Blockbuster battle between United, City on the cards for €50m superstar who is a perfect fit for Amorim’s system – report

Ruben Amorim needed to bring in quality for the wingback positions, so Manchester United went out and secured Patrick Dorgu’s signature in January.

The Danish star can play on both flanks but given he is left-footed, the Portuguese is likely to use him on the left while for now, Diogo Dalot is playing on the right flank.

But the Portugal international is not a wingback which is exactly why the head coach wants to bring in Geovany Quenda from his former club Sporting CP.

There is also interest in Braga’s Roger Fernandes with Teamtalk now revealing that the Red Devils are also keeping their eye on Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong.

Frimpong back on the radar

The Dutch star has been a long-term target for the Old Trafford side with the 24-year-old scoring thrice and registering 10 assists this term.

It has not been as productive a season as last time out with the wingback netting 14 times while adding 10 assists as well while in the 22/23 season, he had nine goals to his name and 10 assists.

His consistent displays have attracted the interest of not only both Manchester giants but also Real Madrid and Barcelona with the Netherlands international looking to leave Germany in the summer.

“Manchester United and Manchester City are set to duke it out for Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimong but face major competition for his services, TEAMtalk can reveal.

Huge race on

“Now, TEAMtalk can reveal that both teams are tracking Leverkusen’s Frimpong, as are Barcelona and Real Madrid.

“We understand that the Dutch international will leave the reigning German champions this summer and Xabi Alonso’s side are already looking at alternatives to the former Celtic man.”

Frimpong’s attacking style suits Amorim’s gameplan to the T and it will be interesting to see if United can beat their rivals to his signature.

The former Manchester City academy graduate’s market value stands at €50 million with his deal with Leverkusen valid until 2028.

With a striker and a midfielder also on Amorim’s agenda, it remains to be seen if such an extensive outlay is possible in the summer.

3 key passes, 96% pass accuracy, 1 assist: rejuvenated United star runs riot for loan club in huge victory

Manchester United loanee Marcus Rashford produced another top performance, to help Aston Villa advance to the quarter-finals of the Champions League after they saw off off 10-man Club Brugge.

Villa were leading 3-1 from the first leg and they left nothing to chance, easing their way into the last eight with a 3-0 home victory courtesy of two goals from half-time substitute Marco Asensio and one from Ian Maatsen.

Rashford was impactful, setting up one of Asensio’s goals and drawing the first-half foul which saw Brugge defender Kyriani Sabbe given his marching orders.

The Carrington academy graduate was named in the starting XI and repaid the faith of Unai Emery in kind with a stellar display.

Rashford endured a slow start, but as the game progressed, he found his rhythm and lit up the second half with electrifying energy. He completed all 90 minutes.

Beyond his assist, the forward touched the ball 64 times and successfully found his teammates with 46 of the 48 passes he attempted (96% pass accuracy). Three of his passes were key passes.

He delivered some fantastic balls inside the box but none of his teammates managed to get on the end of any of them.

Rashford created one big chance and fired two shots – one was on target while the other didn’t test Brugge goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.

The United man completed one of the five dribbles he embarked on. He went in for seven ground duels and came out on top three times.

Rashford also made two clearances and put in half as many tackles.

Villa face a formidable challenge in their next Champions League clash against high-flyers Paris Saint-Germain, who knocked Liverpool out of the competition on Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, United are back in action on Thursday when they take on Real Sociedad in the return leg of their Europa League round of 16 tie.

Man Utd dealt huge Marcus Rashford ‘pay-off’ blow as reason for Villa star’s ‘cut-price’ exit ‘fee’ surfaces

Manchester United have been dealt a blow regarding Marcus Rashford as the Aston Villa loanee is ‘set to go for a cut-price fee’ this summer.

Rashford left Man Utd during the winter transfer window to join Premier League rivals Aston Villa on loan with an option to buy in the summer for around £40m.

The England international’s form for United severely declined after he scored 30 goals in all competitions during the 2022/23 campaign.

It was hoped that Ruben Amorim’s arrival would boost Rashford, but the pair butted heads en route to the forward’s exit in January.

Rashford announced his intention to leave Man Utd at the end of 2024 and was linked with several European giants before he accepted a move to Aston Villa.

