Arteta holding Arsenal back with robotic football as Manchester United better in draw

There are a great many things that Manchester United have got wrong over the past 12 years, but for the neutral, becoming this frightfully boring is perhaps the greatest of their crimes. We have seen community walking football games for elderly men played with more intensity than United managed here.

But Mikel Arteta needs to be careful not to fall into the same trap – not just for entertainment value, but because his side’s odd shift into an overly-conservative approach is hurting their performances.

You’d think that after scoring seven in midweek, Arsenal would be brimming with brio and willing to come out of the blocks against a United side whose abject mediocrity is beyond well-established by this point. Instead, Arsenal played their own large part to create a somnolent atmosphere inside Old Trafford until Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring with a direct free kick in first-half stoppage time.

Arteta’s side were consistently better at making ingress into the opposition box, but their lack of any kind of quality touch having got there left Andre Onana with little of real note to do, Declan Rice’s eventual equaliser being unstoppably smashed beyond his reach.

Wrestling fans are fond of chanting ‘booooring, booooring’ at matches that don’t take their fancy, and we’d like to hear it more from football grounds, too. But in this instance, that actually suited United; if it had been an out-and-out slugfest, you would surely have favoured Arsenal to triumph.

Yet this season, Arteta has been bizarrely unwilling to let them off the leash. Where before they looked like a side who had taken the best of what the manager had learned under Pep Guardiola before and put his own spin on it.

We have, in all fairness, seen that on occasion this season: against West Ham, against Crystal Palace, against Manchester City themselves.

But all too often, Arsenal instead look like they have taken the heavily systematised football of City and strictly imposed it on a team of players who are afraid to deviate from their instructions. On those days, there is no sense of spontaneity or free thought about their play whatsoever.

For all the noise around their lack of a proper good centre-forward, that has been a far bigger issue for Arsenal, and the reason they lag so far behind league leaders Liverpool. Arne Slot’s side have faced similar criticisms about their centre-forward options but have thrived. Just to provide a helpful counterpoint, Manchester City have arguably the best striker in the world, yet have struggled.

The loss of Bukayo Saka offers a very reasonable excuse for that: the injured winger has not played since before Christmas but remains joint-second in the Premier League’s assist charts, with 10 (behind Mohamed Salah, of course). Arsenal’s average xG has dropped by a third in his absence, from 1.72 per game to 1.29 coming into this trip to Old Trafford.

Arsenal lack anybody even approaching Saka’s quality to pick up the slack – but all the more reason for Arteta to free up a little more license in the final third. He has the best defence in the Premier League, and less to fear than any other manager about the downsides of taking off that handbrake.

Arteta would no doubt point out that Rice’s goal was a perfect example of why he does things the way he does: a complete training ground move that resulted in the midfielder arriving unmarked into the box to thrash into the far corner.

The question is whether Arsenal might have won this game – and others like them – if they were able to shift into something a little less robotic when the occasion calls for it.

Playing three Premier League sides, in three iconic stadiums, will be a great advert for the quality of the league.

“United enjoy a huge following in the US and I know they will be incredibly excited about the prospect of watching and engaging with the team, when they return this summer.”

The club has played pre-season fixtures in the US for the last two years but will compete in the Summer Series for the first time ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

The final Summer Series fixture will take place at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, in Atlanta, against Everton, marking United’s first-ever game in the US state of Georgia.

Jason Wilcox, technical director of Manchester United, said: “The weeks leading up to a new Premier League season is always an exciting time for United players and fans alike, and we enjoy spending that period in the US, taking advantage of world-class training facilities and stadiums, and engaging with fans.

“Playing other teams from the Premier League provides the players with an opportunity to gain valuable playing time against top opposition, and for our passionate fans to see the action live at three of the most iconic stadiums in North America.”

Man Utd edge all-time Premier League combined XI with Arsenal; no Bergkamp, Ferdinand, Cantona

An Arsenal and Manchester United combined XI consisting of current players would be pretty one-sided and injuries in the Gunners attack would see some pretty undeserving players included.

