Manchester United has thrown its support behind the Government’s growth agenda by announcing its intention to pursue a new 100,000-seater stadium as the centrepiece of the regeneration of the Old Trafford area.

The stadium, and wider regeneration project, have the potential to deliver an additional £7.3bn per year to the UK economy which brings large-scale social and economic benefits to the community and wider region, including the possible creation of 92,000 new jobs, more than 17,000 new homes as well as driving an additional 1.8 million visitors annually.

Conceptual images and scaled models of what the new stadium and surrounding area could look like were unveiled on Tuesday by Foster + Partners, the architecture group appointed to design the stadium district. These will provide a masterplan for more detailed feasibility, consultation, design and planning work as the project enters a new phase.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, co-owner of Manchester United, said: “Today marks the start of an incredibly exciting journey to the delivery of what will be the world’s greatest football stadium, at the centre of a regenerated Old Trafford.

“Our current stadium has served us brilliantly for the past 115 years, but it has fallen behind the best arenas in world sport. By building next to the existing site, we will be able to preserve the essence of Old Trafford, while creating a truly state-of-the-art stadium that transforms the fan experience, only footsteps from our historic home.

“Just as important is the opportunity for a new stadium to be the catalyst for social and economic renewal of the Old Trafford area, creating jobs and investment, not just during the construction phase, but on a lasting basis when the stadium district is complete. The Government has identified infrastructure investment as a strategic priority, particularly in the north of England, and we are proud to be supporting that mission with this project of national, as well as local, significance.”

Omar Berrada, chief executive of Manchester United, said: “Our long-term objective as a club is to have the world’s best football team playing in the world’s best stadium. We are grateful for the feasibility work done by the Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force exploring options for the future of Old Trafford.

“We have carefully considered its findings, together with the views of thousands of fans and local residents and concluded that a new stadium is the right way forward for Manchester United and our surrounding community. We will now embark on further consultation to ensure that fans and residents continue to be heard as we move towards final decisions.”

Sir Jim Ratcliffe says

“By building next to the existing site, we will be able to preserve the essence of Old Trafford, while creating a truly state-of-the-art stadium that transforms the fan experience, only footsteps from our historic home.”

The most successful manager in English football history, Sir Alex Ferguson, said: “Manchester United should always strive for the best in everything it does, on and off the pitch, and that includes the stadium we play in. Old Trafford holds so many special memories for me personally, but we must be brave and seize this opportunity to build a new home, fit for the future, where new history can be made.”

Lord Norman Foster, Founder and Executive Chairman, Foster + Partners, said: “This has to be one of the most exciting projects in the world today, with incredible regional and national significance. It all starts with the fans’ experience, bringing them closer than ever to the pitch and acoustically cultivating a huge roar.

“The stadium is contained by a vast umbrella, harvesting energy and rainwater, and sheltering a new public plaza that is twice the size of Trafalgar Square. The outward-looking stadium will be the beating heart of a new sustainable district, which is completely walkable, served by public transport, and endowed by nature. It is a mixed-use miniature city of the future – driving a new wave of growth and creating a global destination that Mancunians can be proud of.”

Omar Berrada says

“Our long-term objective as a club is to have the world’s best football team playing in the world’s best stadium.”

Lord Sebastian Coe, chair of the Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force, said: “Today marks an important step forward in what I firmly believe can be the biggest and most exciting urban regeneration project in the UK since the 2012 London Olympics. I am proud to have helped lay the groundwork as chair of the Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force over the past year and would like to thank my fellow members for their contributions.

“Our exploratory work is now complete, and we will hand over responsibility to Manchester United for delivery of the stadium, and the Mayoral Development Corporation to drive forward the wider regeneration.”

Sir Norman Foster says

“This has to be one of the most exciting projects in the world today, with incredible regional and national significance. It all starts with the fans’ experience, bringing them closer than ever to the pitch and acoustically cultivating a huge roar.”

Andy Burnham, mayor of Greater Manchester, said: “Our common goal on the Task Force has been to try to unlock the full power of the club for the benefit of its supporters and for Greater Manchester as a whole – creating thousands of new homes and jobs. If we get this right, the regeneration impact could be bigger and better than London 2012. Manchester United could, and indeed should, have the best football stadium in the world.