The 27-year-old’s dire form and huge salary proved major stumbling blocks for FC Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund but Aston Villa took a punt on him after they sold Jhon Duran to Al Nassr in one of the month’s most expensive deals.

Rashford has been eased into the fold by head coach Unai Emery but he’s sparkled in flashes, grabbing three assists in his eight appearances.

It remains to be seen whether Aston Villa will sign Rashford permanently this summer, but a report from The Daily Mail has revealed why he’s ‘set to go’ leave Man Utd for a reduced fee.

The report explains:

‘If the cost of rebuilding United’s squad wasn’t steep enough, Confidential understands that the club could bank as little as £20m from selling Marcus Rashford this summer.

‘Rashford is on loan at Aston Villa who are paying a minimum of 75 per cent of his £315,000-a-week wages until June 30 and have an option to buy him in a permanent deal for £40m.’

‘Other clubs could get Rashford for the same price but none of them – including Villa – are likely to match his current salary, which was given to the Wythenshawe-born star at the height of Paris Saint-Germain’s interest in him and has more than three years to run.

‘United would have to give Rashford a pay-off to make up for the drop in wages, which insiders believe would be in the region of £20m – halving the figure they would receive as a transfer fee.’

Man Utd co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has given his verdict on Rashford’s January exit, saying: “He’s moved out of Manchester and maybe that’s a good thing for him. I am very pleased he is doing well.

“It’s good to see because he has got tremendous talent, but for whatever reason it wasn’t working in Manchester for the past couple of seasons. But he is a very talented footballer, Rashford.”

Man Utd ‘intend’ to make £110m ‘investment’ in two Real Madrid stars as Amorim ‘wants’ starter ‘out’

Man Utd want to sign two Real Madrid players in the summer transfer window as Sir Jim Ratcliffe earmarks major investment, according to reports.

The Red Devils have been having a terrible time of it this season with Ruben Amorim’s side currently 14th in the Premier League table with only 10 matches to play.

Man Utd have won just five of their 17 Premier League fixtures under the Portuguese head coach with results and performances even worse than under predecessor Erik ten Hag, who was sacked at the end of October.

Amorim has struggled to get his players to adjust to his playing style, philosophy and tactics, while he was afforded just one January transfer window signing in the form of Patrick Dorgu.

It’s clear that his current squad aren’t suited to the tactics Amorim wants to employ and it will now be an important summer transfer window giving the Man Utd boss the players he needs.

And Spanish website Fichajes insists Man Utd ‘wants to sign two Real Madrid stars’ and that the Red Devils ‘intend’ to make a ‘multi-million investment’ in Andriy Lunin – who is reportedly valued at around €40m (£33m) and Aurelien Tchouameni.

Man Utd ‘believe both players can provide immediate solutions in positions where they have struggled this season and are willing to make a significant offer to convince Real Madrid’.

The report adds:

‘Lunin’s situation has caught the attention of the Old Trafford club due to André Onana’s inconsistent performance.

‘The Ukrainian has demonstrated his quality when given opportunities at Real Madrid, but with Thibaut Courtois’ return from injury, his role as a substitute could reinforce his decision to look for a new destination.

‘Manchester United see him as a reliable option to strengthen their goalkeeping and avoid the problems that have arisen in goalkeeping during the season.

‘On the other hand, the interest in Tchouaméni responds to the English club’s need to strengthen its midfield with an elite player. Despite the Frenchman’s difficult start in Madrid, he has managed to establish himself as a key player in Carlo Ancelotti’s scheme.

‘The English club is reportedly willing to invest around €80m (£67m) for his signing, a figure that would allow the Merengues to recoup their investment in 2022.’

There are doubts that Man Utd will be able to convince Real Madrid to part with Tchouameni but the Red Devils ‘remain insistent’ on their desire to sign both players.

Man Utd goalkeeper Onana has come in for a lot of criticism this season and there have been reports that Amorim ‘wants him out now’ as they approach the summer.

Former Man Utd winger Lee Sharpe is not convinced about Onana either and reckons the Cameroonian is impacting on the confidence of his team-mates.

Sharpe said: “I’m still not sure about the goalkeeper.

