United to battle fierce PL rivals for “out of this world” midfielder this summer – report

Manchester United appear to be seriously considering a pursuit of Atalanta holding midfielder Ederson this summer.

Since Ruben Amorim arrived at Man United earlier this season, the Portuguese manager has been faced with the monstrous task of improving the struggling club’s fortunes on the pitch.

In addition to bringing his own unique playing style to the fold, Amorim turned to the transfer market to boost his squad. While a quiet January transfer window, Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven have proven to be much-needed reinforcements in defence.

This summer, it appears that Amorim will look to add even more talent to United’s ranks.

Last December, The Peoples Person noted United’s interest in Ederson, acknowledging how the dynamic holding midfielder could be an ideal fit for Amorim’s system.

Now, it appears as if United have stepped up their transfer pursuit.

“Liverpool and Manchester United have signalled an interest in rivalling Manchester City for the potential transfer of Atalanta midfielder Ederson,” CaughtOffside reported this morning, indicating that a fierce transfer race between the two bitter rivals could be on the cards.

“The Brazil international has shone in Serie A and has long been a top target for Man City, whose interest remains the most advanced for the time being, sources have told CaughtOffside.”

“However, it is also understood that both Liverpool and Man Utd have reached out in recent weeks to gather information on Ederson‘s situation ahead of this summer,” the report added.

Ederson have been a revelation for Atalanta this season, shining at the summit of European football.

Playing in nine UEFA Champions League matches this season, the Brazilian has won 56% of his ground duels and an impressive 64% of his aerial battles.

He has been particularly effective with the ball at his feet, with 69% dribbling and 91% passing, including 94% passing accuracy within his own half.

Ederson has also been a great asset when tracking back in defence, averaging 4.9 ball recoveries per game and 0.8 clearances. He has also made just a single error leading to a shot and no errors leading to a goal. (Stats via Sofascore)

It is thus not surprising that Fabio Capello called the Brazilian “out of this world for his ability to combine running, physicality, technique and intelligence.”

With an ageing Casemiro expected to leave United in the near future and Christian Eriksen’s future unknown, the club will need some new blood in the midfield.

Given his versatility and quality performances, Ederson could prove to be United’s ideal solution in the middle of the park.

Amorim hints at talisman’s injury return, claims United “need to survive” vs Arsenal

After their Europa League disappointment in Spain, Manchester United’s focus will be back on the Premier League ahead of their huge clash against Arsenal on Sunday.

Injuries remain a concern with Ruben Amorim forced to pick a weakened squad for the game at Reale Arena with Manuel Ugarte and Harry Maguire now joining the injury list.

The head coach revealed that it is highly unlikely that either of them will make it for the game against the Gunners at Old Trafford, which means almost the same squad will be available for the game.

Given how tired the team looked once Real Sociedad did get their fortuitous goal, Amorim made it very clear that Sunday was all about survival.

No injury returns

“I don’t know. We need to survive Sunday. The team was so tired in the last 20 minutes. We have to prepare Sunday and think about this important game for our season on Thursday. In this moment, I don’t know.”

He was subsequently asked about the injury situation at the club and he claimed that Amad could be back before the season while he also claimed Mason Mount would be back soon enough.

The coach claimed Maguire’s injury would need careful planning while Ugarte would also be back quickly along with Kobbie Mainoo.

“I think it’s just Amad and Lisandro but even Amad we will see in the last month. I don’t want to say anything but I have the hope to have Amad before the end of the season.”

On whether he can think of rotating the squad given the injuries he has currently, and next Thursday’s season-defining second leg, former Sporting boss said, “When you are in this kind of club you cannot think like that with a small squad in this moment.

‘We have to survive’

“We are trying to see all the players who are fresh and who are not in danger of getting an injury. Even with that we have to risk a little bit, but we have to be competitive on Sunday.”

“In the Premier League, every game is really important. In our moment, we need to win. It’s always a problem when we don’t win. We have to focus on everything at the same time.

“I think the biggest problem is not having all the players. In the beginning people talk about our rotation, especially in Europe, changing all the time and it’s because of this.”

