“Electric” 19yo wonderkid on Amorim’s radar as he finally looks to bin dismal United star in the summer – report

Manchester United had to be content with a draw against Real Sociedad on Thursday despite dominating proceedings and creating multiple chances.

The hosts equalised after a dubious penalty call while Diogo Dalot’s decision to not pass to Rasmus Hojlund inside the box was criticised by Ruben Amorim as well as pundits.

The full-back has really struggled, be it on either flank, since Amorim’s arrival. He is not a wingback and due to lack of options, the head coach has had to keep playing him.

Which explains the Red Devils’ interest in Geovany Quenda of Sporting CP with the 17-year-old eager to reunite with his former boss irrespective of the availability of European football at Old Trafford.

Quenda alternative

There have been reports that the 20-time English league champions are prepared to pay €40 million to land him next summer while the Portuguese giants are holding out for €60 million.

In case, an agreement cannot be reached, United have kept a backup plan ready with the club keeping their eyes on Roger Fernandes of SC Braga.

The 19-year-old is left-footed and can play on either flank and can double up as a winger if required. But he excels on the right which makes him a perfect replacement for Dalot. He already has five goals and as many assists this season.

He is in the 97th percentile for progressive carries and 98th percentile for successful take-ons, which shows his ability with the ball (as per fbref).

Football Analysis have described him as an “electric, pacey winger known for his fearless and confident play” who is also known for being “an explosive 1v1 specialist”.

His qualities and consistent displays this season have attracted plenty of interest with United being joined by fierce rivals Manchester City, Liverpool, Newcastle, and West Ham in the race.

In-demand Roger

Italian outfits Napoli and Atalanta are also keeping tabs on him as per TBR Football with the player having a release clause worth €40 million in his current contract.

“TBR Football can reveal that Roger Fernandes is emerging as a potential summer target for a host of clubs after another hugely impressive campaign for Braga.

“Sources with knowledge of the situation have confirmed to TBR Football that Manchester City, Liverpool, Newcastle, West Ham and Manchester United have all watched Fernandes in the last 12 months.

“We can also confirm that Italian outfits Napoli and Atalanta have shown an interest, together with Benfica and Porto, who would be open to keeping him in Portugal.”

United would ideally like to agree a deal for less than the release clause while a bidding war would suit Braga just fine. It will be interesting to see who finally lands up at Old Trafford, Quenda or Roger.

“It’s a waste to have him…”: Casemiro tells Amorim exactly how to fully unleash United teammate with “a lot of quality”

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro has insisted that it’s a waste to deploy Joshua Zirkzee as a striker, as his best position is in the number 10 role.

Zirkzee endured a tough start to life at United following his summer move from Bologna but over the past few weeks, he seems to have turned it around and is now showing positive signs of improvement.

Amidst the spate of injuries United are currently dealing with, Ruben Amorim has primarily utilised Zirkzee as one of his two number 10s and the decision has paid some dividends.

Zirkzee scored United’s only goal in their 1-1 Europa League draw with Real Sociedad on Thursday. The Dutch forward produced a superb finish after connection with an Alejandro Garnacho cut-back.

After the final whistle, Amorim told reporters he was happy with Zirkzee and his gradual progression.

Now, Casemiro has also waxed lyrical about the 23-year-old, as he explained how to get the best out of him.

Casemiro said [via The Mirror], “I’m very happy for him and I hope he continues to score goals, which is important for us.”

“He’s a very good player. He’s not a number nine who stays in the middle. He’s a nine who goes out more to the wings, which is why he plays as a bit of a No.10, which is what this coach likes.”

“He’s very good, he’s got a lot of quality, he likes to control the ball, to spin. He’s a player who has more quality. It’s a waste to have him standing up front alone.”

“He’s not a player who always wants to be up there, leading the attack and scoring goals that way. He’s more of a player who wants to play and create.”

Casemiro also opened up on his uncertain transfer situation, indicating it is “too soon” to discuss whether or not he’ll stay at United beyond the upcoming window.

