Postecoglou all-but gone after ‘atmosphere’ remark as Liverpool and Forest thrive

Liverpool, Brighton and David Moyes are flying. But Spurs have no more excuses, Wolves without Matheus Cunha are doomed and Arsenal have a clear problem.

Premier League winners

Liverpool
It does not particularly have the air of a 25-game unbeaten Premier League run, perhaps owing to the insistence on pretending there has been any sort of jeopardy or title race since about December, or how those draws with Everton and Aston Villa were magnified to a quite laughable degree.

But only Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United have ever had longer streaks without defeat in Premier League history, which is patently ridiculous for a manager in his debut English top-flight season.

Not for the first time, Arne Slot changed the game with his substitutions. And although making three of them at half-time asks uncomfortable questions of the manager and the players coming off, when it prompts the sort of reaction Liverpool inflicted on Southampton, outcome bias dictates that there can only be praise.

The gap between first and second is bigger than the gap between second and 10th. It is early March and Liverpool are guaranteed a top-half finish with Spurs and Manchester United unable to catch them. None of this is particularly normal.

Mo Salah
Only Erling Haaland (29 in 2022/23) has ever scored more goals by this stage of a Premier League season. Just Mesut Ozil (18 in 2015/16) has ever provided more assists after 29 games. Both bars were set in breaking the respective records for one whole campaign and Salah is on course to catch them simultaneously. That is especially not normal.

Nottingham Forest
As ever with Forest, it is difficult to single out one individual for praise from a specifically team-centric performance.

Nico Dominguez made twice as many tackles as any player for either side while not putting a foot wrong in possession. Murillo reprised his engrossing role as chief clearance-maker. Callum Hudson-Odoi has developed a remarkable knack for scoring in 1-0 wins over sides who have habitually fought for the title over the past few seasons. Neco Williams has undergone a wonderful transformation under Nuno, whose career hex over Pep Guardiola has resulted in him becoming only the second manager ever to beat the Spaniard with at least three different teams.

They are third and there entirely on merit, with Manchester City just the latest brick to fall into place. Forest have now beaten 21 of the 23 different sides they have faced in the Premier League since promotion, and while Bournemouth do appear to have their number, it is remarkable that Luton are League One-bound as their old relegation rivals confidently approach the Champions League one year on from a battle which reflected abysmally on Mark Clattenburg’s former employers.

The Manchester City victory was necessary too, their first in the league since the 7-0 thrashing of Brighton on February 1 and a timely tightening of wheels which might otherwise have fallen off if left unchecked. Forest’s longest winless run of the season stands at three games, which only Liverpool (two games) can better.

Crystal Palace
Fifth in the European form table is ludicrous in itself but Crystal Palace threatening consecutive top-half Premier League finishes is really quite daft.

It is particularly curious, considering Eintracht Frankfurt specifically cited the negative ‘overall performance in the second half of the season’ as a factor in their decision to part with Oliver Glasner, that Palace have been so strong in the second half of his first full campaign, to the extent that only Liverpool (25) have earned more points than the Eagles (19) since January 4, and that from two extra games.

Palace’s current run of three straight league wins is as long as Arsenal’s best sequence of consecutive victories this season. Glasner really is one of the most quietly impressive managers in the division.

Brighton
Sixth in that European form table, which is perhaps even more absurd as these six successive victories were preceded by that 7-0 thrashing against Nottingham Forest.

Fabian Hurzeler deserves immense credit, ceding the possession which betrayed them against Forest for more defensive stability and a tweak in shape. But he has also reversed the recent trend of Brighton starting campaigns well but finishing them poorly. They already have as many points in the second half of this season as they accrued in the entire second half of 2023/24 (18).

Much of that comes down to the sort of attacking variation that only a club-record spend can really buy. Yasin Ayari became the 18th different player to score or assist a Premier League goal for Brighton this season when he crossed for Jan Paul van Hecke’s wonderful headed equaliser against Fulham; only Chelsea and bizarrely Everton (both 19) can beat that, and the Seagulls share the burden far more equally.

Manchester United
Ruben Amorim was so deeply apologetic about deploying a low block that it seems unlikely he will celebrate the first three-game unbeaten run of his tenure. But these are baby steps in the right direction, pale green shoots barely visible above the surface.

