United plotting surprise blockbuster €60m summer deal for “terrific” PL creative outlet wanted by fierce rivals – report

Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 system employs two attacking midfielders alongside a striker and Manchester United currently do not have enough quality in that position.

Amad is out injured as is Kobbie Mainoo and both could eventually play further behind while Bruno Fernandes is also having to play as a deep-lying playmaker.

Given Mason Mount’s injury problems and Christian Eriksen’s contract ending in the summer, the head coach wants the Red Devils to go out and secure a quality No 10 once the window opens.

CaughtOffside have added a brand-new name to the list of targets — Morgan Gibbs-White of Nottingham Forest. The Englishman has been one of the standout stars for the high-flying Forest side who are perched as high as third in the Premier League table.

Gibbs-White on United’s radar

The 25-year-old has five goals and six assists this season including a goal and assists against the 20-time English league champions earlier this season.

And his exploits have attracted the interest of almost all of England’s elites, which shows how hard it will be for United to get the deal over the line.

Gibbs-White’s contract is valid until 2027 and while Forest do not want to sell him, an offer of €60 million would be hard to turn down next summer.

“Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United are among the clubs showing an interest in the potential transfer of Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White.

“Sources with a close understanding of Gibbs-White’s situation have informed CaughtOffside that he’s now firmly on the radar of clubs such as Liverpool, Arsenal, Man Utd, Man City and Tottenham.

In-demand ace

“Forest do not want to sell the 25-year-old and are hoping to hold talks over a new contract with him soon. However, CaughtOffside understands that Gibbs-White could perhaps be cleared to leave the club for an offer in the region of €60m.

The “terrific” talent can play all across the midfield and even out wide if needed with his work-rate and creativity a good fit for what Amorim wants from his attacking midfielders.

But given the interest he is attracting, it remains to be seen if INEOS can compete with the other teams in the race given the current financial reality around Old Trafford.

The England international might also not want to leave given the prospect of playing in the Champions League for Forest while United might not be in any European competition next season.

Tributes paid to Poppy Atkinson at Anfield

Friday 14 March 2025 21:40

A series of touching tributes were paid in honour of young Manchester United fan Poppy Atkinson at Friday night’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Anfield.

The 10-year-old supporter, who was tragically killed when she was struck by a car while attending a football training session in Cumbria earlier this month, harboured dreams of playing for United one day and was remembered as her childhood club faced Liverpool on Merseyside.

Before the game, a space was dedicated to Poppy on the social-media graphic announcing our line-up, with Atkinson replacing the name of her hero, Ella Toone, next to the number seven in our listed XI.

In the meantime, a seat in the away dugout was devoted to the youngster, embellished with a shirt that had her name on the back, which remained in place throughout the evening.

A minute’s silence was also observed prior to kick-off at Anfield while both teams wore black armbands for the match, in Poppy’s memory.

The series of tributes was proposed by United head coach Marc Skinner, embraced by his players and led by Toone.

The Reds had previously paid homage to Poppy at last weekend’s FA Cup tie against Sunderland, the team’s first game following her passing, which included our players holding up a shirt with the 10-year-old’s name on it after our opening goal in the 3-1 win.

A fundraiser set up by the youngster’s uncles, which you can donate to here, has since raised more than £41,000 to cover the costs of a memorial and help grassroots football teams across the UK.

Everyone at United continues to send our condolences, love and support to Poppy’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.

Report: Liverpool 3 United Women 1

Friday 14 March 2025 21:33

Manchester United fell to a 3-1 defeat against Liverpool at Anfield in the WSL on Friday night, a result which ends a recent run of seven consecutive league wins.

Marc Skinner made three changes from the side that progressed in the FA Cup against Sunderland last weekend, with Dominique Janssen returning to the XI and both Elisabeth Terland and Jayde Riviere back from short recent injury absences.

Illness in the Liverpool camp in the wake of their statement cup triumph over Arsenal ruled out influential trio Gemma Bonner, Grace Fisk and Ceri Holland.

But while United dominated the ball for large parts of the game, sucker punches late in the first half from Olivia Smith and Fuka Nagano put Liverpool two goals ahead, before Smith bagged a brace with a second-half penalty.

Maya Le Tissier’s well-taken strike ultimately came a little too late in the day to be anything more than consolation from a United perspective.

