Man Utd star’s ‘criminal’ decision makes £50m signing inevitable with fate sealed amid two Amorim mistakes

Man Utd continue to flatter to deceive under Ruben Amorim, while one star’s “criminal” decision will precede his fall in the pecking order and eventual exit…

Ruben Amorim took his Man Utd side to the Basque region of Spain on Thursday evening for his 25th game in charge, presumably feeling as if it was his 250th.

It’s hard to believe that the 40-year-old is only four months into his reign at Man Utd, which has been littered with negatives and barely a handful of positives.

Some of the high points have come in the Europa League; four of his ten wins have come in this competition.

Man Utd’s weekend exit from the FA Cup added to their woes in the Premier League, with shameless outlets across the continent already all in on the ‘sack’ angleIn reality, we are still miles away from this being a serious conversation.

It’s hard not to feel at least a little empathy for Amorim, who hoped for some much-needed respite against a significantly below-par Real Sociedad side in the first leg of Man Utd’s Europa League knockout tie on Thursday night.

On paper, Man Utd’s draw against Real Sociedad was really tough, but the visitors were boosted by the hosts still reeling from their emphatic 4-0 loss to FC Barcelona at the weekend.

The opening half was a non-event that the Red Devils slightly edged as Sociedad failed to register a single shot on target.

Man Utd’s defence-first approach suggested they were satisfied with a draw, which is fair enough. But Sociedad’s lack of threat encouraged Amorim’s side to step up the pitch as they gradually gained confidence and were on top of the match.

United should have led at the break as Bruno Fernandes’ shot was brilliantly blocked by Aritz Elustondo before they spurned a couple of chances to score at the rebound.

The away side did find the net shortly after the break as a forward run from Alejandro Garnacho and subsequent pass to Joshua Zirkzee resulted in the goal-shy forward converting from the edge of the box, albeit with the help of some poor positioning from goalkeeper Alex Remiro.

But just as the Red Devils were on course for a vital victory, they found a way to shoot themselves in the foot as Real Sociedad – who had offered sod all – were gifted a penalty as Bruno Fernandes handled the ball in the area.

Spain’s Euro 2024 hero Mikel Oyarzabal emphatically converted the spot-kick, to which, Man Utd’s supporters must have said: ‘Oh f***, here we go again.’

Orri Oskarsson should have turned the game around when he shot wide from close range inside the final ten minutes as Man Utd were let off the hook and escaped with a 1-1 draw.

Upon joining Man Utd, Amorim was brimming with optimism and smiling from ear to ear as he exuded the necessary charisma that his predecessor sorely lacked.

But Amorim – like the endless list of fallen greats to decline after joining Man Utd post-Sir Alex Ferguson – has been dragged down by the deep-rooted Old Trafford plague.

The up-and-coming head coach appeared to have elite European clubs queuing up to secure his services, but he foolishly said yes to taking on a basket case club as he followed INEOS in biting off more than he can chew.

Man Utd’s shoestring January transfer budget and dreadful recruitment has undermined Amorim’s start, but he’s not faultless in this mess. One of the six mistakes he’s made since replacing Erik ten Hag – including accepting the job in the first place – is his insistence on sticking with his chosen 3-5-2 formation and showing zero willingness to adapt in a crisis.

This group of players are not suited to this system, and he’s asking for trouble as he attempts to drill it into them amid non-stop fixtures in the Premier League and cup competitions.

Man Utd were really bad under Ten Hag, but they have looked even worse since Amorim took over, with no flow to their play and an ordinary (at best) attack.

Amorim’s system relies on wing-backs to provide much of the attacking support, but January signing Patrick Dorgu is already setting off pre-flop alarm bells and Diogo Dalot is not up to the task.

Man Utd are really hard to watch at the moment with Amorim’s spark-lacking squad unable to play on instinct. It all looks so jarring and laboured with their severe decline exposed especially in games against average (to be kind) opponents Fulham and Real Sociedad as they fail to punish them.

Zirkzee and Hojlund have rightly been hammered for their performances this season as they need to produce more in front of goal, but they are not helped by the lack of support behind them.

The only time Dalot has looked a natural threat in the attacking third was against Trent Alexander-Arnold and his inability to fit into this system was exposed during a first-half flashpoint at Real Sociedad.

Dalot was fed on a speedy breakaway, and his correct next course of action was a simple enough square ball to Hojlund, who surely would have converted.