“You want your goalkeeper to be safe, to be consistent and you sort of need to understand him a little bit. But at the moment, I’m not sure what Onana’s doing. He’s letting in some silly goals and making some silly mistakes. We know he can play a little bit, he’s got great feet and he can ping the ball around. But the first job of a goalkeeper is to keep the ball out of the back of the net and that’s a nigh-on impossible job for him.

“With a change in back-three and back-five all the time, it’s really hard for the goalkeeper to get any connection and understanding with his defenders, but he’s got to start doing a lot better.

“You can’t have outfield players working so hard, trying to get results and then the goalkeeper just throws one in and just kills everybody’s spirit. Everybody’s head drops down, confidence goes…so yeah, you need him to be trustworthy, reliable and consistent and he’s not being that at the moment. But I’m sure he’s got that in him.”

United’s futuristic training complex nears completion, even Ronaldo would approve

Manchester United have reportedly earmarked a date for the opening of their new and revamped Carrington training complex.

United announced plans to modernise the men’s first team building at Carrington in June last year.

The club announced that the intention of the refurbishment was to “create a high-performance collaborative environment for players and staff.”

First opened in 2000, the overhaul of Carrington was estimated to cost a whooping £50million.

United enlisted the services of Foster + Partners, the London firm led by award-winning architect Lord Norman Foster. Foster is also spearheading the Old Trafford regeneration project.

Now, The Telegraph reveal that United are keen on opening the facility on July 31.

According to James Ducker, “United’s revamped £50 million Carrington training ground is due to open and be fully operational from July 31.”

“The site is currently undergoing a significant transformation and, while it is not certain to be fully finished in time for the start of pre-season in early July, works are expected to have been completed by the end of that month.”

“Amorim and his squad will be in a position to use the facility once they return from the club’s pre-season tour of the United States in early August.”

Carrington is expected to undergo a full interior overhaul, with Foster+Partners aiming to create a more streamlined design for the gym, medical, nutrition, and recovery areas.

This latest development comes a day after United announced ambitious plans to build a new £2bn 100,000-capacity stadium close to their current home at Old Trafford.

United want to complete the new stadium in five years, with the plan being to build large parts off-site before shipping it to the Old Trafford site via the Manchester ship canal.

The 20-time English champions are back in action on Thursday when they face Real Sociedad in the second leg of their Europa League round of 16 tie.

Man Utd: Amorim responds to Ratcliffe ‘overpaid and not good enough’ claim amid ‘really blunt’ talks

Ruben Amorim has responded to Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s claim this week that several Manchester United are either “overpaid or not good enough” ahead of his side’s clash with Real Sociedad.

The tie is evenly poised at 1-1 ahead of the clash at Old Trafford and United must overcome the Spanish side if they’re to keep their season alive, as well as their hopes of securing European football next season.

With Amorim’s side out of both domestic cups and sitting in 14th place in the Premier League, the Europa League is their only route to glory this season.

READ MORE: Sir Jim Ratcliffe: Fact-checking the Man Utd co-owner’s interview bullsh*t

The game comes against the backdrop of Ratcliffe’s interviews with Gary Neville on The Overlap, the BBC and various other media outlets this week.

He talked a whole lot of nonsense, but also made the very reasonable claim that some of the United players are not fit to wear the shirt or at least should be paid a whole lot less for doing so, name-checking five stars in the process.

Asked for his thoughts on Ratcliffe’s comments, Amorim said he believes he and his players can change opinions on their suitability for United by winning games.

“If you’re a top player playing in this club, even me – a lot of people say I am not good enough for the club – my feeling is that you can change that with results,” said Amorim.

“In training, I feel that they want this really bad. This game is also important to give us more energy to continue the season.

“It’s not going to change a lot in terms of the ideas for the next season, but it will give us more energy to finish the season in a different way. So it’s going to be a really important game for us.”

On his relationship with Ratcliffe, Amorim said: “It’s really good, since day one. I think we’re really blunt and honest with each other. It’s a little bit our characters, we are quite similar in that sense.

“I always felt the support of the board, especially from Sir Jim. I cannot tell you the conversations, but they are simple conversations, clear conversations and honest conversations.”