“Of course I want to play, but I always say, and these are my values, that I respect the coach a lot, I respect the club. Every day I go to Carrington or Old Trafford, I try to do my best. If a player is on the bench and is happy, that player is not worth anything for any team.”

“Of course I want to play, I want to have more minutes, but the coach is the one who makes the decisions and I have a lot of respect for him and for the club.”

He added, “It’s too soon to talk about next season, but of course I have another year of contract and then an option. We have important games and on Sunday we have Arsenal.”

“I’m here, I’m available, with total happiness, and I’m ready for the coach and the club. As everyone knows, I’m a big character for the club.”

Casemiro’s contract at Old Trafford expires in 2026.

Man Utd transfer: INEOS make ‘shock’ PL striker ‘major target’ for two reasons amid Gyokeres ‘non-starter’ blow

Manchester United are reportedly turning to a new ‘major target’ as a move for Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres has been deemed a ‘total non-starter’.

The Red Devils require a huge overhaul as they have massively underperformed this season, languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table.

Man Utd need upgrades in various positions, but their summer priority will likely be the signing of a new striker as Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee are enduring difficult seasons.

Ruben Amorim‘s side are linked with several potential targets, including Sporting Lisbon sensation Gyokeres, who is a contender to be this year’s leading scorer in Europe.

Amorim and Gyokeres are known to have a great relationship from their time together at Sporting Lisbon and it has been suggested that the Red Devils could push for a reunion, but a report from The Sun claims this move is a ‘total non-starter’ despite the striker being ‘keen’ on working with the head coach again.

READ: Ruben Amorim mistakes clear in Real Sociedad draw as Man Utd star makes ‘criminal’ decision

Instead, Crystal Palace star Jean-Philippe Mateta has emerged as a potential alternative.

Oliver Glaser has got the best out of the 27-year-old as he scored nine goals in Crystal Palace’s last six Premier League games last season.

This season, he has 15 goals and three assists in his 33 appearances in all competitions and Man Utd are ‘monitoring’ him.

The report claims United ‘could make a shock summer swoop’ as he’s emerged as a ‘major target’. Explaining why they admire Mateta, The Sun adds:

‘Top of the list is Sweden’s Viktor Gyokeres, Amorim’s former striker at Sporting Lisbon.

‘But despite Gyokeres being keen on the idea of a reunion with Amorim, he’s pushing for a move to a Champions League club, which would make a switch to United a total non-starter.’

‘This has led to United casting their net wider, and they’ve watched Mateta’s last three Premier League matches.

‘United’s scouts were also watching on as Mateta was pole-axed by the kung fu assault by Millwall keeper Liam Roberts in Saturday’s FA Cup fifth round tie, which saw the Eagles ace ferried to hospital before receiving 25 stitches in a head wound.

‘His mobility and willingness to toil as the arrowhead means Amorim’s scouts believe he would be a prime fit for the manager’s favoured 3-4-3 formation.

‘The chance to switch from Selhurst to Old Trafford would appeal to a player who believes he is ready to play on one of the game’s grander stages if the opportunity arrives.’

Manchester United implode as Amorim ‘slams’ pair who needed Fernandes ‘intervention’ after ‘bust-up’

Manchester United are in crisis again with Ruben Amorim and Bruno Fernandes having to break it up between Rasmus Hojlund and Diogo Dalot.

Ask a simple question
‘Harry Kane can return to Premier League to make history, so could Man Utd, Chelsea, Spurs or ARSENAL move be on cards?’ – The Sun.

Probably not, no.

One rule for them
Not content with merely pretending that Liverpool might be deducted points in the aftermath of Arne Slot’s red card against Everton in February, the Daily Mirror website is back with this:

‘Premier League considers huge referee rule change after foul-mouthed Arne Slot rant’

How many times did FA chief executive Mark Bullingham mention Liverpool, Slot or his ‘foul-mouthed rant’ when discussing the foolproof idea of fitting Premier League referees with bodycams? You have indeed guessed it. Have a gold star and a cookie.

It is just absolute nonsense to pretend this has anything to do with Liverpool more than any other side, that Slot’s behaviour was so abhorrent rules might have to be changed because of it.

