“We’re just really excited:” in-form defender details how United will defeat Real Sociedad in tonight’s crucial clash

Patrick Dorgu appears confident about Manchester United’s prospects ahead of their crucial match against Real Sociedad in the UEFA Europa League tonight.

In the first leg of their round of 16 clash, Man United were unlucky to be held to a 1-1 draw given their dominance throughout most of the affair.

Still, Dorgu does not appear to be prepared to allow the previous disappointing result to affect his confidence ahead of tonight’s showdown.

In conversation with MUTV, Dorgu expressed his excitement for the game while also sharing his understanding of how United can get the better of their La Liga opponents.

When asked about what he learned in the first game, Dorgu explained: “We know that they’re really good on the ball and they take their time in possession so we really need to be organised as a team and defend well.”

“Yeah, obviously we wanted to win the first game and we had the chances to do it but, yeah, after their goal the game changed a bit and yeah, I think we’re just really excited to play tomorrow,” the full-back explained.

When asked about the magnitude of the game that lies ahead, Dorgu did not sugarcoat the urgency felt by him and his teammates.

“Yeah, it’s obviously a chance to win silverware so everyone is excited and really wants to win the competition.”

He also took a moment to address his adjustment to life at Old Trafford since joining from Lecce in the January transfer window.

“It’s amazing to play at Old Trafford and we are all excited,” Dorgu said in no uncertain terms. “The fans have been really good and they’re supporting.”

Aside from the drama of receiving a straight red card during the 3-2 win over Ipswich last month, Dorgu has enjoyed a bright start to life at United.

Manager Ruben Amorim has become a staunch admirer of the 20 year old, expressing his belief that Dorgu is ready to impress in high-profile competitions such as the Premier League.

Should United managed to defend well against a composed and calculated Sociedad as Dorgu advised, while also overcoming their attacking woes, fans will be hopeful that Amorim’s team will come away with a desperately needed win to qualify for the Europa League quarterfinals.

Dalot reveals the key to his invaluable availability

Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot has shared the secrets to his remarkable – and invaluable – availability after proudly reaching the milestone of 200 Reds appearances.

So far this season, the Portuguese full-back has featured in 43 of 44 fixtures across all competitions, thanks to his self-described “obsessive” approach to preparation and recovery. It was a similar story in the 2023/24 campaign as well: Dalot appeared in 50 of 52 matches in total, with only goalkeeper Andre Onana bettering his record with 51 outings.

In an era when players are challenged by relentless schedules and more physically demanding games, availability and consistency are priceless attributes to have – which Diogo understands. “I think in top football, especially in today’s game, availability is something that is becoming much more important than probably a few years ago,” he told us ahead of tonight’s match against Real Sociedad.

Diogo is proud to have reached 200 appearances for Manchester United.

“Football is getting a lot more physical, schedules are getting bigger all the time so the amount of games that top clubs have nowadays is really big, so availability is something that I became a little bit obsessed about, which I think made me a better professional and a better athlete as well.

“Ultimately, you become an option for the manager. Then, the probability of you being able to play is a lot higher when the availability is there, so I try to combine that with performance on the pitch. Ultimately, what you do on the pitch will resolve everything, but the availability for me became my first big priority, to be able to play a lot of games for this club.

“Everything that I do when I wake up is to try to be at my best mentally and physically to help the team. Then, on the pitch, it is a game and everything can happen. I always try to give my best, that is common in every game, but ultimately what you do outside of the pitch will try to define if you are able to play for this club or not. Competition for places is high, the quality is really high, so it is a tough place to play but it is the type of place that I love.”

Expanding on his dedication to being a top professional and athlete, Diogo continues: “I think it is massive in my opinion, but every player is different, this is very individual. What can provide results for me might not provide results for you.

“But what I try to pass to my team-mates when they sometimes ask for advice is that, as a football player and an athlete, you need to build this… I am not saying for you to be obsessive about it, but this consciousness, you need to be in the best shape possible, physically and mentally, to be able to play at this level. That is the first step to succeed.

