These two insanely clever Amorim decisions ensured United ran riot against Real Sociedad

Manchester United came from behind to thrash Real Sociedad 4-1 in their Europa League Round of 16 second-leg tie at Old Trafford on Thursday to secure progress to the quarterfinals thanks to a 5-2 aggregate victory.

The Red Devils will face Olympique Lyon in the last eight stage in what promises to be another blockbuster game. For now, Ruben Amorim will be delighted with his team’s response despite going down by a goal after yet another VAR howler.

Matthijs de Ligt was penalized wrongly by VAR even after the referee initially waved play on just like in the first leg. With the visitors taking control of the tie, fans would have expected the worst given the team’s fragility in recent times.

Instead, the team roared into action with Rasmus Hojlund winning a penalty six minutes later. It was a soft call but the hosts deserved some luck given their recent run-ins with VAR.

Dorgu, Zirkzee on fire

Skipper Bruno Fernandes made no mistake from the spot. The home side should have scored a couple more before half-time but for some lax finishing.

United took complete charge of the game when Jon Aramburu saw red for tackling Patrick Dorgu from behind with the Dane running clean through on goal.

And after that it was smooth sailing with the wingback winning another penalty moments later, which the club captain converted without hesitation.

The 20-year-old was not done there as he seemingly won yet another penalty before the 90 minutes were up only to tell the referee to overturn his decision. It was great sportsman spirit shown by the ex-Lecce star.

Fernandes might have been denied the chance to net a hat-trick from the spot but he made matters sure in the 87th minute with a fine strike from the edge of the box.

Diogo Dalot then got in on the act to ensure a fantastic win, arguably the best display from the 20-time English league champions under Amorim.

Zirkzee, Dorgu on the same side created havoc

Joshua Zirkzee ran the show at times while Dorgu was unstoppable. Amorim wanted a striker in January but when he was told the club did not have the funds to land one, he insisted INEOS to go after the Denmark international.

What a choice it has proven to be with his fearless style of play suiting Amorim’s 3-4-3 style to the T. Now for the club to address the opposite flank in the summer.

Zirkzee’s impact since dropping into the No 10 position has been remarkable to see and Amorim now has two undroppables. Both work great in tandem, especially when playing on the same flank.

Alejandro Garnacho has often overlooked him in favour of going on his own when playing on the same side which is why Amorim decided to play the Dutchman on the left this time around as he loves to link up play.

After two brave displays back-to-back, can Amorim get this United team to show some consistency? Only time will tell.

Amorim hails his team’s ‘exhibition’

Ruben Amorim praised the collective effort of his Manchester United team as the Reds reached the last eight of the Europa League.

A 4-1 home win over Real Sociedad sealed a 5-2 aggregate success, with Bruno Fernandes notching a hat-trick and Diogo Dalot also on the scoresheet late on.

Noussair Mazraoui, Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund were among those to impress and catch the eye of the boss, who was confident his charges would get the job done, regardless of the fact the visitors were reduced to 10 men when Jon Aramburu was sent off.

See what Ruben had to say in his interviews with the official broadcasters…

Amorim: We’re learning as a team Video

Amorim: We’re learning as a team

AMORIM’S VERDICT | Hear from Ruben, as he reflects on a morale-boosting night in Manchester…

IT WAS A GOOD WEEK

“The performance was really good. I think the response has been great, it was a good week. We show a little bit of the future. We talk about the problems of the present and give a good exhibition to our fans to complete the week. We are learning about us, about different competitions, how to win games. Sometimes how to draw games, to win some points. So, it was a tough week, but a good week.”

CONFIDENCE IN THE PLAYERS

“Sometimes, I feel in the team: we can do this. We are good players, we can be a good team, and, today, I felt that. Even, we had the sending off, but even without the sending off, you feel that the team are going to win this game.”