The FA announced the first trail of the use of referee bodycams towards the end of the 2022/23 season; it has been A Thing they have been considering for more than two years – and something that won’t be implemented for another few seasons if ever – not a panicked response to Slot doing a bit of a swear just over three weeks ago.

Hoj Dalot can you go?
History was made on Thursday afternoon as for the first time ever, a footballer showed frustration at a teammate.

Diogo Dalot neglecting to play in Rasmus Hojlund to probably not score at one stage in the first half against Real Sociedad rescued an otherwise drearily uninspiring game in terms of post-match discussion points. It was “unacceptable” and “criminal” and, crucially, made it possible to spawn a dozen negative Manchester United stories.

The problem is that the majority of them collapse in on themselves within a couple of paragraphs because to reiterate: players, much like people, argue all the time. It is perfectly natural.

But no, in separate Daily Mirror website headlines we are told that Ruben Amorim has ‘hit out’ at Dalot and Hojlund for ‘fighting after Europa League bust-up’, and that he ‘slammed’ them after their ‘fighting incident’.

In a world where quote marks are increasingly used to delineate something someone hasn’t actually even said, it’s more than a little weird that in neither case is ‘fighting’ in quote marks despite Amorim himself actually using the term.

But what was it the Manchester United manager said about Dalot and Hojlund “fighting”? How did he ‘hit out’ at or ‘slam’ them?

The first place Mediawatch can find which has transcribed the entirety of this vicious attack in full is the MailOnline, who say the Portuguese ‘appeared to be treading a diplomatic line when he was asked about the incident with Dalot in his post-match press conference’. And that really doesn’t bode well for this particular ‘slam’, the crucial part of which reads:

“One thing that I am sure (about) is they are really anxious to score goals and to win games. So they are doing all the best and sometimes they want the best way in that position but are not deciding the best way in their position. But it was a clear situation. Rasmus did really well, Dalot did really well, the decision was not the best. The important thing is to move on and not stay like them, like fighting and let’s move on and to the next opportunity.”

Which, it should probably be pointed out, is precisely what they did. Hojlund reacted angrily, then Manchester United had five more shots by half-time, one of which was set up by the Dane while another was taken by Dalot.

It’s almost as if footballers sometimes disagree with one another.

Relationship advice
But that simply will not do. The Manchester Evening News must instead squeeze as many clicks as possible out of this remarkably brief moment which was rendered almost immediately moot by pretending that Dalot and Hojlund have some sort of long-lasting feud and this was merely the latest instalment:

‘Rasmus Hojlund’s relationship with Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes intervention after row’

It turns out that Hojlund’s ‘up-and-down relationship’ with Dalot comprised of three moments before Thursday evening: one in which the former praised the latter for playing well despite being ill; one in which the latter praised the former for his “mentality”; and one in which Hojlund blamed Dalot for conceding a goal, Fernandes sided with Dalot and everyone just moved on.

That ‘up-and-down relationship’ certainly sounds a) substantial enough to produce a story chronicling it, and b) just like any other friendship in history in which people sometimes disagree.

The worst part is that the MEN say Amorim ‘was unconcerned by the incident’ on Thursday. Did they not realise he ‘slammed’ and ‘hit out’ at them?

Bust a move
Of course, that then spawns two more entirely risible stories from other Reach publications, whose relentless pursuit of barrel-scraping can only be admired.

‘Rasmus Hojlund’s rocky relationship with Man Utd team-mate that led to Bruno Fernandes row’ – Daily Mirror website, for whom the mask has slipped because now Amorim ‘insisted he was unconcerned by the flashpoint’. Pretty sure Mediawatch is being gaslit here but fine.

‘Bruno Fernandes’ intervention in first Rasmus Hojlund bust-up as Man Utd stars clash again’ – Daily Express website, who care not that said ‘intervention’ happened in November 2023 and basically just involved Fernandes agreeing with Dalot instead of Hojlund before they all very quickly agreed to move on.

Andre Onana and Harry Maguire overcame the implosion of their relationship so Hojlund and Dalot should be fine.

