knocked out of the competition on Sunday at Old Trafford, bringing an end to their defence of the trophy, having won it last season.

Calvin Bassey nodded Fulham ahead just before the break, taking full advantage of some pitiful set-piece defending from the hosts.

Bruno Fernandes restored parity in the second half with an exquisite finish from 16 yards out, to ensure the game edged into extra time and then penalties.

The Cottagers emerged out on top after Victor Lindelof and Zirkzee were thwarted from the spot-kick by Bernd Leno.

After the final whistle, Zirkzee was reduced to tears as he pulled his shirt over his face.

A number of Fulham players were also spotted comforting him.

“Thanks for the incredible support.”

His message was accompanied by a red love heart emoji.

Zirkzee was named in the starting XI and played the entire match in one of the number 10 roles, just behind the striker.

There were some positives about his performance including some brilliant link-up play, holding up of the ball and passing but he didn’t pose a real threat to the Fulham defence.

In his post-match interview with BBC, Amorim insisted that Zirkzee is improving in a United shirt. Meanwhile, the Red Devils are back in action on Thursday when they face Real Sociedad in the round of 16 of the Europa League at San Sebastian.

United loanee produces yet another brilliant performance to crush Real Madrid

Manchester United loanee Antony has shared his delight after Real Betis secured a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory against Real Madrid in La Liga on Saturday.

The Brazilian winger played the full 90 minutes after successfully appealing the red card he received during last weekend’s clash against Getafe.

Initially shown a straight red for a challenge on Juan Iglesias, replays later suggested that Antony had attempted to minimize contact, leading to the club’s successful appeal.

Antony has made a strong start to life in Spain.

Since arriving in the January transfer window, he has contributed two goals and two assists in five league matches under Manuel Pellegrini.

The Andalusian side found themselves trailing early after Brahim Diaz opened the scoring for Madrid in the 10th minute.

However, goals from Johnny Cardoso and former Los Blancos midfielder Isco turned the game around, handing Betis a crucial victory in front of over 50,000 fans at the Benito Villamarín Stadium.

Following the game, Antony took to Instagram to share Betis’ full-time graphic and express his appreciation for the club’s supporters.

Betis’ victory dents Madrid’s title charge while boosting their push for European qualification.

With Antony growing in confidence and form, the remainder of the season could be exciting for the Brazilian and his temporary club.

It is to be seen if the Brazilian winger is part of Amorim’s plans come the summer.

His technical prowess, and selflessness could benefit United in certain situations when they need to keep hold of the ball. The final call will be made after the end of the season, taking the entire squad into consideration.