“We know how to play football, we know the quality is there. If you are playing for Manchester United, it is because you have a lot of football qualities. But the rest, the unseen part, I think it is almost as important as that because ultimately it is going to define if you are going to play X amount of games for a club like this.”

Reflecting on his achievement of 200 appearances, Dalot said: “I am extremely proud to be honest, it is something that is a really great milestone for me as an individual and for my career. To be able to play that amount of games for such a big club is something that is hard to explain in words. It has been a tough journey to be able to play that amount of games, but at the same time a really good one that I have tried to enjoy and hopefully it is one that I can continue.

“I think it has been really progressive, as I like things to be in my life. Obviously it started a bit bumpy in the beginning, I was still very young and also trying to get to know my body, trying to develop as a player, but I think as soon as I started to find the consistency, getting more opportunities to play, it has been a really good journey. I remember the times that I played two games in a row, then I was really happy to play five games, 10 games, so little milestones through my journey. I have reached, now, a very good number and it is something I am proud of.”

Man Utd: ‘Pathetic’ Ratcliffe slammed by ‘flabbergasted’ Merson as fans should be ‘fuming’

Paul Merson reckons Manchester United fans will be “fuming” at Sir Jim Ratcliffe after the Manchester United co-owner announced plans for their new stadium.

United announced plans for their new 100,000-seat stadium on Tuesday, which will act as the ‘centrepiece of the regeneration of the Old Trafford area’.

A United statement read: ‘The stadium, and wider regeneration project, have the potential to deliver an additional £7.3bn per year to the UK economy which brings large-scale social and economic benefits to the community and wider region, including the possible creation of 92,000 new jobs, more than 17,000 new homes as well as driving an additional 1.8 million visitors annually.’

Ratcliffe hailed “the start of an incredibly exciting journey” to build “the world’s greatest stadium” but Merson is “flabbergasted”.

He told Sky Sports: “I think it’s pathetic. If I am a Man United fan I would be fuming.

“They are at Old Trafford, they’ve one of the biggest stadiums in the Premier League. I can understand if it’s Chelsea and Chelsea say ‘we want to move stadiums’ because Chelsea get 38,000 and they need to get a bigger stadium to keep living with the big boys.

“But when they’re Man United and they already hold 70-odd thousand and holds more than everybody else, why would you need a new stadium? You need new players, they need a team – and this is what I can’t work out.

“I hear Sir Jim Ratcliffe going ‘this is going to be a stadium and England are going to be able to play here’. Don’t worry about England, don’t worry about the national team, worry about Man United, worry about getting them into the top six, let alone into the Champions League.

“I just can’t believe what I have been seeing over the last couple of days. I am flabbergasted.”

United legend Roy Keane is impressed by the plans but isn’t comfortable with the juxtaposition of Ratcliffe laying off members of staff and refusing to pay for their lunches while announcing the £2bn project.

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Keane said: “He [Jim Ratcliffe] is on about saving money at the club and we know the way that a lot of ex-players have been treated, the fund they had available, the staff that have been at the club for years – on one hand he’s still treating them badly, and I understand it’s a business and you’ve got to try and make the right decisions, but the next day they’re building a £2 billion stadium for their fans around the world. You have to show loyalty to people that have been at the club for years.

“From the business side of it you’d think he knows what he’s talking about but saying that, on one hand they’re getting rid of lots of people and on the other, they’re going to spend £2 billion on a stadium. He can still look after people a little bit better.”

Man Utd transfers: Ten stars on Amorim ‘blacklist’ include £119m ‘key pieces’ in ‘drastic reconfiguration’

Ruben Amorim’s ten-man Manchester United ‘blacklist’ includes two players signed in the summer of 2023 who were tipped to be ‘key pieces’ at Old Trafford.

Ruben Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag at the helm in November but the expected uplift in results and performances hasn’t come to pass.

United sit 14th in the Premier League having been dumped out of both cups, with the Europa League their only remaining chance of silverware this season, with glory in that competition also securing a place in the Champions League next season.

