“He’s shot … it is sad”: Gary Neville says fans are relieved when United star is not on the pitch

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has claimed that striker Rasmus Hojlund’s confidence is at rock bottom.

The match last Sunday against Fulham was the 18th consecutive game he has not scored in for the club.

His last goals came all the way back in December when he scored a brace against Viktoria Plzen in the Czech Republic.

The Dane was also worryingly shown up by his 17 year old compatriot Chido Obi at the weekend.

Obi replaced Hojlund during the second half against the Cottagers and had 3 big chances in 52 minutes. This contrasted starkly to United’s number nine, who has had 3 big chances in 22 Premier League matches this season.

Speaking on the Overlap US Neville expressed sympathy for Hojlund and his recent plight.

He claimed, “Hojlund had a really difficult game, it was a worry. That was my biggest takeaway from the game, there’s a lad that now hasn’t scored in 18 games.”

The former defender did admit that he thinks Hojlund has talent and does have physicality but admitted that something is severely wrong with him.

“He’s shot at the moment and he’s really struggling. It’s sad. You could see when he was subbed off, there was almost a relief in the stadium because the fans knew he had to come off.”

The 50 year old pundit did sympathise with him however by stating that he hardly has an inspiring supporting cast alongside him.

Neville lambasted United’s service to him by claiming Joshua Zirkzee and Christian Eriksen were unable to provide for him and the club’s lack of attacking fullbacks also hurt their chances of creating chances for the 22 year old striker.

He also claimed it was a “sad” experience being at Old Trafford and that every team who comes as a visitor seems to have more of a plan and an understanding of how they want to play.

“I went as a fan and it was actually sad being in the stadium. It was really sad because the fans are despondent, they’re down in the dumps.”

Ethan Wheatley has signed a new contract with Manchester United.

The young striker has agreed a fresh deal to run until 2028, with the option of a further year.

Wheatley, who officially joined United at the age of nine, having been part of the pre-Academy, has already featured four times for the first team.

Young Red Ethan Wheatley signs the contract.

The forward played a key part in United’s successful Academy team in 2023/24, including scoring against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, in the national final, and twice in the Premier League cup final against Manchester City, helping the Under-18s to secure three trophies.

During the first half of this season, at the age of 18, he averaged a goal every 117 minutes in Premier League 2 before joining League Two promotion-chasers Walsall on loan in January.

The centre-forward famously became the 250th youth-side graduate to represent our first team, when making his senior debut, and has played for England Under-17s, Under-18s and Under-19s.

Congratulations to Ethan from everybody at United.

Ten Hag’s return to management brutally torpedoed by former nemesis – report

Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has reportedly been denied an entry back into football management by his old nemesis Jurgen Klopp.

The Dutchman was manager at Old Trafford from 2022 until October 2024 when he was sacked after the club’s shoddy start to the season.

He did win the Carabao Cup and FA Cup during his time at United but is also seen as responsible for filling the squad with numerous expensive players who are deemed not good enough to take the club forward.

Since being sacked, he has been linked with different clubs including Borussia Dortmund and Feyenoord.

Ten Hag also stated in a recent interview that he has no plans to return to football management until the summer and maybe his future might lie away from management entirely.

Nonetheless, it was reported earlier in the week that Red Bull Leipzig hold an interest in appointing Ten Hag in the summer.

There seems to a large obstacle to this however, as Sky Germany (via Football Transfers) report that “Jurgen Klopp has rejected Erik ten Hag as a coaching option for RB Leipzig.”

The former Liverpool coach has been the club’s head of global soccer since the start of the year and has already had a big say on their future path.

Klopp is already said to “wield incredible influence” at the club and according to journalist Florian Plettenberg, the German does not see Ten Hag as a good fit at Leipzig.

Commenting on the situation the journalist asserted, “he supports the plan to persist with Marco Rose until the summer. He has a clear profile in mind for Leipzig. Sebastian Hoeness is the preferred option for Klopp and everyone involved, but whether he would be interested we don’t know yet.”

“Klopp has also decided that the profile of Ten Hag does not suit Leipzig.”

Ten Hag faced Klopp five times during his spell in England, winning two, drawing two and losing the other.

Man United transfers: Romano makes ‘100%’ claim as Red Devils battle Spurs for Angel Gomes

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Manchester United and Tottenham target Angel Gomes is set to leave this summer.

