United set to eclipse City with blockbuster deal that their noisy neighbours could never pull off – report

Manchester United have announced plans for a new 100,000-seater stadium to replace Old Trafford but plenty of fans have doubts about how INEOS would fund the massive project.

The magnificent amphitheater is expected to cost £2 billion but with the Glazers loading over £1 billion debt on the club, there are concerns about how the new co-owners will go about their business.

Putting in more equity or partnership with other firms are an option while Football Insider have claimed that the Red Devils could agree a naming rights deal to raise more than £50 million a year.

The club was mulling over a deal earlier but at that time, the proposed deal would have been worth £25 million but given the new stadium, it is likely to fetch the club double.

Naming rights

“Manchester United could agree a naming rights deal worth more than £50million a year for their new stadium, sources have told Football Insider.

“Football Insider revealed last June United could agree a £25million-a-year naming rights deal if they were to remain at Old Trafford.

“Sources say a similar deal for their new stadium could be worth more than double that figure, with the club likely to receive offers in excess of £50million a year.”

Interestingly, United’s current shirt sponsor Snapdragon had expressed their interest in such an arrangement in the past and they could potentially return to the negotiating table.

Chief marketing officer Don Maguire had revealed last August that they are ‘working very closely with the team on the reimagining of Old Trafford from a technology and innovation standpoint’.

Currently, noisy neighbours Manchester City earn the most among all Premier League teams from naming rights with Etihad Airways paying them around £15 million.

United could earn more than City

The new stadium will be completed within 2030 with 2032 set as the maximum deadline. The architects of the stadium are Foster and Partners.

Founder Lord Norman Foster described it as “one of the most exciting projects in the world today, with incredible regional and national significance.”

“The stadium is contained by a vast umbrella, harvesting energy and rainwater, and sheltering a new public plaza that is twice the size of Trafalgar Square.”

The design incorporates the trident design from the club logo in the form of three masts that will be 200 metres high and visible from 25 miles away.

Man Utd: Two Old Trafford staff ‘quit’ in ‘huge surprise’ amid ‘club source’ verdict on ‘most respected’ figure’s exit

According to reports, two members of Manchester United’s staff have ‘quit’ the Premier League giants and one exit has been deemed a ‘huge surprise’.

There has been a huge overhaul at Man Utd since INEOS chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe completed his minority takeover of the Premier League outfit at the start of 2024.

Ratcliffe‘s stake started at 28%, but this was upped to around 29% at the end of 2024 after he invested an extra £79m. This added to his initial £1.25bn deal with the Glazer family.

As part of this deal, Ratcliffe has taken control of footballing matters at Old Trafford and has overseen a major cost-cutting programme to balance the books as they sit second in our Premier League net spend table.

The British billionaire has sanctioned mass redundancies, hiked ticket prices, scrapped free lunches and stopped payments to club legends.

Ratcliffe has become increasingly unpopular over the past year and in a fresh blow, a report from The Daily Mail claims United’s head of sports medicine Gary O’Driscoll and senior men’s first-team doctor Jim Moxon have ‘quit’ and will leave their positions.

‘Club sources’ at Man Utd have also revealed the reasoning for their exits, with their departures ‘not’ related to their current injury issues.

O’Driscoll will depart after 18 months at Man Utd following a stint at Arsenal, while Moxon is leaving to ‘pursue a new opportunity’ after two years.

The exit of O’Driscoll has internally been deemed a ‘huge surprise’ and it’s ‘understood that the two medics will remain in their roles during a transitional period to ensure there is no interruption in medical support for the players while United launch a search for replacements’.

The report adds:

‘O’Driscoll’s exit is a huge surprise after he left Arsenal after 14 years to join United in September 2023 and was described as ‘one of the most experienced and respected leaders in sports medicine’.

‘Sources say that he has decided that now is the right time to step down, having driven a series of positive changes across the medical department and laid the foundations for further improvements.

