Arsenal ‘bottlejobs’ have been ‘exposed’ by Liverpool brilliance; Amorim must drop three Man Utd stars

Arsenal ‘bottled their title challenge before it even began’ as Liverpool conspiracy is nonsense. Plus Man Utd must drop three stars who are failing to help out Rasmus Hojlund…

Inevitably bitter bottlejobs
Sixteen points clear(pre Utd v AFC)

Unstoppable. Relentless. Inevitable. Liverpool Football Club are marching towards their 20th league title, and there’s not a soul in the Premier League who can stop them. But while Arnes Army continues to brush aside everything in their path, something even more hilariously predictable has emerged in the background — a tidal wave of bitter whining, outlandish conspiracy theories, and sheer desperation from rival fans.
The Premier League has always been dramatic, but what we’re witnessing this season is utterly unprecedented. With Liverpool establishing a monstrous lead, the conversation has shifted from “Can anyone catch them?” to “How can we discredit them?” Rival fans, scrambling for anything to cling to, have descended into full-blown delusion — and their favorite weapon? Blaming VAR and the officials for Liverpool’s success.

Week after week, the narrative grows more laughable. Every decision that marginally favours Liverpool — whether it’s a tight offside, a handball, or a penalty — is instantly plastered across social media with cries of “corruption” and “Premier League scriptwriters at it again!” It doesn’t matter if the same calls are made for other teams; in the eyes of rival fans, Liverpool are being carried to the title.

The irony? Liverpool are obliterating the league with the same intensity and brilliance they displayed in their 2019/20 title-winning season — and if anything, VAR has handed them far more misfortune than fortune. Dubious ref decisions , soft penalties against them, clear penalties not given( yes UAE employee Mohamed Oliver I’m talking about you)  and bizarre refereeing inconsistencies have plagued them throughout the campaign. But instead of acknowledging their superiority, rival fans have instead concocted wild theories about the Premier League “desperately wanting Liverpool to win the title.”

The truth is far simpler — Liverpool are just miles better than everyone else. Arne has tweaked a monstrous winning machine, capable of dismantling any team in the league. The 16-point gap isn’t down to favorable refereeing — it’s down to a relentless, ruthless, and magnificent football team led by a world-class manager. Oh , and coming up against Bottlejob FC LOL

Not only have Arsenal bottled their title challenge before it even began, but they’ve now resorted to the lowest, most pathetic form of coping: blaming VAR, referees, and the Premier League scriptwriters for Liverpool’s dominance.

It’s genuinely laughable. Every time Liverpool get a decision — whether it’s a tight offside or a penalty — Arsenal fans flood social media with cries of “corruption!”, “the league is rigged for Liverpool!”, and the most delusional of all: “the Premier League wants Liverpool to win it.”

But it’s not just the fans. Even Mikel Arteta, Arsenal’s supposed tactical genius, has subtly joined the pity parade. His passive-aggressive digs in post-match interviews about “teams getting fortunate decisions” are nothing more than veiled shots at Liverpool. Deep down, Arteta knows exactly what’s happening — his team has been exposed. OOOH  we have injuries , so do every other team, get over it.

Again. Liverpool, a team once written off as “in transition,” have rebuilt, reloaded, and roared back to the top without skipping a beat. Meanwhile, Arsenal are still mentally scarred from their capitulation and now resort to tinfoil hat conspiracies to cope.

The irony is delicious. This time last year, Arsenal fans were writing open letters about “how football was finally coming home to North London”. Now? They’re reduced to refreshing the VAR thread on Twitter, desperately hoping for a moment of controversy to discredit Liverpool’s dominance.

But hey — if rival fans need to cling to conspiracy theories and VAR delusions to cope, who are we to stop them? In a few months’ time, Liverpool will lift their 20th league title — and the collective meltdown from the rest of the league will be just as glorious to witness as the trophy itself.

Enjoy it, Reds. Their tears taste sweeter than ever.

Why Ruben Amorim’s Man Utd isn’t working…
Watched an interesting tactical breakdown earlier of why Amorim’s United are failing so well, and the continued blame being shovelled at Højlund prompted me to send this in.

