Man Utd told to hire Keane if they sack Amorim as Carragher asks ‘how bad is this going to get?’

Man Utd should hire Roy Keane if they decide to end Ruben Amorim’s time at Old Trafford, according to former Red Devils striker Teddy Sheringham.

The Red Devils are going through a terrible spell in the Premier League with Amorim’s side currently 14th in the table after 27 matches so far this campaign.

It was hoped that Amorim would be able to turn Man Utd around after Erik ten Hag left at the end of October, with the Red Devils winning just five of their 16 Premier League matches under the Portuguese head coach.

The Man Utd players have struggled to adapt to Amorim’s formation, style of play and philosophy so far and Sheringham reckons the Red Devils need ex-captain Keane to go in and “ruffle a few feathers”.

Sheringham told Prime Casino: “Roy Keane, without a doubt. There’s no leaders at the football club. You need leaders at top football clubs.

“You know, your John Terrys, your Tony Adams, your Roy Keanes, players that lead by example and make sure other people are doing their jobs. No-one’s doing that at Manchester United. So, get Roy Keane in there to ruffle a few feathers, make sure that they all understand what they should be doing and do it.

“Roy’s been out of work for a little while now. I wouldn’t be averse to having him back at the football club, but I think there’s only one role for Roy and he needs to be the leader. If they’re thinking about changing Amorim, for me, putting someone back in charge, it would be a leadership coup to do that and get Roy in.

“There might be fireworks at certain times, but it needs to be sorted out, doesn’t it? Manchester United needs shaping up there. I don’t know whether he’s evolved in his time away, if he’s ready to go back into football or not. His ego would probably take him back in there as well.”

On whether Sir Alex Ferguson would have been able to turn the current Man Utd side around, Sheringham added: “I think Fergie evolved over the time that he was at United. From what I’ve been told, he was far more sedate in his manner by the time I got to United and had started to become more relaxed.

“Fergie was a cool customer compared to what he was at Aberdeen, so I think he would have adapted. He would understand the current situation and he would have worked out how to speak to certain players.

“I think there’s still a time to speak to players in no uncertain terms, to ruffle a few feathers. But you have to make sure that if you’re digging out a player, you’re digging out the right ones.

“You need your players in the dressing room to understand what you want from everybody, not just from your leaders. Fergie would probably go for one of his leaders to send a message.

“He might even tell him beforehand that ‘I’m going to come for you in this meeting but it’s not really directed at you, I’m directing it at you so that other players look and think ‘Jesus, if he’s having a go at him like that, how does he feel about me? I need to buck my ideas up”.

“That was the psychology side of the way Sir Alex went about things in his dressing rooms, and I think it’s still needed, and it needs to be done at certain times. This United team definitely needs it.”

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher reckons the current Man Utd side is the “worst” of his “lifetime” and he wonders how much worse it’s going to get.

Carragher told the Daily Telegraph: “No-one expected it would get even worse. When watching United now, the question I cannot shake off is: ‘How bad is this going to get?’

“This is the worst United team of my lifetime and the bare minimum that could have been expected after Amorim took charge, that the team would look like they are being coached better than they were under Ten Hag, has not materialised.”

Carragher had expected a similar transformation at Man Utd as the one Mikel Arteta oversaw at Arsenal, the Liverpool legend added: “There are many obvious similarities, from the lowly league position to a squad which needs rejuvenating as it has too many high-earning under-performers. But from day one you felt Arteta was moving Arsenal in the right direction.

“Amorim’s early struggles at United are a reminder of how tough it is to revive a fallen giant. At the moment, United fans must feel like they are pinning their hopes on blind faith based on Amorim’s record at Sporting Lisbon.

“United’s players have not responded well to his methods. Has a single player looked any better than they were under Ten Hag? In fairness, most of the United players have surrendered any right to express disapproval about any manager given how poor they have been for so long.”