“To me, that means a stadium that is true to the traditions of the club, affordable to all, with nobody priced out, and a stadium that sets new standards in the game globally. I believe this vision can be realised, and if so, the benefits for Greater Manchester, the north west and the country will be huge.”

Gary Neville gives first verdict on Old Trafford redevelopment plans

Gary Neville has described plans for a regenerated Old Trafford as “spectacular” as Manchester United look to improve their worn-out stadium.

Old Trafford has gone from one of the finest grounds in the country to being infested with rats as the Glazer family neglected the club’s home but improving Old Trafford has been a key goal of Sir Jim Ratcliffe since his Ineos company took over a minority share in February 2024.

Man Utd co-owner Ratcliffe set up a task force, chaired by World Athletics president Lord Sebastian Coe, to focus on improving Old Trafford with Gary Neville also part of the discussion.

Neville, who has a number of properties in Manchester, described plans for the new Old Trafford as “spectacular”

“I sat on the last task force committee meeting on Friday and I had a glimpse of what is coming and it looks absolutely spectacular,” Neville said during an interview with Ratcliffe.

The club has appointed architect Lord Norman Foster to oversee the plan which will improve not just the stadium but the surrounding area as well.

The club is supported by the UK government who backed the plans but Ratcliffe said any public money will be used on the area around the stadium rather than Old Trafford itself.

As to why a renovation is key, the 72-year-old believes if Manchester United have aspirations to be the greatest club in the world, they need a stadium to match it.

“If you take the view that it’s the greatest football club in the world, then if it’s going to build a new stadium it should be a new stadium that’s befitting the greatest club in the world.

“And also a stadium that befits the greatest league in the world because the Premier League is the greatest league in the world.

“And at the moment, if you look at the Premier League, we’ve got some great stadiums, but we don’t have a Bernabeu, do we? And we don’t have the new Nou Camp. We don’t have that in the Premier League, although it’s the greatest league in the world.

“And also, if you look at the north of England, the north of England has won 10 Champions League finals and London has won two, so there’s quite a few reasons there to have the world’s most iconic football stadium in the north of England at the world’s greatest club.”

On architect Foster, whose company designed the renovation of Barcelona’s Camp Nou, Ratcliffe said the fellow United fan was the best in the world.

“I won’t say much more but Norman Foster, who also is a Mancunian and is the world’s greatest architect in my view, has really created the most iconic [design].

“It would be marvelous if Manchester United could go down that road and in five years’ time or six years’ time have that stadium. It would be fabulous.”

Ratcliffe singles out Man Utd star who ‘got knocked about’ vs Arsenal as he reveals Ten Hag signings

Man Utd co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has singled out Joshua Zirkzee for getting “knocked about” against Arsenal but backs the striker to come good.

The Red Devils have had a miserable season under Ruben Amorim after the Man Utd board made the decision to sack Erik ten Hag at the end of October.

Amorim has won just five of his 17 Premier League matches in charge of the Red Devils as his players struggle to get to grips with his style of play, philosophy and tactics.

Only five Premier League clubs have scored fewer goals than Man Utd this season with Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund coming in for a lot of criticism.

The duo have only scored five Premier League goals between them this season and Ratcliffe picked out Netherlands international Zirkzee for getting “knocked about” against Arsenal.

Man Utd co-owner Ratcliffe said in a wide-ranging interview with Gary Neville on The Overlap: “Look how Zirkzee got knocked about yesterday in the first-half, he really did get knocked about didn’t he?

“He wouldn’t have been used to that playing in the Italian league. It takes time for players to settle.”

When asked by Neville if he thought the summer signings like Zirkzee would ‘come good’ for the Red Devils, Ratcliffe replied: “Yes, yes I do.

“But bear in mind we didn’t have the luxury of time to prepare for last summer. Jason [Wilcox, technical director] had been there three weeks, Omar [Berrada, CEO] three days.

“We had the problem with the coach [Erik ten Hag] – “Is it a yes or no? Are we involving the coach or not involving the coach?”.

“He didn’t sign [those players] but he did have a voice, which is why we [signed some] Dutch players.”