The Lille midfielder’s contract expires this summer, and the 24-year-old is wanted by several Premier League sides, who will be queuing up to submit a contract offer.

Having originally left United in 2020 a return to Old Trafford is on the cards for Gomes, though there is also interest from West Ham, Aston Villa, as well as Spurs.

According to Romano, writing for GIVEMESPORT, the midfielder will be ‘100%’ leaving this summer, placing multiple clubs on high alert.

He said: “Yes, Premier League is a possibility for Angel Gomes while also clubs in the Bundesliga asked for information to his new agents. He will 100% leave Lille.”

He made just 10 appearances for the Red Devils before leaving in 2020 and, since then, he’s notched 134 games for the French side, scoring 10 times and assisting on 19 occasions.

Lee Carsley awarded him his senior England debut earlier this season, with Gomes playing both home and away games against Ireland and Finland before the turn of the year.

Where would be the best move for Gomes?

With multiple clubs on the table, Gomes has a significant decision to make and has many factors to consider. Take United, for example, they do not possess a player like Gomes who can take the ball and beat the press from deeper positions and he could well form a strong partnership with Manuel Ugarte.

However, Ruben Amorim’s inflexible system may well dissuade him from joining as he wouldn’t have the same freedom as he has had at Lille or from what we saw in his impressive England performances.

They are also a team in flux currently languishing at the wrong end of the table and he will be in no hurry to join his former club, who are also keen on another Lille-free agent in Jonathan David.

Aston Villa could be the most attractive option for a midfielder given they are likely to achieve European qualification in some form after impressing in the Champions League this term.

But with Unai Emery already having the likes of Youri Tielemans, Boubacar Kamara, Ross Barkley, Amadou Onana and John McGinn to call upon, game time may be hard to come by.

Tottenham or West Ham could offer him the best chance of becoming a regular starter given that neither possesses a player like him in midfield and both would benefit from a player who is calmer on the ball. Previous reports also claimed that he would favour a move to the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.

Rodrigo Bentacur and Yves Bissouma could provide a strong partner for him while he could play alongside either Edson Alvarez, James Ward-Prowse or Guido Rodriguez at West Ham, especially with Tomas Soucek likely to depart.

The stars are aligning for United as epic victory seems almost inevitable in Spain

Manchester United travel to San Sebastian today to face Real Sociedad in what could be a defining moment in their season.

After falling to Fulham in the FA Cup last Sunday and their poor league form, United suddenly have all their eggs in the Europa League basket.

They have played Real Sociedad six times in their history with the Spaniards only winning once, a 0-1 victory at Old Trafford in 2022.

The Red Devils have won their last two trips to the Basque city 4-0 in 2021 and 1-0 in 2022.

Here are three storylines to sink your teeth into.

Real Sociedad’s poor record against English sides

The Spaniards are a tough team to face in the last 16 of the Europa League but they do not have the most inspiring record against English sides.

The BBC report that “Real Sociedad have never beaten an English side on home soil in Europe, drawing one and losing three.”

They have also failed to score in each of the last three matches of this kind, which have all been against Manchester United.

They also lost 1-3 at home against Liverpool in the 1975/76 UEFA Cup and were thrashed 6-0 at Anfield in the corresponding fixture.

United fans will desperately be hoping history repeats itself this evening.

The Red Devils’ recent joy in Spain

Historically, Spanish sides have been a tough nut to crack for United in Europe, as they have only won 21 out of 70 matches against them.

Nonetheless, this has not really been the case recently, especially away from home.

The BBC also report that “Man Utd have lost just one of their last eight away games against Spanish opposition in Europe, winning five and drawing two.”

They beat Villarreal 2-0 away from home in 2021 and drew with FC Barcelona 2-2 before beating Real Betis 1-0 in the 2022/2023 Europa League.

Their last defeat did come in their most recent match in Spain, when they were thrashed 3-0 by Sevilla as they meekly exited the Europa League quarter-final in 2023.

There should be goals

While United have suffered a paucity of goals in the Premier League, they have been relatively free-flowing in the Europa League.

Real Sociedad have scored in all ten of their European games this season and United have also found the back of the net in all eight of their league matches.