Former Man Utd man ‘won’t play for England again’ as FA chief speaks out on decision

Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham has confirmed that ex-Man Utd player Mason Greenwood has asked to switch allegiances to Jamaica.

Greenwood spent last season on loan at Spanish side Getafe and signed a five-year contract with Marseille in the summer after Man Utd agreed to sell him for £26.6m.

He has started very well in France with Marseille second in the Ligue 1 table and the former Man Utd striker contributing 15 goals and three assists in 24 matches.

The 23-year-old was suspended by the Red Devils on January 30, 2022 over allegations relating to a young woman after images and videos were posted online.

He faced charges including attempted rape and assault, but the Crown Prosecution Service announced in February 2023 that the case had been discontinued.

Man Utd co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe had said in February last year that the club would take a decision on Greenwood’s future in the summer, and “justify it one way or the other”.

A short statement from the Red Devils confirmed the transfer to Marseille, which delivered on the club’s prior commitment that the one-cap England international would continue his career away from Old Trafford.

There have been rumours for a while that Greenwood will switch his international allegiances to the Jamaica national team after leaving the Premier League.

And now FA chief executive Mark Bullingham has confirmed that the player has “asked” to “switch” and that it’s a “personal decision” by the player.

Bullingham said: “My understanding is that he’s asked to switch.

“That’s happened formally, so he wouldn’t be able to (play for England again) because you can only switch once. It’s a personal decision by him.”

Marseille manager Roberto de Zerbi recently insisted that Greenwood can improve his game in one area particularly after a good start at the French club.

De Zerbi said: “Greenwood is not a specialist on corners. He could become one, but he is focused on the goal. When he goes to take a corner, he goes a bit like….. And that annoys me.”

Speaking last month, journalist Julien Laurens insisted that Greenwood no longer exists in the eyes of the BBC when talking about the French league and Marseille.

Laurens revealed in February: “He doesn’t exist anymore. On the BBC, in the Euroleagues show on European and foreign football, we don’t talk about Mason Greenwood.

“We can talk about Marseille, [Roberto] De Zerbi, [Adrien] Rabiot…People complain, write to the BBC saying: ‘Why are you talking about him? We shouldn’t talk about him’.”

“A very clear picture”: Majorly positive injury update for starlet as United predict him to return this month – report

Dan Gore

Manchester United are optimistic that academy midfielder Dan Gore will be able to continue his loan spell at Rotherham United later this month.

The 20 year old joined The Millers at the end of January but was only able to play one match, when he got an assist.

It was then announced that Gore would be out for a few weeks with a foot injury, much to the surprise of the Rotherham manager Steve Evans who was left “perplexed” by the youngster picking up the problem in a light training session.

A few weeks ago, it was then reported that Gore had returned to Carrington to continue his rehabilitation.

Gore has since stated in an interview that he is “absolutely gutted” by the injury that has massively affected his loan spell at the club.

There has been a majorly positive update on the player’s health, however.

According to the Rotherham Advertiser, the League One side’s manager claimed that Man United have told him that the player will be back in a couple of weeks or so.

Evans claimed that “Manchester United are saying the third week in March.”

“Manchester United’s words to us were that they will have a very clear picture then.”

“Our medical staff are in regular contact with their counterparts at Manchester United. They speak every couple of days. I speak to the coaches there, too, because I know them.”

The youngster will be desperate to get back onto the pitch and get some minutes under his belt after a horrendous year with injury concerns.

At Port Vale last year he picked up an injury right at the start of his loan spell and would end up playing just 54 minutes during his entire time at the club.

The 20 year old will be champing at the bit to get some serious minutes logged in senior football as Rotherham still have 12 matches to play in League One.

Key department declared safe from Ineos’ job cutting frenzy at United – report

Manchester United have sought to reassure families of academy starlets that they remain committed to their development in spite of recent cuts savaging other departments of the club.

Last summer Ineos decided to make 250 job positions redundant in a bid to cut costs at the club.