Defeat, combined with Arsenal’s win over Everton, sees United drop to third in the WSL table on goal difference, but still with a four-point cushion over fourth-place Manchester City in the hunt for Champions League qualification.

Anfield stood silent in memory of Poppy Atkinson.

FIRST HALF

Things got under way following a moment’s silence in tribute to 10-year-old Poppy Atkinson, whose name also adorned a United shirt placed on an empty seat left for her on the bench.

United controlled much of the tempo from the earliest stages, although it took around 13 minutes for either side to craft a meaningful chance. Celin Bizet picked off a loose pass from Liverpool defender Jasmine Matthews, driving a low shot that was well tipped wide by Rachael Laws.

But despite having to reshuffle at the back, the Merseyside hosts were doing an admirable job of frustrating the visiting Reds, closing ranks when the ball reached the final third.

Just over half an hour in, Gabby George got her head to a near-post corner delivery that Laws managed to hold. The Liverpool goalkeeper also denied Grace Clinton from distance with a spectacular parry after our No.8 had wriggled away from two defenders.

Smith’s breakthrough in the closing stages of the half was completely against the run of play. The Canadian utilised her pace on the right flank, before cutting into the box and managing to squeeze a left-footed shot into the far bottom corner of Phallon Tullis-Joyce’s goal.

Liverpool took confidence from getting in front and were able to quickly double that advantage with a rapid breakaway. Sam Kerr chased the ball down the right, with her cutback across the box turned in by Nagano’s first-time finish, curling away from the reach of Tullis-Joyce into the net.

Two Liverpool goals came late in the first half.

SECOND HALF

United were dealt a blow within minutes of the restart when George was withdrawn through injury. But the soon game settled into a similar pattern to the first half, with Skinner’s side doing much of the probing. An early opportunity almost fell to Leah Galton at the far post, but she was just squeezed out by a combination of Laws and Liverpool skipper Taylor Hinds.

Smith took the chance to extend her team’s lead from the penalty spot midway through the second half. Jayde Riviere had been punished for a challenge on Liverpool left-back Alejandra Bernabe as she entered the box, with Smith keeping her composure to convert from 12 yards.

Liverpool added to their lead in the second 45.

With 20 minutes to go and in response to the third goal, Skinner made a triple substitution, Hinata Miyazawa, Rachel Williams and Aoife Mannion tasked with changing the game. Melvine Malard also soon entered the fray.

As United searched, Laws saved comfortably from Miyazawa, before Le Tissier strode forward to join a developing attack late on. The skipper met Miyazawa’s cutback, feinting to shoot to create the space for an effort that beat Laws at the near post. But Liverpool’s two-goal advantage meant they were still able to see out the result through five minutes of stoppage time.

It wasn’t to be United’s night on Merseyside.

Man Utd ‘fully committed’ to signing player who has already ‘agreed everything’ with Arsenal

Man Utd are still ‘fully committed’ to buying Nico Williams this summer despite competition from Arsenal and other big clubs, according to reports.

The Red Devils have been having a terrible time of it this season with Ruben Amorim’s side currently 14th in the Premier League table with only 10 matches to play.

Man Utd have won just five of their 17 Premier League fixtures under the Portuguese head coach with results and performances even worse than under predecessor Erik ten Hag, who was sacked at the end of October.

Amorim has struggled to get his players to adjust to his playing style, philosophy and tactics, while he was afforded just one January transfer window signing in the form of Patrick Dorgu.

It’s clear that his current squad aren’t suited to the tactics Amorim wants to employ and it will now be an important summer transfer window giving the Man Utd boss the players he needs.

And now reports in Spain claim Man Utd are ‘fully committed’ to an ambitious move for Athletic Bilbao winger Williams, who won Euro 2024 in the summer.

The Spain international ‘continues to collect offers’ after producing a man-of-the-match performance in Bilbao’s 3-1 Europa League win over Roma on Thursday, scoring two goals in the process.

Williams has ‘decided to leave’ after ‘many top European clubs have expressed their willingness to pay’ his release clause, which is reportedly set at €58m.

Barcelona, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, and Juventus are all credited with interest but now ‘a new suitor has emerged’.

Man Utd ‘appear on the scene to recruit’ the Spaniard with the winger becoming a ‘priority objective’ as Amorim is ‘looking to undertake a deep rebuild’ of the squad at Old Trafford.