‘They say that the departures of O’Driscoll and Moxon are not connected to the fact that the United squad suffered more than 60 cases of injury and illness last season or that head coach Ruben Amorim is currently without 10 players and has been unable to fill the bench in recent games.’

Man Utd make £55m ‘offer’ for Barcelona midfielder as Euro giants reveal response

Man Utd have made an offer to sign Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong ahead of the summer transfer window, according to reports.

The Red Devils are having a bad time of it in the Premier League this season with Man Utd currently 14th in the table after replacing Erik ten Hag with Ruben Amorim in November.

Results and performances under Amorim have actually been worse than under Ten Hag and there are rumours that there could be a large turnover of players at Man Utd in the summer transfer window.

Ten Hag was known for buying a number of players who had played under him at Ajax with Andre Onana, Matthijs De Ligt, Lisandro Martinez, Antony and Noussair Mazraoui all signing.

Netherlands internationals Joshua Zirkzee and Tyrell Malacia were also signed by Ten Hag and there were rumours throughout his tenure that he wanted to sign another compatriot in the form of Barcelona midfielder De Jong.

However, a move for De Jong never materialised because the Dutchman made it clear that he wanted to remain at the Camp Nou with Man Utd struggling to attract the top players to Old Trafford.

A previous report in December described De Jong as a ‘hot potato’ at the Camp Nou with the Barcelona’s future always up in the air after making just four La Liga starts under Hansi Flick this term.

And now Spanish website Fichajes have claimed that Barcelona have ‘refused to sell’ De Jong to Man Utd after the Red Devils ‘put an offer of €65m (£55m) on the table with the intention of securing the midfielder’s services in the upcoming transfer window’.

Many of the noises coming out of the Camp Nou in recent months have suggested that Barcelona were happy to sell De Jong for the right price in the summer.

However, Barca ‘believes the player remains fundamental to the club’s sporting project, and therefore their priority is to extend his contract’, which comes to an end in the summer of 2026.

The report adds:

‘Manchester United, for their part, have made no secret of their desire to sign the talented midfielder. They have already attempted to sign him in the past without success, and now they are back in the game, hoping that Barcelona’s delicate financial situation will facilitate a deal.

‘However, the Catalan club remains firm in its position: Frenkie de Jong is not for sale, at least not for the amount offered so far.

‘The midfielder’s future remains up in the air and will largely depend on the negotiations for his renewal. If a deal doesn’t materialize in the coming months, Barcelona could be forced to reconsider its position and consider new offers for the Dutchman, who remains one of the most coveted players on the market.’

“I could see the ideas…”: United new sensation explains what drew him to Amorim’s revolution

Manchester United are gearing up for the biggest game of their season against Real Sociedad with the tie finely poised at 1-1 after the first leg.

It was not without controversy with the Spanish side’s goal coming from a dubious spot-kick decision with VAR and referee’s not really favouring the Red Devils in recent times.

It was also seen in the Premier League when Patrick Dorgu saw red after VAR intervention from a foul. And the Dane was asked about the incident during the pre-match press conference.

The direct red has meant he has missed two domestic games so far with the third coming up next weekend. However, he has been available to play in the Europa League, which has been a boost for Ruben Amorim given the injury woes.

On red card

“It was obviously not nice to get the red card, but it is part of football and I just need to learn from this and improve my game,” was how the 20-year-old looked at the incident.

He also added during the pre-match press conference that he is slowly gelling with his teammates and has started to adapt to life in Manchester. “I’ve settled well in Manchester and the training sessions are really good and I’m getting used to the team.”

Despite the setback, the former Lecce star has impressed since his January move to the club, and has been an instant improvement on what both Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui were offering out wide.

He has the experience of playing as a wingback during his time in Lecce and he explained that Amorim’s attacking style of play and use of wingbacks attracted him to the United project as he likes to bomb forward to score goals.

On Amorim

“I saw what Ruben did at Sporting and I could see the ideas he had. It is a very attacking system, I want to get into the box and score goals. I also like to defend.”

