Chelsea beat Man Utd to Quenda for two reasons as Romano reveals ‘crucial point’

Fabrizio Romano has revealed the “crucial point” among two reasons why Chelsea have beaten Manchester United to the signing of Sporting’s Geovany Quenda.

Ruben Amorim handed Quenda his debut at Sporting and the teenager became a key part of his side before Amorim left for United in November, playing as a right wing-back in the Portuguese head coach’s 3-4-3 system.

It was suggested that it was just a matter of time before Quenda joined Amorim at Old Trafford, with a report in January claiming the Red Devils had already ‘snapped up’ the 17-year-old ahead of a summer move.

David Ornstein of The Athletic played down those rumours by insisting no ‘formal offer’ had been made by United, but in February it was claimed that Quenda had ‘verbally agreed’ to reunite with Amorim.

Everything was pointing towards a move to Manchester United, but Romano revealed the bombshell news that they had been gazumped by Chelsea in the early hours of Friday morning.

He wrote on X: ‘BREAKING: Chelsea agree deal for Portuguese top talent Geovany Quenda, here we go! Medical DONE for Quenda after secret blitz, he will join Chelsea in 2026.

‘Club to club agreement completed with Sporting and Quenda said yes to Chelsea project & Enzo Maresca’s plans.’

The Athletic’s David Ornstein later revealed that United only intended to offer around €40m, while Chelsea have agreed to pay a fee between €45m and €50m, but according to Romano the date of Quenda’s move to Chelsea was also key to the decision.

“There is a crucial point,” said Romano on his YouTube channel. “Geovany Quenda will join Chelsea in the summer of 2026, so not now (upcoming summer), but letting the player stay at Sporting for one more season.

“This is a crucial topic in the conversations club to club, because Man Utd wanted Quenda to join the club immediately.

“He was considered an important part of the conversation for Ruben Amorim in this (upcoming) summer window.

“Chelsea have Willian Estevao and Kendry Paez coming to the club. Of course these are different players with different skills, but still offensive players.

“Chelsea already have many players in those positions, and so they are willing to accept Sporting’s condition – let [Sporting] have the player for one more season in order to anticipate other clubs and sign Geovany Quenda.”

It’s claimed a seven-year deal until 2033 has been agreed with the option of a further year.

United and Amorim’s idea was to deploy the left-footer at right wing-back, on the opposite side to January signing Patrick Dorgu, but Enzo Maresca (if he’s not replaced by Carlo Ancelotti or someone else by then) will look to play Quenda in a more advanced role on the wing.

Man Utd: Kobbie Mainoo exit plan revealed after Ratcliffe ‘declares war’ with new contract policy

Manchester United have seemingly conceded that Kobbie Mainoo will leave the club this summer after Sir Jim Ratcliffe ‘declared war’ with his new contract policy, but they have a stipulation for his transfer.

Ratcliffe revealed the dire straits the club is in while talking to Gary Neville and others this week in a series of interviews, claiming the club would be “bust by Christmas” without the cost-cutting strategies he’s overseen since taking charge just over a year ago.

But laying off members of staff at Carrington and failing to feed those that remain isn’t going to make any real difference, with most of the money leaking out of the club being spent on the players’ wages.

Ratcliffe has therefore ‘vowed to slash players’ pay’ according to a report on Thursday.

‘Salaries for new signings and stars attempting to renegotiate their deals will be massively scaled back’, with ‘huge bonuses offered instead when results improve’.

A United source said: “The club is moving towards performance-based contracts. This has been discussed with agents going forward.

“We will still pay competitively but we do need to manage our wage bill and ensure we are getting value for money.”

The change will see lower base pay offered to new players, but will also hit current players negotiating new deals, like Mainoo.

Talks over the academy graduate’s wage demands have stalled – he currently earns just £20,000 per week and wants £150,000 – but the report claims Ratcliffe is ‘refusing to budge’ in a bid to ‘change the culture’ at United.

It’s a decision that’s likely to see Mainoo leave the club after a report last week claimed he was ‘minded to reject the offer of a new contract at Manchester United and seek a move abroad’ in any case.

And that is a condition United are keen to place on his sale, according to Football Insider.

Chelsea were heavily linked with the England international in the summer but the report claims that while ‘United will open the door to a summer sale if they cannot find a contract agreement with Mainoo’ they ‘would prefer to sell him abroad’.