After beating Real Sociedad on Thursday night to progress t0 the quarter-finals of the Europa League, Amorim delivered some positive news about Man Utd midfielder Mason Mount ahead of their match against Leicester City on Sunday.

On Mount, Amorim said: “I think he is going to [be on] the bench.

“We will see, but we need every player and if he is fit, I am going to play him. He cannot play too many minutes, just five minutes of Mason Mount is perfect.”

When asked about how much he’s looking forward to having Mount back, Amorim replied: “I already said, I really love Mason Mount. I see him and I know how he suffers.

“He does everything right. He eats right, his physical aspect is perfect, he is trying too much and maybe he is thinking too much about everything. He was European champion, he is a talent and he is a really talented player.

“When a player does everything like he does, he will always have the support of everybody here in the club.

“So we will try to manage the load and you already saw some players who have a lot of problems during one time, in some moments, he can stay fit and I believe a lot in Mason Mount and we need players like Mason Mount.”

U21s: United 5 West Brom 1

Friday 14 March 2025 20:55

Manchester United’s Under-21s earned just reward for a dominant Friday night performance at Leigh Sports Village as they comfortably defeated visiting West Brom.

A flurry of goals before the half-hour mark gave the young Reds a dominant lead, and they refused rest on their laurels, extending the advantage further before the break as Jack Fletcher netted a three-minute double, assisted twice by his brother Tyler.

West Brom hit back in the second half with a penalty earned and converted by Harry Whitwell, but United held firm for a good home victory.

The young Reds are not back in competitive action until Monday 31 March, when they travel to York to take on Leeds United at the LNER Community Stadium.

It was an enjoyable first half for the young Reds, with James Scanlon shown here demonstrating a clever backheel.

A dominant United created early half-chances, with Habeeb Ogunneye’s teasing ball left unfinished in the area four minutes in and Jack Fletcher’s cross-cum-shot saved after neat footwork. The Baggies showed some threat through Eseosa Sule, who tried an audacious long-range lob, while Deago Nelson headed wide.

But it wasn’t long before the visitors suffered at the hands of a clinical United side. A flowing move from defence began with Godwill Kukonki’s excellent pass under pressure. Tyler Fletcher then drove forward before teeing up Mantato on the right wing. He crossed without hesitation and Biancheri finished while airborne for his 18th goal in all competitions this season.

Scanlon soon reached the same marker for the same campaign when Kukonki acted as initiator once more. His cross-field ball set Sam Murray up on the left wing and while his cross initially evaded Biancheri, Scanlon was on hand to pounce and ultimately poke it home right-footed for a quick second.

The third of a quick flurry came six minutes on, when Sekou Kone won possession, as he did many times on the night. He teed up Biancheri, who repaid the favour as he turned from scorer into provider with a well-weighted pass to Mantato, who had assisted the opener. The 17-year-old winger faced up his man, gave him the eyes and finished clinically with his left.

And there were still more to come before the break. Tyler Fletcher, drifting out to the right-wing, set this one up with a fizzing ball towards his brother, Jack. He finished first-time with his left, as he did again just three minutes later when Tyler pulled another back.

West Brom showed resilience after the break to fight in the early stages and regain a foothold in the game. That resilience earned a goal after 63 minutes, when Harry Whitwell earned and converted a penalty.

Mali youth international Sekou Kone on the ball.

United ensured that would prove only a consolation, rather than a route back into the game, with some controlled possession and a couple of chances. Munro headed Scanlon’s right-wing cross just over the crossbar, and Murray nodded Jack Fletcher’s left-wing centre over, too. Biancheri slipped through Tommy Rowe, player-coach and substitute, late on, but his poked effort went just wide of the right post.

Victor Musa nearly added a sixth in injury time with a lovely left-footed lob from the area’s edge, but it settled onto the roof of the net.

MATCH DETAILS

United: Murdock; Ogunneye (c), Munro, Kukonki (Ngwashi 61), Murray; Kone, T. Fletcher (Rowe 81), J. Fletcher; Mantato (Musa 61), Biancheri, Scanlon (Kamason 81).

Unused subs: Graczyk.