And finally…
While far, far, far from the biggest or most important aspect of this story from The Sun website

Ex-West Ham star’s Wag breaks down in tears after ‘scum’ burglars ransack home

…we cannot in good conscience accept Nicky Maynard, he of 14 league appearances for an entirely Championship West Ham side, being described as their former ‘star’.

No point going down the whole ‘Wag’ thing being deployed to describe a married couple either. But this is definitely the second-biggest story in all of football on Friday morning and it just so happens to provide an excuse to post pictures from a pretty lady’s Instagram.

Struggling PL club working on deal to appoint ex-United recruitment chief Dan Ashworth – report

West Ham are reportedly “working on a deal” to secure the services of former Manchester United sporting director Dan Ashworth.

Ashworth left United in December last year after just five months in the job.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS pursued him for weeks, eventually prying him from Newcastle but his transition to Old Trafford was not smooth.

It emerged that Ashworth did not see eye to eye with other executives, including Ratcliffe himself, on a number of issues including Erik ten Hag’s sacking and the choice of candidates to replace the Dutch coach.

A report covered by The Peoples Person also claimed that Ashworth was against redundancies in the football and scouting department – something Ratcliffe wanted as part of his bid to slash operational costs at United.

Ashworth has been working for Warwickshire Cricket Club in recent weeks, advising on performance strategy in a consultancy capacity.

David Ornstein of the Athletic recently revealed that the 54-year-old is in contention to become Arsenal’s next sporting director.

Now, Football Insider state that West Ham are also attempting to lure Ashworth to their ranks.

The Hammers are on the hunt for a new sporting director following the departure of Tim Steidten in February, after a two-and-a-half-year stint.

Steidten was held responsible for West Ham’s transfer business in the summer, in which they spent £130million on new signings.

The appointment of Ashworth at West Ham would reunite him with Graham Potter, whom he worked with successfully at Brighton and Hove Albion.

Meanwhile, United are back in action on Sunday when they host Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal at Old Trafford.

Amorim’s blunt remarks about United star “didn’t go down well” with annoyed Old Trafford chiefs – report

Members of Manchester United’s top brass were reportedly unimpressed with Ruben Amorim’s analysis that Antony lacks the physicality needed to compete in the Premier League.

Antony is enjoying a dramatic change in fortunes since leaving United in January to join Real Betis on loan. In eight games so far for the Spanish outfit, he has managed three goals and as many assists.

He scored only 12 goals in 96 appearances for United since his £85 million move from Ajax in the summer of 2022.

Amorim recently attributed Antony’s struggles in England to the physical demands of the Premier League – remarks that were not didn’t land well with the player’s entourage.

Antony’s agent – Junior Pedroso – came out in full swing, branding Amorim’s argument as “superficial” and unrealistic.

Pedroso insisted that Amorim did not give his client a run of games to prove his worth, as he also blamed United for the winger’s failures.

Now, Brazilian news outlet UOL reveal that Amorim’s remarks also ruffled a few feathers among United’s hierarchy.

It’s understood the Red Devils have already made the decision to sell Antony this summer as “there is no longer any atmosphere” for him to line up for the club again.

UOL add, “The Portuguese coach’s recent criticism of the former São Paulo player’s physical appearance did not go down well behind the scenes at the Red Devils.”

“The directors believe that the statements devalued one of the club’s assets in the transfer market.”

United hope to recoup most of the £85m they forked out to secure Antony’s services and as such, they don’t want to see him being “publicly depreciated.”

United would prefer the media coverage around the 25-year-old to be positive, in an effort to maximise the amount they’re able to acquire from permanently parting ways with him.

How to watch and follow United v Arsenal

Friday 07 March 2025 15:23

Manchester United are back in Premier League action on Sunday, with the visit of Arsenal to Old Trafford.

Three days on from a 1-1 draw away to Real Sociedad in the first leg of our Europa League last-16 tie, attention turns back to domestic matters, ahead of next Thursday’s all-important second leg at Old Trafford.

It’s a quick turnaround and with the weekend’s 16:30 GMT kick-off fast approaching, we’ve rounded up all the pre-match information you need below, from ticket details to the latest team news and more…

HOW TO WATCH AND FOLLOW

A limited number of tickets and hospitality packages remain available for Sunday’s game in M16, which will be shown live in the UK on Sky Sports.