Red Devils legend Wayne Rooney is unlikely to be pleased with Ratcliffe’s policy change that’s set to force Mainoo out given he is one of just two players he believes his former club should be holding onto.

Rooney said: “[On whether there is a way back for this Manchester United team] No, I don’t think so. They look lost. They look scared. Bruno [Fernandes] is the one who keeps producing, he annoys you at times but keeps producing. They need massive changes to the squad, I think 10-15 players need to leave the club. Obviously, they can’t do that, but there is a mentality there where no one is taking responsibility [in the squad].

“[On the players to keep] I’d keep Bruno and [Kobbie] Mainoo. There is a culture at the club where it’s too easy to lose games and the players come out and say, ‘Onto the next one,’ and all that rubbish. Just show some character and fight on the pitch. It’s bad watching, it hurts. Being from Liverpool but spending so many years at United, I want the team to do well, I’ve got my kids in the academy, and it hurts watching them.”

Man Utd transfers: Amorim fights for Premier League wonderkid as ‘long list of clubs’ join race

Manchester United will be hoping to win the race to sign one of the Premier League’s top young stars this summer.

Ruben Amorim is expected to strengthen significantly this summer as multiple players are set to leave and he will finally get the chance to bring in players who wants to work with.

While their season looks set to be one of their worst for decades, they hold an outside chance of winning the Europa League after overcoming La Liga side Real Sociedad to reach the quarter-finals.

They have already suffered a transfer blow before the end of the season as former Amorim player Geovany Quenda is set to join Chelsea despite United’s concrete interest in the 17-year-old.

Given that news, they will be hoping that they can secure Southampton’s Tyler Dibling who they have been heavily linked with. CaughtOffside has reported that they are among a “long list of clubs” interested this summer.

The 19-year-old academy graduate shone in the early part of the season under Russell Martin, netting four goals in all competitions despite this being his first exposure to the Premier League.

Despite the fact they have registered their interest early, United face stiff competition from the likes of Chelsea, Newcastle, Aston Villa, RB Leipzig, Tottenham and West Ham and he is likely to be allowed to leave for around €40million.

Although, those clubs are more attractive prospects at the current time than United where there is a great deal of uncertainty attached and they could find it difficult to attract players this summer. However, Dibling would be an easier deal to complete given Southampton are set to be relegated.

Amorim’s transfer hints

The United boss has hinted from time to time in his many interviews that he is hoping to bring in players to flourish in his system for next season – and his focus on Martin Zubimendi in his pre-match interview before their Europa League victory indicated that he was a fan of the £51million star.

Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Mason Mount are all said to be not part of his plans while negative reports continue to surface about the future of academy star Kobbie Mainoo.

There’s also the interest in Barcelona’s Frenkie De Jong which has resurfaced following their transfer pursuit a few summers ago but he looks unlikely to leave for United unless there is a complete breakdown of their contract talks.

Nevertheless, it will be a summer of change and the focus will be on turfing out players Amorim has no use for and replenishing their tired squad with energy and an ability to play in his 3-4-3 system.

“Unfinished business”: Skinner confirms he would love to sign new deal, describes club as “best in the world”

Manchester United Women’s boss Marc Skinner has claimed that he wants to stay at the club for the foreseeable future.

The former Birmingham City Women coach joined United in 2021. The Red Devils have undoubtedly made great progress under the Englishman as they won their first piece of silverware last season when they lifted the FA Cup at Wembley.

They also find themselves second in the league after a stellar campaign so far and they are also in the semi-final stage of the cup, looking to return to Wembley for the third time in a row.

The women have a crucial fixture tonight when they travel to Anfield to take on Liverpool in league.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, carried by the BBC, the manager claimed that he wanted to stay at the club for a long time.

Skinner’s contract at United expires at the end of the season but they have until the end of March to trigger a one-year extension. They could also negotiate a new deal once that deadline passes.

Commenting on the issue he stated, “I’d love to stay. I feel there is unfinished business.”

“We’ve designed and built this young team and I feel like it has the imprint, the DNA, of a really famous United team in the making.”

The 41 year old also asserted that he has the energy to see the job through and take United to new levels they have not reached before.

“From last year my energy has changed in a completely positive direction. It’s all about driving this club forwards.”

“I want to stay and make sure we reach the successes I think this club can do. I love being at this club and I think it’s a magnificent club, the best in the world.”