With that in mind, here instead is our all-time combined XI of Arsenal and Man Utd players from the Premier League era. Unsurprisingly, every player was managed in their pomp by Arsene Wenger or Sir Alex Ferguson in this reminder of a time when these two clubs really did rule the roost.

GK: Peter Schmeichel (Manchester United)
The debate is obviously between Peter Schmeichel and David Seaman, though it was Jens Lehmann in between the sticks when Arsenal went unbeaten in 2003/04.

Schmeichel is an icon and the greatest goalkeeper in Premier League history.

RB: Gary Neville (Manchester United)
The most decorated right-back in Premier League history, Gary Neville is widely regarded as the best in his position. Kyle Walker will have something to say about that, while Trent Alexander-Arnold will surely become a non-negotiable if he stays at Liverpool.

Neville was an old school full-back, Alexander-Arnold is as modern as they come and Walker is somewhere in the middle. It is a fun debate to have, for sure.

CB: Nemanja Vidic (Manchester United)
Fernando Torres did make this guy eat grass on a few occasions but that does not diminish his achievements for Man Utd.

Nemanja Vidic was as hard as nails and had the look in his eye that made strikers think he literally wanted to kill you. He probably did.

CB: Tony Adams (Arsenal)
The centre-back options are strong. No Rio Ferdinand feels wrong and for me, it was a toss-up between him and Vidic. Jaap Stam was obviously in with a shout as well, while Sol Campbell definitely deserves a mention, even if he was not under consideration, which says everything you need to know about the aforementioned Man Utd players.

And Tony Adams, of course, who gets in next to Vidic. That would be a rough day in the office for any striker.

LB: Ashley Cole (Arsenal)
Ashley Cole is undoubtedly the greatest left-back in Premier League history. Ex-Man Utd players Dennis Irwin and Patrice Evra are probably second and third.

CM: Patrick Vieira (Arsenal)
The captain of the Arsenal invincibles is arguably the greatest midfielder in Premier League history and is one of a few players to comfortably walk into this combined XI.

CM: Roy Keane (Manchester United)
Vieira and Roy Keane had some iconic battles against each other but just imagine them as a midfield pairing. What a spine this team has.

Again, there is no questioning Keane’s inclusion. He played 479 times for the Red Devils, winning seven Premier League titles and four FA Cups.

The question is, who captains this side out of Keane and Vieira? Probably the guy who lifted more trophies…

CM: Paul Scholes (Manchester United)
Bloody ridiculous midfield options, yet these three feel pretty nailed on. Emmanuel Petit, Cesc Fabregas and Eric Djemba-Djemba obviously deserve an honourable mention, mind.

Scholes of Manchester hit a tree in training once and that’s all there is to say.

RW: Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United)
The last Premier League player to win the Ballon d’Or before Rodri’s triumph last year, Cristiano Ronaldo scored 66 goals in his last three seasons at Man Utd before joining Real Madrid in 2009.

Ronaldo is perhaps not the greatest Premier League player ever but he is the greatest player to play in the Premier League.

The Portuguese legend came back to Man Utd for a second spell, which was very interesting, to say the least.

LW: Thierry Henry (Arsenal)
Often shifted out to the left in all-time Premier League XIs, Arsenal legend Thierry Henry gets the same treatment here.

Now he is the greatest Premier League player ever – although he did not have the greatest individual season ever.

ST: Wayne Rooney (Manchester United)
Arsenal fans will be furious to see no Dennis Bergkamp and some Man Utd fans will be angry King Eric Cantona has been snubbed as well.

Rooney feels like a must, though. There is no one similar in world football right now. That’s enough of a reason for us to get in. There are a good few reasons, but this is the most compelling and an agenda that needs pushed.

Pictures: United fans stage massive anti-Glazer protest before kick-off vs. Arsenal

Manchester United fans staged a protest against the Glazer family before their Sunday meeting with Arsenal at Old Trafford.