That move which resulted in the wing-back to wing-back chance for Noussair Mazraoui from Diogo Dalot’s cross should sustain Manchester United for a couple of weeks as a tantalising glimpse of what could be achieved.

If that sounds like a low bar that’s because it is; the fact is Manchester United have had nothing like that sort of proof of a clear and coherent message getting through on the training ground in what feels like years.

David Moyes
The king of the mid-season managers. Moyes has picked up 1.78 points per game at Everton, beating Graham Potter (1.43 at West Ham), Vitor Pereira (1.17 at Wolves), Ruben Amorim (1.12 at Manchester United), Ruud van Nistelrooy (0.47 at Leicester) and Ivan Juric (0.27 at Southampton) with varying degrees of comfort.

At least two of those stand as proof of how wrong Everton could have got the appointment of Sean Dyche’s successor having made the right call in parting with him.

Only four managers have ever accrued more Premier League points with a single club. Give Moyes (658 with Everton) a year and he will catch Jurgen Klopp (705 with Liverpool).

Chelsea
A first pair of consecutive Premier League clean sheets since September might be cause for revelry if they didn’t come against the two worst teams in the league.

It also leaves Chelsea facing one of the tougher runs of remaining fixtures of any side, but their ability to put to the sword the teams in the bottom half should not be overlooked. Only Liverpool have more points or goals against those in 11th and below, which is a marked improvement on what was a Mauricio Pochettino blindspot.

Robin Olsen
Aston Villa’s standout performance
came slightly further forward but Olsen keeping his first Premier League clean sheet since January 2023 was a surprise. Have a guess who that came against; the entirely inevitable answer will be at the bottom.

Premier League losers

Spurs
The problem with the entirely valid injury caveat was always that once that card was removed from the deck and unable to be played again, performances and results had to improve almost immediately. If supporters were expected to show patience while Spurs managed that crisis, asking them to remain calm as those returning take time to find their feet is preposterous.

When your starting forwards cost £127.5m and are not involved in either the overhit cross or penalty which crowned this comeback draw, there will be consternation at being outplayed at home by a team which cost a fraction of the price under an exciting, vibrant coach who has changed to cope with his own persistent injury issues.

The same goes for an overrun £50m midfield and expensive porous defence; Cristian Romero was only ever going to look shaky in his first appearance for more than three months but that is the point: Spurs cannot simply point to injuries and then the bedding-in period as part of the rehabilitation to those injuries as the overriding reason behind these substandard displays.

It makes a mockery of the idea Ange Postecoglou could not possibly have adapted his system and ideals to suit the players he had available through those difficult months.

And while his comments on “the atmosphere in the stadium” might have been lost in translation, bringing supporters into constant underperformance in any way never ends well for the manager who chooses that path, especially when those same fans have already been asked for their unabating consideration and understanding in exchange for the club’s worst season in two decades at increasingly costly ticket prices.

Bernardo Silva
He might forever remain the one player Pep Guardiola will never sell, only now because of a lack of feasible buyers rather than a desperation to keep him.

Barcelona and PSG came close to prising the Portuguese away on a number of occasions but both have long since undergone the sort of transformation to focus on youth which Manchester City hope to successfully implement soon. It is similarly difficult to envisage a place in that future for a knackered 30-year-old whose contract expires next year.

Through these Manchester City troubles, Silva has been a comfort blanket whose availability Guardiola has clung to this season. Having ranked sixth and seventh in the squad for total minutes in all competitions in the last two seasons respectively, Silva is up to third in 2024/25 and has been used in a variety of different positions to plug any and all gaps.

But it seems beyond him now, at least at the sort of dependable level which made him one of the league’s best players a few years ago. The sight of Silva being given the midfield runaround has become all too frequent. While Manchester City have far bigger problems to address, an inability to rely as comfortably on their former paragon of consistency sums up this general malaise.

Arsenal
Their record this season in Premier League games when they have more than 60% possession is P10 W3 D5 L2 F12 A8. Last season it was P17 W13 D1 L3 F47 A15. It is a massive discrepancy which basically accounts for that 15-point gap to Liverpool by itself.

