There was a welcome sight at Manchester United’s open training session, ahead of Thursday’s Europa League second-leg showdown with Real Sociedad.

Mason Mount was back working with the group, as he takes a big step towards making his first appearance of 2025, after suffering an injury in the Manchester derby victory at the Etihad Stadium in December.

Head coach Ruben Amorim has already expressed in the past how the clever midfielder could be the perfect fit for his system.

We are due to hear from Ruben Amorim on Wednesday afternoon, to preview the Old Trafford clash, with the tie all square at 1-1 following the first leg at the Reale Arena last week.

It is likely he will be asked about Mount, and whether the 26-year-old can be in contention for a place in the matchday squad as early as Thursday night, or held off from returning.

Manuel Ugarte was also present, having missed the first leg and Sunday’s draw with Arsenal after picking up a knock against Fulham.

Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu is available despite his domestic suspension, and he will also address the media alongside Amorim at Carrington.

There was no sign of Leny Yoro, after he was withdrawn at half-time against the Gunners. All in all, it was a 23-man group, consisting of the following players…

Goalkeepers: Elyh Harrison, Dermot Mee, Andre Onana.

Defenders: Harry Amass, Diogo Dalot, Matthijs de Ligt, Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu, Tyler Fredricson, Ayden Heaven, Victor Lindelof, Noussair Mazraoui.

Midfielders: Casemiro, Toby Collyer, Christian Eriksen, Bruno Fernandes, Jack Fletcher, Mason Mount, James Scanlon, Manuel Ugarte.

Forwards: Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Hojlund, Chido Obi, Joshua Zirkzee.

Obi, who has been selected in Denmark’s Under-21s squad, is ineligible for the Europa League but continues to take part in first-team training.

Liverpool ‘furious’ after PSG Champions League ‘antics’ as Man Utd make ‘glaring’ stadium error

Liverpool are out of the Champions League, which you’d think might be a big enough story for everyone not to need to make up any extra guff about. You might think that. But you’d be wrong.

Red flag
It’s rarely good news for Mediawatch when there’s a genuinely massive football match with a genuinely massive result, because it generally means there is less need for the media to go around making up some bollocks about it. And Mediawatch is all about the bollocks.

Thank heavens, then, for the Mirror and their relentless, unstinting commitment to finding the most ridiculous bollocks even where no such bollocks exist or are required.

PSG star leaves Liverpool fans furious with antics after Champions League win

This is, we’re sorry to say, going to lead to another Mediawatch lecture about words having meanings. Sorry about that.

So. Antics. The dictionary defines this as ‘foolish, outrageous or amusing behaviour’. We would be fascinated to discover which of those the Mirror think ‘Achraf Hakimi celebrated by holding up a PSG flag’ falls under.

And, while we’re at it, whether ‘Hakimi’s gesture was met with jeers by some in the Kop’ constitutes Liverpool fans being left ‘furious’ by his foolish/outrageous/amusing behaviour.

We’re pretty sure lots of Liverpool fans were upset at that time. We’re very sure that it wasn’t really about Hakimi holding up a flag. We doubt many of them even noticed.

It’s embarrassing, though, that after all these years Mediawatch can still get caught out by expecting too much of the Mirror.

Like the sweet summer child we absolutely aren’t, we naively thought the flag itself must have been in some way controversial.

Like it was daubed with ‘F*CK YNWA’ or something, instead of what it actually said which was – and you may wish to take a moment to ready yourself lest your fury overtake you – ‘PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN’.

Antics. F*cking antics.

Surprise, surprise
We’re all guilty of getting a bit too hyper-focused on the Premier League at times, but the Daily Mail are saying the quiet part loud here about the Ballon d’Or contenders.

Thierry Henry snubs Mohamed Salah to name surprise former Premier League star as favourite for Ballon d’Or – and hints at Liverpool forward’s reliance on penalties

Yes, the ‘surprise former Premier League star’ is indeed Raphinha and his mere 27 goals and 19 assists this season for a little-known Spanish club called, ah, can’t remember now, Barcelona is it? Something like that.

He’s also scored 11 of those goals in something called the Champions League? Dunno what that is, but it sounds important.