A few days ago, the United supporter group ‘The 1958,” announced demonstration plans in a statement.

The group urged fans to don black outfits in an effort to underscore their message to those in charge. In their statement, The 1958 insisted the club is “slowly dying,” with the Glazers squarely to blame.

Participants were requested to gather at the Tollgate Pub at 3.15pm and march to the Trinity Monument before proceeding to the Munich Tunnel at Old Trafford.

Even before the protest kicked off, banners started to appear on railings around the stadium.

According to Manchester Evening News, a “massive crowd” gathered outside the Tollgate with banners. There were chants of “It’s your debt, not ours” and “we want Glazers out.”

United have been owned by the Glazers since a leveraged buyout in May 2005, which saddled the club with over £500 million in debt.

Even before the Glazers’ takeover, they faced strong opposition from United supporters, who were outraged at the idea of the previously debt-free and financially stable club being burdened with massive debt.

Discontent remains high even after Sir Jim Ratcliffe acquired a minority stake last year and assumed operational control of the Red Devils.

United have lost more than £300m over the past three seasons and recently announced there would be  up to 200 further redundancies, having axed 250 staff last summer.

The latest financial figures shared in February revealed that United forked out £14.5m to part ways with Erik ten Hag, his coaching team and former sporting director Dan Ashworth.

The numbers also highlighted that the club’s debt interest payments in the last six months summed to £18.8m.

Confirmed United XI vs Arsenal: Hojlund dropped, Maguire and Ugarte still absent

Ruben Amorim has made two changes from the Manchester United side that drew 1-1 with Real Sociedad in San Sebastian on Thursday. Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof come in for Rasmus Hojlund, who drops to the bench, and Patrick Dorgu, who is suspended.

United will want to show progress and climb the table by overcoming one of the league’s best teams but will also have one eye on the second leg against the Basques on Thursday.

Andre Onana is in goal.

Lindelof joins Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro in the back three.

Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot are the wing backs.

Casemiro partners Bruno Fernandes in midfield.

Up front Eriksen and Alejandro Garnacho will support centre forward Josh Zirkzee.

The subs are Dermot Mee, Elyh Harrison, Harry Amass, Ayden Heaven, Toby Collyer, Jack Fletcher, Jack Moorhouse, Hojlund and Chido Obi.

Dorgu returns to his three match suspension today leaving Ruben Amorim with even fewer players at his disposal for the home Premier League match with Arsenal.

Altay Bayindir, Jonny Evans, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount, Amad, Harry Maguire and Manu Ugarte are all injured.

Today’s match at Old Trafford kicks off at 4.30pm.

Amorim makes changes for Gunners clash

ManUtd.com reporter Adam Marshall at Old Trafford.

Sunday 09 March 2025 15:15

Ruben Amorim has named his Manchester United side for the 16:30 GMT kick-off against Arsenal.

The fixture is sandwiched between the Reds’ crucial Europa League round-of-16 ties against Real Sociedad and the head coach has made two changes for the Old Trafford clash.

The Gunners are still trying to apply some kind of pressure on runaway Premier League leaders Liverpool, who went 16 points clear with Saturday’s 3-1 win over Southampton.

Victor Lindelof and Christian Eriksen come into the starting XI, following the 1-1 draw in San Sebastian on Thursday.

It is Lindelof’s first Premier League start since the game against Brentford in March last year. The Sweden international has come off the bench six times in the division this term, the longest period being the full half he played in helping to keep a clean sheet in the 0-0 draw at Aston Villa in October..

Diogo Dalot makes his 200th appearance for the club, probably on the left, with Noussair Mazraoui moving out of central defence  to the right-sided slot.

Rasmus Hojlund is on the bench but Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu serves the second of his three-game domestic ban, for the red card against Ipswich Town.

Youngsters Harry Amass, Jack Fletcher, Jack Moorhouse and Chido Obi are among the substitutes.