READ MORE16 Conclusions on Man United 1-1 Arsenal: Arteta’s obsession, Amorim’s compromise and Neville’s wall

Fulham
Perhaps Champions League qualification was always only ever a distant possibility, and never an objective set within the club. But Fulham absolutely were positioned perfectly to capitalise on a wide-open race and defeat to Brighton was a costly misstep.

Fulham had been imperious against their nearest challengers for the European places. There is ample opportunity to atone but they are struggling to build momentum and might soon consider the FA Cup back door as their best way in.

Brentford
Seven wins and one draw in their first eight home games, then two draws and five defeats in their next seven.

Brentford are the highest-ranked club in no other competitions for the remainder of the season, with neither Europe nor relegation a feasible reality in any way. It is a serenity they deserve praise for achieving but these final two months will also be entirely bereft of any real drama. In short: it seems quite early in the season for teams to be heading to the beach.

Wolves without Matheus Cunha
‘Football team not as good without best player’ is not an especially groundbreaking revelation but it is pertinent in the case of Cunha for as long as he decides to incur avoidable suspensions.

Wolves’ record in the four Premier League games Cunha has not started this season is W0 D1 L3. Marshall Munetsi’s goal was the first they have scored in those matches; before then, Wolves had conceded nine without reply.

The rank hopelessness of the three teams below them mean it would not be a monumental shock if Wolves already had enough points to survive, but that is not a gamble they can really afford to take – especially if his latest ban is extended as expected and he is sidelined for the pivotal trip to Ipswich.

Bournemouth
It is a measure of how far they have come that failing to beat Spurs away is perceived as a negative, but those were points dropped by Bournemouth in every sense.

As Iraola said: “Before coming here it is probably not a bad result but after how the game went and how well we performed, we are not happy with a point. We have to be more clinical and smarter.”

Even just in a basic sense his point is clear: Bournemouth are the fifth-biggest underperformers in terms of xG and their ratio of goals per shot (0.09) is the lowest in the top half. The room for improvement is obvious.

Leicester
It would be interesting to know which of Leicester’s 11 defeats from 12 Premier League games – a victory over Spurs, obviously – prompted Ruud van Nistelrooy to belatedly decide things might not be working and that a formation change could be necessary.

The good news is that was the closest Leicester have come to keeping a clean sheet since that remarkably misleading win over West Ham in Van Nistelrooy’s first game. The bad news is that they still lost, which they are on course to do a club-record number of times in a single Premier League season.

Ipswich
Still the last team to come from behind at half-time to win a league game at Old Trafford, but Kieran McKenna will probably weirdly want to focus on this season rather than the endurance of an irrelevant 41-year-old statistic.

He is right to talk about “margins” and “developing”, of how Ipswich were “competitive” in defeat, but supporters are equally entitled to grow frustrated at being given the same meal each without the promise of a bit of variety in their diet. If this squad is “learning” then some proof would be welcomed.

It is an achievement to be bottom of any table this season while Southampton are striving to achieve historic awfulness. But there Ipswich are, the absolute worst of any team in the second half of games in almost a complete inverse of their strong finishes in the Championship last campaign.

Ivan Juric
He noticed “some really good things” from Southampton and it probably didn’t even rank in their worst 25 performances or results of the season. But that really is remarkably damning after a 3-1 defeat.

The Derby record remains within reach but beyond that, Juric is competing for the unofficial title of absolute worst Premier League manager ever. He has fewer points per game than Terry Connor, Jan Siewert and Nathan Jones, with only Neil Adams and Jimmy Gabriel worse off for single-season awfulness. Lose every remaining game and he overtakes both. And he doesn’t even have a charming gimmick like Connor’s clipboard to remember him by.

Spurs again
Of sodding course Olsen kept his last Premier League clean sheet against them.

Amorim and Eriksen hail classy gesture made by United star during draw vs. Arsenal

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim and midfielder Christian Eriksen were full of praise for Lisandro Martinez after the injured defender appeared to support his teammates during Sunday’s meeting with Arsenal.

United and Arsenal played out a 1-1 draw after Bruno Fernandes’ opener was cancelled out by Declan Rice.

Amorim’s men came very close to clinching all three points, with the likes of Joshua Zirkzee, Noussair Mazraoui and Rasmus Hojlund all presented with clear-cut goalscoring opportunities.