Instead, he pulled the ball back to Garnacho before Dorgu eventually shot over the ball. Robbie Savage tore into the right wing-back’s “unacceptable” decision on co-commentary before Paul Scholes labelled the moment “criminal” at half time.

Both were appropriate verdicts in a moment that should have immediately made Amorim eagerly anticipate reuniting with £50m Sporting Lisbon sensation Geovany Quenda, who has already “verbally agreed” to join Man Utd in a move that should contribute to Dalot being shown the door after he hammered another nail in his coffin at Real Sociedad.

Mountainous performance from De Ligt, but this United star was truly outstanding vs Real Sociedad

Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by Real Sociedad in the first leg of their round of 16 Europa League fixture. Here are our player ratings from the game.

(A score of 6 is around average)

Andre Onana 5 – Didn’t have a lot to do but didn’t cover himself with some of his distribution.

Leny Yoro 6 – Comfortable both on and off the ball. Went about his job with minimal to no fuss.

Matthijs de Ligt 7 –  Led the defence well in the middle role and made a crucial intervention before the end of the opening 45 minutes. Also got a touch while slipping, to deny Sociedad the chance to go ahead. Monster defensive shift!

Noussair Mazraoui 6 – Decent performance and did well to minimise the threat of Takefusa Kubo.

Diogo Dalot 4 – Typical Dalot display when playing at wing-back. Struggled in the final third, highlighted by when he passed up a good opportunity to deliver a cross into the path of Hojlund. Played a key role in United’s opening goal during the second half.

Casemiro 6 – One of his better games in a long time as he benefitted from Sociedad’s lack of pace and physicality in the middle of the park. A few line-breaking passes and also some good defensive contributions.

Bruno Fernandes 6 – Should have scored but his shot was blocked by a Sociedad defender. Positive with most of his actions. Conceded the penalty from which the hosts restored parity, although it appeared a harsh decision by the referee.

Patrick Dorgu 5 – Overlapped severally and kept aiming crosses into the box. Solid defensively and soldiered on after he seemed to have sustained an issue. One or two sloppy moments though.

Joshua Zirkzee 8 – Superb finish to give his side the advantage just before the hour-mark. Could have had two to his name had he converted a promising chance in the first half but he couldn’t hit the target. Some excellent link-up play and holding of the ball tonight.

Alejandro Garnacho 6.5 – Registered an assist for Zirkzee’s goal. Had a few sights of goal himself but he couldn’t find the back of the net.

Rasmus Hojlund 3 – It’s the same story every match at the moment. Dominated by opposition defenders and offers little to no threat.

Substitutes

Christian Eriksen 6 – Decent when he came on. Helped United keep the ball a little bit better.

Toby Collyer 5 – On the pitch for a very limited time. Nice to see him back from injury.

Victor Lindelof 5 – Also came on in the dying embers of the game.

Manchester United were made to settle for a 1-1 draw from the first leg of our UEFA Europa League last-16 tie away to Real Sociedad, despite a largely dominant display in Spain.

United created plenty of good opportunities at the Reale Arena and were fully deserving of the opener, when Joshua Zirkzee fired us into a 57th-minute lead.

But the Reds were unable to score a second goal that our performance would have warranted, before Mikel Oyarzabal drew our La Liga opponents level from the penalty spot, after the Video Assistant Referee had spotted a handball from Bruno Fernandes inside the 18-yard area.

The hosts came closest to a go-ahead strike in the time that remained after Oyarzabal’s 70th-minute spot-kick, but the clash finished 1-1 ahead of next week’s second leg at Old Trafford.

Hojlund was a beneficiary of the hosts’ aggressive style in the first half.

FIRST HALF – UNITED ON FRONT FOOT

The Reds were encouraged by the space our high-pressing hosts afforded us throughout the first half, and were twice able to spring numbers forward inside the opening 20 minutes, after playing around the home side’s efforts to win the ball back in our defensive third.

First, it was Zirkzee who occupied a vacant area in the centre of the wet field – due to the heavy rain as the game got under way – and received the ball well on the half-turn before driving forward and playing Rasmus Hojlund in, who saw his cross from the left eventually come to nothing after a good piece of skill worked some space for a delivery.

Shortly after, it was Hojlund’s turn to find the space in the middle of the park and, after some tidy work under pressure from former La Liga stalwart Casemiro, our no.9 was the one running at La Real’s backline before feeding Alejandro Garnacho, who cut inside from the left and registered United’s first attempt on target with a curler into the arms of goalkeeper Alex Remiro.