THE TEAMS

United: Onana; Yoro, De Ligt, Lindelof; Mazraoui, Casemiro, Fernandes (c), Dalot; Garnacho, Eriksen; Zirkzee

Substitutes: Harrison, Mee, Amass, Heaven, Collyer, J. Fletcher, Moorhouse, Hojlund, Obi.

Arsenal: Raya; Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Calafior; Odegaard, Partey, Rice; Nwaneri, Merino, Trossard.

Substitutes: Neto, Lewis-Skelly, Kiwior, Tierney, White, Zinchenko, Jorginho, Martinelli, Sterling.

Arsenal ‘bottlejobs’ have been ‘exposed’ by Liverpool brilliance; Amorim must drop three Man Utd stars

Arsenal ‘bottled their title challenge before it even began’ as Liverpool conspiracy is nonsense. Plus Man Utd must drop three stars who are failing to help out Rasmus Hojlund…

Send your thoughts to theeditor@football365.com

Inevitably bitter bottlejobs
Sixteen points clear(pre Utd v AFC)

Unstoppable. Relentless. Inevitable. Liverpool Football Club are marching towards their 20th league title, and there’s not a soul in the Premier League who can stop them. But while Arnes Army continues to brush aside everything in their path, something even more hilariously predictable has emerged in the background — a tidal wave of bitter whining, outlandish conspiracy theories, and sheer desperation from rival fans.
The Premier League has always been dramatic, but what we’re witnessing this season is utterly unprecedented. With Liverpool establishing a monstrous lead, the conversation has shifted from “Can anyone catch them?” to “How can we discredit them?” Rival fans, scrambling for anything to cling to, have descended into full-blown delusion — and their favorite weapon? Blaming VAR and the officials for Liverpool’s success.

Week after week, the narrative grows more laughable. Every decision that marginally favours Liverpool — whether it’s a tight offside, a handball, or a penalty — is instantly plastered across social media with cries of “corruption” and “Premier League scriptwriters at it again!” It doesn’t matter if the same calls are made for other teams; in the eyes of rival fans, Liverpool are being carried to the title.

The irony? Liverpool are obliterating the league with the same intensity and brilliance they displayed in their 2019/20 title-winning season — and if anything, VAR has handed them far more misfortune than fortune. Dubious ref decisions , soft penalties against them, clear penalties not given( yes UAE employee Mohamed Oliver I’m talking about you)  and bizarre refereeing inconsistencies have plagued them throughout the campaign. But instead of acknowledging their superiority, rival fans have instead concocted wild theories about the Premier League “desperately wanting Liverpool to win the title.”

The truth is far simpler — Liverpool are just miles better than everyone else. Arne has tweaked a monstrous winning machine, capable of dismantling any team in the league. The 16-point gap isn’t down to favorable refereeing — it’s down to a relentless, ruthless, and magnificent football team led by a world-class manager. Oh , and coming up against Bottlejob FC LOL

Not only have Arsenal bottled their title challenge before it even began, but they’ve now resorted to the lowest, most pathetic form of coping: blaming VAR, referees, and the Premier League scriptwriters for Liverpool’s dominance.

It’s genuinely laughable. Every time Liverpool get a decision — whether it’s a tight offside or a penalty — Arsenal fans flood social media with cries of “corruption!”, “the league is rigged for Liverpool!”, and the most delusional of all: “the Premier League wants Liverpool to win it.”

But it’s not just the fans. Even Mikel Arteta, Arsenal’s supposed tactical genius, has subtly joined the pity parade. His passive-aggressive digs in post-match interviews about “teams getting fortunate decisions” are nothing more than veiled shots at Liverpool. Deep down, Arteta knows exactly what’s happening — his team has been exposed. OOOH  we have injuries , so do every other team, get over it.

Again. Liverpool, a team once written off as “in transition,” have rebuilt, reloaded, and roared back to the top without skipping a beat. Meanwhile, Arsenal are still mentally scarred from their capitulation and now resort to tinfoil hat conspiracies to cope.