TEAM EFFORT

“Rasmus needs a goal, for example, but the work he put in today. Because we play with the two no.10s, we need one player to push the team to  make the runs. And he’s doing that. He is helping a lot, the team is better in connection. Today, he did some three or four connections that can allow us to change the side of the game. I think he deserved this kind of moment [the assist for Dalot] to feel that. Every striker wants to score goals and we are going to help him score. He’s so anxious, you can see it. But Josh, everybody, Nous did it. All the team played really well today.”

RESPONSE TO CRITICISM

“Yes and everybody here believes in them. We need to show everybody. Like I said before the game, we know our moment, we did a lot of things bad, bad performances, bad results and we need to continue in the next match.”

HAT-TRICK HERO BRUNO

“He’s always there and the guy that can play one game and then, suddenly, he will be ready to play in the different position. He can [do] set-pieces, he can score penalties with a high pressure. He can make transitions in the last 15 minutes of the game, with a lot of games, so it’s perfect for us. And we need to help him to win titles.”

LYON NEXT

“It’s big but I think it’s going to be a different game. Against Lyon is going to be a different game because the physicality is there. They play in the league that is so physical, like ours. Doesn’t have the same quality, but the physicality. So, it is going to be a different game. We have to find the different ways of winning the games, and we are ready for that. It’s Leicester in this moment, though, let’s just focus on that.”

Man Utd target Champions League as Amorim’s side fully morphs into Bruno Fernandes FC

If Manchester United and Bruno Fernandes can keep saving their best for Thursday nights, the 14th best team in the Premier League might somehow stumble into next season’s Champions League.

Thursday evening’s win over Real Sociedad was Man United‘s best performance under Ruben Amorim. They have had better results – like at Manchester City and Liverpool – but they have not played better than that.

Not only did they look competent for once, but there were some standout individual performances, not least from captain fantastic Bruno Fernandes.

There was not a single bad performance, actually. Ayden Heaven did very well considering it was the first start of his senior career, Diogo Dalot was decent and got a late goal to make it 4-1, Joshua Zirkzee is getting better every week and Patrick Dorgu was certainly in amongst it.

Dorgu has had an indifferent start to life after joining for £25million in January, getting sent off in only his third Premier League appearance to miss Fulham win an FA Cup tie at Old Trafford before a 1-1 draw against Arsenal.

He might turn out to be one of the most entertaining players in the Premier League because that was not only a fantastic performance from left-wing-back, but just pure, beautiful, unadulterated chaos. A very interesting performance from the referee did facilitate this.

The man in black, Benoit Bastien, is addicted to giving penalties. He lives for it. He might be on commission. Having given 12 spot-kicks in 21 fixtures this season, he was in his element here.

The Frenchman awarded a penalty in the eighth, 14th, 48th and 84th minutes in Man United’s 4-1 Europa League win over Real Sociedad – who were also reduced to ten men in the 63rd minute. Jon Aramburu brought down Dorgu 50 yards from goal as last man and Bastien had no hesitation in telling him to grab an early bath.

The first penalty was scored by Sociedad captain Mikel Oyarzabal as everyone anticipated another One Of Those Nights for Amorim’s Red Devils. They were given a penalty six minutes later for an identical foul and Fernandes scored his first of three, the last of which actually came from open play!

Dorgu – thriving in the chaos – won a questionable penalty three minutes into the second half but the foul he won in the box six minutes from time was a step too far for VAR, who finally told the referee to rein it in.

Having been denied a hat-trick of penalties on a night he set a new record for most penalties scored in the Europa League twice already, Fernandes was upset and decided to complete his hat-trick with a beautiful goal three minutes from time. Diogo Dalot even had time to make it four.

As touched on, Dorgu had an evening to remember and Zirkzee deserves so much credit for how he has bounced back and overcome some extremely testing moments in his early months at the club.

He was jeered off ten weeks ago half an hour into a loss at home to Newcastle United but instead of crawling into a hole and hiding, he has grown in confidence. Importantly, he has also grown into his role under Amorim, linking midfield to attack with some very tidy touches, through balls and hold-up play. It was his through ball that led to Aramburu’s red card.