Garnacho scored his first professional goal at the very same end on our last visit to the Reale Arena in 2022, and was looking lively as one of three returnees to Ruben Amorim’s XI for the teatime kick-off in the Basque Country.

The young Argentina international was involved again in our next big attack, laying the ball off to Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu who shot high and wide on his weaker right foot, at which point Hojlund voiced his view that his run should have been found by Diogo Dalot earlier in the move.

Dalot hesitated to play an early cross on that occasion, but it was the full-back’s smart grounded ball from the right that carved out our best opening of the half just minutes later. Diogo found Fernandes arriving in the penalty box, and our skipper would have scored but for a goalline diversion from defender Aritz Elustondo, who was on hand to get in the way of Zirkzee’s follow-up strike, before the United forward acrobatically placed our third attempt of the sequence narrowly wide.

Fernandes and Dalot were then able to link up again before the opening 45 minutes was out, but this time it was roles reversed as the former’s long diagonal ball over the top of the hosts’ defence found the latter’s searching run forward, but Dalot’s subsequent glancing header was grasped by a grateful Remiro in goal.

Our persistence appeared to have paid off, but Fernandes was denied by an impressive piece of defending.

SECOND HALF – PENALTY PEGS UNITED BACK

There was a hope that Amorim’s men wouldn’t rue those missed first-half chances as the players re-emerged for the second period, and Leny Yoro’s almost-immediate clearance to make sure Oyarzabal didn’t get on the end of Takefusa Kubo’s dangerous cross from the right was a reminder of the need to keep our performance levels high.

What followed was more promising play going the other way, as United continued to search out a deserved opening goal. Garnacho twice went close to providing it, striking the outside of the netting after getting on the end of a low ball across the face of goal from Dorgu, shortly before having another low first-time effort tamed by Remiro.

Alejandro may not have been able to find the breakthrough himself, but it was the 20-year-old who set up the United opener when it did arrive in the 57th minute. Casemiro and Dalot both played their part in getting the ball out to Garna on the right flank, who rolled the ball to the edge of the penalty area where Zirkzee met it with a low, firm strike that had enough power on it to beat Remiro centrally.

When Garnacho hit the side-netting in an attempt to double the advantage almost straight after, it looked as if the Reds’ grip on the game had only got firmer with the goal, but Brais Mendez kept us honest with a long-range curler which had Onana scrambling before it whistled past his posts.

Garnacho admirably picked out Zirkzee for the opening goal.

The Reds responded by foraying forward again, but it was not long before our lead was wiped out at the end of a somewhat bizarre sequence. United had appeared to clear a corner from the right successfully, but referee Ivan Kruzliak soon paused the game and it became apparent that a check with the Video Assistant Referee was ongoing.

Kruzliak was recommended to visit the pitchside VAR monitor and, after being shown footage of Fernandes unintentionally diverting the corner delivery away with his arm, awarded a penalty which La Real skipper Oyarzabal stepped up to convert.

Amorim’s side never fully rediscovered the control we had on the contest before the equaliser and, despite all of the opportunities, were probably somewhat fortunate not to go behind late on. Substitutes Sheraldo Becker and Orri Oskarsson combined, with the latter – the La Liga outfit’s top scorer in Europe this season – somehow unable to finish the former’s centre from close range.

A strong left glove from Onana was then required to stop Oskarsson’s fierce goalbound go at a stoppage-time winner, before the first half of the tie was brought to a close at 1-1, meaning it’s all to play in next Thursday’s rematch at Old Trafford.

Oyarzabal’s penalty was a kick in the teeth, but United can take confidence from our first-leg showing.

Man Utd: £38million ‘flop’ backed for exit expected season to go ‘a little bit better’ but form is ‘no shock’

Manchester United ‘haven’t been good enough’ this season claims Matthijs De Ligt as his side prepares to face Real Sociedad in the Europa League.

The European clash represents their final chance of securing any silverware this season after recently being knocked out of the FA Cup.

Sitting 14th in the league table, they hold an outside chance of winning a trophy for what would be the third consecutive season.

Recent form tells us that expectations should be low given their penalty shootout exit to Fulham and just two league wins in their last six including three defeats.

Despite only taking over earlier this season, the pressure has been ramped up on manager Ruben Amorim, who claimed that not even winning the competition would help save their season ahead of their first leg with Sociedad.

“It’s just the pressure of winning. In this club, everything is so important. Just the pressure of winning is always the same. Not just winning, but also the performance. I think we have, in this moment, a lot of pressure on us.

“People look at this competition as the only competition that can save our season. I don’t see it like that. Nothing can save our season.”