Batter up
Regular readers will know Mediawatch is a huge fan of the current vogue for first-person headlines, but this is a truly eye-catching addition to the canon from the Express.

I watched PSG batter Liverpool – Arne Slot has a big problem if Mo Salah extends his deal

We genuinely had to check this wasn’t about last week’s game. It would be a very slow reveal, but would at least make some kind of sense.

Credit where it’s due, we guess, for at least coming up with what is perhaps the first truly unique and therefore weirdly justifiable ‘I watched’ take because truly not one other person in the world at Anfield or in front of their TV watched PSG batter Liverpool on Tuesday night.

It’s only words
Fair play to the Mirror for putting this headline…

Arne Slot lost for words with question he was asked immediately after Liverpool lost to PSG

…above a story that contains precisely 150 words from Arne Slot.

Where Eagles Stare
Still more fun to be had with those Man Utd stadium designs, it seems, with some fans spotting that one of the artist’s impression images of the new stadium and concourse contains a small upside down Manchester United flag.

As well as fearing what seeing that might do to Liverpool fans, we are also forced to take pedantic issue with one line from the Daily Star coverage of this large news.

Eagle-eyed football fans spotted a glaring error in handout photos of Manchester United’s new 100,000 seater super stadium after it was announced

Which is it, lads? Were the fans eagle-eyed or was the error glaring? Really does feel like it absolutely cannot be both and we won’t be able to settle until we know for sure which one it actually is.

May day
United’s new stadium content isn’t all Big Tops and upside-down flags, though. No; if you’re the Manchester Evening News it is also a key indicator of future transfer strategy.

Manchester United drop hint on future stars in new Old Trafford stadium update

Sigh. Have they, though? Okay, go on then.

Manchester United may have dropped a hint as to which players may be crucial to the club’s long-term future.

Always, always, always a good sign when the confidence of a headline is replaced by the word ‘may’ appearing not once but twice in the intro once your click is safely banked.

The hint is that Amad Diallo, Alejandro Garnacho, Leny Yoro, Manuel Ugarte, Lisandro Martinez and Chido Obi all appear in a two-minute new stadium video from United’s socials.

Even at a sensible club with a clear transfer strategy, the idea that anything a team putting together this video might come up with constitutes anything more than an educated guess about which players might still be around five years down the line is a daft one.

We’ve given this more thought than it merits and concluded that, yes, this is indeed even worse than seeing subtle transfer clues hidden in kit launches and calendars.

Man Utd: Ratcliffe makes ‘high-profile’ transfer a priority as move for Crystal Palace star is ruled out

Man Utd are unlikely to make a move for Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta in the summer as they look at a “more high-profile” transfer, according to reports.

The Red Devils are having a season to forget with Ruben Amorim’s side currently 14th in the Premier League table and have ten games remaining.

Performances and results have been worse under Amorim than they were under his predecessor Erik ten Hag, who was sacked at the end of October.

Only five Premier League sides have scored fewer goals than Man Utd this season with Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund coming in for a lot of criticism this season.

Zirkzee and Hojlund have only scored five goals in the Premier League between them this season, while the latter is on a run of 20 games without scoring in all competitions.

Crystal Palace striker Mateta, who has been in brilliant form this season, has been linked with a move to Old Trafford ahead of the summer transfer window.

The physical presence that Mateta would bring, plus his 15 goals and three assists in all competitions, make him a desirable target after taking his game to the next level this season.

But former Man Utd chief scout Mick Brown – who remains well-connected at Old Trafford – has revealed that a deal for Mateta is unlikely with the Red Devils concentrating on deals for either Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane or Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres.

Brown told Football Insider: “I’d be surprised if Man United went for Mateta. If I’m honest, I never expected him to reach the level he is at now, so I have to bow down and say well done to him and well done to Crystal Palace.

“I think he’s a gem for Crystal Palace, and that’s what he should continue to be. I’m not so sure that he’s the one Man United will be looking to sign, although with the options they’ve got at the moment, he’d certainly be an improvement.

“The names United have been looking at are more high-profile. They’ve been looking at the likes of Harry Kane and Viktor Gyokeres.

“So I think the interest in Mateta, if there is any, will just be as a result of the club doing due diligence on the options which might be available this summer.

“It’s not a move I would expect to see happen.”