The TL;DR is, it’s not particularly his fault.

The video, showed how the movements are supposed to go, and where they are breaking down in the team. But suffice it to say, the principle of the tactic is for the wing backs and 10s to drive forwards to create space and then play the ball in to the 9 for a one touch finish.

Højlund is making his runs, he’s doing his part, but as we saw with Dalot against Real Sociedad (and in so many other games), the issue is the failure to make that pass and the runs from the 10s into the gaps.

There was an interesting couple of screens that show the passes by the wing backs and Bruno, in recent games. Literally none were played into the striker or the box generally. It is massively stark. They are passing literally anywhere else, and usually backwards, after they’ve laboured their way up the pitch.

The issue isn’t that the striker isn’t making the runs, as he actually is. But even if he wasn’t, still play the ball to where he should be so he can learn get comfortable that the ball is coming. He has the pace and strength to get to them. At the moment, he’s getting maybe one touch in the box per game.

The most irritating thing is that man for man there is no way you’re saying Sporting is a better side than United, even with the crisis state as it is. I don’t think *on paper* you’d say it of Forest either. But what both do have are players doing their jobs, and following the instructions. As a result, the team is far superior.

Is it Amorim’s fault? Not entirely, but he has a part. The manager can’t make the decisions for the players once they step on the pitch. But he can drill them on the training field and refuse to play them or take them off if they’re not following his instructions when they step over the white line. If Dalot or Garnacho or Bruno refuse to play the simple square pass to the free striker over and over, they shouldn’t be playing the next match, simple as that. Even if it means playing kids. At the moment, he’s tolerating these abject performances and so nothing is changing. Only some players get the stick.

As pundits have said, Højlund at Arsenal would be scoring a hatfull because they would be feeding him on repeat.

And yes, Rashford and Antony are both doing good work in exactly the areas of the pitch that United are completely failing in right now. As was Mainoo when he played there once. So naturally, they should all be binned.

More Man Utd musings…
– There was a point last week where, despite United not having played football in days, the top 4 stories at the Guardian football coverage and indeed your hallowed front page had them front and centre. For a team that is 12th or whatever, it’s just weird. That environment would break most.

– Lots coming out of Mainoo’s ‘camp’ that he wants big bucks or he’s off. Obviously sad as he’s a local lad and had been rumoured to be a good egg, but this is crucial for INEOS to say no. Kobbie is pure potential. He’s a central midfielder with a questionable engine who has played 90 minutes of senior football a handful of times. And he wants top level wages.

– If Garnacho can sort his decision making, he could make it at the very top level. But nothing in the last 12 months hints at even a modicum of development there. It’s shocking really. Between him and Dalot it’s like a vacuum of footballing intelligence.

– Remember Luke Shaw? It’s been over a year since he’s played for his club.

– Thursday night was yet another example of why I’m hard on the Amor-IN camp. Despite having to field Dalot, a geriatric Casemiro in a two with Bruno (!?) and having Hojlund’s twin brother who can’t play football up top, United still utterly dominated and should have been out of sight. It’s not happening at the moment because there are only about 3 fit players and they’re not very good in this system.

– Will the powers at be ever fix penalties? Statistically a 80% chance of a goal, given for the smallest infractions these days. VAR took literal minutes to spot that one. And yes, by the letter of the law it’s a handball so well done chaps, but that law is idiotic. Penalties are ruining football, and no one can change my mind. A penalty should only be for a denial of clear goal scoring opportunity, at the decision of the ref. Nothing else. Touch a toe of a player heading towards the corner flag? Not an 80% goal. Ball bounces into your finger accidentally? Not an 80% goal. It’s plainly broken.