Ratcliffe hailed Amorim as an “outstanding young manager” who he believes is doing an “excellent job”, while chief executive Omar Berrada said he would like to see the Portuguese boss lead United into their £2bn stadium in five years’ time.

On the support from the United hierarchy, Amorim said: “I already knew that, from all these conversations I already had in the past with them. After matches, they went to the dressing-room to talk to me and explain this, but to say it publicly is really good for the coach.

“But I continue to say the same thing – we need results and we need to improve the team. But from day one, I felt the support from everybody here.”

Speaking about United’s bold new stadium plan, Amorim said: “It’s an amazing stadium, like it should be. But it’s in the future, five years from now. We have to focus on the present and I’m really excited to win things in Old Trafford, that’s our focus.”

“That is a risk”: Berrada admits grave United concern after new stadium announcement, it’s the ultimate fear for fans

Manchester United chief executive Omar Berrada has admitted that the club are at risk of being less competitive after moving into a new 100,000-seater stadium.

On Tuesday, United announced plans to build the biggest stadium in the UK next to Old Trafford.

Since becoming a minority owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been steadfast in his stance that United need a new state-of-the-art ground – comments he reiterated in a recent interview.

United released architectural designs for the new stadium at an event in London. The project, undertaken in conjunction with a government regeneration task force chaired by Lord Sebastian Coe, has been developed by Foster + Partners.

Foster + Partners have released design images of what the stadium and surrounding area could look like, and an intention to build it in 5 years.

— BBC Sport (@BBCSport) March 11, 2025

During the announcement, Ratcliffe said the new ground would be the “world’s greatest” football stadium.

Berrada and United’s chief operating officer, Collete Roche, spoke to the media and gave more details on United’s stadium plans.

The Red Devils are hoping to move into a new stadium for the 2030/31 season and the project is estimated to cost a whooping £2bn.

In his remarks, Berrada also acknowledged that there’s a real risk of United not being competitive once their new iconic home is ready. After Arsenal moved from Highbury to the Emirates in 2006, the North London outfit did not win silverware until the FA Cup in 2014. The Gunners were last crowned Premier League champions 20 years ago.

It’s been a similar tale with Tottenham Hotspur, who last claimed a major trophy in 2019. Spurs moved into their current stadium in 2019.

Asked about this, Berrada said [as quoted by Manchester Evening News], “That is a risk. Clearly, it’s something we want to avoid. We don’t want to inhibit our ability to invest in the team, for us to continue being competitive while we are building a new stadium.”

“There are various ways around that. One of the things we are looking at is to shorten the construction timelines so we can have a new stadium within five years, that’s our ambition.”

“In the meantime, by getting our finances back in order and becoming profitable, we believe that we can be very competitive. The big, big benefit that this club has is that it has the biggest fanbase in the world and therefore the ability to be the number one in terms of revenues that it generates.”

Berrada explained that public money will not be used to construct the new stadium.

“We won’t be asking for taxpayer money to fund the stadium. But, at the same time, the stadium, the new build, in isolation, does not make sense if there’s not an investment in the wider generation project.”

“Why £2bn? Since Spurs built their stadium (in 2019) and Real Madrid (in 2024), there has been a high inflation. Energy prices have gone up. Inflation has impacted all areas of the economy. That’s been factored into the cost of the stadium.”

“What you heard yesterday, and the plans that have been put in place, the goal that we have is to become the most profitable club within the next two years. And we want to do that whilst we continue to invest in our squad. So that’s the goal for the next two or three years. Once you become profitable, then everything else becomes more manageable and it also allows us to be able to invest in the future, which is what this stadium is about.”

Roche quipped, “As we said at the start, we as a club are going to pay for the new stadium in terms of the bricks and mortar. But we do appreciate there is a lot of enabling work and infrastructure work in and around, and that has always been our understanding.”

“I think what Jim said is that it’s all predicated on planning permission and how quickly the local authority can work. We’re looking at ways we can work with them to make it as smooth and quick as possible. One of the things we are establishing is a mayoral development corporation, you’ll have heard, that gives a lot of rights to speed these things through.”

She added, “You also heard today that Jim mentioned us potentially doing some pre-fabrication. So that means we can do a lot of the enabling work and start to design and build the pieces in advance of having to do anything on the ground in Old Trafford.”