He has already played on both flanks, with versatility a huge draw for Amorim. And Dorgu said that he can play on both flanks as he had done numerous times during his time in Serie A and has no preference as such.

“I don’t have a preference. It is the boss who takes the decisions. I’m comfortable playing on either side.”

There have been times in games where Rasmus Hojlund has not anticipated the early cross while Alejandro Garnacho and Joshua Zirkzee have overlooked his runs.

On training

The wingback explained how Amorim has been talking to him in training to try and help him understand his teammates so that they can build up the connection needed to build attacks in game.

“He talks about the connection with the other players, especially the midfielders and the two No 10s and about making deep runs and on my movement.”

Hopefully, the Danish star and his teammates can come up with the goods against the Basque team as United seek to progress deeper into the competition, which is not only their only shot at silverware but their last chance at an unlikely Champions League qualification for next season.

Man Utd legend shows ‘confidence’ in £72m flop for excelling in ‘normal’ attribute

Manchester United legend Jaap Stam has faith in £72million striker Rasmus Hojlund to turn things around due to his “great physique”, pace and work rate.

Speaking exclusively to Football365 (via CasinoScout.nl), former centre-back Stam discussed Hojlund, head coach Ruben Amorim’s tactics and the form of out-on-loan players like Jadon Sancho, Antony and Marcus Rashford.

Hojlund has been in abysmal form for Man Utd this season, scoring two goals in 28 domestic matches.

Asked if the 22-year-old Dane can turn things around to become the club’s long-term first-choice striker, Stam praised his physical attributes and passed some of the blame onto the creative players around him.

READ MORE: The 20 ways Sir Jim Ratcliffe could have made the Neville interview EVEN WORSE

“It’s a difficult one to say if he’s the long-term solution,” he said. “But I think we sometimes forget that he’s very young as well. I think he is a very good player.

“Sometimes if I was him, I would be very annoyed to be on the pitch because as a striker you need to have the delivery as well. So people need to give you the ball at the right times as well.

“They need to have a look at him, what his position is to put those crosses in as well. And there’s a lot of games that we’ve played that sometimes he’s in the right position, he’s in good positions and they’re not crossing these balls into the box as well for him to have the opportunity to score.

“Then, like I said before, there’s always people talking about him that he’s not scoring. But it’s very difficult for him at times as well, that if you’re in a good position, you don’t get it, then you can’t score.

“So as a number nine, it’s very important that the wingers or the wingbacks put that delivery in the box and then they know where you are. So you eventually have the opportunity to create a chance yourself or to score a goal as well. And I think that makes it difficult for a striker.

“What a lot of people do is they all look at him and they say, ‘Okay, we’ve got a number nine and he is working very hard because he’s putting all the energy into it. But he’s not scoring goals.’ No. But if you don’t get the ball, then it’s very difficult to score goals isn’t it?

“But that’s the same for other strikers too. If you look at Joshua Zirkzee, he found it very difficult in that position as well. You know, because then he gets that long ball and then he needs to fight with Gabriel or [William] Saliba and it’s very difficult to win these battles. And that’s the same with Hojlund at times as well.

“Because they play that ball up to him and then he needs to battle with the big centre backs and sometimes he wins, but there’s a big possibility that he’s gonna be losing these battles as well. And that’s what you see. And it’s difficult to hold that ball up if there’s no support. If people are not supporting him or coming underneath so he can play that one-two.

“So it’s a difficult job to be a number nine now for United. And I think I still have the confidence because when I see him, I see he’s got great physique, he’s got pace as well and he’s working very hard. He’s putting all the effort in there as well. And that’s normal of course, for a player in every position to work very hard.

“I think he’s got the ability to score as well, and he’s proven that in other games as well. When Ten Hag was there, he showed that he can score goals. But I think for him and for the other players, it’s trying to find a way to get the best out of all the forwards, more or less.”

Man Utd boss Amorim has been criticised for persisting with his three-at-the-back formation but Stam insists it looked pretty successful against Arsenal on Sunday.