They take on Real Sociedad in the second leg of their last-16 clash on Thursday with the tie evenly poised at 1-1 and Amorim is well aware of the importance of getting through to the quarter-final.

Ahead of the clash at Old Trafford, Amorim said: “This game is also important to give us more energy to continue the season.

“It’s not going to change a lot in terms of the ideas for the next season, but it will give us more energy to finish the season in a different way. So it’s going to be a really important game for us.”

It will also grant Amorim greater funds for a rebuild courtesy of entry into the Champions League, but the club is also looking to make some cash through player sales, with a report in Spain claiming ten players are on the Portuguese head coach’s ‘blacklist’.

Amorim has ‘given the green light to the drastic reconfiguration, with the aim of building a more competitive squad’.

Loaned out trio Antony, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford ‘have no future at Old Trafford’, while Jonny Evans, Tom Heaton and Victor Lindelof will leave in the summer at the end of their contracts.

Experienced midfield pair Casemiro and Christian Eriksen ‘are not included in the club’s plans’ and neither are Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund.

Signed for £55m and £64m respectively in the summer of 2023, the duo ‘promised to be key pieces’ in United’s rebuild but they ‘have not performed at the expected level so their departure is imminent.

Their exits have been signed off by Wane Rooney, who would keep just two of the current stars to fix his former club.

Rooney said: “[On whether there is a way back for this Manchester United team] No, I don’t think so. They look lost. They look scared. Bruno [Fernandes] is the one who keeps producing, he annoys you at times but keeps producing. They need massive changes to the squad, I think 10-15 players need to leave the club. Obviously, they can’t do that, but there is a mentality there where no one is taking responsibility [in the squad].

“[On the players to keep] I’d keep Bruno and [Kobbie] Mainoo. There is a culture at the club where it’s too easy to lose games and the players come out and say, ‘Onto the next one,’ and all that rubbish. Just show some character and fight on the pitch. It’s bad watching, it hurts. Being from Liverpool but spending so many years at United, I want the team to do well, I’ve got my kids in the academy, and it hurts watching them.”

United “back on the attack” as sensational €65m offer knocked back for La Liga star – report

Manchester United have reportedly had a €65 million bid rejected for FC Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong.

United have had major issues in their midfield all season as Manuel Ugarte has been the only consistent player to adapt to Ruben Amorim’s new 3-4-3 formation.

Bruno Fernandes has also continued his fine form but many are unsure whether his future will really lie in a midfield two.

Last year’s breakout star Kobbie Mainoo has been injured for a lot of the season and he has also been heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford as he struggles to agree a new deal with the club.

Therefore, it is likely that United will try to sign a midfielder this summer and Spanish outlet Fichajes have stated that the club have already tried to bring in an old favourite.

The Red Devils have been linked to Frenkie de Jong since Erik ten Hag’s first summer in charge in 2022 but the rumours keep swirling over the Dutchman.

It has been reported that United have “put an offer of €65 million on the table with the intention of securing the midfielder’s services in the upcoming transfer window.”

“Despite the significant sum offered, the Blaugrana have rejected the proposal.”

The club’s board believes feel the player is “fundamental” to the sporting project moving forward and consequently, their priority is to extend his contract beyond 2026 when it is scheduled to run out.

United have tried many times in the past to sign the midfielder and according to the outlet, “they are back on the attack, hoping that Barcelona’s delicate financial situation will facilitate a deal.”

Fichajes admit that any deal would certainly depend on how new contract negotiations go as Barcelona are in no financial position to lose the player on a free next summer, so a decision will need to be made one way or another this year.

Whilst it’s important to relay what the Spanish press are saying and whilst it’s true that the midfield man was very much a target in the past, it does not seem very plausible that Ineos would be making that kind of offer now. They have prioritised younger players who are not on high-end salaries and De Jong at 27 years old and on a reported weekly wage of € 484,615 would seem a strange departure from this philosophy.