His performance on Thursday was very good but it was all about United’s hero, saviour, captain and entire football club really: Bruno Fernandes.

He was just so f**king good. He was perfect in everything he did. His positioning off the ball, defensive contribution, the goals, leadership, playmaking… it was a joy to watch and everything Amorim wants and needs from his captain.

There were some initial concerns over Fernandes’ role in Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation and whether or not it would ever enable him to play at a world-class level but those doubts have been alleviated by some standout performances in the middle of the park next.

When Bruno plays like that, United have a chance against anyone. Yes, there are some handy sides in this season’s Europa League but there are not too many better than Sociedad. This bodes well for a team potentially on the brink of finishing in the bottom six of the Premier League and qualifying for the Champions League in the same season.

Winning the FA Cup saved the Red Devils’ season – and Erik ten Hag’s job – last year. Winning the Europa League would do more than that; it would get them into Europe’s premier competition, which as everyone knows attracts better players and brings in a very significant amount of money.

Not only that, but in a period of transition under new ownership and first-team management, it could help skip a few phases in the Jim Reaper process.

There is a long way to go and Lyon in the quarters will be difficult, but Bruno Fernandes is the best player in the competition and clearly capable of winning matches on his own. Despite solid performances from Dorgu, Zirkzee, Casemiro and others, the difference was ultimately the Portuguese and his ability to put it right in the f**king goal hole.

That end product has kept the season alive and winning the Europa League is a very real possibility. It is going to be hilarious when they lose against Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester City after Liverpool win a major trophy on Sunday, isn’t it?

Doesn’t matter, mate. Everything else is irrelevant and recording their worst-ever finish in the Premier League won’t matter when Bruno Fernandes FC are in the Champions League next season.

3 goals, 4 key passes, 100% inspiration: United’s brilliant talisman provides perfect response to Roy Keane on massive European night

Bruno Fernandes was sensational as he grabbed a hat-trick to inspire Manchester United into the last eight of the Europa League.

The 30 year old has been criticised this season by some former players such as Roy Keane but he has been sublime in the last few weeks.

The United captain has been simply stunning of late and has now scored six goals in his last six games.

The Portuguese was once again all over the pitch as he put in an attacking and defensive masterclass.

United got off to the worst possible start when a penalty was given against them but they responded immediately when Fernandes tucked away his first spot kick of the night with minimal fuss.

The Portugal international stuck away a crucial second penalty on the night when the Red Devils were awarded a second foul in the box after Patrick Dorgu was taken down.

The Portuguese magician rounded off a perfect evening when he broke free and was released by the bubbly Garnacho. Fernandes made no mistake with a clinical finish into the bottom corner.

Such was the impressive nature of Bruno’s night that he was given a rare score of 10 from Sofascore for his night’s work.

To go along with his goals, he had 87 touches and completed 80% of his passes.

Four of these were classified as key passes as he once again ran the show for his side.

He had four shots on target, one blocked effort and one that missed the goal as he put Alex Remiro, the Real Sociedad keeper, under pressure all night.

What makes Fernandes such a special player is for all his flair, he is also a grafter and he won five out of his seven ground duels.

He also won 100% of his aerial battles in an imperious display.

The United captain left the pitch to a raucous reception from the adoring Old Trafford crowd as the Red Devils soaked in another outstanding European night under the floodlights.

Manchester United will face Lyon in the quarter-finals of this season’s Europa League.

The Reds beat Real Sociedad 4-1 (5-2 on aggregate) in Thursday’s round-of-16 second leg and had captain Bruno Fernandes to thank for a hat-trick at Old Trafford.

Diogo Dalot also scored in a thrilling tie, after Ruben Amorim’s side had fallen behind to Mikel Oyarzabal’s 10th-minute spot-kick.