“It worked quite well (against Arsenal). In the second half, United played better compared to the first half. In the first half, Arsenal were dominant and they pushed United back and Arsenal didn’t create a lot of opportunities, but they were the better side.

“In terms of possession, they were by far the better team. And in the second half, it changed. I think the 1-0 lead gave United a bit of confidence as well, which was good.

“In the second half they pushed forward, they were more on the front foot as well, going forward and they created some good chances. But If you look at the second half, it looked promising for United.

“That’s the thing with this United team, we spoke about that several times because sometimes when United needs to play big teams and important games, then they can get themselves into a certain focus that they can do well.

“It’s about being consistent throughout the whole season and that’s very important and they still have some difficulty in doing that, but Amorim is very persistent in his set up playing three at the back, while a lot of these players came when Erik ten Hag was still the manager, playing in a 4-3-3 system, which is of course different in build-up and also in putting pressure on the opposition at times as well.

“You can see that some of the players find it difficult at times to find their position to be creative at times and to use their strengths. And they need to get used to this system. And I think that’s normal because that comes with a new manager that arrives with a new system as well.

“Sometimes as a manager you also need to look at the team, you also need to look at the players that you have and how to use them in the best way. So eventually you can get as many points as you need to eventually make certain changes to fit the system that you want to play.

“He’s very persistent in keeping this system up and playing this system. You can see that sometimes they find it very difficult in games that other teams aren’t even dominating against United in possession. That’s what most of the fans and pundits/analysts are not used to seeing where the opposition is dominating.

“We always want to have United going forward and putting the pressure on the opposition and being dominant themselves to eventually score goals and win as many games as you can.”

Man Utd’s transfer business over the years has been notoriously poor and it has been made worst by big-money flops leaving Old Trafford to thrive elsewhere.

Antony and Rashford are two players shining after securing a loan departure in January and Stam thinks their failure at United could be down to pressure.

“Well, the reason can be that there’s too much pressure on them. Because the demands for playing for United is too much at times, it’s too hard and they want to prove themselves and that’s why they make it difficult at times for themselves to not get everything out of it.

“Having said that, I think joining a club like United must be a privilege as well for a player. If you get into certain situations, for instance, for the wingers, if you have the opportunity to take players on, in a 1v1, then you need to do that as well.

“Sometimes you see with Rashford and Antony –  they have that ball, there’s big spaces and they don’t take the defender on. They go back, cut it back, play that ball into midfield players. [Jadon] Sancho as well and then they’re leaving the club.

“They go to a different team now and for a couple of games they do well, but they perform for like three, four games they’re doing well, man of the match or scoring goals or assisting or whatever. But they need to keep it up for several seasons.

“It’s hard to judge players now for like a couple of games. Because in the beginning it’s new for every player. As you go somewhere they’re all willing to run, cover the pitch to defend, track back and create maybe, and it’s all new, but after a while things will settle down.

“Then the manager’s going to be making choices and then you need to wait and see in six months, how the situation is then, and are the players then still stepping up and still delivering. Then after a while, because the opposition then is learning how these new players are playing as well.

“So they’re going to be treated differently, they’re going to defend differently against them as well after a while. And then you need to have a look. Okay, what’s the real situation with them?”

Amorim sack? Man Utd ‘officials’ reveal stance in ‘private’ admission as Ratcliffe’s confidant drops ‘risk’ claim

A new report has revealed Manchester United’s stance on sacking Ruben Amorim following his difficult start to life at Old Trafford.

Former Sporting Lisbon boss Amorim left the Portuguese outfit to replace Erik ten Hag at Man Utd after they made a dismal start to the 2024/25 campaign.

Ten Hag was lucky to keep his job after their miserable 2023/24 campaign, as Man Utd‘s shock FA Cup final triumph over Man City saved him.

Man Utd’s Premier League struggles from last season have carried over into this campaign, but they have performed worse under Amorim than during Ten Hag’s reign.