“Man Utd are averaging 18.8 shots per game in the UEFA Europa League this season, the most of any side still in the competition and their best ratio in a European season on record (since 2003-04).”

They also boast the highest possession percentages of 61.2% in the competition.

Man Utd: Ruben Amorim blamed for Mainoo and Rashford as six blunders laid at his door

There’s a whole lot of blame to go around at Old Trafford. Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos are now bearing the brunt with the Glazers slinking craftily into the background, but the players have been damned individually and collectively for not being fit for purpose and even Sir Alex Ferguson has been catching strays after leaving David Moyes with a title-winning squad to work with over a decade ago. The b*stard.

The widely accepted view is that none of this is Ruben Amorim’s fault. And to be absolutely clear, most of it definitely isn’t. But we can’t get our heads around a situation where a head coach can shirk the blame no matter how bad his team is, so we’re pointing fingers in his direction.

Here are six mistakes we’re laying solely at Amorim’s door..

Joining Manchester United
“My job is so, so hard here,” Amorim said after defeat to Tottenham in El Sh*tico last month, suggesting – not for the first time – that he hadn’t realised the magnitude of the United mess when he took on the job. His predicament has been met with sympathy for the most part, with any pushback from those suggesting he could have stayed in the far sunnier climes of Lisbon shot down with references to Omar Berrada’s ‘now or never’ ultimatum.

He really should have opted for ‘never’. Amorim said he “only wanted one” amid suggestions he could have waited for the Manchester City job or literally anything else, attracted no doubt to the acclaim that will be showered upon him if he’s able to wake a giant he thought was sleeping but now realises is comatose.

He’s now apparently realised his ‘mistake’ in what we are imagining are teary, drunken chats with friends about his crap players, despotic superiors and the depressing Manchester weather, presumably aware that if (when) this all blows up in his face, his CV will feature one big success and one spectacular failure. Anyone thinking this won’t tarnish his reputation is barking up the wrong tree.

Antony
We don’t think anyone expected Antony’s Real Betis loan to go quite as well. Arguably the biggest flop in Manchester United history has three goals, two assists and three MOTM displays in seven appearances which include a win over Real Madrid.

As Antony’s agent says, it’s the sort of form (as with Marcus Rashford at Aston Villa, Scott McTominay at Napoli etc etc.) that “leads us to wonder if the problem really lies with the players”. Ooofff, ouch.

Junior Pedroso was hitting back at Amorim after the head coach’s claim that it was the Premier League’s “physicality” that the Brazilian struggled with when asked why he thinks Antony has got off to such a flying start in La Liga.

We don’t necessarily disagree with Amorim, but – like Pedroso – do wonder whether he really gave Antony the same opportunity as every United player to impress in the “new beginnings” he promised when he arrived, or whether he failed to separate the footballer from the figure of ridicule the 25-year-old had become under Erik ten Hag.

“Of the 15 games in which Amorim managed Manchester United, he only used Antony in nine, with a total of 252 minutes played,” Pedroso said. “This represents only 18.6% of the total possible minutes (1,350 minutes). How can you judge an athlete without a minimum sequence to prove his worth?”

The man’s got a point. Was that enough football to prove physicality was the problem over the way he was used by Ten Hag? Probably not.

Marcus Rashford
While very much welcomed by us and other click-hungry media outlets, we can’t imagine Amorim’s claim that he would rather field his 63-year-old goalkeeping coach than Rashford or anyone else who “doesn’t give the maximum every day” went down too well with the directors looking to farm him out in January.

But he went to Villa, where his supposed lack of training effort doesn’t appear to be an issue despite him playing under a famously tough task master in Unai Emery, who is currently rubbing his hands together along with the Villa chiefs at the prospect of signing Rashford permanently for £40m in the summer.

Amorim was widely praised for how he dealt with Rashford: leaving him out of the Manchester derby over a lack of effort; not playing him again after Rashford revealed he was ready for a “new challenge”. He was Letting The Players Know Who’s Boss, it was A Sign Of His Strength Of Character and all that other authoritarian guff that frankly feels pretty archaic and certainly did Erik ten Hag no favours after he sent Cristiano Ronaldo and then Jadon Sancho packing.

In a happy-clappy New World, maybe soft truths are better than hard ones and arms around shoulders are more effective than slapped wrists, because keeping your best players at the football club – even when the alternative feels easier – is almost always advisable.