Ratcliffe went on to admit that the Man Utd decision-makers made a mistake by not choosing to sack Ten Hag in the summer.

The 72-year-old added: “It was the wrong decision. We made the wrong decision. It was an error. I suppose in that sense I regret it.

“It was quite difficult to extract in that season when we arrived, Erik’s performance from the structure around him. Difficult to see what environment Erik was operating in.

“Was it, in other words, was the erratic performance a function of Erik, or was it a function of the organisation? And we couldn’t really get to the bottom of answering that question with certainty, I suppose, so we gave Erik the benefit of the doubt.”

“He put the club before himself”: Ratcliffe praises club legend for agreeing to deeply unpopular decision

Manchester United owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has praised Sir Alex Ferguson for accepting the termination of his consultancy contract at the club.

Earlier in the season, Ineos hit the headlines once again as news broke that they had cut Sir Alex Ferguson’s salary in a cost-reducing scheme.

Former players expressed concern at the decision as both Rio Ferdinand and Eric Cantona took umbrage at the decision, claiming it lacked respect.

Ineos also asked the legendary manager to stay away from the dressing room and even irked fans when they claimed that the shadow of United’s most successful manager over the club has had a detrimental effect on the team.

Speaking to The Times, Sir Jim Ratcliffe admitted it was a tough decision but ultimately defended the choice to terminate Ferguson’s contract with the club.

He praised the selflessness of the Scottish coach in finally accepting the ownership’s decision.

“I take my hat off to Alex. I sat down with Alex, just the two of us in the room, and I said ‘look, the club isn’t where you may think it is. It is spending more than it’s earning and we’re going to finish up in some difficulties. Honestly, we can’t really afford to continue to pay you £2 million a year’.”

He claimed that he told the former manager to have a think about the decision and get back to them when he’d had a chance to process it.

Commenting on the feeling of the meeting he claimed, “it was very grown up. Maybe a little bit grumpy at the beginning but he got it, and he came back three days later, after talking to his son” and agreed to step away as his decision.

Reflecting on the Scot’s reaction to the news he said, “I think it reflects really well on Alex, because he put the club before himself.”

The move has come as a series of cuts around the club such as removing a free lunch scheme and making hundreds of staff redundant over the past year.

In a previous segment of the interview relayed by The Peoples Person, Ratcliffe described the financial situation as “fairly scary” and the club would have been “running out of cash” by the end of this year if they hadn’t taken action.

“I’m unequivocal about that”: Ratcliffe makes massive statement on Amorim’s future at the club

Manchester United owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has claimed that Ruben Amorim will definitely be the manager next season at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils decided to keep Erik ten Hag last summer in spite of a poor finish of eighth position in the Premier League last season.

They eventually realised the errors of their ways and sacked the Dutchman just before Halloween and appointed Ruben Amorim from Sporting CP.

Despite the new manager’s popularity with the fans, it has been an incredibly tough time as the club find themselves in 14th in the league and they have been knocked out of both the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup.

The season completely rests on progress in the Europa League as they welcome Real Sociedad to Old Trafford on Thursday in the second leg of the last 16 tie after the first game was drawn 1-1 in Spain.

There have been rumours that United may be looking to part ways with Amorim due to his poor results but Ratcliffe firmly put such rumours to bed.

In a previous interview with The Times, Ratcliffe claimed he liked the manager and that he thought the Portuguese was doing a good job in difficult circumstances.

Speaking to Gary Neville on The Overlap, Ratcliffe once again reaffirmed his support and commitment to the head coach.

When asked whether Amorim would still be the manager at the start of next season Ratcliffe retorted, “I’m unequivocal about that.”

He also confirmed that he was aware that the club would need to recruit players in the summer that suited Amorim’s system including wing-backs and number tens that play behind the striker.

The Ineos chief also stated, “but bear in mind, I am backing the management team. Because at the end of the day it is Omar (Berrada), it is Jason (Wilcox), it is the management team that operate Manchester United.”

When asked about who directly appointed Ruben, he confirmed his key role in the process as he simply responded, “Omar and Jason and me.”