Even Fernandes had the chance to win it for his side at the death but the playmaker was thwarted by David Raya, who produced a top save.

Before the match, Amorim revealed that Martinez turned up in the dressing room to support his teammates.

Martinez was ruled out for the rest of the season after sustaining an ACL injury last month. He underwent a successful operation to correct the issue.

Amorim told reporters about the Argentine [as quoted by The Mirror], “If you let him, he can go play today without problem.”

“Because he loves the club, he wants to help the team, he understands the context. Like I said, he’s a great character, he’s really important in the dressing room.”

Eriksen said on MUTV, “We see him often at the training ground obviously, so he’s still one of the boys.”

“And we know what he’s going through with his rehab, and a few other guys.”

“Anyone who comes and supports the games is a good sign. And, yeah, we’re just waiting for everyone to come back really.”

United are back in action on Thursday when they face Real Sociedad in the second leg of their Europa League round of 16 fixture.

United and Liverpool lock horns in battle to sign the perfect wing-back for Amorim’s system – report

Manchester United are set to take on Liverpool in a battle to sign Antonee Robinson this summer.

A top performer for Fulham this season, the left-back was on Man United’s radar in January, although no deal was made.

Despite Fulham’s insistence on keeping Robinson at the club, it appears that the player himself is open to leaving despite being happy.

This has reignited transfer talk over the full-back, with United set to face some fierce competition as they look to lure him to Old Trafford.

“At Old Trafford they are intensifying their surveillance of a full-back whose contract expires in 2028,” Fichajes wrote this morning.

“A player who, incidentally, is also on the shopping list of a Liverpool team that is flying high towards the Premier title. Robinson’s valuation will not fall below €50m, so the Red Devils and the Merseyside team already know the price to pay for the defender. There is no more competition in this market,” the article continued.

A left-back by nature, Robinson has been performing as a wing-back in recent times, thereby grabbing the attention of United manager Ruben Amorim if reports are to be believed.

No doubt Amorim is on the lookout for talented wing-backs who will blend seamlessly into his preferred 3-4-3 formation.

Given his performance metrics this season, Robinson seems to be an ideal fit.

In 28 Premier League matches, Robinson has provided an impressive 10 assists, showing his attacking flair.

Still, he remains a hard-working defender, averaging 2.5 tackles per game while making 3.1 clearances per outing. He has also avoided committing any errors leading to either a shot or a goal. (Stats via Sofascore)

Should Robinson be valued at around £40 million to £50 million as reports suggest, it may well be worth United’s time to pursue the potentially transformative signing.

How did Real Sociedad warm up for Thursday?

Real Sociedad were unable to get back to winning ways ahead of Thursday’s Europa League round-of-16 second leg at Old Trafford.

After the 1-1 draw in San Sebastian last Thursday, they were in action again at the Reale Arena on Sunday night, taking on Sevilla in La Liga.

Coach Imanol Alguacil heavily rotated his side, to keep his players fresh for Thursday’s 20:00 kick-off in M16.

Sevilla’s Chidera Ejuke scored the only goal of the game, early in the second half, to send them above Real Sociedad in the table, into 10th spot.

Alguacil made a startling eight changes to the XI on duty last week, with only Nayef Aguerd, Igor Zubeldia and Benat Turrientes retaining their place in the side.

Despite making four substitutions at the same time, there was no way through for La Real, who have scored the second-least goals in the division this term.

One of those introduced was key midfielder Martin Zubimendi, who came on for half an hour after missing the United tie due to illness.

The Spain schemer is expected to be influential in the return game, which sees the two teams do battle for the chance to face FCSB or Lyon in the quarter-finals, with the French outfit 3-1 up from their away leg.

The visitors are likely to confirm their travelling squad later in the week, while we will be covering United’s open training session and Ruben Amorim’s pre-match press conference on Wednesday.

Chelsea are ‘willing to do whatever it takes’ to beat Arsenal and Man Utd to hotshot striker

Added firepower is a crucial aim for Chelsea in the summer transfer window and the Blues are reportedly honing their options.

Despite possible competition from Premier League rivals Arsenal, Manchester United and Newcastle United, the Blues are determined to upgrade Enzo Maresca’s attack.