If you won’t be at Old Trafford or are looking for a second-screen option, you can keep across the action as always via our official channels. MUTV’s Matchday Live show, starting at 15:25 GMT, will bring you exclusive pre-match build-up and post-match reaction either side of radio commentary from the Theatre of Dreams.

You can access all of that via ManUtd.com and the United App too, where our Match Centre will also have rolling updates, opinions and stats as the 90 minutes unfold. Short match highlights will be published on our platforms two hours after the final whistle, with extended versions viewable on demand from midnight.

TEAM NEWS

Harry Maguire and Manuel Ugarte missed our midweek trip to San Sebastian after picking up knocks against Fulham last weekend, with Ruben Amorim unsure if the pair will be back in the mix for Sunday’s match.

“I don’t know [if they will be available],” said the boss in his pre-match press conference, which was conducted in the immediate aftermath of Thursday’s Europa League tie in Spain. “We need to survive Sunday. The team was so tired in the last 20 minutes.”

Young striker Chido Obi is an option to play against his former club, having not been eligible to play in our recent European outing, although wing-back Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu will be out, as he serves the second of his three-match domestic suspension.

Amorim provided a hopeful update on Amad during his latest media briefing, but will not have the Ivorian or fellow long-term absentees Kobbie Mainoo, Lisandro Martinez, Mason Mount and Luke Shaw for the 16:30 GMT kick-off. Goalkeepers Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton have also been out injured of late, while centre-back Jonny Evans hasn’t played since before Christmas.

As for Arsenal, there was no fresh team news in Mikel Arteta’s press conference on Friday afternoon, although the Gunners are also set to be without several key players. Forwards Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka are working on their respective injury rehabilitations, while Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz and Takehiro Tomiyasu are out for the season.

OPPOSITION REPORT

The Gunners go into Sunday’s showdown on the back of thrashing PSV Eindhoven 7-1 in the Champions League on Tuesday, becoming the first team in the competition’s history to score seven or more goals away from home in a knockout-stage match.

It’s a result that proved a timely boost for the north Londoners, who had been prevented from finding the net in their two Premier League games prior to the trip to the Netherlands, although they do still retain the tag of the division’s best defence, on the basis of conceding the fewest goals (23) in the top flight this term.

At the other end of the pitch, Arsenal have been without their three top scorers in the league this season – Saka, Havertz and Martinelli – over recent weeks, but remain focused on closing the gap to leaders Liverpool at the top, who have carved out a 13-point advantage ahead of this weekend’s matches.

Manager Arteta has guided his men to second-placed finishes in each of the last two campaigns, and is set to take charge of his 200th Premier League encounter at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Arteta is set to meet Amorim in the dugouts for the third time this season, at the weekend.

RECENT MEETINGS

United have already faced Arsenal twice in 2024/25 – three times, if you include last summer’s pre-season friendly in Los Angeles.

Both competitive clashes have come at the Emirates Stadium, with the club from the capital winning December’s reverse league fixture 2-0, before United avenged that defeat by coming out on top in January’s dramatic Emirates FA Cup third-round tie on penalties, following a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes.

Bruno Fernandes had put Amorim’s side ahead before Diogo Dalot’s 61st-minute red card was almost instantly followed by Gabriel’s equaliser for the Gunners. Playing with 10 men for the remaining hour or so, the Reds battled hard and, after Altay Bayindir saved Martin Odegaard’s penalty in normal time, our Turkey international goalkeeper kept out Havertz’s effort in the shootout as we prevailed 5-3 on penalties.

Our game is one of 10 to be played between Saturday and Monday, as part of Premier League Matchweek 28. Here is the full list of fixtures…

TeamViewer Trending: Leah the Legend

Friday 07 March 2025 14:08

Manchester United closed the gap on Chelsea at the top of the Women’s Super League last Sunday and, once again, Leah Galton was leading the Reds’ charge, adding the second goal in a 2-0 win.

It was a match in which Marc Skinner’s team were expected to prevail.