The irony is delicious. This time last year, Arsenal fans were writing open letters about “how football was finally coming home to North London”. Now? They’re reduced to refreshing the VAR thread on Twitter, desperately hoping for a moment of controversy to discredit Liverpool’s dominance.

But hey — if rival fans need to cling to conspiracy theories and VAR delusions to cope, who are we to stop them? In a few months’ time, Liverpool will lift their 20th league title — and the collective meltdown from the rest of the league will be just as glorious to witness as the trophy itself.

Enjoy it, Reds. Their tears taste sweeter than ever.
Perchy The Parrot, Anfield

Why Ruben Amorim’s Man Utd isn’t working…
Watched an interesting tactical breakdown earlier of why Amorim’s United are failing so well, and the continued blame being shovelled at Højlund prompted me to send this in.

The TL;DR is, it’s not particularly his fault.

The video, showed how the movements are supposed to go, and where they are breaking down in the team. But suffice it to say, the principle of the tactic is for the wing backs and 10s to drive forwards to create space and then play the ball in to the 9 for a one touch finish.

Højlund is making his runs, he’s doing his part, but as we saw with Dalot against Real Sociedad (and in so many other games), the issue is the failure to make that pass and the runs from the 10s into the gaps.

There was an interesting couple of screens that show the passes by the wing backs and Bruno, in recent games. Literally none were played into the striker or the box generally. It is massively stark. They are passing literally anywhere else, and usually backwards, after they’ve laboured their way up the pitch.

The issue isn’t that the striker isn’t making the runs, as he actually is. But even if he wasn’t, still play the ball to where he should be so he can learn get comfortable that the ball is coming. He has the pace and strength to get to them. At the moment, he’s getting maybe one touch in the box per game.

The most irritating thing is that man for man there is no way you’re saying Sporting is a better side than United, even with the crisis state as it is. I don’t think *on paper* you’d say it of Forest either. But what both do have are players doing their jobs, and following the instructions. As a result, the team is far superior.

Is it Amorim’s fault? Not entirely, but he has a part. The manager can’t make the decisions for the players once they step on the pitch. But he can drill them on the training field and refuse to play them or take them off if they’re not following his instructions when they step over the white line. If Dalot or Garnacho or Bruno refuse to play the simple square pass to the free striker over and over, they shouldn’t be playing the next match, simple as that. Even if it means playing kids. At the moment, he’s tolerating these abject performances and so nothing is changing. Only some players get the stick.

As pundits have said, Højlund at Arsenal would be scoring a hatfull because they would be feeding him on repeat.

And yes, Rashford and Antony are both doing good work in exactly the areas of the pitch that United are completely failing in right now. As was Mainoo when he played there once. So naturally, they should all be binned.

More Man Utd musings…
– There was a point last week where, despite United not having played football in days, the top 4 stories at the Guardian football coverage and indeed your hallowed front page had them front and centre. For a team that is 12th or whatever, it’s just weird. That environment would break most.

– Lots coming out of Mainoo’s ‘camp’ that he wants big bucks or he’s off. Obviously sad as he’s a local lad and had been rumoured to be a good egg, but this is crucial for INEOS to say no. Kobbie is pure potential. He’s a central midfielder with a questionable engine who has played 90 minutes of senior football a handful of times. And he wants top level wages.

– If Garnacho can sort his decision making, he could make it at the very top level. But nothing in the last 12 months hints at even a modicum of development there. It’s shocking really. Between him and Dalot it’s like a vacuum of footballing intelligence.

– Remember Luke Shaw? It’s been over a year since he’s played for his club.

– Thursday night was yet another example of why I’m hard on the Amor-IN camp. Despite having to field Dalot, a geriatric Casemiro in a two with Bruno (!?) and having Hojlund’s twin brother who can’t play football up top, United still utterly dominated and should have been out of sight. It’s not happening at the moment because there are only about 3 fit players and they’re not very good in this system.