Paul Pogba to prioritise one key aspect in decision on future club – report

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba is targeting a return to the French World Cup squad next year.

The Frenchman has not played a competitive game since the 3rd of September 2023 while playing for Juventus in a match against FC Empoli.

He received a doping ban in that year and had his deal with the Italian side terminated. Despite having his sentence reduced, he was only officially able to play competitive football from yesterday when the ban expired.

The former United star has been linked to numerous clubs, even with a surprise return to Old Trafford, but he still remains a free agent.

GIVEMESPORT report that the creative midfielder is in no rush to secure a new club as he is aiming to make the right decision so he can play for France again in next year’s World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

“Paul Pogba is taking his time over deciding his next club as he eyes a place in the France squad for the 2026 World Cup after his doping ban ended,” the outlet claims.

“Sources have been informed that while Pogba is continuing with his training in Miami with personal fitness coaches to get back in shape for a return to action, he is continuing to talk to interested parties about a potential move.”

Clubs in Europe, the MLS and Saudi Arabia are all said to harbour an interest in the player and some clubs in this summer’s inaugural FIFA Club World Cup are also in talks with him.

Pogba is naturally keen to evaluate all his options thoroughly ahead of making a final call on his future.

He “has been in frequent contact with national team boss Didier Deschamps ahead of the new season and has been told that the door is open for him to be selected by Les Bleus once more. However, any call-up would be subject to his fitness and form, making it essential that he picks the right club to continue his career with.”

The 31 year old won the World Cup back in 2018 and even scored a goal in the final against Croatia.

He has played 91 times for his country, scoring 11 goals in the process.

United to recoup just £20m from top star’s transfer having turned down £80m just 12 months ago – report

Manchester United may only bank a rather paltry £20 million when they sell Marcus Rashford in the summer.

With Sir Jim Ratcliffe confirming that Ruben Amorim will stay at Old Trafford next season, there seems little chance that Rashford has any future at the club.

Despite attracting numerous clubs including high-flying Barcelona in the winter, he eventually joined Aston Villa on loan.

It has been reported that Rashford would now be interested in staying at Villa long term after a rather positive start to life at Villa Park, despite the fact he is yet to score a goal for his new club.

United are said to have no regrets about letting him go and the Villans reportedly have an option to buy the forward for £40 million in the summer.

The Daily Mail report however that in reality, United will only earn half of this.

“If the cost of rebuilding United’s squad wasn’t steep enough, Confidential understands that the club could bank as little as £20m from selling Marcus Rashford this summer.”

“Rashford is on loan at Aston Villa who are paying a minimum of 75 per cent of his £315,000-a-week wages until June 30 and have an option to buy him in a permanent deal for £40m.”

Other clubs could certainly get the player for the same price but “none of them – including Villa – are likely to match his current salary, which was given to the Wythenshawe-born star at the height of Paris Saint-Germain’s interest in him and has more than three years to run.”

Therefore, United would likely need to give Rashford a pay-off to compensate the rather large drop in wages that he would probably need to agree to when joining a new club.

“Insiders believe this would be in the region of £20m – halving the figure they would receive as a transfer fee.”

Even though United hope to sell numerous high-earning players such as Antony, Jadon Sancho and Casemiro this summer, they would be banking on making significant money from Rashford, so this news could be a devastating blow for United’s dreams of building up a sizeable war chest for Amorim’s transfer plans.

Reports almost a year ago to the day claimed PSG were willing to pay £80 million for the player, but United were holding out for £100 million. Whether or not those reports are to be believed, there is no doubt that United have missed the boat when it comes to cashing in on one of their prize assets.

Rooney’s Amad revelation

Wayne Rooney has revealed to MUTV that he tried to sign Amad, during his time in charge of Derby County.

Manchester United’s record goalscorer is to play in Soccer Aid at Old Trafford on Sunday 15 June.

The former Reds and England captain is one of the leading figures participating in the huge charity event, which is certain to prove popular with supporters.

When assessing United, Rooney spoke about the impact made by Amad, before the Ivory Coast international suffered an ankle injury in training.

With head coach Ruben Amorim saying he hopes the 22-year-old can return before the campaign is out, Wazza said he was close to securing Amad’s services, only to miss out to Rangers in January 2022.