Ahead of the crunch tie versus Liverpool he also provided some team news by stating that Jayde Riviere, Elisabeth Terland and Lisa Naalsund are all in contention to play after recovering from injury but Simi Awujo is still out of contention with an ankle problem.

He also talked up the prospect of playing at Anfield instead of Liverpool Women’s usual ground of the Totally Wicked Stadium.

“We’ve got to battle the spirit of the game. We’ve got to be on top form. It’s a great challenge for us,” he said.

89% pass accuracy, four dribbles completed: United loanee helps side into quarter-finals of Europe

Jadon Sancho was given a start in Chelsea’s 1-0 win over FC Copenhagen in the Conference League.

The United winger has struggled for form lately and there have even been rumours that Chelsea may look to get out of their agreement to buy the English winger in the summer.

The 24 year old has not scored or assisted a goal for the Blues since the 4th of January against Crystal Palace.

Nonetheless, he did put in an improved showing at the weekend as Chelsea beat Leicester City 1-0 in the Premier League.

He was given a rating of 6.7 by Sofascore for his evening’s work last night as Chelsea made it into the quarter-finals of the Conference League.

Sancho played 65 minutes before being subbed off and had one shot on target in the match.

He had 33 touches of the ball and completed 89% of his passes as he kept it ticking over well.

The England international was also not frightened to take on the Danish defence as he completed four out of his seven dribble attempts.

He helped out defensively too as he won four out of a contested nine ground duels.

His only other defensive action was a clearance as he helped his side keep a vital clean sheet.

Sancho was replaced by Christopher Nkunku for the final 25 minutes of action as his side saw out the crucial victory.

They will now face Legia Warszawa in the quarter-finals stage of the competition.

Sancho will be hoping that his night’s work will be enough to earn another start when the Blues travel to Arsenal in a crunch battle for the Champions League spots this Sunday afternoon.

Chelsea land huge Man Utd blow as Romano reveals ‘secret blitz’ to hijack £50m Amorim favourite

Chelsea have hijacked Manchester United’s move for Sporting star Geovany Quenda as Fabrizio Romano gives the ‘here we go’ after a ‘secret blitz’.

Everything was pointing towards a move to Manchester United, but they’ve been gazumped by Chelsea in the dead of night.

Posting at 4am, because the guy never sleeps, shortly after both Manchester United and Chelsea secured safe passage through to the quarter-final of their respective European competitions, Romano delivered the bombshell news that Chelsea have ‘agreed a deal’ with Sporting for the transfer of Quenda in 2026 after a ‘secret blitz’.

He wrote on X: ‘BREAKING: Chelsea agree deal for Portuguese top talent Geovany Quenda, here we go! Medical DONE for Quenda after secret blitz, he will join Chelsea in 2026.

The price for Quenda – who has two goals and eight assists in 43 appearances for Sporting – hasn’t been revealed, though it was previously thought the Portuguese club were looking for around £50m for the 17-year-old.

The news will come as a significant blow for United and Amorim, with Quenda proving himself perfect for Amorim’s system in their short time together at Sporting, while his ability to play on either wing was thought to be a major reason for the Red Devils’ interest.

Where exactly he will fit into Maresca’s plans isn’t clear, though he has operated more frequently on the wing rather than at wing-back under new sporting boss Rui Borges.

But Quenda is another example of Chelsea doing deals with clubs that will see there young stars remain for a season before making the switch to Stamford Bridge.

Brazilian sensation Estevao is set to join from Palmeiras at the end of the season despite Chelsea completing his £29m transfer last summer, while a £17m deal for Kendra Paez was agreed in the summer of 2023 ahead of a move to Chelsea this summer.

1 goal, 1 assist, 4 ground duels: United loanee sparkles on European stage once again

Manchester United winger Antony put in yet another stunning performance as Real Betis eased into the quarter-finals of the Conference League last night.

Betis came out on top 4-0 away from home as they travelled to Portugal to take on Vitória S.C. in the second leg of their tie.

The Brazilian has been in outstanding form for the Andalusians and their CEO has already stated that the club would love to keep him another year in Sevilla.

The 25 year old was given a rating of 8.3 on Sofascore after another sensational performance.

He played the entire 90 minutes and he scored his side’s third goal of the game after 58 minutes.

The winger ran at a tiring Portuguese defence on the counter-attack and fired a low drive into the bottom left hand corner, to give the keeper no chance at all.