De Ligt admits lack of shock to United form

Also speaking ahead of the game was their £38million summer signing De Ligt, who has come under fire this season for his performances.

United legend Paul Scholes previously claimed he should be sold due to his poor form while ex-Premier League stars Michael Owen and Martin Keown have both criticised the former Ajax star.

“I wouldn’t call it a shock,” said De Ligt when discussing United’s poor form. “What I said, obviously, you would have expected a little bit better the way it is at the moment. But, yes, it’s the Premier League where you’re playing.

“And the Premier League is, you can’t be at 99 per cent every day because then you lose games against the teams that are in the Premier League. So, obviously, this season, in a lot of games, we haven’t been good enough. So we know that.

“We try to improve as a team, try to improve as an individual, which also is really important, I think. And then, in the end, it has also sometimes a little bit to do with luck also, I think. But we all know that we have to improve and to become better.

“But I’m now talking about the Premier League. But I think tomorrow [vs Real Sociedad] is another chance to show our worth in a European competition.

“Until now, we haven’t lost a game. So hopefully we can keep it that way and get a good result.”

Arsenal transfers: Mikel Arteta learns new asking price for top target who’s ‘destined for greatness’

Arsenal’s pursuit of RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko could see them pay up to £62million this summer according to reports.

The Slovenian striker is in high demand after impressing since moving to Germany from RB Salzburg and stands out as one of the most unique young strikers in world football.

Only 21, he stands at 6ft 5in tall and is blessed with exceptional pace, is two-footed and capable of creating something out of nothing.

Interest was high in the January transfer window from Arsenal and other Premier League clubs but a gentlemen’s agreement ensured he would remain in Germany until the summer at least.

His deal doesn’t expire until 2029 which places Leipzig in a strong negotiating position, however, there is a release clause that will be available this summer which is likely to be triggered by a top club in Europe.

As reported by Sky Germany, the specific clause will start at around £49.5m (€60m) but could go above £66m (€80m) if certain conditions are met and it is understood the clause is currently £62m (€75m).

NK Domzale director and Slovenian Matej Orazem has opened up on Sesko’s potential, telling Sky Sports that: “I think that he is destined for greatness.”

Arsenal to face stiff competition for Sesko

For Mikel Arteta, the signing of a striker must be the first signing they aim to make this summer after seeing their season fall apart without having that recognised number nine to rely on.

If Sesko was signed, he would go straight into the team and would instantly become their new starting forward making it an easier transition than it might be at other clubs.

Chelsea are still weighing up multiple options and would have players like Nicolas Jackson, Marc Guiu and Christopher Nkunku as competition, whereas at Arsenal it would likely just be Kai Havertz, who could also drop into a deeper role if needed.

Arsenal are said to be firm favourites having done a lot of the leg work in the January transfer window and that should put them at the front of the line.

There was that late bid for Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins as well which was rejected and a move for the England international hasn’t been ruled out according to reports last month.

Another option could be Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak who starred against Arsenal in the League Cup this season; Liverpool are another name linked with a move but it is clear there are multiple options for the Gunners to explore this summer, with Sesko being perhaps the easiest to acquire.

Confirmed United XI vs Real Sociedad: Yoro, Casemiro and Garnacho in for Maguire, Ugarte and Eriksen

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has made three changes to his side for this evening’s crucial Europa League round of 16 first leg clash with Real Sociedad.

Harry Maguire and Manuel Ugarte have minor injuries and did not travel, while Christian Eriksen returns to the bench after a disappointing outing against Fulham on Sunday.

The trio are replaced by Leny Yoro, Patrick Dorgu and Alejandro Garnacho.

Dorgu is in the middle of a three-match domestic suspension but is able to play in Europe.

Toby Collyer returns to the squad after missing four weeks through injury.

The Starting XI

Andre Onana is in goal.

The back three are Noussair Mazraoui, Matthijs de Ligt and Yoro.

Diogo Dalot and Dorgu are the wing backs.

Ugarte is replaced by Casemiro in midfield, who will partner Bruno Fernandes.

Up front, Rasmus Hojlund is the centre forward, Josh Zirkzee the inside right and Garnacho on the left.

The Substitutes

Amorim’s substitutes’ bench is once again not complete and has only seven players.

The two reserve goalkeepers are Dermot Mee and Elyh Harrison.

The remaining subs are Victor Lindelof, Harry Amass, Ayden Heaven, Eriksen and Toby Collyer.