“I think he’s been great,” said Rooney. “I tried to sign him for Derby, when I was at Derby, on loan. I thought I had him, really. I think it was the next day, he went to Rangers out of the blue.

“He has been fantastic, with the goals he’s scored, [his] creativity and work-rate. He’s been a breath of fresh air and, of course, we’d like a few more players to step up.

“It’s been a difficult season, there’s no denying that, all season,” he continued. “But the new manager has come in and I really like him. The way he handles himself and speaks with the media, he’s been really good. It’s probably more about getting through this season now and, hopefully, starting to implement his style more and getting players in to move the club forward.”

Rooney, who turns 40 in October, is delighted to be lending his support to UNICEF.

“I’m really excited,” he said. “Firstly, I think I’ve done a few things for Soccer Aid and always enjoyed it. The most important thing is raising money for children around the world. It’s incredible work that they do. Last year, they passed £100 million, which is fantastic.

“To come back and play at Old Trafford as well, it’s always an easy one for me to say yes.

“So please go out and buy tickets for the game. I’m sure a lot of different characters will be out there to watch. Some good, some funny. The game has always brought that. More important is helping the most vulnerable kids around the world. Being a father of four, [it’s about] anything we can do to help. We go out and play the game and various things to help the charity, but it wouldn’t work if the people at home didn’t buy a ticket or contribute. Everyone has a major part in changing kids’ lives.”

Ratcliffe lauds “very professional” relationship that will send shudders down spine of United fans

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has refused to explicitly blame the Glazer family for the woes that the club currently finds itself in.

Ineos took a 27.7% stake in Manchester United football club in December 2023 and even though they are in charge of football decisions, the majority of the club is still owned by the deeply unpopular Glazer family.

A document submitted to the New York Stock Exchange in late 2023 highlighted that the two parties have agreed not to make public statements that “constitute an ad hominem attack on, criticise, or otherwise disparage, the sellers [The Glazers], the company [United] or their respective affiliates.”

In an interview with Gary Neville on the Overlap, this seemed very much still the case as Sir Jim Ratcliffe refused to hold the Glazers accountable for their role in the decline of the football club.

Neville highlighted that Ratcliffe has put in £200 million of his own money, yet the Glazers are taking £200 million in dividends and pressed him on why he is accepting his money being “whittled away” while they don’t contribute anything.

In response Ratcliffe joked that his money “is all gone” but when pushed further he deflected from the American owners and said “it’s not the solution to keep throwing money at the problem. You have got to get the house in order. Debt increased by £330 million in the last four years because the club is spending more than it is earning.”

Neville interjected that this is because the Glazers won’t put any money in but once again the Ineos chief chose not to focus on the role of his business partners.

When asked to sum up the current problem he said, “it’s a bloated organisation and it has made mistakes in recruitment. I don’t think the solution to the problem at Manchester United is throwing money at it.”

Neville then queried why such a successful businessman is happy to pay for their mistakes and highlighted that fans are also doing so though increased ticket prices, people losing their jobs and free lunches at the club.

He once again side-stepped criticism of his business partners and argued “debt will come down if we are successful in what we are doing at the moment. The cost of running club and expenditure on squad have gone through the roof, the salary bill has gone through the roof and the performances on the pitch have declined.”

Ratcliffe then went on to state that he can’t spend the Glazers money for them and characterised that their business relationship as “very professional” and “they are letting us get on with it.”

Neville then claimed that he has just created a shield for the owners of the past 20 years and that he and Ineos are now getting the flak for the Glazers’ mistakes.

The Ineos boss replied, “yes it is true, change is always uncomfortable, human beings don’t like change they much prefer to stick their heads in the sand and assume it will all just go away. Change requires some unpopular decisions. I think I have to accept I am going to be unpopular. Maybe I will be unpopular for a long period of time. It is worth being unpopular to fight through the changes that will get Manchester United back to where it should be.”

He then defended the Glazers after admitting that he knows that a lot of people have a problem with the family, to which Neville added, “rightly so”.

Ratcliffe made the unpopular comment that they are only to blame “to an extent” but that in reality they are 3000 miles away and gave “a lot of rope” to previous management teams who have a lot to answer for.