Staff at United were said to be reeling by the decision and feared more of the same in 2025.

These concerns were proven right when it was announced last month that 200 more jobs would be lost at the club in the latest efforts to reduce the number of people on the payroll.

United estimate that they will save around £25 million through these cuts to various departments.

Nonetheless, The Sun report that United have been keen to stress that the academy won’t be affected by any staff losses.

“United bosses have re-assured parents and players that the academy remains at the heart of the club’s strategy.”

“Academy Director Nick Cox acknowledged it has been an unsettling season given poor results on the pitch for the first team and the difficult decisions being taken to improve the financial position of the club.”

He went on to claim that the development of young players is still “at the heart of our strategy for returning the club to the top of English and European football.”

Cox sought to reassure families of current players and potentially new ones that the academy will still have the money and staff on board to deliver on this promise.

A source claimed, “there’s been an awful lot of negative news coming out of Old Trafford so Nick wanted to try and reassure everyone that United is still the best place for their boys.”

United have undertaken a lot of recent work on their academy during the last few years and this has seen an upturn in form with the club winning the Youth Cup in 2022 and they find themselves in the semi-final this season.

This season has also seen the debuts of Toby Collyer, Ayden Heaven and Chido Obi with a collection of young starlets all waiting in line to make their first appearance in the not so distant future.

Deeply personal issue develops for Ruben Amorim, could derail his future at United – report

Ruben Amorim’s wife is reportedly unhappy in Manchester, adding to the problems that are piling up on the United head coach’s plate.

The Red Devils have had a terrible season domestically as they have slumped to 14th in the league and look on course to finish in the bottom half of the Premier League for the first time in history.

Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag in November but he has only managed to win five out of 16 league matches and the club has recorded a goal difference of minus six during this time.

The Red Devils have also exited the FA Cup and Carabao Cup but they do have a lot to play for in the Europa League after a 1-1 draw with Real Sociedad yesterday in the first leg of the last sixteen tie.

Amorim has also come under criticism for his playing style as numerous pundits have ripped into his lack of willingness to adapt his 3-4-3 system in spite of a significant number of United players lacking the skill to suit his demands.

To add to his problems, The Sun report that there are rumours that Amorim’s wife Maria is also unhappy in the city.

They state that, “Manchester United’s winter of misery has put Ruben Amorim in the spotlight. But the city’s miserable winter has taken its toll as well.”

“Training ground talk is that Amorim’s wife Maria has struggled to come to terms with the wind, rain and dark nights over the first few months of his Old Trafford reign.”

The United manager originally moved over by himself but he revealed that his family joined him in Manchester at the start of the year and he moved into a suburban house after spending just over a month at a city centre hotel.

Manchester is famous for its drizzly weather and will undoubtedly be a stark contrast to the sunny conditions that the family will be used to in Lisbon, Portugal.

The good news is that with the beginning of spring, the days will soon get a lot longer and brighter in Manchester and numerous players and families from sunnier climates have been able to settle without any major issue throughout the club’s history.

United’s fans will hope that the beginning of the spring weather will also see a brightening of the mood around Old Trafford and that some more positive results on the pitch will be just the anecdote needed.

United plotting stunning summer swoop for 15-goal hitman who has set the PL alight this season – report

Rasmus Hojlund put in yet another dismal performance during Manchester United’s 1-1 draw away from home against Real Sociedad in the Europa League on Thursday.

Given Chido Obi was ineligible for the game, the 22-year-old completed the full 90 minutes and yet failed to muster a single effort on goal nor did he even attempt a dribble.

The Dane has now gone 19 games without finding the back of the net and it is clear to see that his confidence is at an all-time low.

Ruben Amorim is desperate for attacking reinforcements in the summer after INEOS failed to sign a forward in January and ideally, the head coach would prefer a reunion with his Sporting protege Viktor Gyokeres.