We’ll play Lyon – who thrashed FCSB in their last-16 tie – in France first, on Thursday 10 April, with the return in M16 seven days later. Kick-off times will be confirmed in due course.

Lyon won 4-0 on the night against the Romanians to seal a resounding 7-1 triumph over the two legs.

Former Reds midfielder Nemanja Matic plays for the French club, who are currently sixth in the Ligue 1 table.

In the earlier games, Athletic Club, Bodo/Glimt, Eintracht Frankfurt and Lazio booked their spots in the last eight, while Tottenham Hotspur have also progressed.

Rangers and Fenerbahce went to a penalty shootout, after the Turks turned a two-goal deficit around in Glasgow. Ex-United men were heavily involved as Jack Butland made a brilliant save to deny Fred and Tom Lawrence converted the next effort. Mert Hakan Yandas skied the final shot as the Gers progressed to the last eight.

Three things we learned as United storm into Europa quarter-finals with dominant 4-1 win over Sociedad

Manchester United beat Real Sociedad 4-1 in the return leg of their Europa League round of 16 tie, to cruise to the quarter-finals of the competition.

Ruben Amorim started Andre Onana in goal with a three-man defence of Noussair Mazraoui, Matthijs de Ligt and Ayden Heaven ahead of him. Diogo Dalot and Patrick Dorgu were deployed in the wing-back roles.

Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro started as United’s deepest-lying midfielders, with Alejandro Garnacho and Joshua Zirkzee as the two number 10s. Rasmus Hojlund was tasked with leading the line.

Here are three things we learned from United’s dominant victory.

United have a serious player in Heaven

After news broke that Leny Yoro and Harry Maguire would be unavailable for the return leg with Sociedad, all indications pointed to Heaven getting his first start for the club and indeed, that came to pass.

He lined up alongside experienced professionals like Mazraoui and De Ligt and didn’t look out of place. He barely put a foot wrong throughout the 90 minutes.

The teenager was a bit shaky at the start but he quickly brushed off any nerves and grew into the game, effectively becoming dominant.

He was solid defensively and played a massive role in keeping the dangerous Take Kubo quiet. Heaven was brilliant in his duels, mostly coming out on top.

Another thing that stuck out from his game was just how comfortable he was in possession. He was calm and composed under pressure, sometimes taking huge risks when playing out from the back. Last weekend, Amorim insisted that Heaven is “too relaxed” and today was further evidence of this.

The former Arsenal youngster also looked to step out from the back and into slightly more advanced positions – a tactic that helped United push up a bit higher.

United have a top talent in Heaven and he certainly appears ready for first-team football. Consider that he cost the club only £1m and the Red Devils seem to have struck gold with him. The sky is the limit for Heaven!

A lot better from the forward players

United’s attacking players have shouldered most of the criticism directed at the team this season—and deservedly so, given their poor performances.

However, against Sociedad, they were a lot better than they’ve been for large parts of the campaign.

Hojlund, who went into the game on a 20-game goal drought, won the penalty from which United restored parity. He also held up the ball well, bringing others into play. The Dane could have got on the score sheet when he connected with a brilliant ball from Zirkzee but he narrowly missed the target.  The highlight of his game was the assist for Dalot’s late strike. Additionally, he made a number of good runs.

Hojlund executed the simple things brilliantly and for a struggling striker who is short of confidence, that’s the least you can expect.

Zirkzee put in a man-of-the-match-worthy performance in the middle of the park. He used his body well and was physical. The 23-year-old produced some fine footwork and silky bits of play that left the Old Trafford crowd on their feet.

The Dutchman came close to scoring in the second half but just lacked the finishing touch.

Garnacho was also good, running riot down the right and causing the Sociedad defenders all sorts of problems.

Hopefully, tonight’s attacking performance from the forwards sets the tone for the rest of the season, as United push for Europa League glory and aim to rise in the Premier League standings.

Amorim’s philosophy slowly starting to take shape

United’s performance in the return leg against Sociedad was arguably their most complete one since Amorim’s arrival in November last year.