Chelsea have turned their attentions to Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface and “are doing whatever it takes to win the race” according to reporting by CaughtOffside.

24-year-old Nigerian international Boniface arrived in Europe with Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt in 2019 before spending a single season in Belgium with Union Saint-Gilloise.

Boniface signed for Leverkusen in 2023 and scored 14 goals in 18 starts as Xabi Alonso steered them to an incredible Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double last season.

He’s added seven more league goals this term as well as another in the Champions League against AC Milan.

Chelsea are understandably attracted by that level of production. Despite sitting in fourth in the Premier League, the Blues’ need for a scorer is clear.

Nicolas Jackson has scored nine times in the Premier League this season but isn’t reliably prolific. He’s also injured, leaving Maresca with the Christopher Nkunku as his only recognised centre forward.

👉 Chelsea decide ‘four high-quality goalkeepers’ will ‘compete’ for No. 1 shirt in 2025/26

With Nkunku not firing and Cole Palmer struggling for form in front of goal, Chelsea’s need to strengthen has been exposed.

“Chelsea are increasingly moving towards Boniface as a top priority target ahead of next season, so they’ll hope they can remain at the front of the queue for his signature,” reports CaughtOffside.

That queue apparently comprises Arsenal, Manchester United and Newcastle, as well as Saudi Pro League also-rans Al-Nassr, who tried to sign Boniface to play alongside Cristiano Ronaldo in January and ended up signing Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran.

While Chelsea intend to fend off attention from elsewhere, interest in Boniface from their Premier League rivals makes just as much sense.

Man Utd are getting precious little return from their meagre centre forward options and will look to back Ruben Amorim in the summer. Arsenal’s woes up front have been picked over repeatedly since Kai Havertz joined Gabriel Jesus in the treatment room.

Newcastle’s situation is different. Alexander Isak is by many measures the most effective striker in the Premier League.

If the Magpies finish in a Champions League spot, they should be able to hold on to their key man. If not, the interest from elsewhere will be constant and widespread. Arsenal in particular have been frequently linked with a move for Isak in the past.

Boniface’s contract runs to the summer of 2028 but he would come at a lower cost than Isak, for whom Newcastle will fight tooth and nail.

If the Gunners decide to cut out a step and go straight for the Nigerian, it’s likely they’ll find Chelsea standing in their path.

Robbie Savage: Liverpool seal Premier League title as Arteta decision costs Arsenal again

Robbie Savage’s Winners & Losers: Liverpool seal Prem title as Arteta decision costs Arsenal again

In association with Planet Sport Bet, Robbie Savage will give us his Winners and Losers from the weekend’s action…

Robbie Savage congratulates Liverpool on their Premier League title win, thanks in part to the madness of Arsenal’s refusal to sign a striker…

Robbie’s winners

My Football365 winners, not just this weekend, but the whole season – Liverpool. Congratulations on being crowned Premier League champions!

They are now 15 points clear. Yes, Arsenal have a game in hand, but Liverpool have only dropped 17 points this season. They’re on a 25-game unbeaten run in the Premier League, which is quite remarkable. Their only defeat came in the fourth game of the season at home to Nottingham Forest.

They have been incredible, unbelievable, outstanding. Liverpool, congratulations, you are my winners not only for the weekend but for the season.

🏆 Congratulations, Liverpool, on your 20th league title 🤝@RobbieSavage8 crowns the Reds after going 15 points clear of Arsenal. More on the Gunners in a bit… pic.twitter.com/yq4xgu3QJU

— Football365 (@F365) March 10, 2025

So with the title race wrapped up, it’s now all about the race for the Champions League. And Nottingham Forest have, once again, showed they aren’t fading away.

It wasn’t a classic at the City Ground but Forest make it that way. They are so well organised and have enough quality at the top end of the pitch to make their moments count. They have won more games this season without conceding than they managed in the last two seasons combined.

Brighton‘s recent form has put them firmly in the mix for the top five, and a last-gasp win over Fulham gave them a fourth consecutive win in the top flight in 44 years. At this stage of the season, it’s all about momentum, and the Seagulls have it.