Amorim desperate for a quality striker

But the Swede wants Champions League football, which is unlikely to be on offer at Old Trafford next season. Victor Osimhen is another target but INEOS would find it hard to match his humongous wage demands.

Which why the club are keeping track of a more cost-effective option and The Sun have revealed that Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta is a genuine target and the Red Devils have been scouting him recently ahead of a potential summer offer.

Feedback from the scouts has been extremely positive with the 27-year-old’s work-rate and physicality seen as the perfect fit for the head coach’s system.

The in-form Frenchman has 15 goals this season, including eight in as many Premier League games in 2025 including a double against Amorim’s side. The player is open to moving to Old Trafford should an offer arrive.

“MANCHESTER United are monitoring Jean-Phillipe Mateta and could make a shock summer swoop for the Crystal Palace striker. United scouts have watched Mateta’s last three Premier League matches.

Mateta is a genuine target

“His mobility and willingness to toil as the arrowhead means Amorim’s scouts believe he would be a prime fit for the manager’s favoured 3-4-3 formation.

“The chance to switch from Selhurst to Old Trafford would appeal to a player who believes he is ready to play on one of the game’s grander stages if the opportunity arrives.”

He had arrived for £11 million back in January 2022 and given his importance to Oliver Glasner’s plans, the Eagles are likely to ask for a considerable amount, with exact details not provided in the report.

Whether INEOS can afford such an outlay remains to be seen. Another cheaper alternative being monitored is Liam Delap of Ipswich Town, who could be available on a cut-price fee should the Tractor Boys get relegated this term.

Man Utd: Scholes accuses one star of ‘sulking’ with ‘criminal’ teammate blasted for denying ‘easy goal’

Paul Scholes hit out at a couple of Manchester United stars as Ruben Amorim’s side were held to a 1-1 draw against Real Sociedad in the Europa League.

The Red Devils travelled to face Real Sociedad in the first leg of their Europa League knockout tie on Thursday evening.

Man Utd failed to capitalise on Real Sociedad’s below-par performance as Amorims team were held to a 1-1 draw, which admittedly still makes them favourites to progress to the next round.

The visitors gradually grew into the match and had the best chance before the interval as Bruno Fernandes forced a brilliant last-ditch block after being played in by Diogo Dalot.

United took the lead shortly after the break as Joshua Zirkzee scored from the edge of the area following a positive run from Alejandro Garnacho.

Man Utd were in control at this point, but the game turned on its head when Bruno Fernandes gifted Real Sociedad a penalty for handball.

Striker Mikel Oyarzabal sent Andre Onana the wrong way with the spot-kick to equalise and Man Utd had a lucky escape in the final ten minutes as Orri Oskarsson missed a huge chance to score his side’s second.

READ: Ruben Amorim mistakes clear in Real Sociedad draw as Man Utd star makes ‘criminal’ decision

Amorim is still struggling to implement his preferred 3-4-3 formation with Diogo Dalot among the players underperforming as he’s not suited to playing at wing-back.

Dalot is rarely a threat in the final third and he made a poor decision against Real Sociedad, opting to pull the ball back to Garnacho rather than execute a square ball to Rasmus Hojlund to score from close range.

Scholes commented on this incident at half time, saying Dalot made a “criminal” decision.

“The frustrating thing is, for 20 minutes we saw them warming up, and that’s exactly what they were practising. Into the wing-back, crossing it first time,” Scholes said.

“For Dalot not to see that, is criminal really. Hojlund, he’s made a great run. For any right-back in world football not to see that is criminal, and that’s an easy goal for Hojlund.”

Scholes has also questioned Garnacho’s attitude, suggesting he was “sulking” during Man Utd’s draw on Thursday evening. He added: “He looks like he is sulking a little bit to me.”

On Garnacho, Amorim said post-match:  “He was tired and you see it because we did a lot of transitions in the second half.

“Sometimes he was late to defend [in the second half]. I felt like he was tired to recover and do the same things.”