Forest trophy parade
Dear 365,

Will Forest fans be writing in to jubilantly celebrate a Fake Cup Final win against Citeh? Isn’t that how it’s supposed to work? Or does Nuno have to first blow £750m over ten transfer windows 🤔
Will be interesting to see if Forest fans get out the 2002 Vintage Dom Pérignon to celebrate (although one suspects they likely have higher standards than this). Interesting that Nuno looks likely to achieve Top 4 CL football without any “processes”, fake pickpocketing stunts or £65m ashtrays. Forest finished *59 points* behind Citeh last season recall, and are beating them and going for CL at Citeh’s expense. Their entire summer squad refresh of 9 new players cost less than one Declan Rice! And Nuno isn’t paid £15m a season is he? Weird.
Meanwhile, we witness certain mediocre frauds clearly regressing, at great expense, and we are told it’s “generational”. Ok! Yuuum that Kool-aid taaaaasty!
Stewie Griffin (What phase is Nuno in? Why didn’t the Forest MC play “Humble” by Kendrick??? Congrats Forest, excellent season)

Frank needs time away from spotlight
Dear Con Kan (or should I call you Frank?)

The main reason there’s been no mention of how well Frank (you) is doing is because it’s the Championship, and 365 doesn’t give a lot of mention to that (for good or bad – that’s another conversation).

The negative press before was mainly because he seemed to show the worst traits of an ex player – mainly getting jobs on name as opposed to actual talent.

I think he (you) will benefit from some time out of the spotlight anyway to, you know, actually learn the job.

Hope everything goes well anyway – he (you) seems to be doing quite well!
Craig, Glasgow

P.S. I’d probably spend less time googling him (yourself) – it’s a bit weird.

Con Kan asks what the beef is with Lampard, and here is my Frank take.  I claim no special knowledge or info other than being a longtime F365 reader.

To briefly sum up from my perspective: He was parachuted into one of the biggest jobs in football on the scantiest evidence, and after failing to impress twice got a further bite at the cherry.  Whilst having vocal cheerleaders. So I guess it’s a reaction to that.

It’s great that he’s now garnering some respect and building his coaching reputation, probably needed a lot more of that at the start.  But the fact we are talking about him and not one of the other 23 championship managers is part and parcel of the entire issue.
Collin (the less we talk about my team right now, the better) Hack

RE Con Kan – how many articles do you see on most football websites talking about Championship managers? Even ones doing well?

That’s why people dislike Frank Lampard, his sycophants seem to think he should be lauded for every single positive he does. Just because he was a world class footballer does not give him the right to have articles written about him left and right.

Where are the articles about Regis Le Bris? Liam Manning? Tony Mowbray? Even Daniel Farke?

I’d suggest if you want reporting on the Championship you perhaps go to websites that report on it regularly, rather than those that focus on the Prem and other top leagues. The EFL website probably has its fair share of Lampard articles that you’re so desperate to read. Or write some for the Lampard fan club you must be a member of.

“It’s hard to see but I see it”: Amorim pinpoints two United stars as catalysts behind improved form

While on-pitch results continue to be dire for Manchester United, Ruben Amorim has put up a brave face ahead of Sunday’s Premier League game against Arsenal by claiming there have been a lot of small improvements which bode well for the future.

Speaking to Premier League Productions (via the official website), the Portuguese tactician revealed that both Joshua Zirkzee and Bruno Fernandes are among the most improved players since his arrival.

He also claimed that the centre-backs are also coming to grips with how to operate in his 3-4-3 system which has pleased him a lot.

Leny Yoro carrying the ball into midfield is a prime example of what Amorim wants to see from his backline. Also, the way the team remained positive despite going down to 10 men against Ipswich Town to eventually claim the win was another point he raised.

Amorim sees improvement

“In the small things in our game, I see improvement. It’s hard to see but I see it. I think we are improving in the last two games, for example, the way we have possession. Our central defenders are playing in a different way, more confident.

“And, if they play well, our team will play better. I think some players are improving individually. Josh, I think is improving, in changing, a little bit, the position.

“We are trying to find a better space for Bruno but sometimes you want him, yes, everywhere as he’s really important for us. Even against Ipswich, we suffered a goal and we continued to play the same way and I feel, in these small details, I feel that the team believes a little bit more.

“The rest, I think, it’s hard to see things in this season. It’s more here in Carrington, the way we are training, the intensity, and we are trying to find a way to improve the team.”