“Yes is the short answer, it could be done quite quickly as long as the local council and government supports us in that and moves it forward.”

The biggest debate at the moment is who will foot the £2bn bill and according to Berrada, all options are on the table. The United chief expressed confidence that a solution will eventually be found.

“We think it is quite a unique opportunity in the world of football for such an iconic stadium of the size that we’re talking about to be built. So we think we will have an enormous amount of partnership opportunities. Ultimately, we like brands that can help us to improve the fan experience within the stadium. Whether that integration comes with the stadium naming rights opportunity or not, it needs to be discussed.”

“It’s too early to say at this stage (if Old Trafford will remain in the name). What we do know is that there is already an enormous amount of interest in big brands wanting to associate their brands with ours and the new stadium. You can have a sponsor for the fan zone and sponsors for certain hospitality areas.”

Berrada pointed out United’s need for caution in disclosing revenue forecasts due to its publicly listed status. However, he noted that initial business planning suggests a substantial increase in EBITA (earnings before interest, taxes, and amortisation), with projections potentially reaching between £120 million and £130 million.

The United chief executive further stated, “The way the club was tracking, with all the losses that have been accumulated – more than £300million in the last five years – was not sustainable. So all the plans we’ve been putting in place over the last months really address the short-term issue, which is that the club was losing money.”

“Once we stop losing money, we then put ourselves in the best financial position to continue investing in our team and also to allow us to be able to have the ambition to build a new stadium.”

Berrada explained that it’s “unlikely” Old Trafford will be preserved once the new stadium is ready, even with a reduced capacity.

However, United will still be able to play at Old Trafford at full capacity while construction is underway.

Roche said about this, “The build will be done in a phased way to allow that to be the last part. But circulation is critical from a safety perspective and we wouldn’t be able to operate that stadium and build the other one without making sure that’s in place. But it’s feasible and that’s why we were able to show the designs at this early stage.”

In his interview with Gary Neville, Ratciffe confirmed that ticket prices will increase next season. Berrada addressed this, relaying that United will remain in consultation with fan groups regarding pricing.

United are back in action on Thursday when they face Real Sociedad in the second leg of their Europa League round of 16 clash.

Man Utd: National boss slams ‘not good enough’ star as teammate’s selection a mere ‘compromise’

Rasmus Hojlund’s woeful form for Manchester United is “not a worry” for Denmark boss Brian Riemer but one of his teammates has been dropped and given a dressing down.

Hojlund has now failed to score in 20 consecutive games for United and was name-checked by Sir Jim Ratcliffe ahead of the co-owner pointing out that several Red Devils stars are “overpaid or not good enough”.

He’s been heavily linked with the exit this summer as a result as Amorim seeks added firepower in attack, but has still been called up for this month’s Nations League quarter-final with Portugal.

Riemer insists Hojlund is a “strong character” but admits his selection is something of a “compromise”.

He said: “Rasmus Hojlund’s form speaks for itself. I can’t say anything else, because you know the numbers. I would prefer to select a team where the players are bursting with self-confidence and in top form.

“But sometimes you also have to compromise. My job is to find the balance of how many of those who are not in top form I can select. I think Rasmus Hojlund really benefits from coming here and getting some national love.”

Riemer revealed that he’s been in “close contact” with Hojlund through a dry spell that he fully expects the striker to come out the other side of at Old Trafford.

He added: “I’m not worried at all. Rasmus is a strong character. I’ve been in close contact with him. I’ve been in this game for many years. That’s football. It goes up and down. I don’t know any striker who hasn’t been in scoring crises. When he scored seven goals in six games in a row [last season for Manchester United], we were all ready with a 100-year contract.

“That’s football. Suddenly the boil pops up again, and then we’ve forgotten what happened. Rasmus is an important part of our team. With the qualities he possesses in terms of scoring goals and participating in our pressing game, we are happy to have him with us for the two upcoming international matches.”

That vote of confidence given to Hojlund is at odds with with Ronald Koeman’s explanation for Joshua Zirkzee being dropped for the Netherlands’ quarter-final against Spain.