Tactical analysis: United must shake this nasty habit in order to save their season vs Real Sociedad

There’s everything to play for tonight as Manchester United host Real Sociedad in the second leg of their UEFA Europa League round of 16 clash.

Last time out, Man United were held to a 1-1 draw by the Spaniards despite dominating the game. Unfortunately, a penalty allowed Sociedad to level the score line late on.

There was not a lot wrong with United’s performance on the night, with Ruben Amorim’s team taking 13 shots and exhibiting plenty of attacking momentum throughout the duration of the first half and for much of the second half before the hosts got onto the front foot in the final 20 minutes or so.

The main issue was that United were unable to score more than one goal. Had they done so, they would have had the cushion they needed to grab a valuable away win and enter tonight’s match with added confidence.

Last weekend, United produced another impressive display when they held their own against a high-flying Arsenal in another 1-1 affair.

It was a tense showdown between the bitter rivals, with Bruno Fernandes’ spectacular free kick sending United into the lead before Arsenal equalised in the second half.

Unfortunately, despite some impressive recent displays, there is a problematic trend emerging. It appears as if the United captain is being called upon to save his team time and again when his teammates fail to produce the finished product.

Defensively, United have held solid despite several injuries. The back three of Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui, and Leny Yoro did everything required of them to keep a clean sheet against Sociedad, had an unfortunate hand ball not resulted in a penalty.

With Victor Lindelof replacing Mazraoui in the back three for the Arsenal clash as the Moroccan shifted to wing-back, Amorim’s defence was decent against Arsenal as well. It took a moment of magic from Declan Rice to level the scoreline with a shot that very few players could be expected to block.

Attacking has been a different story, however. While Joshua Zirkzee scored a spectacular goal against Sociedad last time out, Fernandes had to rescue his team against Arsenal as well as during the FA Cup defeat to Fulham, thereby sending the game to penalties.

Aside from Fernandes, who has 12 goals and 13 assists in 42 games across all competitions this season, there seems to be no other consistent performer up top.

With eight goals and seven assists in all competitions, Alejandro Garnacho has been through an exhaustive dry streak, last finding the back of the net against Bodø/Glimt on November 28.

Despite his recent goal against Sociedad, Zirkzee has struggled greatly up top, scoring just six goals this entire season.

Another painful dry streak has been that of Rasmus Hojlund. With seven goals to his name in all competitions, the Dane’s last goal came on December 12 against Viktoria Plzen, and while Garnacho’s streak is longer, Hojlund’s is even more alarming given his primary role as a striker.

If there’s one thing that United manager Amorim has to do ahead of tonight’s game, it’s to ensure that his attacking lineup has the focus and confidence it needs in order to be more clinical up top. To rely on one key player for results is not a sustainable strategy, no matter how exceptional he may be. Hopefully, finishing has been a central focus at Carrington in the days leading up to this crucial match.

As the only opportunity for silverware that United have left, tonight’s Europa League match against Sociedad means everything.

Amorim must ensure that his defence remains consistent, as they have in recent games, while his attacking lineup needs to sharpen up and contribute goals if they are to have any hope of saving the season.

Pundit Predictions: Will Heaven start?

0

Skip to Main NavigationSkip to content

Thursday 13 March 2025 12:00

After a highly impressive substitute performance at the weekend, will young defender Ayden Heaven make his first Manchester United start in Thursday’s UEFA Europa League encounter with Real Sociedad?

That’s the key question our MUTV pundits have been debating while playing our popular United Predictions game ahead of an Old Trafford night under the lights.

With a new absentee and some returning faces, Ruben Amorim is likely to make changes to his United team. Our Portuguese head coach confirmed some key team news in Wednesday’s pre-match press conference. Defender Leny Yoro is out for the next two games after a knock sustained in Sunday’s 1-1 Premier League draw with Arsenal. Midfielder Manuel Ugarte, on the other hand, could make his return.

United were held to a 1-1 draw at La Real a week ago. Joshua Zirkzee had opened the scoring with a fine strike but Mikel Oyarzabal’s 70th-minute penalty ensured it’s all to play for in M16 in the second leg.