100% long balls, 5 ground duels won, 2 key passes, 1 assist: United loanee’s redemption tour continues in another top display

Manchester United loanee Antony registered another assist as Real Betis were held to a 2-2 Europa Conference League draw by Vitória SC on Thursday.

Betis took the lead three minutes after the break courtesy of striker Cedric Bakambu.

A cross was delivered into a crowded box, making contact with Antony, who headed it on to Bakambu. The Betis n.o 11 showed great strength to get the best of his defender before firing into the back of the net from close range.

It was by no means a glamorous assist by Antony but he won’t care too much, as they all count the same.

Antony with the assist, Cédric Bakambu with that final touch for Real Betis ✨ pic.twitter.com/E3d6bRxvWE

— CBS Sports Golazo ⚽️ (@CBSSportsGolazo) March 6, 2025

Betis’ lead didn’t last too long as Joao Sabino Mendes restored parity three minutes after they went ahead. In-form star Isco gave the advantage to Betis in the 75th minute but Vitoria SC hit them back again soon after, through Nelson Oliveira.

The two sides had to settle for the draw, with all to play for next week when they meet at Estadio Dom Afonso Henriques for the return leg.

During the time he was on the pitch, Antony touched the ball 66 times and found his teammates with 37 of the 46 passes he attempted (80% pass accuracy). Two of these were key passes

He connected with one of the three crosses he aimed and the single long ball he pinged.

Antony created one big chance and fired one shot, which was off-target and didn’t require Bruno Varela to swing into immediate action.

The Brazilian completed just one of the four dribbles he embarked on.

He delved into 12 ground duels and came out on top five times. Antony did not contest even one challenge in the air.

The 25-year-old also put in two tackles and drew as many fouls.

(Stats obtained from Sofascore)

Antony has now logged three goals and three assists in the eight games he’s played for Betis since joining them during the January transfer window.

He has looked like a player reborn and is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

“The rule is ridiculous”: Former United academy ace slams refereeing injustice United suffered vs Real Sociedad

Despite dominating proceedings, Manchester United will return to Old Trafford with only a draw to show for their efforts after their Europa League Round of 16 first-leg tie against Real Sociedad ended 1-1 on Thursday.

It was the visitors who took the lead at the Reale Arena through Joshua Zirkzee and Ruben Amorim’s team should have scored a few more given the chances they created.

Alejandro Garnacho was guilty of spurning several great chances and in the end, the Red Devils were made to pay as the referee awarded a dubious penalty to the home side.

United cleared the ball from a corner and none of the Real Sociedad players protested, and the referee kept playing on as he obviously saw nothing wrong.

VAR and referee hurt United

But VAR, who are supposed to let the game flow and intervene only when the referee needs help tried to find for an infringement on their own and called the referee over to check the monitor.

It was deemed that the header from a Real Sociedad player hit Bruno Fernandes’ hand when he was jumping for the same ball. His arms were not in an unnatural position and usually, players jump in that manner during set-pieces.

Yet the new UEFA handball law states if the ball hits the arm inside the box, it is a penalty and the decision was as soft and harsh as it can get.

Former United academy star and Wales international Robbie Savage slammed the rule on TNT Sports after the decision was awarded.

“The rule is ridiculous. On that angle there, the arm does stop him [Real Sociedad attacker] heading it because the arm is an unnatural position.

Harsh decision

“It is harsh though because that is how you jump but the arm has stopped the player heading the ball so, by the letter of the law and the way the rule is, it is a penalty even though it is harsh.”

Savage was also quick to point out that the current handball rule must be re-evaluated by UEFA and other football authorities.

Paul Scholes was also stunned by the initial decision and termed it a “strange” one. “‘I didn’t know why the game had stopped,” was how he reacted initially.

Amorim will hope to get more players fit for the second leg. Hopefully, the 20-time English league champions can get over this disappointment and the job done at Old Trafford.