– Will the powers at be ever fix penalties? Statistically a 80% chance of a goal, given for the smallest infractions these days. VAR took literal minutes to spot that one. And yes, by the letter of the law it’s a handball so well done chaps, but that law is idiotic. Penalties are ruining football, and no one can change my mind. A penalty should only be for a denial of clear goal scoring opportunity, at the decision of the ref. Nothing else. Touch a toe of a player heading towards the corner flag? Not an 80% goal. Ball bounces into your finger accidentally? Not an 80% goal. It’s plainly broken.
Ryan, Bermuda (Amorim has 1 signing under his belt. Let’s judge him with at least a couple eh?)

Forest trophy parade
Dear 365,

Will Forest fans be writing in to jubilantly celebrate a Fake Cup Final win against Citeh? Isn’t that how it’s supposed to work? Or does Nuno have to first blow £750m over ten transfer windows 🤔
Will be interesting to see if Forest fans get out the 2002 Vintage Dom Pérignon to celebrate (although one suspects they likely have higher standards than this). Interesting that Nuno looks likely to achieve Top 4 CL football without any “processes”, fake pickpocketing stunts or £65m ashtrays. Forest finished *59 points* behind Citeh last season recall, and are beating them and going for CL at Citeh’s expense. Their entire summer squad refresh of 9 new players cost less than one Declan Rice! And Nuno isn’t paid £15m a season is he? Weird.
Meanwhile, we witness certain mediocre frauds clearly regressing, at great expense, and we are told it’s “generational”. Ok! Yuuum that Kool-aid taaaaasty!
Stewie Griffin (What phase is Nuno in? Why didn’t the Forest MC play “Humble” by Kendrick??? Congrats Forest, excellent season)

Frank needs time away from spotlight
Dear Con Kan (or should I call you Frank?)

The main reason there’s been no mention of how well Frank (you) is doing is because it’s the Championship, and 365 doesn’t give a lot of mention to that (for good or bad – that’s another conversation).

The negative press before was mainly because he seemed to show the worst traits of an ex player – mainly getting jobs on name as opposed to actual talent.

I think he (you) will benefit from some time out of the spotlight anyway to, you know, actually learn the job.

Hope everything goes well anyway – he (you) seems to be doing quite well!
Craig, Glasgow

P.S. I’d probably spend less time googling him (yourself) – it’s a bit weird.

Con Kan asks what the beef is with Lampard, and here is my Frank take.  I claim no special knowledge or info other than being a longtime F365 reader.

To briefly sum up from my perspective: He was parachuted into one of the biggest jobs in football on the scantiest evidence, and after failing to impress twice got a further bite at the cherry.  Whilst having vocal cheerleaders. So I guess it’s a reaction to that.

It’s great that he’s now garnering some respect and building his coaching reputation, probably needed a lot more of that at the start.  But the fact we are talking about him and not one of the other 23 championship managers is part and parcel of the entire issue.
Collin (the less we talk about my team right now, the better) Hack

RE Con Kan – how many articles do you see on most football websites talking about Championship managers? Even ones doing well?

That’s why people dislike Frank Lampard, his sycophants seem to think he should be lauded for every single positive he does. Just because he was a world class footballer does not give him the right to have articles written about him left and right.

Where are the articles about Regis Le Bris? Liam Manning? Tony Mowbray? Even Daniel Farke?

I’d suggest if you want reporting on the Championship you perhaps go to websites that report on it regularly, rather than those that focus on the Prem and other top leagues. The EFL website probably has its fair share of Lampard articles that you’re so desperate to read. Or write some for the Lampard fan club you must be a member of.

While on-pitch results continue to be dire for Manchester United, Ruben Amorim has put up a brave face ahead of Sunday’s Premier League game against Arsenal by claiming there have been a lot of small improvements which bode well for the future.

Speaking to Premier League Productions (via the official website), the Portuguese tactician revealed that both Joshua Zirkzee and Bruno Fernandes are among the most improved players since his arrival.

He also claimed that the centre-backs are also coming to grips with how to operate in his 3-4-3 system which has pleased him a lot.