But these small changes are certainly not having a positive impact on the results with the Red Devils losing 10 out of 25 since the former Sporting boss took charge.

And the 40-year-old admitted that he is not too happy with how the matches have panned out but he is building a solid base ahead of next season.

Bodes well ahead of next season

“In terms of the results, it’s bad. Also the performances are not improving a lot, to be honest. But the good thing is that we are learning a lot. We are changing a lot of things but you cannot see it. Here in Carrington, the way we want to do things. I’m understanding the players and doing, in my head, what is the future of the squad.

“And that can be really important next year, but there is also a risk, when you are planning and doing and thinking to the future, you have to pay attention to the present. And the present is really hard in the moment because the results and the performances are not there.”

Whether he is thinking too far ahead remains to be seen. There have been rumours that he might be ready to quit in the summer while he has made it clear to his inner circle that he should not have joined mid-season.

Hopefully, these small changes will be in effect against the Gunners and Real Sociedad in the second leg with fans desperate for some quality.

Liverpool, Man Utd make ‘offers worth more than £50m’ for La Liga star who is showing role ‘concern’

Liverpool and Man Utd have made offers for Barcelona midfielder Gavi ahead of the summer transfer window, according to reports.

The Reds have had an amazing season in the Premier League so far with Arne Slot’s side leading the Premier League by 16 points to second-placed Arsenal, who face Man Utd on Sunday.

Slot could hardly have wished for a better start as the new Liverpool manager with the Reds reaching the League Cup final and into the last-16 of the Champions League.

The only real mark on his record this season was their 1-0 defeat to Championship strugglers Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup but Slot has had a few off-field issues to deal with.

Man Utd, meanwhile, are having a complete sh*t-show of a season with Ruben Amorim’s side currently 15th in the Premier League table, having won just five of their 16 league matches under the Portuguese head coach.

Both sides are looking at improving their side ahead of the summer and reports in Spain claim Barcelona midfielder Gavi has caught the eye of both the Premier League sides.

The young Spain international ‘has two offers from the Premier League on the table, both worth more than 60 million euros (£50m)’ and his ‘current situation in the team has caused some concern among those around him’.

The La Masia graduate ‘is not happy with the minutes he is getting in recent games, especially since the arrival of Dani Olmo , who has taken his place in the midfield’.

Liverpool and Man Utd are understood to be the two teams who have made the offers for Gavi with ‘both teams are looking to strengthen their midfield with young, promising players, and Gavi fits that profile perfectly.’

But a deal looks like a long shot for both Liverpool and Man Utd with neither Barcelona or the player interested in doing a deal as things stand.

The report adds:

‘For Barca, the player is not  transferable. The Barca board has no intention of selling one of its greatest talents, unless Gavi himself requests his departure. The club sees the youth player as a key piece for the future and is confident that, with time, he will regain his role in the team.

‘Although the Premier League offers are tempting, Gavi is determined to stay at Barca. The young midfielder knows that, at a club like Barca, opportunities can come at any time, and he does not want  to waste the trust that the club has placed in him. In addition, his love  for the Barca shirt and his desire to succeed at the Camp Nou are stronger than any financial offer.’

Man Utd sent major long-term ‘problem’ warning as Merson makes ‘best point of season’

Arsenal legend Paul Merson insists that Man Utd “won’t be anywhere near the biggest club in the world” in 15 to 20 years if they continue to struggle on the pitch.

The Red Devils are having a nightmare campaign under Ruben Amorim with the new Portuguese head coach struggling to have an impact after replacing Erik ten Hag in November.

Man Utd, who play Arsenal on Sunday, have won just five of their 16 Premier League matches since Amorim became manager with Man Utd currently 15th in the table.

The Red Devils have been largely on the decline since Sir Alex Ferguson left Old Trafford in 2013 with poor recruitment and decisions by the club’s hierarchy resulting in the current mess at the club.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS were seen as potential saviours when they completed a deal to buy 27.7 per cent of Man Utd last February but the new co-owners are currently making the Glazers look good.