Given Rasmus Hojlund’s dismal form in front of goal, the coach was asked about the likelihood of Chido Obi starting in the Premier League for the first time.

“If they are training, if they play today, they can be ready and Chido is on the list so he can play.”

Amorim was asked about how Mikel Arteta had to face similar situations initially at Arsenal before he cemented himself at the club.

Dig at Arteta

Amorim took an indirect dig at Arsenal and claimed that he would not get as much time to prove himself as Arteta, while complimenting the Arsenal boss for the way he has handled things at the Gunners.

“I will not have the time Arteta had. I feel that. It’s a different club. So we just need to survive with the players on Sunday and we are doing these games.

“I think it’s a different club. I think in that aspect the way Arteta dealt with that is an inspiration for everybody but I will not have the time like Arteta had.”

United’s big game record under Amorim is impressive and fans will be expecting a better performance on Sunday and will demand changes be made up front. Whether the coach complies will be interesting to see.

“Positive” contract talks with £70m star revealed as end of saga in sight, United a “priority” for him – report

There is “increasing confidence” at Manchester United that 19-year-old academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo will pen a new deal at the club while staying at Old Trafford is expected to be the youngster’s “priority”, according to reports.

Mainoo exploded onto the scene last season and, while he is yet to find his best role in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 system, he remains a key part of the United squad.

But as finances have started to trump football since INEOS’ arrival, the youngster was linked with a sensational Old Trafford exit, as any money received for his sale would count as ‘pure profit’.

Chelsea were said to be particularly interested in signing him, and the rumoured price tag was £70m.

However, the unsavoury saga of his potential departure could be nearing completion as GIVEMESPORT report that United have “reopened discussions” with the player over an “improved contract”.

The report explains that there is “increasing confidence that he will stay at Old Trafford instead of embarking on a fresh challenge when the summer transfer window opens for business.”

Combined with the later assertion that “Mainoo’s priority is to stay with his boyhood club”, the future looks much rosier than it did during a fraught January transfer window.

Now, far from trying to sell him, club bosses are said to have “made it clear” to the player that “handing him an extended agreement has been earmarked as a priority after they succeeded in persuading Amad Diallo to renew his contract.”

Reports surfaced earlier this week that Mainoo wanted as much as £180,000 a week plus bonuses to bring his wages in line with other senior players in the squad.

His current deal, which runs for a further two years, earns him £20,000 a week, and there is an acceptance on all sides that a considerable pay rise will be secured.

According to GIVEMESPORT, the England international wants his new pay package to be “in the region of £150,000 per week”, with the possibility of his wages increasing by an extra £30,000 if United “are involved in the Champions League and potential bonuses are taken into consideration.”

The odds of any Champions League clauses kicking in next season are very slim, with the Red Devils’ only entry route an unlikely Europa League win this campaign.

The task is made all the harder by the length of Amorim’s injury list, with Mainoo being one of the most significant names on that particular list.

The report explains that the United boss “still believes that he can fit into his preferred system after making a full recovery from injury.”

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim admits he will try not risk the fitness of his players in Sunday’s Premier League game against Arsenal.

The Reds travelled back from Spain after a 1-1 draw with Real Sociedad sets things up for an intriguing Europa League round-of-16 second leg at Old Trafford on Thursday.

Amorim spoke to journalists at the Reale Arena before boarding the plane and was asked about team news for the 16:30 GMT kick-off against the Gunners.

While admitting Chido Obi is an option to play against his former club, having not been eligible on Thursday, Ruben was clear that he will have to properly assess his squad in the build-up to the game against Mikel Arteta’s men, who hit PSV Eindhoven for seven in the Champions League on Tuesday.

When asked if any of the missing players, such as Harry Maguire and Manuel Ugarte, would be available, Amorim replied: “I don’t know. I don’t know. We need to survive Sunday. The team was so tired in the last 20 minutes.

“We have to prepare for Sunday and then think about this important game in our season on Thursday. But, in this moment, I don’t know.

“Everybody can start. If they are training tomorrow [Friday], if they played today [Thursday], they can be ready. Chido is on the list, so he can play

“We are trying to see all the players that are fresh and that are not in danger of getting an injury. Even that, we have to risk a little but we have to be competitive on Sunday.”

Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu serves the second of his three-match domestic suspension but Toby Collyer made his comeback from injury as a late substitute.

When pushed on whether anyone could return at the weekend, the head coach repeated: “I don’t know. I don’t think so, so we’ll see.”

However, he did provide a little more detail on the current situation when asked if some of the absentees may not return this season.

“I think it’s just Amad [and Lisandro Martinez],” he stated. “Even Amad, we’ll see in the end of the last month. I don’t want to say anything to you but I have the hope to have Amad before, we’ll see.

“Lisandro is out,” he emphasised. “Kobbie [Mainoo] can return. The rest, my worry is we have to be careful. Manu [Ugarte] will return. I think Luke Shaw and Mason Mount can return also. We’ll see but they are definitely going to return, especially Mason Mount.”

Goalkeepers Tom Heaton and Altay Bayindir have been out injured, with Dermot Mee and Elyh Harrison selected on the bench against Real Sociedad.

Jonny Evans has also not played since scoring in the Carabao Cup defeat to Tottenham Hotspur before Christmas.

ARSENAL’S TEAM NEWS

Gabriel Jesus suffered an anterior-cruciate ligament injury during the cup tie with the Reds at the Emirates Stadium and is a long-term absentee.

Bukayo Saka is still working on his rehabilitation, as is fellow winger Gabriel Martinelli.

Kai Havertz and Takehiro Tomiyasu are both out for the remainder of the campaign.

Amorim provides a hopeful update on Amad

ManUtd.com reporter Adam Marshall at Old Trafford.

Friday 07 March 2025 13:30

Amad could yet play again this season for Manchester United.

The Ivory Coast international, one of our shining lights this term after winning three Player-of-the-Month awards since August, sustained an ankle injury in training ahead of the game at Tottenham Hotspur in mid-February.

Head coach Ruben Amorim admitted he feared that the no.16 would not be available again in 2024/25 but the boss delivered a more positive update on the 22-year-old, during his press conference to preview Sunday’s Premier League encounter with Arsenal.

“Even Amad, we’ll see in the end of the last month,” said Ruben in San Sebastian, after the 1-1 draw with Real Sociedad in the Europa League.

“I don’t want to say anything to you but I have the hope to have Amad before, we’ll see.”

The Reds’ season is due to end on 25 May, when we welcome Aston Villa to Old Trafford for a league encounter.

Amad is registered as part of the Europa League squad so would be eligible for that competition if United can remain on the road to Bilbao.

The Reds need to get past Real Sociedad on Thursday at Old Trafford, with tickets still available to purchase, in order to retain hopes of lifting the trophy on 21 May at San Mames.

The versatile forward, who has also impressed at wing-back, last played in the 2-1 win over Leicester City in the Emirates FA Cup. He has scored nine times this term, including a hat-trick against Southampton, and regularly been a bright attacking spark.

We wish Amad well in his bid to regain full fitness.

Ruben says recovery is the key ahead of Arsenal

Old Trafford.

Friday 07 March 2025 13:30

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has stressed the importance of recovery during his press conference to preview Sunday’s Premier League match against Arsenal at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese sat down with reporters following Thursday’s Europa League draw with Real Sociedad in San Sebastian, answering questions about injuries, the squad’s fitness, goalscoring and this weekend’s challenge at the Theatre of Dreams. You can watch the video, and read every word, below…

With team news, any chance that Harry Maguire or Manuel Ugarte can make Sunday to face Arsenal?
“I don’t know, I don’t know. We need to survive Sunday. The team was so tired in the last 20 minutes. We have to prepare for Sunday and then think about this important game in our season on Thursday [the second leg against Real Sociedad] but, in this moment, I don’t know.”

You mentioned Rasmus Hojlund, for example, Chido Obi couldn’t play in this game. Is he someone you could think about potentially starting on Sunday?
“Everybody can start. If they are training tomorrow [Friday], if they played today [Thursday], they can be ready. Chido is on the list, so he can play.”