The Portuguese coach has at times come under criticism for failing to adjust his playing style to suit the stars currently at his disposal but has consistently stuck to his guns and now, it seems like it’s paying dividends.

Alongside the attackers’ improved display, the defenders were rock solid, completely shutting out Sociedad. The wing-backs were outstanding as well—Dorgu was relentless down the left, winning a penalty, drawing several fouls, and delivering multiple dangerous crosses into the box.

Dalot, in addition to getting on the scoresheet, was superb, pushing forward frequently and linking up well with Garnacho.

United delivered a strong performance across both halves, showing promising signs that Amorim’s philosophy is beginning to take shape.

United 4 Real Sociedad 1 (5-2 agg)

Thursday 13 March 2025 22:00

Manchester United surged into the Europa League quarter-finals with a resounding 4-1 (5-2 aggregate) victory over Real Sociedad at Old Trafford.

Just 10 minutes had passed when Mikel Oyarzabal won the visitors a penalty, which he converted. It looked like the worst of starts for United, but it would merely set the tone for a thrill-a-minute game of football.

Five minutes later, Bruno Fernandes levelled the game with a spot-kick of his own before, on the other side of half-time, repeating the trick to give the Reds the lead both in the game and in the tie.

But he wasn’t satisified with just that, sealing his hat-trick in the final few minutes, before his fellow countryman Diogo Dalot put the cherry on the cake in stoppage-time. It was a night to remember in Manchester.

Alejandro Garnacho never let the Real Sociedad defence rest.

FIRST HALF – FRANTIC BEGINNINGS

Head coach Ruben Amorim insisted pre-match that there’s nothing behind the Reds’ decision to shoot towards the Stretford End first in recent games, but his men opted to do so – somewhat against tradition – for the fourth home outing in a row.

The jury’s out on whether it proved a lucky charm for United after a chaotic first 15 minutes.

It looked a routine challenge on first viewing when Matthijs de Ligt prevented Oyarzabal from latching onto a Aritz Elustondo cross, but VAR paused proceedings and recommended a closer look. Referee Benoit Bastien made his way to the monitor and, perhaps a little harshly, awarded a spot-kick, converted by Oyarzabal by sending Andre Onana the wrong way.

If the Reds felt hard done by that decision, we would only need to wait a few moments for compensation.

Downed by the early goal, Old Trafford roared into life and their representatives on the pitch responded. Casemiro flicked a clever ball over the top of the visitors’ backline for Fernandes to chase, who switched it, unselfishly and intelligently, across to Rasmus Hojlund.

The Dane looked a sure bet to score before Igor Zubeldia did the only thing he could do: foul Hojlund before he scored. No monitors required for this challenge; United had a penalty of our own and with his signature, devastating style, Fernandes passed the ball home, as though pressure’s a myth.

There was no shortage of spark following that action-packed five-minute spell and, save for a couple of opportunities, it was all going the Reds’ way.

Electric runs past defenders, tricky feet from Joshua Zirkzee, determined pressing from Alejandro Garnacho, a well-caught volley from Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu and strong defending from Ayden Heaven on his full debut. The first half had it all – all but a second goal to take United ahead.

Amorim’s men were forced to try and bottle their opening 45-minutes energy and carry it through the interval. If they could, a breakthrough would surely follow.

Bruno Fernandes didn’t let the visitors’ lead stand for long.

SECOND HALF – DOMINANT HOSTS

Three minutes is all it took to confirm the Reds had taken that fighting spirit through the break and into the second period.

Dalot had already fired a good cross in and, with the opposition still scrambling from a lightning-quick start, Dorgu picked up the ball and flicked it out of Aritz Elustondo’s path, but the full-back was already committed and brought his opposite number down. Our captain had another chance from the spot.

There was no hint of panic from Bruno. Same old routine: step up, score, celebrate. It had been on a slightly delayed fuse, but United’s immense first-half pressure had paid off; we had a lead to defend.