Goals: Biancheri 19, Scanlon 21, Mantato 28, J. Fletcher 41, 44 | Whitwell pen 64

Man Utd transfer: Red Devils get Atletico green light for €30m ‘top target’ to replace Ratcliffe-shamed flop

Manchester United have been given the green light to sign one of their “main targets” for next season to replace one of the five players shamed by Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

In a series of interviews earlier this week, as well as spouting a load of nonsense, Ratcliffe named five players the club is still paying for despite them being signed by the previous regime, just ahead of claiming a number of them are “overpaid or not good enough”.

Ratcliffe told BBC Sport: “If you look at the players we are buying this summer, that we didn’t buy, we’re buying Antony, we’re buying Casemiro, we’re buying [Andre] Onana, we’re buying [Rasmus] Hojlund, we’re buying [Jadon] Sancho. These are all things from the past, whether we like it or not, we’ve inherited those things and have to sort that out.

“For Sancho, who now plays for Chelsea and we pay half his wages, we’re paying £17m to buy him in the summer.”

When asked whether he was suggesting those players were not good enough for Manchester United, he added: “Some are not good enough and some probably are overpaid, but for us to mould the squad that we are fully responsible for, and accountable for, will take time.

“We’ve got this period of transformation where we move from the past to the future.

“There are some great players in the squad as we know, the captain is a fabulous footballer. We definitely need Bruno, he’s a fantastic footballer.”

Onana has been criticised more than most since his £47m move to United in the summer of 2023, and Fichajes now claim the United bosses are looking to replace him with Atletico’s Jan Oblak.

The Slovenian was the losing goalkeeper in the penalty shootout defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League this week, and hardly covered himself in glory, but as one of new sporting director Andrea Berta’s top ten signings he’s has proven himself to be one of the best ‘keepers in the world in the last decade.

It’s claimed ‘everything indicates Oblak will seek a change of scenery’ at the end of the season and although United will face competition the report claims they’re ‘better positioned’ to secure his signing, with €30m thought to be enough.

The report states:

‘The interest in the Slovenian is not exclusive to United. Manchester City also valued his incorporation as a possible replacement for Ederson, although in Old Trafford they seem to be better positioned to close their contract. The “Red Devils” want to rebuild their squad with top-level players and consider that Oblak can be a key piece in their sporting project.

‘Despite the fact that Atlético has a contract with its goalkeeper until 2028, the mattress board would not put obstacles in his departure as long as his economic demands are met. There is talk of a minimum amount of 30 million euros to finalize the operation, an amount that can be assumed for a club with the financial power of United.

‘With the summer market getting closer and closer, everything indicates that Atlético de Madrid’s goal could undergo a significant change and that Oblak’s fate will be in the English league.’

United going all-in to land insanely talented star who lit up Euro 24, would be the signing of the summer – report

Manchester United are reportedly the latest club to join the race for Athletic Club winger Nico Williams ahead of the summer transfer window.

Williams’ future was a hot topic last summer, following his heroics with Spain at Euro 2024. He seemed destined to go to Barcelona, who he was strongly linked to for several weeks. However, a move never got over the line and he ended up staying with his current side.

However, he did not renew his terms with Athletic and will enter the final two years of his deal this summer.

A move to Camp Nou now appears unlikely given Raphinha’s sensational resurgence in form.

Arsenal and Chelsea have been mentioned as the two Premier League clubs pursuing Williams but now, a fresh report has claimed that United are ready to blow them out of the water for his signature.

The Red Devils are expected to be in the market for attacking reinforcements, with both a striker and a left-sided number 10 believed to be on the agenda.

Williams – who primarily plays on the left of the attack for Athletic – has managed nine goals and seven assists in 36 appearances so far this season.

Before United’s 4-1 victory over Real Sociedad at Old Trafford, Williams netted a brace to propel the Basque side past Roma, securing a quarter-final clash with Rangers.

CaughtOffside note that United may have some more money to spend on the 22-year-old if they manage to offload some of the players on their books.

Marcus Rashford and Antony, currently on loan at Aston Villa and Real Betis respectively, have revived their form and are expected to be let go this summer.

United nearly sold Alejandro Garnacho in January, and if he departs in the upcoming window, the urgency to sign Williams would only intensify.

Williams’ release clause is thought to be anywhere between £50m and £60m.

Alarm bells ringing at Old Trafford as silky United operator has admirers in Real Madrid – report

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo’s future will dominate headlines in the weeks to come, given the outcome of recent talks between both parties.