On 80 minutes he was once again giving the opposition fullback nightmares as he took on the defender, beat him for pace and cut the ball back for Isco who slotted the ball into an unguarded net for the Spanish side’s fourth of the night.

He had 40 touches of the ball and completed 70% of his passes.

Antony had one key pass in the match but failed to connect with either of his two crossing attempts.

The Brazilian was also successful in one of his three dribble attempts.

The United man also contributed defensively as he often does, winning four out of his seven ground duels in the encounter.

The Brazil international made two clearances and three interceptions in an action-packed night.

Antony will next be in action for Betis when they travel to Leganes on Sunday afternoon.

Big Weekend: Liverpool v Newcastle, Arsenal, Bruno Fernandes, Frank, Steel City Derby, Atleti v Barca

This weekend’s chunky offering features the last significant game of Liverpool’s season and one that Arsenal would very much like to be the last significant game of their league season.

Game to watch: Liverpool v Newcastle
The first silverware of the English season is dished out on Sunday, and for much of the build-up it’s felt like Newcastle’s latest attempt to end a trophy drought that is so shockingly long it feels cruel to even mock it a tiny bit has been cursed, with injuries and suspensions taking a heavy toll.

But midweek could not have gone better for the Magpies. While they sat with their trotters up, they got the absolute dream scenario at Anfield: Liverpool put through 120 minutes of physical effort and stress, before the emotional damage of going out on penalties.

It’s not enough on its own to suddenly make Newcastle favourites, but there’s no doubt the feel around this game has shifted after this week’s events. It was always a game and competition that was going to mean more to those trophy-starved Newcastle fans than Liverpool supporters who have seen their team win this specific pot twice in the last three years and, spoiler alert, are going to win a bigger one later this season.

But the inevitability of that title win and Tuesday’s disappointment make this a curious game for Liverpool now. The season is, obviously, going to end up an enormously successful one on the back of what was back in August wildly unexpected Premier League glory. In the moment, though, Sunday’s Carabao final now looms incongruously as the last game of Liverpool’s season that actually matters. And it’s only mid-March.

After that it’s an international break and a box-ticking exercise until the Premier League title is mathematically confirmed. It is the absolute definition of Nice Problem To Have, but it’s still a curious way to end the season. Such utter crushing dominance of the league just sits oddly alongside going out of the truly season-long cups so early.

It does perhaps help refocus minds on this game, though, after that midweek heartbreak. You’ve got a couple of months to wallow in the past, but for one last time this season Liverpool are required in the present.

Team to watch: Arsenal
While Liverpool have no more meaningful league football to play and might weirdly miss it, Arsenal will be keen to take this weekend’s opportunity to make sure they don’t accidentally find themselves playing some important games in the run-in.

Arsenal would love to be able to focus fully on winning the Champions League but they do need to just take a tiny bit of care to ensure they’re in it again next season. They should, obviously, be fine. But they can’t really afford to spend too long mourning the latest demise of their title fight, something that seems to die anew every weekend now.

It is now all but mathematically certain that fifth place will be enough to qualify for next season’s Champions League, but there are still a large bunch of clubs in the hunt for those places and Arsenal would dearly love to keep that squabbling bunch arguing over third, fourth and fifth thank you very much.

Victory over Chelsea this weekend would be a large step towards locking down second place, but defeat would delay that prospect beyond the interlull.

Lose to Chelsea on Sunday afternoon and Arsenal will suddenly find themselves disconcertingly and frankly inexplicably only three points clear of Enzo Maresca’s daft lads, while potentially also only one point above Nottingham Forest and even a familiar feeling of dread at being just five clear of Man City.

Player to watch: Bruno Fernandes
No Premier League outfield player has racked up more minutes for club and country this season than Bruno Fernandes, with Thursday night’s win over Real Sociedad in the Europa League marking Manchester United’s full transition into Bruno Fernandes FC.

There are a great many players who are so integral to their teams you wonder how they would manage without them, but the sheer numbers tell us that nowhere is this more true than United and Bruno. This Is Bruno Fernandes Football Club We’re Talking About.

And the fact that even with him United have been really quite conspicuously rotten on a really quite alarming number of occasions if anything only exaggerates his performance further. What would United look like without their talisman? It quite literally doesn’t bear thinking about.