You mentioned about the team being a bit anxious to score goals. What can you do in the time you are training to kind of ease this anxiousness? What can you do on and off the pitch to solve this?
“You just have to sell them the idea these movements that we did sometimes today. We have to work on and show the image but, in the end, they have to score. If they score one, it’s going to be so much easier so he needs to score the first one.”

Are you expecting to have anyone back available for this match?
“I don’t know, I don’t think so, so we’ll see.”

Press conference v Arsenal Video

Press conference v Arsenal

Press conference | Ruben is asked about injuries, goalscoring, the right to protest and Sunday’s match against Arsenal…

Have you ever had to deal with such issues in your career? I mean, you obviously had to play the second half against Ipswich with 10 men, you had 120 minutes at the weekend and then you’ve had to come here. Have you ever had to experience anything like this?
“I will be ready for everything after this season so it’s a good thing.”

I’m not sure if you’re aware, there’s quite a big protest planned around the game on Sunday. Obviously, you’ve had to already deal with a quite a lot of turmoil at the club. Do the things that are happening outside the club, like a protest before a big game against Arsenal, make your job more difficult do you think?
“No, I think for everybody in our club it’s a really tough moment. It’s everything at the same time. The only thing I can do and our players can do is perform well and win. People have the right to protest, I think it’s a good thing to do that. It’s part of our club, everyone has a voice. But our job, in my job, is to just improve the team, give them something in the moment because they [the fans] deserve it and they are amazing. So we will see on Sunday and on Thursday.”

After tonight and the game against Fulham, is this the worst fixture you could have at this moment in time and is it just about getting through it?
“Yeah, any fixture. In the Premier League, every game is really important. In our moment, we need to win. It’s always a problem when we don’t win so we have to focus on everything at the same time. I think the biggest problem is to not have all of the players because, in the beginning, people talk about our rotation – especially in Europe, we are changing all the time. It’s because of this because it’s really hard and the Europa League is so much harder, in my opinion, than the Champions League. Not the games but the recovery to play Premier League on the weekend, so we have to deal with that.”

The problem you’ve got is that because you’ve got such a big game on Thursday, you don’t want to drain all the players…
“Yeah, one thing at a time. We’ll think about Sunday and then we’ll see.”

I think we asked you about two weeks ago about Mason Mount and Luke Shaw. Do you think we’ll see them again this season and are there any other players, apart from Lisandro Martinez and Amad, who you think we won’t see again this season?
“No, no, I think it’s just Amad. Even Amad, we’ll see in the end of the last month. I don’t want to say anything to you but I have the hope to have Amad before, we’ll see. Lisandro is out, Kobbie [Mainoo] can return. The rest, my worry is we have to be careful. Manu [Ugarte] will return, I think Luke Shaw and Mason Mount can return also. We’ll see.”

If you reach the Europa League final, hopefully we’ll see Amad possibly in Bilbao?
“Let’s talk about Sunday! We’ll see but they definitely are going to return, especially Mason Mount.”

Is there any way at all you can rotate and freshen up for Sunday? Because obviously Thursday is such a big game, it takes priority over Sunday.
“Yeah but, when you are in this kind of club, you cannot think like that with a small squad in this moment. So we are trying to see all the players that are fresh and that are not in danger of getting an injury. Even that, we have to risk a little bit but we have to be competitive on Sunday.”

On Mikel Arteta, he had to deal with some big players at Arsenal who he had to get out of the club and he had to make some big decisions. He’s made Arsenal a big force again. Do you see some similarities with what you’ve got at Manchester United in the way you’re having to go about the job?
“I don’t feel that. Again, I will not have the time that Arteta has. I feel that. It’s a different club, so we just need to survive the players on Sunday and me during these games. I think it’s a different club. I think in that aspect, the way Arteta dealt with that, is an inspiration for everybody. I will not have the time like Arteta had.”

Man Utd transfer off with club ‘very annoyed’ at ‘sulking’ star’s agent amid ‘significantly raised demands’

According to reports, the agent of Manchester United star Alejandro Garnacho made Serie A giants Napoli ‘very annoyed’ during the winter transfer window.

20-year-old Garnacho is enduring a difficult season as he has not scored in the Premier League since November 2024 and was heavily linked with an exit in January.