Leny Yoro carrying the ball into midfield is a prime example of what Amorim wants to see from his backline. Also, the way the team remained positive despite going down to 10 men against Ipswich Town to eventually claim the win was another point he raised.

Amorim sees improvement

“In the small things in our game, I see improvement. It’s hard to see but I see it. I think we are improving in the last two games, for example, the way we have possession. Our central defenders are playing in a different way, more confident.

“And, if they play well, our team will play better. I think some players are improving individually. Josh, I think is improving, in changing, a little bit, the position.

“We are trying to find a better space for Bruno but sometimes you want him, yes, everywhere as he’s really important for us. Even against Ipswich, we suffered a goal and we continued to play the same way and I feel, in these small details, I feel that the team believes a little bit more.

“The rest, I think, it’s hard to see things in this season. It’s more here in Carrington, the way we are training, the intensity, and we are trying to find a way to improve the team.”

But these small changes are certainly not having a positive impact on the results with the Red Devils losing 10 out of 25 since the former Sporting boss took charge.

And the 40-year-old admitted that he is not too happy with how the matches have panned out but he is building a solid base ahead of next season.

Bodes well ahead of next season

“In terms of the results, it’s bad. Also the performances are not improving a lot, to be honest. But the good thing is that we are learning a lot. We are changing a lot of things but you cannot see it. Here in Carrington, the way we want to do things. I’m understanding the players and doing, in my head, what is the future of the squad.

“And that can be really important next year, but there is also a risk, when you are planning and doing and thinking to the future, you have to pay attention to the present. And the present is really hard in the moment because the results and the performances are not there.”

Whether he is thinking too far ahead remains to be seen. There have been rumours that he might be ready to quit in the summer while he has made it clear to his inner circle that he should not have joined mid-season.

Hopefully, these small changes will be in effect against the Gunners and Real Sociedad in the second leg with fans desperate for some quality.

Liverpool, Man Utd make ‘offers worth more than £50m’ for La Liga star who is showing role ‘concern’

Liverpool and Man Utd have made offers for Barcelona midfielder Gavi ahead of the summer transfer window, according to reports.

The Reds have had an amazing season in the Premier League so far with Arne Slot’s side leading the Premier League by 16 points to second-placed Arsenal, who face Man Utd on Sunday.

Slot could hardly have wished for a better start as the new Liverpool manager with the Reds reaching the League Cup final and into the last-16 of the Champions League.

The only real mark on his record this season was their 1-0 defeat to Championship strugglers Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup but Slot has had a few off-field issues to deal with.

Man Utd, meanwhile, are having a complete sh*t-show of a season with Ruben Amorim’s side currently 15th in the Premier League table, having won just five of their 16 league matches under the Portuguese head coach.

Both sides are looking at improving their side ahead of the summer and reports in Spain claim Barcelona midfielder Gavi has caught the eye of both the Premier League sides.

The young Spain international ‘has two offers from the Premier League on the table, both worth more than 60 million euros (£50m)’ and his ‘current situation in the team has caused some concern among those around him’.

The La Masia graduate ‘is not happy with the minutes he is getting in recent games, especially since the arrival of Dani Olmo , who has taken his place in the midfield’.

Liverpool and Man Utd are understood to be the two teams who have made the offers for Gavi with ‘both teams are looking to strengthen their midfield with young, promising players, and Gavi fits that profile perfectly.’

But a deal looks like a long shot for both Liverpool and Man Utd with neither Barcelona or the player interested in doing a deal as things stand.

The report adds:

‘For Barca, the player is not  transferable. The Barca board has no intention of selling one of its greatest talents, unless Gavi himself requests his departure. The club sees the youth player as a key piece for the future and is confident that, with time, he will regain his role in the team.

‘Although the Premier League offers are tempting, Gavi is determined to stay at Barca. The young midfielder knows that, at a club like Barca, opportunities can come at any time, and he does not want  to waste the trust that the club has placed in him. In addition, his love  for the Barca shirt and his desire to succeed at the Camp Nou are stronger than any financial offer.’