There was no sitting back from Amorim’s men, though, as we chased more goals.

Diogo Dalot celebrates his goal.

Dorgu – having won our second penalty of the game – remained a thorn in the side of the opposition, and he hadn’t inflicted the last of his damage. Zirkzee managed to thread a ball through a packed midfield to the Dane on the opposite wing and, scared the our no.13 was about to accelerate towards goal, Jon Aramburu clumsily brought him to ground. As the last man, the decision was clear, La Real were down to 10 men.

It was a commanding performance all over the pitch by United. Zirkzee, in particular, shone despite not etching his name on the scoresheet. On numerous occasions, he started moves, created chances, held the ball up, almost notched a couple of times towards the end of the game and was deservedly serenaded off the pitch when replaced by Christian Eriksen.

Incredibly, we almost had a third penalty when Dorgu was once again brought down in the penalty area, before it was chalked off by VAR with the wing-back himself appearing to tell the referee it was not a foul.

It mattered not, however. Minutes later, Garnacho set off down the pitch and fed a tireless Fernandes in, who dispatched his shot neatly into the bottom left corner and celebrated his second hat-trick for the club after his treble against Leeds United in 2021.

Still we didn’t stop. This time, Hojlund twisted and turned inside the box to square a ball to Dalot, who smashed our final goal of the evening into the roof of the net. There were no doubts who had controlled this evening at Old Trafford.

A captain’s hat-trick on a scintillating night of football; the Reds were heading into the next round of the Europa League in style.

A special performance by Joshua Zirkzee.

Amorim’s United pour heart and soul into huge 4-1 victory over Real Sociedad to breathe life into season

Manchester United smashed Real Sociedad 4-1 to progress to the quarter finals of the Europa League after an outstanding performance from Ruben Amorim’s men.

Real Sociedad started the better of the two teams as United looked rather nervous in possession and made a couple of questionable passes that thankfully led to nothing.

In the opening minutes, Ayden Heaven made a confident start on his first ever senior start, cutting the ball out well and playing a couple of nice passes.

Disaster struck for the home side when Real Sociedad got in behind and a ball was played across goal and Matthijs de Ligt took down Mikel Oyarzabal. After a prolonged VAR check, a penalty was given which stunned the home fans.

The Old Trafford crowd was far from impressed as they felt for the second time in the tie that the Basques got the rub of the green on a penalty decision.

After ten minutes Oyarzabal made no mistake as he calmly slotted home and sent Andre Onana the wrong way.

United responded and just two minutes later, the ball was worked to Alejandro Garnacho on the right hand side who cut infield and unleashed a powerful shot that was right at the Sociedad keeper.

One minute later, Casemiro played a great ball to Bruno Fernandes who fired the ball across the area and Rasmus Hojlund was brought down by the Basque defender. Penalty United.

The United captain stood up and slotted home the penalty as he always seems to do to give the home side the perfect reaction.

The Red Devils kept up the pressure and Fernandes crossed in a delicious ball for Hojlund who missed it and the keeper punched clear. The ball finally broke to Casemiro who flashed a shot from outside the box wide.

After 23 minutes Patrick Dorgu was released down the left hand side by Joshua Zirkzee and he lofted in a ball that found Garnacho, who finally got a shot off that was blocked for a corner.

Moments later, United switched off for a short corner and Takefusa Kubo unleashed an effort but it was well caught by Onana to keep the scores level.

On the half hour mark, fantastic work down the left by Zirkzee resulted in a ball across goal that Hojlund hit first time, but the ball just skipped agonisingly wide of the far post to the dismay of the Stretford End.

United kept up the intensity and on 40 minutes Garnacho got in behind, but his cross was turned away for another corner.

Fernandes spread the ball out wide for Dorgu who volleyed onto the roof of the net as the home side pushed for their second goal of the evening in front of the Stretford End.