The Reds know the Europa League is our final chance of lifting silverware this season. So, how many changes will Amorim make against a tough Real Sociedad side? Might we see a chance for one of the squad’s young players due to injuries? And will United get the job done?

Well, our pundits have given us their insights to help you in making your own predictions. So, read their thoughts and then join us to predict Ruben’s starting XI, the scoreline, first goalscorer and your Man of the Match, and you’ll have the chance to win great prizes.

Danny Webber is backing a first United start for Ayden Heaven, the 18-year-old defender brought in from Arsenal in January. Check out his full predictions below…

DANNY WEBBER’S PREDICTIONS

United XI: Onana; De Ligt, Heaven, Mazraoui; Dalot, Casemiro, Ugarte, Dorgu; Garnacho, Fernandes; Zirkzee.

Man of the Match: Bruno Fernandes

Score: United 2-1 Real Sociedad

First scorer: Alejandro Garnacho

Webber expects Heaven to slot between senior defenders Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui, and replace the injured Yoro in the starting line-up. Harry Maguire is also absent at the moment, but might return for the weekend’s trip to Leicester City.

Heaven has made two United appearances so far, both as a substitute. He first came on in our gutting FA Cup penalty shoot-out defeat to Fulham, before an excellent 45 minutes against his former club, Arsenal.

Will Ayden Heaven start v Real Sociedad?

poll

Will Ayden Heaven start v Real Sociedad?

As for the rest of Webber’s United Predictions, he thinks Ugarte will come straight back into the side after returning to training, and he’s elected Zirkzee to lead the line ahead of Rasmus Hojlund.

His choice of Man of the Match will be no surprise in Bruno Fernandes. Our captain has shown his quality on the big nights so far this season. Webber thinks Garnacho will net the first goal after a strong performance against Arsenal at the weekend, which Amorim called his “best game since I’ve been here”.

Wes Brown is also backing Bruno for a big night — who isn’t?! — but doesn’t agree with Danny on everything…

WES BROWN’S PREDICTIONS

United XI: Onana; Mazraoui, De Ligt, Lindelof; Dalot, Fernandes, Casemiro, Dorgu; Zirkzee, Hojlund, Garnacho.

Score: United 2-0 Real Sociedad

First scorer: Rasmus Hojlund

Man of the Match: Bruno Fernnades

Wes, who knew how to step it up for the big European nights, thinks Amorim will prioritise experience over youth on Thursday. He’s backing Victor Lindelof to start ahead of Ayden Heaven, and he’s elected a different midfield, too. With Ugarte having only recently returned to training, Wes thinks Bruno will slot into that deeper midfield role alongside Casemiro, with an exciting attacking trio of first-leg goalscorer Zirkzee, Garnacho and Hojlund.

Rasmus has been searching eagerly for the back of the net in recent games and made some excellent runs out in San Sebastian, and Wes predicts him to net United’s first goal in an excellent home victory. Let’s hope so!

WHAT RUBEN’S SAID

Keen for more insight before making your choices? Well, here’s the key team news lines from the boss to help you.

TeamViewer Trending: De Ligt’s Growing Influence

Thursday 13 March 2025 10:00

United’s FA Cup elimination to Fulham earlier this month was another tough moment in a difficult season. But amid the disappointment, thousands of fans were still moved to find time to praise the individual performance of Matthijs de Ligt.

The Dutchman’s effort against the Cottagers was simply immense, from a mental and physical standpoint, and continued the 25-year-old’s quiet rise since the arrival of Ruben Amorim.

Against Real Sociedad last Thursday, and Arsenal on Sunday, it was the same again: two challenging contests for the team to negotiate, during which De Ligt opened the shoulders and gave it everything. Concentration, commitment, intelligence, and plenty of combat.

While the Reds have gone through the ringer in 2025, De Ligt has shown clear relish for the challenges United have had to negotiate. And in this recent run of games – Ipswich, Fulham, La Real, Arsenal – supporters have really noticed.