The public backing will come as a great relief to most United fans who are sick and tired of the turmoil and uncertainty surrounding the club. Amorim will also surely be relieved as he will know that he will have a summer of training and recruitment to try and turn next season into a much bigger success than this one.

Which two ex-Reds does Bruno have his sights on?

Inside United made the most of some time with Bruno Fernandes at Carrington to go over his current standing on the all-time appearance list at the club.

Our super skipper has been motoring up the chart by racking up the games since signing from Sporting in 2020, and he celebrated his 275th competitive outing in the Reds shirt with a stunning free-kick goal in the 1-1 draw against Arsenal on Sunday.

Moving one ahead of 1980s favourite Norman Whiteside, he is level with Henry Cockburn and Andy Cole and looks poised to go joint-72nd with Johnny Berry, by playing in Thursday’s Europa League round-of-16 second leg against Real Sociedad at Old Trafford.

Initially perusing our giant printout of the list, Bruno told the official magazine (on sale now) that Juan Mata quickly stood out for him.

The two were pals during their time together at Old Trafford, with Bruno taking over the Spaniard’s no.8 shirt, when he departed for Galatasaray in 2022.

“All of them,” he responded, when asked who was in his sights. “But, obviously, I was just talking about Juan. He will be a good one to overtake, just because of the relationship we have. How good it would be to be ahead of him on something!”

Mata is sat in 67th place, after playing 285 times for the Reds.

While reaching the summit is an impossible task, with Ryan Giggs amassing an incredible 963 matches for his boyhood side, one of the legendary winger’s former team-mates is somebody who Fernandes is hoping to reel in at some point.

“No, Giggsy, I think will be there for many, many years!” agreed our reigning Player of the Month. “Even the other ones, I think it’s a tough one but, obviously, there are many of them. I would probably say I’m going to that [Nemanja] Vidic one, with 300 games, it would be very special.

“Obviously, I think 300 games, for any club, it’s very, very special and then, obviously, I want to do as many as I can. Obviously, I’m trying to be always available for the team and to try to help and, I think, do as much as I can to help the club and to play more and more. I will try my best to do it.”

Bruno Fernandes wants to get one over on his pal Juan Mata.

If you narrow the criteria down to non-UK and Irish players, then Bruno is just outside the top 10. That goal would be achieved by moving past Mata and, of course, Serbian hardman Vidic, like Fernandes a former captain of the club, is also on this particular list.

“Juan, I will go for you,” promised our Portuguese magnifico. “I’ll go for you first, for in the list being in the top 10 of the club for foreign players. But it’s always special.

“Every game, every appearance, it’s something special. All of these ones I have done until now. All of them have some special feelings, obviously some good results, some bad results. Some others that we wanted to do differently but it’s always a pleasure to represent the club.”

Read the interview in full, across 12 pages, in the latest edition of Inside United, the official club magazine.

Bruno Fernandes would love to match Nemanja Vidic’s appearance record.

Ratcliffe admits Rashford exit is ‘a good thing’ as key Amorim sale plans hinted at Man Utd

Manchester United chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe feels the exit of forward Marcus Rashford is “a good thing” as he also suggested that sales will help the budget available to Ruben Amorim in the summer.

Amorim made it no secret he was not a fan of Rashford when coming through the door at Old Trafford. The forward played six games for him, and was on the scoresheet three times.

However, the boss dropped Rashford for the Manchester derby in December, and he was not seen in a United shirt beyond that, with the manager citing poor training efforts as his reason against picking him, before Rashford was loaned out to Aston Villa in January.

United chairman Ratcliffe has suggested the forward’s exit from United is good for the player.

“He’s moved out of Manchester and maybe that’s a good thing for him. I am very pleased he is doing well,” he said.

“It’s good to see because he has got tremendous talent, but for whatever reason it wasn’t working in Manchester for the past couple of seasons. But he is a very talented footballer, Rashford.”

Ratcliffe also suggested that sales will boost the budget available to Amorim in the summer.

“There will be a budget for Amorim this summer. I’m not going to disclose it. Of course, that budget changes depending on who he might decide to sell because that would supplement the budget,” he said.

Rashford is available to Villa at the end of his loan for £40million, and he has shown promise for the Midlands outfit so far, so there’s certainly a chance they take that opportunity.