But, shorn of leading scorer Elisabeth Terland, against a Foxes side that had already proven themselves capable of upsetting the best – via a 1-1 draw with Chelsea in December – Galton had to step up. And so she did.

Linking well with Terland’s replacement, Melvine Malard, all afternoon, she scored United’s vital second just before half-time, to add to Malard’s opener.

It was United goal no.42 for the tireless left winger, in her 152nd game for the club, and the vibe at Leigh Sports Village is that there is still much more to come, in a season that could yet prove the most successful in our team’s young history…

Leah’s a threat with both feet! Video

Leah’s a threat with both feet!

BOTH FEET | Leah Galton has netted four times in this season’s WSL: twice with her left foot, twice with her right foot…

Stand-out moment

Galton’s USP is her relentless drive down the left, both on and off the ball, and there was a brilliant two-minute blitz of her trademark persistence and power in the 4-0 win over Liverpool back in December.

Terland opened the scoring with a precise finish just after the half-hour mark, but it was Galton’s intense pressing that started the attack. She closed down Grace Fisk’s attempted clearance crisply, and forced the ball to run towards Terland, who eventually converted after another helpful contribution from Geyse.

Barely a minute later, Galton was in on goal herself, following a smart, lofted long pass by Dominque Janssen. Galton raced in behind the Liverpool back line, took one touch to steady things, and then rocketed the ball high into the roof of Teagan Micah’s net. Ryan Giggs would have been proud of that one…

In the second half, Galton returned the favour by providing an assist for Janssen, who added a fourth goal, and some deserved gloss, to the scoreline. The performances of Janssen, Clinton and Le Tissier also drew praise on the day, but Galton was right up there with that trio in terms of effect.

Performance insight

In a recent interview with the Manchester United Women matchday programme, Leah revealed that she has been working on her right foot this season, and that effort has already borne fruit.

Three of her five goals this term have been provided by that much-improved right: September’s United Women Goal of the Month (a stunning solo effort against West Ham at Old Trafford), plus an FA Cup opener at Wolves (on her 150th United appearance) and Sunday’s close-range finish against Leicester.

Some blessed with a left foot like Leah’s might be content to rely upon it, but the 30-year-old has taken a more forward-thinking approach. Her work on the training pitch – much of it done with goalkeeper Safia Middleton-Patel after team sessions are complete – sets a great example to her colleagues and is a testament to the benefits of self-betterment.

Leah said

“I think I’ve definitely improved over the years I’ve been here. I’m 30 now but still learning and that’s exciting. It’s not just like the learning has stopped and I’ve stayed the same player – I’m learning something new every day, which you can’t do in every job, so I know that’s a nice thing. And I’m even more hungry to improve now because we’re doing well, and we need to keep competing. We’re second in the league so I’m just enjoying my football and trying to do my best for the team.”

The boss said

“The one thing I love about Leah is that there is still so much more for her to give. She’s not slowing down and she’s become an even bigger goal threat. Opponents hate to play against her and I cannot wait to see what else she achieves.”

Leah made her debut in United Women’s first-ever competitive game: a 1-0 win over Liverpool in the FA Women’s League Cup in August 2018. She came on for Kirsty Hanson in the 59th minute.

Leah is also our record scorer in the WSL, with 34 goals at the time of writing, and is one of just four players to have won two pieces of silverware with United Women, along with Ella Toone, Millie Turner and Katie Zelem.

Man Utd: Amorim drops Arsenal dig with Arteta comparison shut down amid ‘good’ anti-Ratcliffe protests backed

Ruben Amorim has backed Manchester United fan protests against Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS, while he’s dropped a subtle dig at Arsenal.

The Red Devils are in a dire position on and off the pitch as they are struggling in the bottom half of the Premier League table, while co-owner Ratcliffe has sanctioned a major cost-cutting programme as he’s trying to balance the books.

Ratcliffe has had to make several unpopular decisions, with the hiking of ticket prices and mass redundancies have made the British billionaire a villain at Old Trafford and fan protests are planned.