De Ligt’s first United goal at Old Trafford arrived in the game against Kieran McKenna’s side – a typically full-blooded stab home from close range, following a penalty-area stramash – and throughout that 10-man win, he and Harry Maguire seemed to be in their element. Backs-to-the-wall defending, disgusting weather conditions, endless physical battles against the aggressive Liam Delap? We’ll have a bit of that, the big centre-halves seemed to say.

There’s not a lot to shout about at the moment, with injury-hit United in the midst of the club’s worst Premier League season on record. But De Ligt’s growing authority and influence deserves a modest nod…

De Ligt’s first Old Trafford goal Video

De Ligt’s first Old Trafford goal

DE LIGT REACTS FIRST | Matthijs was on hand to turn home after Alex Palmer saved from Diogo Dalot…

STANDOUT MOMENT

De Ligt made six successful tackles across the full 120 minutes against Fulham, but there were two particularly outstanding pieces of defending – the first a crunching effort to stop Antonee Robinson’s counterattack down United’s right, just by the touchline in front of the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand.

The crowd loved that one, as they did another on Andreas Pereira. The former United midfielder sent Victor Lindelof the wrong way inside the penalty area, and was lining up a certain goalscoring opportunity when De Ligt crashed in from nowhere to send the ball to safety, and the former Academy graduate rolling towards the advertising hoardings. Minutes later, Bruno Fernandes equalised.

The former Ajax captain is at his best when saving the day: remember his amazing clearance from inches in front of the goal line during that remarkable FA Cup tie at Arsenal? There’s a great image of De Ligt shaking the netting with joyous defiance, after nicking the ball away from Leandro Trossard’s feet. To adopt the old cliché, it was a piece of defending almost the equal of scoring a goal.

Another personal favourite was Matthijs’s tackle on Southampton’s Kamaldeen Sulemana at Old Trafford back in January. The game was poised at 1-1 with less than 10 minutes left, and Sulemana had already given Leny Yoro a torrid night. De Ligt slammed into the Ghanaian at the first attempt, and helped United maintain control in the Saints’ half. The final result? 3-1 United.

But perhaps his finest recent moment came against Real Sociedad, when he slipped as a low ball entered the Reds’ box. On the floor as the ball approached him, he somehow managed to adjust and launch the ball away with his ‘other’ foot, just as Orri Oskarsson seemed poised for a simple chance to put the Basque club ahead.

PERFORMANCE INSIGHT

Heroic blocks and attacking contributions earn players like De Ligt the viral clips that entertain fans, but it’s surely Matthijs’s leadership qualities and mental strength that make him so valuable in this current period of United history.

That’s no surprise – he captained Ajax at 18 and has also played for European giants Juventus and Bayern Munich – but that desire to keep competing, to keep coming back for more, when the team is not performing so fluently and the scrutiny is unflinching… well, it deserves recognition.

There’s a willingness to adapt too. The player has featured across Amorim’s back three, and has had to work within an array of defensive configurations due to the many injuries that have afflicted United in recent months. Against Fulham, he was the only central defender to play the whole of the contest, which meant he dovetailed with Harry Maguire, Leny Yoro, Victor Lindelof and Ayden Heaven across normal time and extra-time.

De Ligt’s saving challenge Video

Matthijs de Ligt prevented ex-Red Andreas going through with this crunching tackle…

MATTHIJS SAID

“I feel well settled in now. I remember my old agent, Mino Raiola, always told me that after six months you start to feel a little bit better, and after one year you can say that you are completely settled. I feel good with my team-mates, with the stadium, with the fans, so hopefully we can continue like that, and me personally also.

“I expected it [the Premier League] to be like this. Obviously, in the beginning it’s quite difficult because, first of all, you’re coming from a different league and, second of all, I didn’t have a normal pre-season in the last couple of years, because of injuries, because of the Euros last summer. So it’s quite normal in the beginning you have some trouble with adjusting to the pace of the game, the pace of the players, and I feel that, game by game, I’m getting better, I’m getting more used to the opponents, the league, and then it becomes a lot easier.”