A huge cost-cutting process has meant things off the pitch have also been negative and Merson reckons that, if Man Utd carry on their current trajectory, they will lose their status as one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Merson said on Sky Sports: “They’ve got to be careful, Man United, because we say they’re one of the biggest clubs in the world, and that reason is because of 20-odd years ago, when they were successful.

“Because the Premier League goes all around the world these young kids who are growing up, who are seven, eight years of age now around the world, they will support the team that are winning, and that’s where it starts.

“If you’re seven or eight years of age now and living anywhere around the world you’re not picking Man United as your Premier League team, and this is going to be a problem in 15-20 years time.

“They’ll get caught up and they won’t be anywhere near the biggest club in the world then…seven, eight, nine-year-olds round the world, their first team they start supporting is the team that’s winning games.”

Reacting to Merson’s comments on Man Utd, former Premier League striker Clinton Morrison added: “That’s the best point you’ve made all season.”

Mikael Silvestre is “extremely worried” about Man Utd with the former Red Devils defender unable to see “the light” at the end of the tunnel for Amorim’s side.

Silvestre told yaysweepstakes.com: “It’s extremely worrying because you don’t see the light. You don’t see the light on the pitch, you don’t see the light financially because you would want to help the manager as much as you want.

“It’s worrying when you hear that the club would consider selling players like Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo – these are the players that you want to keep hold of. It’s going to take a long, long time to turn Manchester United around.”

Man Utd: Potential Amorim replacement ‘wants to take two’ players on his ‘new adventure’ at Old Trafford

Xavi is looking to take two Barcelona players with him to Man Utd if the Red Devils decide to sack Ruben Amorim, according to reports.

The Red Devils are having a terrible campaign with INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe making the decision to sack Erik ten Hag and replace him with Amorim in November.

Man Utd are currently 15th in the Premier League ahead of their Sunday fixture against Arsenal and Amorim is already coming under severe pressure to turn around results and performances.

Results under Amorim have been worse than Ten Hag’s time at Old Trafford with Man Utd winning just five of his first 16 Premier League matches in charge.

There have been some rumours that Amorim could face the sack if things don’t improve but widespread reports indicate the Portuguese head coach will definitely be in place until at least the end of the season.

But, if things don’t improve, things could line up nicely for former Barcelona manager Xavi to take over with reports in Spain recently claiming he is the man that Man Utd are lining up if Amorim continues on a downward spiral.

Reports in Spain claim that Xavi ‘wants to take two Barca players on his new adventure’ to Man Utd as the Red Devils and Serie A side Juventus ‘show serious interest’ in the legendary midfielder.

And the ex-Barcelona boss is looking to take Fermín Lopez and Andreas Christensen to his new club as they ‘were key in his system and Xavi is confident that they can be fundamental pieces in his next team’.

Fermin is no longer an undisputed starter, like he was under Xavi, while Christensen is yet to make his first appearance under Hansi Flick as injuries have plagued the Denmark international.

The report adds:

‘Although Barca do not want to lose players such as Fermin Lopez and Andreas Christensen, they know that offers from clubs such as Manchester United or Juventus would be difficult to refuse. In addition, the club’s financial situation could force the board to consider the possibility of selling some of its assets to balance the books.

‘In the coming weeks, negotiations are expected to progress. In the meantime, Xavi will continue working on his planning for next season, knowing that the future of Fermin and Christensen could be linked to his own.’

Man Utd have very little to play for in the Premier League for the rest of the season but Mikael Silvestre has set them a target of finishing in the top half of the table.

Silvestre told yaysweepstakes.com: “The target for the remainder of the season has to be to finish as high in the Premier League table as possible. It’s got to be to try and get in the top 10. Top 10 is realistic, but I’m not even sure that will happen.

“Manchester United are conceding more goals from set pieces than any other team and they’ve been very fragile at home as well. When teams come to Old Trafford now, they’re not telling themselves this is going to be tough.

“They’re thinking, we can have a go and get three points. Not even a draw. We can get the three points. The dynamic has to change. If they can improve and get more clean sheets, because you can only build something positive if you stop leaking goals, hopefully Manchester United can go into next season knowing how to defend.