Aston Villa have given themselves a shot of being back in the Champions League again next season. They’re having a wonderful time in this year’s competition but there is no doubt their European exploits have affected their domestic form. Beating Brentford on Saturday represented their first win after a Champions League fixture in midweek, when previously they have only collected three points from 21 available.

Tottenham and Manchester United are way off the European spots, but there were some glimmers of light in the dark seasons they are having, even if you had to look really hard to see them!

Spurs showed a bit of fight to recover from 2-0 down and earn a point against Bournemouth, while Bruno Fernandes silenced the critics again with another big goal and performance for United. As Ruben Amorim said, United ‘need more Brunos’. Where would they be without him?!

Robbie’s losers

My Football365 Losers this weekend are Arsenal.

Up until three games ago, they were in a title race. But they’ve only scored one goal in their last three Premier League matches and that came against Manchester United at the weekend, previously failing to score against West Ham at home and Nottingham Forest.

This time last season, after 28 games, the Gunners had scored 70 goals. At that point, they were the top scorers in the Premier League. This season, they are on 52 having scored 18 fewer.

They should have bought a centre-forward. They refused. They’ve got injuries at the top end of the pitch, yes, but the stats prove what we all can see – they needed to recruit a striker. It was so evident again, so my biggest losers have to be Arsenal.

If Liverpool are @RobbieSavage8‘s Winners, then Arsenal have to be the Losers.

They are 18 short of their goals haul at this time last season. Why, why, why did they not sign a striker? pic.twitter.com/vfJmOzBL26

— Football365 (@F365) March 10, 2025

The bottom three all lost again, allowing Wolves to give themselves a six-point cushion. Southampton never gave themselves a chance, while Leicester appeared to have given up before at least offering some fight at Chelsea, but still it wasn’t enough. Ipswich looked the most likely to get themselves out of trouble but just as the run-in approaches, they are in the worst form of any team in the division, picking up only one point in their last six.

Bournemouth played some wonderful football at Spurs, but came away with only a point, due in large part to Kepa.

The on-loan goalkeeper has recovered some of the reputation that diminished at Chelsea, but he was so rash in fouling Son Heung-min in the late stages at Tottenham’s. Kepa was made to look daft by Spurs’ lucky first goal, but he was badly at faulty for the equaliser.

Roy Keane fires ominous United warning, thinks the players are about to turn on Amorim

Manchester United legend Roy Keane has warned that things at the club are likely to become even worse before there’s an improvement, as he questioned why Ruben Amorim has been unable to get a reaction from his players.

Amorim has endured a difficult start to life at United since replacing Erik ten Hag in November last year, only winning six Premier League games.

United played out a 1-1 draw with Arsenal on Sunday – a result that left them languishing in 14th place and level on points with Tottenham Hotspur, who are above them on goal difference.

Bruno Fernandes’ brilliant free-kick effort just before the break was cancelled out by Declan Rice’s second-half finish to ensure the spoils were shared between the two sides.

Before the game, Keane said [via Irish Independent], “The standards of the club have been dropping for a number of years, and have they reached rock bottom? Maybe there’s a bit to go yet.”

“We always talk about giving managers time, but you can’t keep losing football matches either. And I can say that for most clubs, if you’re losing week in week out, there will be doubts in the dressing room.”

“Players will be looking at the manager and thinking, ‘What are you bringing to the party?’ And when there’s been literally no reaction after coming into the club, well that’s a bit worrying.”

The 53-year-old added, “There are huge struggles (for United) on and off the pitch, and that has been well documented.”

“There has been no real reaction to the new manager coming in. There have been a few injuries, but they don’t look like there are many goals. They don’t look good at set-pieces, and they not very dynamic.”

“They have to try and get some belief and confidence back into the group.”

The Red Devils are back in action on Thursday when they host Real Sociedad in the second leg of their Europa League round of 16 tie.

Kick-off is at 20:00 GMT.

Alejandro Garnacho’s next club “decided” with verbal agreement reached for summer departure – report

Alejandro Garnacho was one of Manchester United’s standout players in the 1-1 draw with Arsenal at the weekend, but reports in Spain claim his summer departure is already decided.

The notoriously sensationalist Fichajes state that “the future of Alejandro Garnacho is decided” and in no uncertain terms express that he will join Atletico Madrid at the end of the season.