He also stated that they have not been involved in the day-to-day running of the club, so can’t assume as much of the blame as fans like to accuse them of.

Man Utd, Ratcliffe boosted by Chelsea with five ‘not good enough or overpaid’ flops ranked on exit likelihood

With Sir Jim Ratcliffe naming five “not good enough or overpaid” Man Utd players he clearly doesn’t want, we have ranked those on the likelihood of a summer exit…

The INEOS chief faced the music on Monday and received a justified grilling from Man Utd legend Gary Neville (plus various national media outlets), and we’ve called him out on his five sets of bulls*t.

One of the most shocking parts of Neville’s interview with Ratcliffe was his bold move to throw five Man Utd players under the bus, naming and shaming them as either “not good enough” or “overpaid” before he pays a substantial summer bill towards their respective pre-takeover transfers to Old Trafford.

Ratcliffe’s mention of certain huge Man Utd flops was less surprising than others, but the co-owner’s Ruben Amorim-esque brazen approach could haunt him as he attempts to “move” them elsewhere this summer.

Despite going from near-bankruptcy to building a new £2bn stadium, Man Utd are widely reported to have as tight a budget this summer as in January. Therefore, summer sales are necessary to raise transfer funds with Ratcliffe and co. presumably desiring an almighty squad overhaul.

These potential five exits would provide a massive boost, but Ratcliffe risks further frustration as a couple of unwanted stars could stick around. From least to most likely, here is our ranking of the unfancied five based on the likelihood of them leaving this summer…

5) Andre Onana
Heading into this season, Onana’s status at Man Utd was pretty secure after he grew into his debut campaign as David De Gea’s long-term replacement following a shaky start.

But like the bulk of Man Utd’s squad, Onana has gone backwards this season as he’s made major mistakes at increased regularity and is not filling an already unsteady defence with any confidence, sitting 11th in our ranking of the best Premier League goalkeepers in 2024/25.

Man Utd’s transfer priorities lie further up the pitch, but Onana’s decline has become a serious concern and the Premier League giants are linked with several potential replacements as Ruben Amorim reportedly ‘wants’ his No.1 ‘out.

Amorim and Ratcliffe’s recruitment may well sign a new ‘keeper to compete with/replace Onana, but they face a struggle to offload the 28-year-old with a contract until 2028 as interest is unlikely to be rife. Old Trafford chiefs will be praying for a call from the Saudi Pro League…

READ: Old Trafford needed saving but its transformation into a soulless bowl is a sad trend of modern football

4) Rasmus Hojlund
Speaking of big-money Man Utd signings who have fallen off a cliff after a promising debut season, Hojlund is part of the 18th worst strikeforce in the Premier League and surely cannot wait for this sorry campaign to be over.

The 22-year-old was placed in a difficult position with Anthony Martial nowhere to be seen after Man Utd’s hierarchy turned their noses up at the no-brainer Harry Kane transfer, but the inexperienced striker – propped up by his stunning mid-season purple patch – could hold his head high after his respectable 16-goal debut season.

But Hojlund has failed to kick on as his completely eroded confidence has contributed to a disastrous season. Joshua Zirkzee has also experienced extreme lows this term, as the forward pair have been overcome by the burden of carrying Amorim’s attack before they are ready.

A return to Serie A has consistently been mooted for each player and remains a possibility heading into the summer, but Man Utd would be better off righting the wrong from the 2023 summer window and signing a proven forward to add to Amorim’s options rather than sacrificing Hojlund and/or Zirkzee to continue relying on one main man.

3) Casemiro
The 33-year-old has dropped in our ranking of Man Utd’s post-Sir Alex Ferguson transfers
after his excellent debut season and Ratcliffe will be cursing the previous regime’s brain-dead decision to give him a four-year (with an extension option) contract.

Casemiro was once a world-class defensive midfielder, but the former Real Madrid star is well past his peak, and the frantic Premier League intensity has exposed the veteran and his weary legs.

Amorim is clearly not his biggest fan as Casemiro has only recently returned to Man Utd’s starting XI with their injury issues mounting. If Ratcliffe could choose anyone to get off the books this summer, the Brazil international would likely be his pick because of his eye-watering £350,000-per-week salary.