“If the can fix the defence, they can then focus on the offensive part of the game. But if they can’t defend properly, they can’t attack properly.”

7 clearances, 5 aerial battles won: United Youth Cup winner continues to dazzle in League Two

Manchester United’s loanees had another busy afternoon and evening of action yesterday.

After scoring his second senior goal midweek, Rhys Bennett once again started for Fleetwood Town in their 1-1 draw with Port Vale.

He made seven clearances in the match and completed two tackles.

The 21 year old made one vital intervention as he made a last-ditch tackle as the last man to stop an almost certain goal for the visitors that was well-appreciated by the home crowd.

He won three out of his six ground duels and five out of his ten aerial battles in a combative performance that has come to define his excellent spell at Fleetwood.

Bennett also completed 70% of his passes and four out of his nine long ball attempts.

Ethan Williams was also given a start for Cheltenham Town in their disappointing 0-1 home defeat to Colchester United.

He played 61 minutes of action and in despite of his recent impactful form, he only completed five passes during his entire time on the pitch.

Williams did complete one key pass but only one of his four crosses were met by a teammate.

In spite of his lack of involvement in the match, he proved he still carries a danger at all times as he unluckily hit the woodwork.

Marcus Rashford came on in the 68th minute against Brentford and helped his side to an impressive 1-0 victory.

He couldn’t manage any shots on target in the match and only completed four passes during the whole time he was on the pitch.

The 27 year old won two out of his three ground duels and also made two clearances to help his side see out the match, even if he was rather invisible from an attacking perspective.

Joe Hugill was sent on for the final 24 minutes of Carlisle United’s 0-1 loss to Harrogate Town.

He didn’t manage any shots on goal and only completed four passes in the game.

Hugill also completed one ground and aerial duel in his afternoon’s work.

Tyrell Malacia played the final minute of PSV Eindhoven’s 2-1 win over Heerenveen.

James Nolan played 70 minutes for Inverness Caledonian Thistle as they beat Dumbarton 1-0 with a late winner.

Man Utd eye shock move for Championship player as Amorim ‘wants Red Devils star out now’

Man Utd could look to sign Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Aynsley Pears in the summer transfer window amid Andre Onana rumours, according to reports.

Ruben Amorim’s side are having a terrible time this season with the Red Devils currently 15th in the Premier League table after 27 matches ahead of their clash against Arsenal on Sunday.

Things have got worse at Old Trafford since Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag in the Old Trafford dugout with Man Utd only winning five of their 16 Premier League matches since the Portuguese head coach arrived.

Onana has started every Premier League match this season for Man Utd with the Red Devils conceding 39 goals in 27 matches in the league this term.

The Cameroon international has made a number of brilliant saves this season but there have been reports that staff members are worried about his recent form.

One report in December even claimed that Amorim ‘wants him out now’ as Man Utd look for potential replacements ahead of the summer transfer window.

And now The Sun claim that Man Utd could make a shock move for Blackburn Rovers stopper Pears in the summer as they look for a homegrown goalkeeper.

The Sun reports:

‘Manchester United are looking for a home-grown keeper to join their squad next season — with Blackburn’s Aynsley Pears on the shortlist.

‘Specialist scout Tony Coton has been watching the experienced Championship stopper.

‘Man Utd squad is worse than Tottenham despite £553million MORE in transfer spending in last decade, says Gary Neville
Pears, 26, was previously at Middlesbrough  like dad Stephen, who ironically started his career at Old Trafford.

‘United want a seasoned pro to compete for Andre Onana’s No 1 slot, though realistically he would be a reserve and play in cup ties.

‘Turkey’s Altay Bayindir has been overlooked by both Ruben Amorim and Erik ten Hag, while Tom Heaton’s time may be up.’

Former Man Utd defender Gary Pallister has encouraged Onana to try and “dominate the box” if he wants to improve at Old Trafford.