Chido Obi was not registered to play in Europe, while Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez, Mason Mount and Kobbie Mainoo are all also out injured.

Kick-off in San Sebastian is at 5.45pm.

Ruben Amorim has named his Manchester United side to take on Real Sociedad in the first leg of this evening’s UEFA Europa League last-16 tie.

There are three changes from the XI that started Sunday’s Emirates FA Cup clash with Fulham, with Harry Maguire and Manuel Ugarte – who both picked up knocks in that game – replaced by Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu and Casemiro.

The third alteration sees Alejandro Garnacho come in for Christian Eriksen, who is one of Amorim’s seven substitutes for the 17:45 GMT kick-off at the Reale Arena in San Sebastian.

It means Andre Onana resumes in goal, with Noussair Mazraoui a prime candidate to drop into the three-man defence and line up alongside centre-backs Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro, if we are to set up in Ruben’s favoured 3-4-2-1 system.

Mazraoui played at wing-back against Fulham but the return of Dorgu – eligible to play in European competition while he serves a three-match domestic suspension – should see the latter return on either the right or left flank, with Diogo Dalot expected to operate from the opposite side.

Casemiro comes in for Ugarte and will likely partner captain Bruno Fernandes in central midfield, with Garnacho and Joshua Zirkzee poised to feature from the attacking midfield positions, behind our top scorer in this season’s Europa League, Rasmus Hojlund.

It’s a youthful bench for the Reds in the Basque Country, with Eriksen and Victor Lindelof joined by Elyh Harrison, Dermot Mee, Harry Amass, Ayden Heaven and Toby Collyer as substitutes – all of whom are aged 22 or younger.

Speaking to TNT Sports upon arriving at the Reale Arena, Amorim explained the importance of injecting freshness into his line-up for this one, on the back of a week in which we played with 10 men for most of last Wednesday’s win over Ipswich and 30 minutes of extra-time against Fulham just four days ago.

“It’s really important. We don’t have a lot of options, but they are ready,” said the boss, in his pre-match TV interview with the broadcaster.

“We try to manage the load these three days. I know that in the second half we will feel it a little bit, but we are excited to be here and we can deal with the physicality of the game.

“We need to be really strong, especially in the beginning of the game. It’s going to be really intense so we choose the team thinking about that also.”

Man Utd transfers: Man City, United in transfer for European champion scouted by Liverpool

Manchester City and Manchester United are both reportedly interested in a move for one of Serie A’s best midfield performers this summer.

Both sides are said to be in the market for a midfield addition for differing reasons but both teams are set to undergo a rebuild.

City have Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan out of contract but could also lose Jack Grealish, Kalvin Phillips and James McCatee, but they have already brought in Nico Gonzalez in the January window.

United’s summer business is far more difficult to predict. If Ruben Amorim is to remain, he will need system-specific players and only a handful of current squad players haven’t been linked with an exit due to the club’s poor season performance.

Therefore, both are linked with a move for the versatile and impressive Atalanta midfielder Ederson. He was a key figure in their Europa League triumph last season and has become a leading figure in his position in Italy.

Liverpool have been credited with sending scouts to watch the Brazilian and now reports from Italy are claiming the Premier League interest is strong in the 25-year-old.

It is claimed that the Italian side rejected a bid of around €40 million earlier this season, with no club being named but there is also said to be interest from Juventus as well.

Man City’s transfer needs

With Gonzalez already through the door and Rodri set to return to action, Pep Guardiola already has two key starters to work with alongside the likes of Mateo Kovacic, Bernardo Silva and Matheus Nunes.

Rico Lewis has performed in midfield and offers a versatile option while De Bruyne, Phillips, Gundogan and McCatee all could be set for an exit to free up space.

Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey could be one option who ticks plenty of boxes, given he can play across positions and is ever-improving, technically strong and has both Premier League and Champions League experience.

Plus, there may well be another defensive addition following the news of long-term layoffs for both Nathan Ake and John Stones, with the latter struggling consistently with injuries. Juventus defender Andrea Cambiaso was heavily linked in January and could be a key option this summer.

Man United’s summer plans

In terms of United’s squad turnover, we could see any number of stars depart after their poor season which has seen them exit both domestic cups as they languish in 14th place in the league.

The same can be said for incomings given that they need additions across the pitch but one cost-friendly addition could be Lille’s Angel Gomes who is out of contract at the end of the season. He has impressed in Ligue 1 and recently made his England debut in late 2024.