MATCH MOMENT | The Old Trafford crowd loved this series of challenges, culminating with Matthijs de Ligt weighing in…

THE PUNDITS SAID

Two-time Champions League winner Wes Brown is a big De Ligt admirer. “Matthijs de Ligt can be an elite defender for Manchester United,” he opined recently. “He’s had some really good games and when he settles into life at the club he’ll be a big success. He’s been playing at the highest level for so many years now at such a young age and now it’s about showing everyone what he can do at Old Trafford. I think he’ll find his rhythm in Ruben Amorim’s system and be a valuable player for many years to come.”

Despite our FA Cup exit to Fulham recently, even the BBC’s Alan Shearer had time to offer a few words of recognition for the Dutchman, too. “De Ligt has done everything right. His defending is impressive, really tight, not giving anyone any space.”

DID YOU KNOW?

De Ligt and Maguire became the first centre-backs in United’s Premier League history to score in the same game, when netting against Ipswich. Opta claim that two defenders have scored in the same game for the Reds on six occasions since England’s top flight was rebranded in 1992, but the previous five occasions involved contributions from full-backs who are, of course, more often involved in attacking play.

Premier League table since Sir Jim Ratcliffe deal highlights Man Utd’s wretchedness…

Sir Jim Ratcliffe reckons Man Utd will win the title again under his ownership. The Premier League table since he arrived shows how far they have to go.

It has been a big week for Sir Jim Ratcliffe…

On Monday, he went before the cameras to face questions over his stewardship of Manchester United. Many people felt the billionaire came across poorly. Though it could have been worse.

Then, on Tuesday, Ratcliffe was the face of the presentation of Manchester United’s new home. That, a £2billion circus tent, went down as well as his interview.

Ratcliffe received some criticism for saying that some United players weren’t good enough and that some were overpaid. What else could he say? To deny either suggestion would be a bare-faced lie.

United’s current position proves it, but their Premier League woes stretch back before this season to the start of Ratcliffe’s reign.

His investment was confirmed on February 20 2024, since when United have amassed 50 points from 41 games.

That’s an average of 1.2ppg – the lowest since 1980-81. Over a 38-game season, that would see United finish on 46 points.

Only once in the last decade would that be enough for a top-half finish. In that time, 46 points would lead to an average finish of 12th.

Here’s the full Premier League table since Ratcliffe’s investment was confirmed almost 13 months ago.

Tables are fun, aren’t they?

You can build your own here, using many different criteria. Like the one above, between any two dates. Or a custom match period. Or the entire 33-year Premier League era.

The possibilities are endless. Treat yourself and have a play.

And make sure you don’t miss these…

Manchester United have added two youngsters to our Europa League squad for the home game against Real Sociedad.

The Reds have tweaked the UEFA B list ahead of the deadline for Thursday’s round-of-16 second leg at Old Trafford.

The tie, finely poised at 1-1 following the first leg, kicks off at 20:00 GMT.

James Scanlon is in contention for a place in the matchday squad.

Tyler Fredricson and James Scanlon are the two names introduced, as they will hope to make the matchday squad for what promises to be a big occasion under the lights at the Theatre of Dreams.

Centre-back Fredricson captained our Under-19s in the UEFA Youth League and was an unused substitute for the Premier League contest at Tottenham Hotspur last month.

Scanlon is a full international for Gibraltar but has yet to be involved in a senior match for the Reds. The 18-year-old wide forward has helped Adam Lawrence’s side continue our run in the FA Youth Cup this term, scoring twice in the 5-1 fifth-round win over Chelsea.

Chido Obi trained with the group at Carrington on Wednesday but cannot be added to the B list as he has not yet been at the club for a minimum of two years.

Elyh Harrison, Harry Amass, Habeeb Ogunneye, Jack Fletcher and Jayce Fitzgerald are all eligible for the competition.

Tickets are still available for all United fans to purchase as we look to progress to the quarter-finals.