Amorim was asked about Man Utd’s upcoming fan protests during his press conference on Friday and sided with supporters, saying it is a “good thing”.

“I think for everyone in our club it is a tough moment,” Amorim said.

READ: Manchester United implode as Amorim ‘slams’ pair with Liverpool in line for points deduction and ‘rule change’

“It is everything at the same time, but the only thing I can do and our players can do is perform well and win.

“People have the right to protest, it is a good thing to do that. It is part of our club, and everybody has a voice, but my job is to improve the team and give them something in this moment because they deserve it and they’re amazing.”

Man Utd face Arsenal this weekend and Amorim has hit out at suggestions that he is going through the same thing as Arteta.

“I don’t feel that,” Amorim responded when asked if he feels his situation is similar to what Arteta experienced at Arsenal.

“I will not have the time Arteta had – I feel that. It’s a different club.

“So we just need to survive with the players [available] on Sunday. I think it’s a different club – in that aspect, the way Arteta dealt with that is an inspiration for everybody but I will not have the time like Arteta had.”

When asked whether Harry Maguire and/or Manuel Ugarte will be fit to face Arsenal, he added: “I don’t know – Maguire we have to be careful.

“We need to survive Sunday – the team was so tired in the last 20 minutes. We have to prepare for Sunday and think about this important game for our season on Thursday.”

On Amad Diallo, he continued: “I think it is just Amad [who is out till the end of the season]. Even Amad, we will see the end of the last month [of the season].

“I have the hope to have Amad before, but we will see.”

Arteta is no ‘student of Guardiola’, Arsenal are a ‘modern and expensive Wimbledon team’

Former Man Utd defender Paul Parker thinks Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is more of a “student of knocking down brick walls” than “a student of Pep Guardiola”.

The Gunners are having a decent season in the Premier League but are once again likely to finish as runners-up for a third season in a row.

Arsenal, who have a game in hand, are currently 13 points adrift of Premier League leaders Liverpool with only 11 matches to play.

It would take a minor miracle for the Reds to collapse in a fashion that would allow the Gunners back into the title race, having lost just one Premier League match all season.

Arsenal have lost a number of key attacking players to injury in recent weeks and have turned to midfielder Mikel Merino to fill the role of a makeshift striker.

The Gunners have also used set-pieces to their advantage more than most teams this term and former Man Utd full-back Parker reckons Arsenal are “a modern and expensive Wimbledon team.”

Parker told bettingexpert.com: “Arsenal have to look at themselves and their decision to let go of Martin when they needed a striker. I hope he believed in United’s history of bringing through young players when he joined rather than joining for the money.

“Arsenal aren’t renowned for bringing through young players, although it is ironic that Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly have come through since. Arteta woke up and smelt the coffee.

“There was no point in them signing Calafiori when they had Lewis-Skelly sitting there ready to play. Skelly has the same body shape and mould that Ashley Cole had, but Arteta wanted another 6’3” centre-half to win headers instead. Arsenal are a modern and expensive Wimbledon team—it’s just height and power.

“Arteta is supposed to be a student of Pep Guardiola. A student of football. Not a student of knocking down brick walls.”

Arsenal travel to Man Utd in the Premier League on Sunday and Parker reckons Chido Obi now “has to play” for the Red Devils after a couple of promising appearances.

Parker added: “Chido Obi has to play. Right now, Højlund is being destroyed, and you have to question how the rest of the team feel playing with him. He’s really, really struggling.

“Ryan Giggs was 17 when I turned up to United, and he was playing. Martin is going to want as many games as possible. This is the time to grab things and make it happen. They can’t wait until he’s 20 to give him a chance.”

Parker reckons Man Utd are likely to get a result against Arsenal over the weekend, he continued: “United this season tend to wake up for big games like this. United have a chance because Arsenal haven’t got great legs, and they don’t move the ball quickly.

“They play in front of you and don’t try to play in behind. Maguire will keep heading the ball. That type of game suits him because he can sit deep and defend the box.

“Arsenal don’t look like a team sitting second. They’re nowhere near it. Arteta has become very negative. They can’t create. Ødegaard makes you dizzy with all that spinning around he does on the ball.”