United’s squad are not suited to Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 system, so it’s hardly surprising that he has struggled to implement his chosen formation.

READ: Who will be the next Man Utd manager if Ruben Amorim is sacked?

Amorim has only won ten of his 26 matches in all competitions as his side have produced several woeful performances.

Man Utd are languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League and have also exited the FA Cup, while they have work to do in their second leg against Real Sociedad to reach the Europa League quarter-finals.

United’s woeful run of results since November leave Amorim as one of the favourites to be the next Premier League manager sacked, but BBC reporter Simon Stone claims he still has ‘backing’.

Stone has revealed Man Utd’s ‘private’ stance on Amorim, who is reportedly set to be given planet of time to turn things around.

‘Amid all the words that been spoken about Manchester United from various senior figures over the last couple of days, one thing has come across loud and clear; head coach Ruben Amorim is going nowhere.’

‘With United teetering on the brink of their worst season since the 1973-74 relegation campaign and, by his own admission, Amorim has found it difficult to get his ideas across, there had been suggestions the former Sporting coach might be in trouble.

‘My understanding is that is not the case. Privately, United officials say they want to get out of the cycle of recruiting managers that last a couple of years and then run out of ideas. Amorim is here to stay.’

United chief executive has explained why he “doesn’t see risk” with Amorim.

“I think it’s riskier if you have a coach that doesn’t have a clear idea of how he wants to play. With Ruben we don’t see that risk,” Berrada said.

“When it comes to our recruitment strategy, without commenting too much, the idea we have is to be able to bring in versatile players that can be adaptable to multiple systems.

“Ruben himself has said it’s not about the 3-4-3 tactical formation, it’s about an idea, a concept of how he wants to see the team playing.

“He wants to see the team playing more on the front foot, more of a possession, attacking-based style of football. So for that, you need players that can play in multiple positions that can adapt to that vision that Ruben has.

“And this is what we’re going try to do over the next years in our recruitment.”

Man United still hope to tie down £79m midfielder amid fierce contract standoff – report

Manchester United are determined to keep hold of young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo despite contract talks faltering, according to reports.

The 19-year-old’s current £20,000-a-week deal expires in June next year leaving his future up in the air, and clubs such as Chelsea are said to be circling the gifted teenager.

After a winter transfer window full of rumours of United cashing in on the Carrington graduate, the club are now trying to tie him down with a long-term contract with much improved terms.

But worrying claims from Football Insider suggest that Mainoo is “ready to reject the offer of a new Old Trafford contract and seek a move overseas.”

The report continues that United won’t go down without a fight, and “have not given up hope of keeping Mainoo around”, but the overall narrative is far from positive.

Football Insider report that the Red Devils will keep pushing for a new deal with the player until the end of the season, but should no agreement be reached the academy graduate may be on his way out of Old Trafford.

Reports in Spain earlier this week indicated that Chelsea are ready to take advantage of the situation and swoop in with a £79m offer.

Despite a desire to keep hold of Mainoo, United’s well-documented financial struggles and need for a squad rebuild might make a bumper bid tempting for decision-makers.

But for fans, losing the teenager would be a disaster – both in terms of his loss to the team and the wider picture it paints of the state of the club.

Mainoo exploded onto the scene under Erik ten Hag last season and the supremely talented midfielder has been a United feelgood story when not much else has gone to plan.

It is believed that the player would choose to move abroad rather than join a Premier League rival due to the connection with the Red Devils.

But a teenage England international with the world at his feet looking for a way out from his boyhood club points to deep-seated issues behind the scenes.

Mainoo is currently sidelined with an injury and did not immediately pin down a role in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 system, although turned in a few impressive performances under the Portuguese, particularly thriving further forward.

Joe has spent more than half his life writing about football and all of it following United. As a child he told a doctor his name was ‘Paul Scholes’, but could never pick a pass like him no matter how much he tried.