According to the report “the Madrid club has already reached a verbal agreement with the player” as Diego Simeone looks to strengthen his attack, with the plan to deploy Garnacho alongside Julian Alvarez.

Fichajes suggest that Atletico are hardly having to wrestle the player away from United because he “does not fit into the plans” of manager Ruben Amorim.

They also note the club’s well-documented financial struggles which already generated a January saga involving the 20-year-old who briefly looked set for a winter switch to Napoli.

The reported fee for the summer transfer to Atletico is “close to 50 million euros”, an amount which will give the Red Devils “more leeway to make key signings in their reconstruction process.”

Certainly a major squad overhaul is required and expected when the window opens in June, with Amorim in desperate need of players fit for purpose as he pushes on with his 3-4-3 system.

Garnacho’s sale would bring in ‘pure profit’ as he is an academy graduate, albeit one snaffled from Atletico when he was a teenager – the reported move would be a homecoming for the young winger.

He was born in Madrid and spent five years at the club, and Fichajes note that his transfer to Atletico “marks a turning point in his career, offering him the opportunity to establish himself in a team that will provide him with a leading role.”

Garnacho burst onto the scene with immense promise but is not yet the key figure at Old Trafford which the Spanish newspaper claim he will become under Simeone.

He struggled for consistent game time after Amorim’s arrival, although injuries to his team-mates have seen him pick up more minutes on the pitch and despite persistent issues with decision making and finishing he does seem to be improving again.

Whether or not Fichajes’ bombshell claim about Garnacho’s future already being decided is true, it does feel likely that the fan favourite will be packing his bags in the summer, the profitable fall guy needed to facilitate a rebuild.

The others in the frame were Mariona Caldentey and Frida Maanum (both Arsenal), Mary Fowler (Manchester City) and Kelly Gago (Everton).

Injury ruled Teri out of the Adobe FA Cup quarter-final win over Sunderland on Sunday but she will hope to help the Reds reach Wembley again, when taking on Manchester City in the last four next month.

Congratulations to our no.19 and thanks to everybody who voted!

Man Utd want ‘surprise’ Hojlund replacement as Amorim’s ‘dream’ signing ‘increasingly difficult’

Man Utd are looking to replace Rasmus Hojlund with Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta in the summer transfer window, according to reports.

The Red Devils are having a terrible campaign with INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe making the decision to sack Erik ten Hag and replace him with Amorim in November.

Man Utd are currently 14th in the Premier League after their 1-1 draw against Arsenal on Sunday and Amorim is already coming under severe pressure to turn around results and performances.

Results under Amorim have been worse than Ten Hag’s time at Old Trafford with Man Utd winning just five of his first 17 Premier League matches in charge.

The strikers at Old Trafford have come under particular scrutiny this season with Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee scoring just five Premier League goals between them this season.

Only five Premier League sides have scored fewer goals than Man Utd this season and their attack could require some major surgery in the summer with rumours that Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho could leave.

And now GiveMeSport claim that Crystal Palace striker Mateta – who has scored 15 goals in 33 appearances in all competitions –  is ‘a surprise name that has shot up their list of considerations as head coach Ruben Amorim makes early preparations for his first full season at the Old Trafford helm’.

The report adds:

‘Sources indicate that the Red Devils’ recruitment team made a key decision late last year to refine their scouting process, looking at players who could settle quickly and fit seamlessly into the squad.

‘The focus has had to shift away from more high-risk, high-reward signings and, instead, they are looking at more pragmatic options – players with proven Premier League experience who will not require a long adaptation period. It is understood that they decided to do this as part of the contingency plans in case the season did not end how they hoped.

‘It is in this context that Mateta’s name entered the conversation. The Crystal Palace striker has been in hot form in 2025, catching the eye with his goalscoring exploits, including two goals against Manchester United in February.’

Despite interest in Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap, there is a ‘belief internally is that Mateta could be the better option given the club’s immediate need for goals next season’.

Victor Osimhen, not Mateta, is Amorim’s ‘dream target’ but ‘signing him appears increasingly difficult’ as a potential lack of European football next season, unless Man Utd win the Europa League, making it ‘tough to attract him, and meeting his transfer fee and wage demands could be unrealistic in the current financial climate’.