Otherwise, there remain clubs being linked with the forward’s signature for if that move doesn’t happen.

A report in February suggested that United were hoping to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Aleksandar Pavlovic, and their preferred route to that transfer would be to offer up Rashford.

It was suggested there was ‘uncertainty’ over whether Villa would take up their option to land the United man, which could play into the Red Devils’ hands in potentially getting a promising player out of it.

Man Utd: Ratcliffe called out over Neville interview guff as ‘salary bill’ and Amorim ‘progress’ rubbished

Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe put his head above the parapet on Monday to answer questions from Gary Neville and others on the on and off-field mess he’s overseen for the last year at Old Trafford.

He admitted to “a couple of errors” having made at least 17 of them, claimed Ruben Amorim is doing an “excellent job” and continues to provide an “umbrella” for the Glazers.

After some fact-checking we’ve called him on five instances of bullsh*t.

The ‘salary bill’ whataboutery
“I think what he’s got out of the players he’s got available, I think he’s done well with,” Ratcliffe clarified having claimed Ruben Amorim is doing an “excellent job”.

“Do you?!” Gary Neville replied in shock, and before he could figure out how to frame a next question that didn’t hint at the Manchester United co-owner knowing sweet f*** all about football, Ratcliffe engaged in some very flawed “salary bill” whataboutery.

“If I look at the salary bill of the squad that’s available to him, that salary bill is not the salary bill of Manchester City or Liverpool, it’s a fraction of it.

“If you look at the salary bill of the players that are available to him that are not injured, or not out on loan, because we’ve got, you know, we’ve got Antony out on loan, we’ve got [Jadon] Sancho out on loan, we’ve got [Marcus] Rashford out on loan, we’ve got Mason Mount who hasn’t really played in the last two seasons, we’ve got Luke Shaw who hasn’t played in the last two seasons.

“So if you modify our salary bill for the players that are not available to Ruben, then our salary bill ranks us about, you know, middling, second half of the table. We’re sort of level with the likes of a Nottingham Forest or Everton, not a Manchester City one.

“That salary bill, if you look at that salary bill, is probably about £130m, and we’re talking about Liverpool who’s got a salary bill of £200m, Manchester City have got a salary bill of £300m, so that’s the squad that Ruben’s playing with.”

Manchester City’s salary according to Capology is £223m and even according to Ratcliffe’s caveated United salary bill, £130m still puts them above Liverpool (£129m) and all other Premier League clubs other than Arsenal (£179m) and Chelsea (£161m).

They are not “sort of level” with Everton (£72m), and certainly not with Nottingham Forest (£55m), who are currently 11 places and 16 points above Ratcliffe’s United.

‘A couple of errors’
Ratcliffe essentially admitted to the “couple of errors” it was impossible to shirk the blame for. There is simply no way that handing Erik ten Hag a new contract and hiring Dan Ashworth before sending him packing after five months could have been dressed up to be anything other than massive blunders.

But we would probably have brought up one or two of his other 17 mistakes at Old Trafford had we had the opportunity to conduct the interview, including the club’s policy of contacting family members of the recently deceased to enquire over the status of their season tickets, and we would definitely have gone armed with a picture of former Manchester United captain Katie Zelem to see if he now knows who the bloody hell she is.

When asked if he wanted to clear up the Zelem reports, Ratcliffe answered: “No, not really.”

Four of the top eight earners not available
“If you look at the top eight players in terms of salaries in Manchester United, 50% of those are not available to Ruben.”

Technically correct. Marcus Rashford (£300k per week), Mason Mount (£250k), Jadon Sancho (£150k) and Luke Shaw (£150k) are all currently unavailable. And pointing out that “half of Liverpool’s cream would be gone” (though we may use a different turn of phrase) if Arne Slot faced similar problems is fair enough as their top eight features Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alexis Mac Allister, Alisson and Ryan Gravenberch, but to namecheck Manchester City in similar terms given they’ve been without Rodri, Kevin De Bruyne and John Stones for big chunks of the campaign was odd.

And it was also convenient not to have mentioned second-placed Arsenal given Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus, Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli are all in their top eight earners.