“He has really convinced me:” national team manager blown away by what United rising star “has achieved defensively”

Denmark manager Brian Riemer has revealed his true feelings about Manchester United full-back Patrick Dorgu.

“He has really convinced me,” Riemer told Tipsbladet. “I dare to tell you now that I was a bit skeptical in Lecce, because when I watched the games, he was more of a winger than a back, and his defensive skills were… debatable.”

Since his move to Man United, Dorgu has proven Riemer wrong. “But I have seen him many times now, and I am actually quite impressed with what he has achieved defensively.”

“Defensively, my doubts were there, and there he has convinced me. He has done it strongly. There are still small things that can be done better, but even in the best league in the world he has delivered,” the Denmark boss declared.

While United had a quiet January transfer window, Riemer remains convinced that manager Ruben Amorim brought the right defender to Old Trafford.

“I know they [United] play with a wingback, but many times he has ended up as a full-back, and that is why I have had him under the microscope and looked at how he defends. The situations I have analysed have convinced me that he can do both,” the Danish manager admitted.

Since his arrival at Old Trafford in January, Dorgu has received a slew of praise for his performances despite the challenge of playing in the Premier League.

Teammate Christian Eriksen heaped praise onto the 20 year old, voicing his belief that the rising star will excel at United.

Another figure who has expressed his confidence in Dorgu is none other than his manager, Ruben Amorim, who stated that the youngster is playing exceptionally well very soon after his move.

Even after Dorgu picked up a controversial red card during the 3-2 win over Ipswich Town in February, Amorim rallied to his side, insisting that Dorgu is ready for the Premier League in an effort to silence doubters.

What’s more, Dorgu’s decent form is evident in his performance statistics. In three Premier League outings, Dorgu has averaged a massive three tackles per game while winning a whopping 70% of his total duels, including 74% of his ground battles. (Sofascore)

Although United’s transfers over the past few seasons have been a mixed bag, Dorgu has proven to be a great asset to the team and a prudent transfer target by Amorim, who has clearly gotten his transfer strategy off to the right start since taking the helm at United.

United enter whirlwind battle to sign star PL winger as Liverpool, Chelsea, Bayern, and PSG express interest – report

Manchester United’s summer transfer plans are appearing to take form, with the club looking to sign Kaoru Mitoma.

With Marcus Rashford appearing increasingly likely to depart Old Trafford at the end of the season and both Antony and Jadon Sancho out on loan, Man United will surely be looking to increase their squad depth on the wing.

Several wingers have already been linked to United ahead of the summer transfer window, including Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo and Sporting CP’s Francisco Trincao, who achieved significant success under United manager Ruben Amorim when he still led the Portuguese club.

Now, it appears as if the club’s interest has been shifted to Brighton & Hove Albion winger Mitoma. Still, Brighton don’t seem to be willing to lose of the Japanese winger without a fight.

“According to the latest from sources close to the situation, Brighton are now closing in on a new contract for star winger Kaoru Mitoma, as they hope to tie him down to a new deal valid until 2030,” CaughtOffside reported today.

“Sources have also told CaughtOffside that Mitoma has interest from Man Utd, Liverpool and Chelsea, as well as from European giants Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain, while Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr have also previously made efforts to sign him.”

“Mitoma is understood to be valued at around €55m by Brighton, and they should soon be in a strong position over the 27-year-old’s future,” the article concluded.

In 28 Premier League appearances this season, Mitoma has scored seven goals and produced three assists. He has averaged 1.1 key passes per game. (Sofascore)

This isn’t the first time that United have been linked with the Brighton winger, however.

In December, United were believed to be considering Mitoma as a potential candidate to replace Rashford, although no deal was concluded.

Of course, even if United are serious about Mitoma, it could prove challenging for the club to sign him ahead of a huge host of competitors.

Unless the demand for Mitoma wanes as the transfer window approaches, it may be best for United to pass over him for an alternative target. After all, with so many elite clubs expressing an interest in him, Mitoma’s expected €55m valuation is unlikely to remain static once a heated transfer race gets underway.