Casemiro has reportedly inflicted a “huge blow” on the Red Devils, who fear a repeat of the Mesut Ozil situation at Arsenal. Cristiano Ronaldo could spare Man Utd’s blushes with this embarrassing transfer fiasco, mind.

READ: Six Manchester United stars ‘suit’ Amorim philosophy but some ‘key players are choosing not to’

2) Antony
Amorim is far from faultless in Man Utd’s shambolic season, with his treatment of Antony proving one of his six major mistakes since replacing Erik ten Hag.

The Red Devils massively overpaid to sign Antony after Ten Hag insisted on a reunion, but Amorim’s lack of interest in reintegrating him was heavily criticised by the player’s agent.

Antony never came close to justifying even half his £86m price tag, but – like Marcus Rashford – he’s benefited from an escape to kinder surroundings, showcasing his talent in a stunning start to his loan at Real Betis with six goal involvements in nine appearances.

His struggles at Old Trafford gave Man Utd no chance of attracting a fee in January, but there are already whispers of interest from Juventus after Ratcliffe halved his asking price to £41m. It may not be a move to Turin, but Antony’s form should earn him a permanent exit and Man Utd will receive a much higher fee than they would have got in the winter.

1) Jadon Sancho
Ratcliffe said Man Utd will pay £17m to Dortmund as part of his £73m switch to Old Trafford in 2021, but the clause in his loan to Chelsea ensures they will make that back and receive a bit extra from their Premier League rivals this summer.

The clause in question meant Sancho’s move to Chelsea would be made permanent for £20-25m (at risk of a ‘significant penalty’) if they finish above 14th in the Premier League this season and this is guaranteed even after their mid-season slump abruptly ended their title hopes.

This unique clause was always going to make either side look stupid after Sancho thrives/fails at Stamford Bridge, and Chelsea are the big loser as Man Utd have got a rare transfer advantage on their rivals. Ratcliffe will be hoping this is a sign of things to come…

Lineker ‘sad’ at watching downfall of Arsenal man who was a ‘top player in the Premier League’

Gary Lineker admits it has been “sad” to watch Arsenal winger Raheem Sterling struggle to reach his previous heights at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners made permanent moves for David Raya, Riccardo Calafiori and Mikel Merino in the summer, while Neto and Sterling joined in loan moves.

Sterling’s loan move from London rivals Chelsea was seen as a low-risk deal with the England international possessing an impressive goal contribution record in the Premier League.

There have been rumours that Arsenal are only paying £100k of Sterling £300k-a-week wages that he’s on at Chelsea with no obligation for the Gunners to make the deal permanent in the summer.

Sterling has contributed one goal and two assists in 22 appearances in all competitions this season for Arsenal and Lineker feels “sad” at the downfall of the winger.

Lineker asked fellow pundits Alan Shearer and Micah Richards on the The Rest Is Football: “What did we make of Sterling?

“It’s hard to be too critical because he didn’t get on [against United] but [Mikel Arteta] even played [Kieran] Tierney quite far forwards [instead].

“It’s a bit sad because [Sterling has] been a brilliant player for club and country for a long time. I wonder if the fact he played so much football at such an early age – and brilliant football as well – maybe that’s taken a toll on him. Maybe it’s a lack of confidence. Who knows?”

Shearer continued: “It’s pretty damning isn’t it? You can tell a bit of a spring in his step has gone. There’s not that same energy or belief when he gets the ball, maybe that’s confidence as well because he hasn’t played and when he has he hasn’t done so well.”

While Richards added: “He’s lacking that sharpness. He was playing for a team at Man City that won everything. He went to Chelsea, playing in a different system, struggling with a few injuries.

“We never saw the best of him at Chelsea and it’s the same at Arsenal. He’s just missing that sharpness. I remember watching clips of him when he was really young just running past players.

“He doesn’t seem to have that sharpness anymore which is sad to see because he’s been a top player in the Premier League.”

Arsenal legend Paul Merson reckons Sterling could do a job up front with Mikel Arteta currently playing Merino up front after season-ending injuries to Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz.

Merson said recently: “I would play Raheem Sterling up front. He’s lively. Defenders will be happy to play against Merino every day of the week. He’s not a centre forward. At least Sterling’s played up there before.”