The Red Devils have been woeful this season as they are struggling in the bottom half of our calendar-year Premier League table.

Man Utd had a tight budget in January as they are second in our net spend table, and their poor performances have opened the door to several high-profile exits as they look to raise funds for their rebuild.

Most of United’s squad are available for a transfer heading into the summer and Garnacho is one player they could sell for a sizable fee in a pure profit transfer.

READ: Manchester United implode as Amorim ‘slams’ pair with Liverpool in line for points deduction and ‘rule change’

Napoli targeted Garnacho during the winter transfer window after they made him their preferred replacement for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who joined Paris Saint-Germain in one of January’s most expensive deals.

Antonio Conte’s side failed with a rejected bid for Garnacho and eventually exited negotiations with Man Utd as they moved onto other targets.

Garnacho has been accused of “sulking” in recent days and the door remains open for him to leave Man Utd this summer.

A report in Italy claims Napoli won’t re-enter the race to sign Garnacho after they were ‘very annoyed with the attitude of the agent’ in January.

The report explains:

‘Napoli do not appear to be inclined to return to the trail of the Argentine player Alejandro Garnacho, in view of next summer.

‘They are starting to take their first steps in strengthening their squad ahead of the summer. The Neapolitan club will not make any further attempts to sign Alejandro Garnacho, the Argentinean footballer from Manchester United, next summer.

‘The 2004-born player had been placed at the top of Giovanni Manna and Aurelio De Laurentiis’ wish list, as a replacement for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who moved to PSG.

‘It is unlikely that Manna will return to the fray for Manchester United’s Garnacho: Napoli was very annoyed by the attitude of the Argentine’s managers.

‘Last winter, the blue club had offered around 55 million euros to buy the player, but United has always remained firm on the request of 70 million euros.

‘Furthermore, the agent of the Argentine footballer, after having accepted an initial proposal of engagement, has significantly raised the demands asking for much higher figures and commissions, something that did not please the Neapolitan management.’

Man Utd vs Arsenal: Neville reveals shock prediction as ‘crowd will be with’ Amorim’s side

Former Man Utd defender Gary Neville has revealed his score prediction as the Red Devils host title-chasing Arsenal at Old Trafford over the weekend.

The Gunners travel to the Red Devils on Sunday with Mikel Arteta’s men needing a win to keep their slim hopes of a Premier League title push alive.

Arsenal are 13 points adrift of Premier League leaders Liverpool, although the Gunners have a game in hand, and it would take a minor miracle for the Reds to slip up from here.

Man Utd are in poor form under Ruben Amorim with the Red Devils currently 14th in the Premier League and showing very little progress under their Portuguese head coach.

Arsenal have had a number of attacking injuries in recent months, finding scoring in their last two Premier League matches hard, and now Neville thinks Man Utd could get a positive result against the Gunners on Sunday.

Neville said on The Overlap’s It’s Called Soccer! show: “Manchester United are playing so poorly at the moment but they do sometimes lift their game against big opponents.

“I think that will be the case on Sunday. The crowd will be with them, I think it will be 1-1.”

Host of the YouTube show, Rebecca Lowe, disagreed, commenting: “I’m going 2-0 to Arsenal. Sorry Gary!

“I know Arsenal haven’t got any strikers but I just don’t see a way that Manchester United win that game.”

Despite their failure to score in their last two Premier League outings, Arsenal destroyed PSV Eindhoven 7-1 in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash.

Speaking after the match, Arteta said: “I really enjoyed the match – thank you to the players for the performance they put in on a big night for us against a really good side,’ he said.

“The way they went through in the last round against Juventus was really impressive so the manner that we’ve done it, the way that we’ve played, the goals that we scored; thank you because it was a special night.”

When asked how huge the win over PSV could be for the rest of Arsenal’s season, Arteta continued: “Well, it obviously gives us a lot of joy, confidence and belief.

“But this is football, it’s not what we did three days ago, or today, it’s about what we’re going to do tomorrow, or at Old Trafford, how we behave and able to win again, and that’s it.

“Enjoy tonight because it was a very impressive performance, an unbelievable score, so we deserve that, and now take that, and keep improving as a team.”