Pallister said: “I don’t like goalkeepers that take a chance! I’m an old-school centre-half and a lot of them would be asking, ‘what’s the goalkeeper doing?’ if they saw Andre Onana do some of the stuff he does with the ball at his feet.

“That being said, he is comfortable on the ball, but I’d prefer my goalkeeper to stop the ball going into the back of the net first and foremost. If you’re bad with the ball at your feet in this day and age then you’re probably not going to survive in a Premier League side, but I’d still prefer my goalkeeper to dominate the box, be decisive and make good saves.”

On whether he’d prefer having David de Gea in the Man Utd side, Pallister replied: “I think David de Gea was released too early. I think he’s a very good goalkeeper, and I for one certainly wouldn’t have got rid of him.”

Manchester United Women made their way into the semi-finals of the FA Cup after beating a spirited Sunderland side 3-1.

United started well and Celin Bizet came close with a dipping volley that just drifted wide of the goal.

The fans at the Leigh Sports Village did not have long to wait as Leah Galton gave the Red Devils the lead after just seven minutes.

After some great work down the right by the busy Bizet, she beat the defender for skill and dinked in a delightful cross that was headed home by Galton to give Marc Skinner’s side the lead.

Galton almost returned the favour minutes later when it was her turn to maraud down the left wing and she picked out Bizet with a sublime cross, but the Norwegian’s effort landed on top of the net.

United kept up the pressure on their second division rivals and they got their reward in added time in the first half.

A drilled in a corner from Gabby George was expertly met by Maya Le Tissier whose header found the back of the net from close range. It was the perfect end to the half that put the holders in charge of their quarter final tie.

On 51 minutes, Hinata Miyazawa delivered a great ball into the box that Galton turned wide after stretching a little too much to reach the ball.

In a rare attack forward, Sunderland got themselves back into the match on 70 minutes.

Katy Watson made a good run down the right before crossing the ball into the box. Louise Griffiths attempted to control the ball along the ground but lost it. Fortunately for her, the attempted clearance by the United defence ricocheted back onto her legs and beyond Phallon Tullis-Joyce, who was left helpless and conceded a rare goal.

United responded well though and Anna Sandberg’s lofted cross was well met by fellow substitute Rachel Williams but she could only head her effort right at the keeper, Demi Lambourne.

The Red Devils continued to push on to kill off the game and they were finally able to in the 91st minute in spite of some valiant resistance from their opponents.

United’s excellent wing play was on display all evening and a great driving run and cross from the dangerous Bizet was headed home by the unmarked Ella Toone, who drifted into the box unnoticed by the tiring Sunderland defenders.

The final whistle blew shortly after and the Red Devils were safely into the semi-final of the competition that they won last season and will be dreaming of doing the same this time around.

Ruben Amorim says a lot of unseen work is being undertaken at Carrington in a bid to improve the performances of his Manchester United team.

In an interview with Premier League Productions to preview Sunday’s home game with Arsenal, the head coach is seeing some signs of encouragement and will hope these will become more and more evident over time.

Speaking before the 1-1 draw with Real Sociedad in the Europa League round-of-16 first leg, he named Joshua Zirkzee and Bruno Fernandes as two players who are adapting well to the demands, and also revealed an increased level of confidence among the centre-backs is pleasing to witness.

Meanwhile, the Portuguese is also plotting for how things will look beyond this season, as he strives to bring success to Old Trafford.

“In terms of the results, it’s bad,” responded Amorim, when asked how things were going. “Also the performances are not improving a lot, to be honest.

“But the good thing is that we are learning a lot.

When asked if he could pinpoint positive aspects to what he is seeing, the boss went into specifics by explaining how the centre-backs are key to making his system work.

“In the small things in our game, I see improvement,” he explained. “It’s hard to see but I see it.

“I think we are improving in the last two games [before Real Sociedad], for example, the way we have possession.

“Even against Ipswich, we suffered a goal and we continued to play the same way and I feel, in these small details, I feel that the team believes a little bit more. The rest, I think, it’s hard to see things in this season. It’s more here in Carrington, the way we are training, the intensity, and we are trying to find a way to improve the team.”