The Red Devils won a free kick on 42 minutes. Fernandes spotted the keeper off his line but got his effort spectacularly wrong as he fired well over and spurned a good opportunity to apply pressure to the Real Sociedad defence.

United broke again when Fernandes poked the ball through to the marauding Dorgu, who ran with pace at the Spanish defence but he fired a tame effort right down the throat of the visitors’ keeper.

Ruben Amorim’s side continued to push and two great balls by Casemiro were mis-controlled at exactly the wrong time by first Fernandes and then Zirkzee.

As the added time in the first half reached the fourth minute, Sociedad won a corner and the ball broke to Pablo Marín whose fierce strike was kept down well but fortunately Onana was equal to it.

The half-time whistle blew with both teams none the wiser as to who would be progressing to the quarter-final stage.

The Red Devils started the second half brightly and great play between Fernandes, Hojlund and Zirkzee resulted in a shot from the Dutchman that was well saved by the Sociedad keeper. The ball broke to Dorgu, who turned away from the oncoming defender and drew the foul. A penalty was given.

Fernandes stepped up after a delay and once again sent Alex Remiro the wrong way to give United their first lead of the match.

United really had their tails up and a brilliant ball down the left by Heaven was well won by Dorgu, who ran toward the Sociedad box but his cross was well cut out by the Spanish keeper.

Amorim’s side continued to look energetic and Garnacho intercepted a sideways pass by Remiro but could bot square the ball to an unmarked Hojlund in the box.

United got exactly what they would have wanted when more great work resulted in Zirkzee playing a beautiful ball through to Dorgu who was about to break through one-on-one with the Remiro but he was hauled down by Jon Aramburu. The referee had no choice to show the red card and United had 30 minutes of normal time left with a man advantage.

On 69 minutes, United pushed forward and the ball was worked into the box and fell to Hojlund, but the goal-shy striker hesitated and dragged his shot wide of the goal.

The game passed by quite calmly from a United perspective as they showed good game management to keep the 10 men Basques away from their goal. Fernandes won the ball and unleashed a fierce shot, looking for his hat-trick, but it was well held by Remiro.

On 81 minutes Zirkzee produced a moment of magic on the left hand side as he spun away from the Spanish defence and after good link up play once more with Fernandes, he fired a shot at goal that was pushed away by the Sociedad keeper. Mazraoui retrieved the ball and showed off his own skill, nutmegging the defender before picking out the Dutchman at the back post, but he could only head wide.

On 84 minutes, United were incredibly awarded their third penalty, the fourth of the match and fifth of the tie when the energetic Dorgu was fouled in the box for a second time. However, after a check it was chalked off, with Dorgu appearing to tell the referee it was not a penalty.

United finally killed off the tie shortly after on a lightning quick break when the lively Garnacho broke at the Spanish defence and played a beautiful ball to Fernandes who did the rest and slotted away his third goal of the night. It was his first European hat-trick for United.

The home side got a well-deserved fourth when Rasmus Hojlund’s great work all night was rewarded with an assist. He picked out an unmarked Diogo Dalot who fired into the roof of the net. 4-1 United and Old Trafford was rocking.

The match came to an end and United fans went home happy, safe in the knowledge they have secured European quarter-final action once again against Olympique Lyonnais.

Starting XI: Onana, Heaven, Mazaraoui, De Ligt, Dalot, Dorgu, Fernandes, Casemiro, Zirkzee, Garnacho, Hojlund

Alex is a huge Manchester United fan, inspired by greats of his homeland such as George Best, Harry Gregg and Norman Whiteside. Proud owner of such niche shirts such as Kleberson, Eric Djemba-Djemba and Gary Neville. Grew up pretending to be Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the back garden, with little success.

Fernandes the hat-trick hero but this outstanding star ran the show for United in win vs. Sociedad

Manchester United beat Real Sociedad 4-1 in the return leg of their Europa League round of 16 clash, to advance to the quarter-finals of the competition. Here are our player ratings from the game.