“He wasn’t in the preliminary selection because I don’t think he’s good enough at the moment,” Koeman told Studio Voetbal. “Especially scanning when turning or passing often goes wrong.

“Yes, in principle form and fitness are always leading, but that is not always possible. We have a lot of central defenders and midfielders, but we are somewhat limited up front.

“But even then, I still think that you have to earn your selection, and I think he doesn’t deserve that now, but that could be the case again in another period.”

“Suddenly the boil pops up again and…”: National team boss defends baffling call-up of struggling United star

Denmark manager Brian Riemer has said that Rasmus Hojlund’s track record with the national team “speaks for itself,” as he explained why he called him up despite his woes at Manchester United.

Arguably no United player has endured a more troubling season on a personal level than Hojlund.

He is currently on a 20-game goal drought, having last found the back of the net in the Europa League group stage meeting with Viktoria Plzen.

In 37 games across all competitions this term, the 22-year-old has managed just seven goals and one assist. He has scored just twice in the Premier League.

Even beyond getting on the score sheet, Hojlund has struggled with the basics of leading the line, including holding up the ball and linking up play. However, Riemer still called Hojlund up for Denmark ahead of their upcoming fixtures this month.

Riemer spoke to Ekstra Bladet [via SportWitness] and indicated that Hojlund’s selection was not based on his United form over the past several weeks.

The 46-year-old coach said, “Rasmus Højlund’s form speaks for itself. I can’t say anything else, because you know the numbers.”

“I would prefer to select a team where the players are bursting with self-confidence and in top form. But sometimes you also have to compromise. My job is to find the balance of how many of those who are not in top form I can select.”

“I think Rasmus Højlund really benefits from coming here and getting some national love.”

Asked whether he’s worried by Hojlund’s situation at Old Trafford, Riemer answered, “I’m not worried at all. Rasmus is a strong character. I’ve been in close contact with him.”

“I’ve been in this game for many years. That’s football. It goes up and down. I don’t know any striker who hasn’t been in scoring crises.”

He added, “When he scored seven goals in six games in a row [last season for Manchester United], we were all ready with a 100-year contract. That’s football. Suddenly the boil pops up again, and then we’ve forgotten what happened.”

“Rasmus is an important part of our team. With the qualities he possesses in terms of scoring goals and participating in our pressing game, we are happy to have him with us for the two upcoming international matches.”

Riemer’s backing should certainly bode well for Hojlund as he aims to get his confidence back and start firing for the season run-in.

Wayne Rooney reveals he came dangerously close to signing United star who’s been “a breath of fresh air” this season

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has revealed that he was very close to signing Amad during his time in the Derby County dugout.

Before sustaining a serious injury last month, Amad’s form was one of the few bright points for United during an immensely difficult season. In 35 appearances across all competitions, Amad managed nine goals and seven assists.

He also signed a new contract in January, committing his future to the club until 2030.

It was thought that Amad’s injury would keep him out for the rest of the campaign but Ruben Amorim recently expressed hope that the forward could make a late comeback in the final weeks.

Rooney sat down with club media and spoke about Amad, divulging that he nearly signed him when he was Derby boss.

However, a transfer never materialised and the Ivorian ended up joining Rangers instead on a six-month loan – a year after arriving at Old Trafford from Atalanta.

Rooney said about the United N.o 16, “I think he’s been great. I tried to sign him for Derby, when I was at Derby, on loan. I thought I had him, really. I think it was the next day, he went to Rangers out of the blue.”

“He has been fantastic, with the goals he’s scored, [his] creativity and work-rate. He’s been a breath of fresh air and, of course, we’d like a few more players to step up.”

United’s record goalscorer added, “It’s been a difficult season, there’s no denying that, all season. But the new manager has come in and I really like him. The way he handles himself and speaks with the media, he’s been really good.”

“It’s probably more about getting through this season now and, hopefully, starting to implement his style more and getting players in to move the club forward.”

Rooney is among a number of influential figures set to play in Soccer Aid at Old Trafford on Sunday 15 June.

The event is the world’s biggest celebrity football match and seeks to raise money for children around the world.

The former England international told MUTV he is excited to play at the Theatre of Dreams once again, as he also encouraged fans to go out and buy tickets.