False nine Kobbie Mainoo
In less than three months, Amorim went from using a 6ft 2in muscle-bound goal-machine in Viktor Gyokeres as his No.9 to a diminutive box-to-box midfielder in Kobbie Mainoo, because “sometimes the team creates situations by using the right characteristics”.

“It’s not against Rasmus [Hojlund] or Josh [Zirkzee],” Amorim added ahead of the inevitable defeat to Crystal Palace, but it definitely was, and has almost certainly played a part in what might be the lowest confidence ebb we’ve ever seen in a footballer (Hojlund).

It’s also not helped a narrative – which came into sharp focus courtesy of interest from Chelsea in January – that Amorim either doesn’t know how to get the best out of Mainoo, or can’t. You would need less than a hand to count the half-decent performances of the academy graduate since the new boss arrived at the club.

READ MORE: Man Utd need £150m far more than they need Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho

Christian Eriksen and Casemiro
Remember this? Christian Eriksen and Casemiro against arguably the most dynamic and in-form Premier League midfield at the time in Sandro Tonali, Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes. Inexcusable.

3-4-3
He made a rod for his own back by insisting he would stick rigidly to his system and philosophy no matter what when he arrived at the club. The ‘what’ currently looks like avoiding relegation from the Premier League, which is apparently success enough for Amorim to plough on with a failing formation that this group of players are either incapable of playing in or he is incapable of coaching them to play. Neither reality reflects well on a supposedly elite coach.

Because if Amorim is the best and most talented person at Manchester United right now then surely it would make more sense for him to change to suit the players rather than the other way around? Why not put his own ability to the test rather than dooming his players to fail?

Stubbornly sticking to a philosophy isn’t an indication of Amorim being some sort of misunderstood tactical genius. World-class coaches adapt their styles based on internal and external factors. Manchester City’s treble-winning team bears very little resemblance to the Barcelona side that achieved the same feat in 2009, with only the underlying principles of possession and pressure remaining after a series of tweaks over the years from Guardiola led to two sides that are worlds apart in physicality, structure and in the methods they use to attack and defend.

If Amorim expects to use the very same tactics he used at Sporting to lead Manchester United to glory then the best-case scenario is that glory is ten years down the line.

Amorim to make three big changes vs Real Sociedad, United’s whole season rests on this game – prediction

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has an even thinner squad than ever going into this evening’s big match against Real Sociedad in San Sebastian.

United’s whole season depends on this tie, as defeat will leave them with nothing to play for other than avoiding relegation.

By contrast, getting into the quarter finals would bring in extra revenue and obviously bring the Red Devils one step closer to winning the whole competition, which would guarantee them Champions League football in 2025/26 and thus a much bigger transfer budget this summer.

Harry Maguire and Manuel Ugarte have not travelled with the squad having picked up knocks and Chido Obi is ineligible because he was not registered to play in the tournament and does not qualify to be on United’s “B” list.

On the plus side, Patrick Dorgu can play as his three match ban only applies to domestic competition.

Another plus is the return of Toby Collyer after injury.

Only 18 players have travelled to Spain so once again, Amorim will not have a full complement of substitutes. Three of the 18 are goalkeepers.

Defence

In the continuing absence of Altay Bayindir, Andre Onana will start in goal.

The back three will probably be Noussair Mazraoui, Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro, although Victor Lindelof and Ayden Heaven, who looked impressive in his debut at the weekend, are also options.

Dorgu will play left wing back and Diogo Dalot right.

Midfield and Attack

With Ugarte, Kobbie Mainoo and Mason Mount injured, Bruno Fernandes will probably continue in midfield. We think he might partner Casemiro, whose experience against Spanish teams might tip the balance in his favour.

Collyer and Christian Eriksen are the only other options.

Up front, it simply has to be Rasmus Hojlund, Josh Zirkzee and Alejandro Garnacho as there are no other options in the squad.

The bench will therefore probably comprise the two backup keepers, Dermot Mee and Elyh Harrison, Lindelof, Heaven, Harry Amass, Eriksen and Collyer.

Here then is our predicted XI for this evening’s 5.45pm kick-off:

Back to the future: Amorim to overlook FA Cup villain in favour of commanding wonderkid vs Real Sociedad – opinion

One complaint that can be pointed towards Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim is the fact that he has failed to trust in youth as much as fans would have liked since his arrival.