(A score of 6 is around average)

Andre Onana 6 – Much better from him. Kept it simple and did not make any mistakes or radiate panic at the back.

Noussair Mazraoui 6 – Calm and assured performance on the right of the three-man defence. Seems to be his best position.

Matthijs de Ligt 6 – Another accomplished display at the back. Picture of consistency at the moment. Conceded an early penalty but it appeared to be a harsh decision.

Ayden Heaven 7.5 – Excellent on his first start for United. Never looked out of place alongside seasoned professionals and didn’t put a foot wrong. Solid defensively and key in keeping Kubo quiet. Also brilliant when playing out from the back. United have a serious player in young Heaven.

Diogo Dalot 8 – Scored a late goal to secure the victory. Improved performance in the wing-back role. Got forward a lot more than he usually does and combined well with Garnacho. Cut out the silly mistakes from his game.

Casemiro 7 – Amazing, as evidenced by the standing ovation the fans afforded him when he came off. Strong and gritty in midfield. Kickstarted the move for United’s first penalty with a sumptuous pass. The Brazilian rolled back the years tonight.

Bruno Fernandes 9 – Hat-trick hero! Scored twice from the penalty spot and produced a stunning finish to send United through to the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

Patrick Dorgu 8 – Breathtaking. Constantly provided the overlap and sent in several crosses into the box. Worked his socks off and won a penalty for United. He could have won a second penalty but he demonstrated good sportsmanship, telling the referee it wasn’t a foul inside the box. Also won multiple fouls.

Alejandro Garnacho 6  – Worked hard down the right and looked to find his teammates with cut-backs. Very involved in attacking play and had a few shots at goal during the opening 45 minutes.

Joshua Zirkzee 8.5 – Scintillating. Some silky footwork and ran the show for United. There was a moment in the first half when he beat two or three defenders with some fantastic skills before he squared the ball into the path of Hojlund, who narrowly missed the target. Could have got on the score sheet himself in the second half but just lacked the finishing touch. Still outstanding despite not finding the back of the net. He’s really growing in a United shirt.

Rasmus Hojlund 6 – Much better than he has been over the past few weeks. Won the penalty from which United restored parity and nearly scored but sent his effort just wide. Registered an assist for Dalot’s late strike, to make it 4-1.

Substitutes

Toby Collyer 6 – Decent when he came on. Passing was good and he helped the hosts get over the line.

Christian Eriksen 5 – On the pitch for a short time but he fired a shot late on that was gathered by Alex Remiro.

Confirmed United XI vs Real Sociedad: Heaven, Dorgu, Hojlund start in crucial cup tie

Ruben Amorim has fielded an attacking line-up for tonight’s crucial Europa League Round of 16 second leg against Real Sociedad.

It’s a must-win game for United if they are to retain any hope of a trophy, qualifying for Europe and keeping their season alive.

The head coach has made some surprising choices.

Andre Onana is in goal.

The back three are Noussair Mazraoui, Ayden Heaven and Matthijs de Ligt.

Heaven’s selection ahead of veteran Victor Lindelof is a brave one by Amorim, but the youngster impressed against Arsenal when replacing Leny Yoro.

Diogo Dalot and Patrick Dorgu are the wing backs.

Casemiro returns in central midfield alongside Bruno Fernandes. Manuel Ugarte is fit but must settle for a place on the bench.

Up front, Joshua Zirkzee, Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund are tasked with breaking down the Basque defence.

The substitutes are: Elyh Harrison, Ben Mee, Harry Amass, Tyler Fredricson, Lindelof, Toby Collyer, Christian Eriksen, Jack Fletcher, Ugarte and James Scanlon.

Altay Bayindir, Tom Heaton, Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, Leny Yoro, Lisandro Martinez, Jonny Evans, Kobbie Mainoo and Amad are all injured.

Mason Mount is back in training but not match fit.

Chido Obi is ineligible having not been registered for the competition by United.

Kick-off at Old Trafford is at 8pm.