They could also look to acquire Lille’s Jonathan David who has netted consistently in France across the past few seasons who is also out of contract. On top of that, the club could part ways with young stars Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho who could fetch up to £150million.

Man Utd hero slams defenders as ‘good players can play in any system’ amid Amorim doubts

Manchester United legend Gary Pallister insists “good players can play in any system” amid doubts over Ruben Amorim sticking firmly to his failing philosophy at Old Trafford.

United were expected to improve under Amorim after the Portuguese boss replaced Erik ten Hag in November, but they remain 14th in the Premier League and have just the Europa League remaining as potential silverware having been dumped out of the FA Cup on Sunday.

READ MORE: Ruben Amorim to blame for six Man Utd mistakes, including Mainoo and Antony

Questions have been raised over Amorim’s insistence on sticking with his philosophy and 3-4-3 system amid the players’ struggles and Pallister reckons the head coach would consider switching to a back four if his side was in genuine danger of being relegated.

Pallister told GOAL: “If we were in real danger of being in a relegation battle, I would be surprised if he didn’t change it. You would have to go back to the four and the way the players have played most of their career at Manchester United. I think he knows we’re not going to get involved in a relegation battle. We’re 15 points clear of that.

“Fortunately he has got the leeway to stick with it. I would be concerned if he didn’t and we were in a relegation battle, I would be asking him to change it, but he wants to stick by his philosophies, by his guns – this is what has brought him success and what he believes can bring him success at Manchester United.

“It’s getting the players to believe and adapt, and get the players in that can play the system he wants to. I’ve got no issues with it at the moment. You have to look a couple of months into next season, by the time he has got a pre-season with the team, bring in the players he wants, the ones he’s going to keep believing in the system, and that’s when we will probably start to judge Ruben Amorim.”

Pressed further on whether United have the options at present to play with three central defenders, Pallister claimed the absence of Lisandro Martinez due to an injury is causing problems, but also insists “good players can play in any system”.

He added: “[Lisandro] Martinez would probably give you balance in a three. He was coming back into some decent form before his injury – that’s been a problem. I think [Matthijs] de Ligt and [Harry] Maguire would prefer to play in the middle of the three, where it’s a little bit easier and you don’t get exposed to the width.

“Maybe he needs a centre-back with a little bit more pace that can play right centre-back – or [Leny] Yoro could fit in there because he’s got the pace.

“I believe good players can play in any system. Football is about contests between two players – the player you are up against and you win your battles. If you don’t win your battle, your team is going to struggle in that area of the pitch. I think they should all be able to adapt to play in a back five, personally.”

José Mourinho speaks out on Ruben Amorim’s record at United, shares very blunt verdict on Sir Jim Ratcliffe

Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has extended his support to Ruben Amorim, while also giving his verdict on Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s tenure at the club so far.

Amorim has endured a tumultuous start to life at United since replacing Erik ten Hag in November last year, losing eight of the 16 Premier League games he has taken charge of.

At the moment, United are languishing in 14th place in the table, with just 33 points gained from a possible 81.

Having been knocked out of the FA Cup by Fulham last weekend, the Europa League represents United’s last chance to win a trophy and clinch European football ahead of next season.

Despite the team’s struggles under Amorim, Mourinho – who was in charge of the club from 2016 to 2018 – has offered his backing.

The Fenerbahce gaffer told Sky Sports about Amorim, “He’s a good kid. Always very respectful to me. We had a good relationship for a few years. He knows I wish him well.”

Mourinho confirmed that he and Amorim last spoke during Christmas.

Since he assumed operational control of United a year ago, Ratcliffe has implemented a number of cost-cutting measures including making hundreds of staff redundancies, cancelling cup final perks for employees, cutting back on ambassadorial salaries and hiking ticket prices.

Asked about this, Mourinho answered, “To be honest I don’t know much about what’s happening.”

“I know Sir Jim Ratcliffe. I’m not saying we are big friends but we have a good relationship. I know him well. He invited me to his house a couple of times. I see him as a good person and a great businessman.”

“Of course, I feel for some of the people that I know [losing their jobs], but hopefully it goes in the right direction.”

Mourinho is eyeing his fifth major European trophy and Fenerbahce’s route to May’s final could see them face United in the last four at the end of April and start of May.

Despite this, he insisted he does not see it as an opportunity to get revenge against his former side.

“In my mind, I never feel about revenge. I never have that feeling because when I leave a club, I prefer to remember my good times at the club.”

Meanwhile, United are back in action later today when they face Real Sociedad in San Sebastian. Kick-off is at 17:45 GMT.