He has already given his reasoning behind that but it does not sound too convincing given the injury woes at the club and the sheer underperformance of certain players.

That the Portuguese is better served playing Chido Obi over Rasmus Hojlund seems a no-brainer at the moment and while that change cannot be made for Thursday‘s Europa League clash against Real Sociedad, Amorim can start with a key change at the back in the first leg.

His decision to bring on Victor Lindelof against Fulham proved to be a disaster with the Swede looking shaky on and off the ball while he missed the penalty that handed the tie to the Cottagers.

Lindelof does not deserve game time

Amorim’s former teammate has been struggling for years now and yet, inexplicably he continues to remain at Old Trafford outlasting so many players who should have been kept instead.

The club have already decided not to offer the Sweden international a new contract which means he will leave once the season concludes. And there is no reason for Amorim to place his trust in a player who will not be at the club beyond the summer.

It is time he looks to the future and he already has a readymade replacement in Ayden Heaven, who arrived at the club in January alongside Patrick Dorgu.

That Arsenal tried their level best in order to thwart United should tell us all about how highly-rated the 18-year-old is and he showed exactly what he is made up of when he was handed his debut in extra time by Amorim.

Heaven is the future

In 30 minutes, he made three clearances, while he also won all his aerial duels, an aspect of the game Lindelof always has struggled with.

He completed all his passes and was 100% successful with his long passing as well and most importantly, he did not look daunted by the atmosphere (all stats via sofascore).

Heaven relished the physical battle at the back, something which is not Lindelof’s strongest suit and given he is left-footed, he is perfectly suited to replacing Leny Yoro, who is likely to start in Lisandro Martinez’s absence.

Amorim is unlikely to start with Heaven and will instead likely play his experienced defenders like Matthijs de Ligt, Yoro and Noussair Mazraoui.

But he must look to the England U19 international ahead of Lindelof, who is simply not good enough anymore for a club of United’s stature. High time Amorim looks to the future instead of relying on the past.

United wonderkid’s demands will prove too costly for PL rivals, INEOS will breathe a sigh of relief – report

Manchester United’s PSR situation meant INEOS took the bold call to place two of their brightest wonderkids — Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo up for sale during the January window.

Not too long ago, both were considered untouchable but following their entry into the transfer list, there was interest from Chelsea in both players.

In the Englishman’s case, his wage demands were considered excessive by the co-owners with the latest reports claiming his camp was asking for £180,000 per week plus bonuses.

While historically, United would not fret over such demands, the new financial reality is such that INEOS can ill-afford further wrong decisions and they are desperately trying to trim the wage bill.

Mainoo’s demands

They have already moved on high earners like Marcus Rashford and Antony during the winter window while they are also looking at selling the likes of Casemiro, Mason Mount next summer.

Interestingly, as revealed by Givemesport, even the Blues would struggle to afford Mainoo’s demands as it would take him above Cole Palmer in their wage books, something the London side are keen to avoid given the ex-Man City starlet’s raised standing in the dressing room.

United will also likely ask for £80 million to part ways with the Carrington graduate, and even with the amount of money the Stamford Bridge side have spent in recent times, Chelsea would struggle to afford Mainoo’s overall package.

“GMS sources have been informed that Mainoo’s desired wage may scupper Chelsea’s chances of reaching an agreement when the transfer window reopens as, despite being keen to have the chance to sign him if it becomes clear that a Manchester United exit is on the cards, there is scepticism over whether they are prepared to offer the amount he is seeking.

Chelsea would struggle to pay Mainoo’s wages

“A key reason for that is because the Blues are wary of offering a contract which puts further strain on the wage bill and allows him to earn more than Palmer, who has remained on a contract worth £130,000-per-week despite making himself a key man since his arrival from reigning Premier League champions Manchester City in September 2023.”

Chelsea could try and sneak into the picture should there not be any clarity regarding Mainoo’s future before the summer.

It must be remembered that Mainoo himself is keen to stay at United, who are prepared to agree a new deal before the current season concludes.

It will be interesting to see how Chelsea react in the summer should a new contract not be agreed. The 19-year-old is currently injured.

Rashford’s sale could potentially remove the need to move on the midfielder but only time will tell how INEOS deal with the situation.