‘Progress’ under Amorim
Having described Erik ten Hag’s reign as “erratic”, Ratcliffe claimed that after a “difficult start” under Amorim we’ve seen “progress”.

Nonsense. If anything, after a decent start results have deteriorated. Manchester United won four and drew one of their opening seven games under Amorim, with the only defeats coming against Arsenal and Nottingham Forest, both of whom look set for Champions League football next season. They’ve won just seven of 19 games since.

The Glazers ‘umbrella’
Banners saying “we want our club back” and “£1bn stolen” were on show as Manchester United fans protested the Glazers’ ownership on Sunday, referring to the amount spent on servicing the debt loaded on to United when the Glazer family bought the club in 2005.

United’s current total debt, including £300m in outstanding transfer fees – which Ratcliffe was eager to point out – is in excess of £1bn. In the last financial year they paid £37m in interest on the debt.

“It’s not the solution to keep throwing money at the problem,” Ratcliffe told Neville when asked about the lack of investment from the Glazers.

Sure, but the Glazers investing just £45m (or half an Antony) of their own money into Manchester United in two decades is criminal. The owners of newly-promoted Ipswich Town have put £83m into their club, Southampton’s owners have pumped £85m into the Saints and Bill Foley has put £93m worth of funding into Bournemouth.

In just two years, Todd Boehly and BlueCo have pumped £146m into Chelsea. Manchester City’s Abu Dhabi owners have invested £1.3bn into their club since 2008. Former Everton chief Farhad Moshiri invested £750m into the Toffees since 2016.

Rather than taking aim at the Glazers over the damage they’re clearly most at fault for, he poked fun at Ed Woodward and previous “management teams” for hiring a body language expert on £175k and making similarly lavish spending decisions.

“You’ve got to get the house in order. If you look at the reason the debt is at the level it is at the moment, that’s increased by £330million in the last four years because the club’s been spending so much more than it’s earning.”

That’s part of the reason, but it’s also got a lot to do with the Glazers not giving two shiny sh*ts about Manchester United. As Neville said, Ratcliffe is now “providing an umbrella over their heads” which should instead be folded and handed to the United fans for them to keep jabbing the Americans with.

“I saw a man”: Club legend cannot stop gushing over United wonderkid who showed a lot of pride vs Arsenal

Manchester United produced a fighting display to grab a point from their Premier League game against Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday even though many had predicted an easy win for the North London side.

Ruben Amorim had said prior to the game that his team needed to survive but they did more than that in the second half and should have claimed all three points but for some brilliant goalkeeping from David Raya.

The head coach will also be pleased with the performance on his Premier League debut for the club by Ayden Heaven, who signed for the Red Devils from the Gunners in January.

Playing against his former club will not have been easy for the 18-year-old, especially when coming on for the reliable Leny Yoro in the second half.

Impressive cameo again

But he more than held his own as seen from the stats. The left-footed centre-back was not dribbled past once and completed a 100% of his tackles.

The former Arsenal man also made three clearances and club legend Rio Ferdinand was impressed with what he saw (all stats via sofascore).

Speaking Rio Ferdinand Presents’ YouTube channel, the former England star explained how Heaven showed pride in his display while also terming his decision to leave North London for Manchester as the right one.

Rio full of praise

“I saw a good attitude because I saw a man looking like, ‘I ain’t going to let Arsenal beat me today.’ There’s a pride, isn’t it because when you go to your old club, it’s quite an emotional thing and there’s a lot of pressure that comes with that.

“You’ve got to prove now why I’m here and I’ve left you lot and I’m playing first-team now, this is why. So, that’s a big pressure and I thought he handled it really well. I think the manager’s comments saying that he’s sometimes almost too comfortable but I really like it and really positive about him will be really great for his confidence.

“I think he’s been justified going to Man United at this point because he’s playing right now. Long term, I don’t know, long term, we don’t know.”

Whether Amorim now trusts him with a start, especially if Yoro and Harry Maguire fail to recover in time for Thursday’s all-important Europa League game, remains to be seen.

But as also seen from his impressive cameo against Fulham in the FA Cup, Heaven has shown he is ready to impact games for the 20-time English league champions.