Perhaps the most compelling element to Bruno Fernandes’ outsized importance to United is how it has remained constant through the manager shift. He isn’t, in truth, a player obviously ideally suited to the Ruben Amorim system, but what he’s done is show that great players can adapt to a system and make it work for them, and they for it.

With the way United’s season now shapes up, we may get the opportunity to see precisely what United look like without Bruno Fernandes a bit more often. It may even start this weekend at Leicester.

Ruben Amorim may say nothing can save United’s season, but what’s beyond doubt is that nothing they do in the league between now and the end of May can do so. Only winning the Europa League has any chance of shifting the needle, and that tournament must now be the priority. The chances to give Bruno a much-needed and hard-earned breather come now in a Premier League season long since doomed to be United’s worst since football was invented.

But even if Fernandes is rested against Leicester, he remains the player to watch. Because so thoroughly are United now built around him that his absence will be every bit as notable as his presence.

Manager to watch: Thomas Frank
It’s the match literally everybody is calling El Might Become Next Manager Of Spurs If They’re Not Careful-ico, Thomas Frank’s Brentford travel to Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth for what should be an enormously watchable slice of Saturday evening entertainment.

Brentford are down to 12th and in danger of meandering towards the end of the season after the bizarre and total collapse of their previously impeccable home form in recent months. They probably do need to continue their improved away form here if they are to remain significant runners in the European fight without requiring the nonsense “If this, then that, and then that” scenarios where Villa and Chelsea and Spurs or United sweep the European pots while finishing outside the European places themselves.

Bournemouth, meanwhile, have blipped at an enormously inopportune time with a pair of back-to-back defeats followed by the most draw-that-feels-like-a-defeat imaginable at Spurs last weekend. Despite that, though, a victory here could lift them right back into contention for that now all-important fifth spot.

Football League game to watch: Sheffield Wednesday v Sheffield United
That’s the good stuff, isn’t it? The Premier League season may be moribund, with neither a title race nor relegation fight to engage us, but you never get that kind of nonsense from the Championship.

Instead there’s a tasty Sunday lunchtime offering from Hillsborough that carries huge weight beyond local bragging rights for both clubs, with the Blades needing the points in their battle with Leeds and Burnley for automatic promotion while the Owls, even sitting as they do down in 11th, know a derby win keeps them firmly in the play-off equation.

European game to watch: Atletico Madrid v Barcelona
It seems there’s a huge title clash every fortnight in La Liga currently, with the latest pitting third-placed Atletico against the form horse of Barcelona.

There is still only a single point separating the top three in Spain, but it does now look Barcelona’s title to lose. They have a game in hand and are avoiding the slip-ups that have dogged both Madrid clubs recently.

A win here for either side wouldn’t be decisive, but it is clearly Atleti’s need that is currently the greater, if they can lift themselves after their latest absurd Champions League misfortune against their big bully local rivals Real.

“Here we go”: Chelsea steal United’s top summer target from under Amorim’s nose – Fabrizio Romano

Manchester United have suffered a hammer blow as Chelsea have agreed a deal for Sporting CP’s Geovany Quenda.

The Red Devils have seen the major improvement that Patrick Dorgu has made on the left hand side of Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 system and are hoping to sign another new full back this summer.

It had been reliably reported that United were very keen on Sporting’s Quenda and that the player was also interested in the move.

The 17 year old was said to be attracted to the idea of playing again under the man who give him his debut at Sporting, Ruben Amorim.

It had also been relayed that Quenda had agreed personal terms with United as the two clubs were trying to thrash out a deal for the wingback.

Nonetheless, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Chelsea have swooped in and stolen the talented youngster from underneath United and Amorim’s noses.

He posted on X in the early morning that “Chelsea agree deal for Portuguese top talent Geovany Quenda, here we go!”

“Medical done for Quenda after secret blitz, he will join Chelsea in 2026.”

“Club to club agreement completed with Sporting and Quenda said yes to Chelsea project & Enzo Maresca’s plans.”

— Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) March 14, 2025

The news will be a crushing blow for United’s recruitment plans in the summer and it will surely irk Amorim that he has been unable to convince one of his former players to join him at Old Trafford.

United have recently been linked to Bayer Leverkusen wingback Jeremie Frimpong and are reportedly set to go head-to-head with rivals Manchester City over the player.

United will now need to dust themselves down and look for a new player who can fill that right wing back position in Amorim’s 3-4-3 system ahead of the summer window.