His current deal is valid until 2027, with the club having the option to add another year. Given the Englishman’s performances for the first team, the club wants to award him a new deal that reflects his position in the squad.

The only problem has been that his camp has been asking for £180,000 per week plus bonuses and given INEOS’ financial difficulties, there is very little chance of those demands being accepted.

Which is why The Peoples Person had relayed that the 19-year-old is currently inclined towards rejecting his boyhood club in favour of moving abroad despite interest from Chelsea in his services.

Real like Mainoo

United are still trying to agree a new deal with the England international before the current season ends but should they fail to do so, INEOS could agree to sell him for £70 million.

Defensa Central have now revealed that Real Madrid are “very interested” in the Carrington graduate with Mainoo having plenty of admirers in the Real Madrid board.

Juni Calafat, head of scouting, is monitoring the United No 37 but Florentino Pérez does not have the money to spend big to land Mainoo this summer.

However, they are ready to try later provided his price drops and a new agreement is not reached between both parties. Los Blancos are always on the lookout for players with expiring contracts as seen from their acquisition of Kylian Mbappe.

Long-term target?

“One footballer who is on the radar of Juni Calafat, head of scouting, is Kobbie Mainoo . The young British player plays for Manchester United and has no intention of renewing his contract, although it is true that it expires in 2028.

“His style of play is quite popular in the Chamartín elite. He’s highly regarded by certain important figures at the club, although it’s hard to imagine the president would approve a significant financial outlay. He’s also a player who has the affection of Old Trafford, so the Red Devils aren’t going to let him go so easily.

“As of today, it seems unlikely that Real Madrid will want to sign this player in the summer. It seems that, in any case, it will be later.”

United should try and ensure Mainoo stays put at Old Trafford but in case an agreement cannot be found, the Spanish giants or any other club should be made to pay a record sum for such a talented midfield ace.

Tuchel fires pointed warning to Rashford after handing him first England call-up in a year

England boss Thomas Tuchel has urged Manchester United star Marcus Rashford not to “fall back on old routines” following his call-up to the national team for the first time in 12 months.

Tuchel announced his first squad as England gaffer earlier on Friday and Rashford was included.

It’s time to reveal Thomas Tuchel’s first #ThreeLions squad! 👀🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

— England (@England) March 14, 2025

The Three Lions are set to face Albania and Latvia at Wembley in their first World Cup 2026 qualifiers.

Rashford has enjoyed a dramatic turnaround in form since leaving United and joining Aston Villa on loan during the January transfer window.

Rashford has yet to score a goal for Villa but has provided four assists in the nine appearances he’s made across all competitions.

Speaking about his decision to call up Rashford, Tuchel told reporters [via 90min], “With Marcus, he is a familiar face but a different situation.”

“I felt that he had a huge impact at Aston Villa, he made a huge impact from the bench mostly. The impact was impressive. The physical impact was impressive and most importantly, his work rate, his defensive ability and tracking back was impressive.”

Tuchel pointedly added, “I had the strong feeling that we should nominate him, bring him in and to push him to stay on that level to not fall back on old routines. This camp is to push him to stay on this level.”

The England boss further stated about his squad selections, “Everyone who is with us on this journey and in this first camp is a contender for the World Cup. Every player is part of this first step. At the same time, it’s only the first step so the nomination is not the nomination for America.”

“We had tough decisions to take and we didn’t make it easy for ourselves. We waited very long until Champions League games were over until we took our last decisions. It is important to be in the first camp and if you are in the first camp, you are in the first step of the journey.”

Reacting to his return to England, Rashford wrote on his Instagram story, “Never stop believing. Can’t wait to get started.”

Meanwhile, United are back in action on Sunday when they go away to the King Power Stadium to take on Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester City.

Man Utd news: Marcus Rashford breaks silence on England call-up with eight-word statement

Aston Villa loanee Marcus Rashford has broken his silence on his surprise inclusion in Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad for the upcoming internationals.

The former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager announced his first squad for their World Cup qualifying games against Latvia and Albania this month, including the rejuvenated Manchester United star.

His last appearance for England was in March 2024 in the home defeat to Brazil and he was not included in the Euro 2024 squad by Gareth Southgate having fallen out of form at United at the end of last season.

READ MORE: 16 Conclusions on Tuchel’s first England squad: Henderson, Rashford in, Forest, LGBTQ+ ignored

Under Ruben Amorim, he struggled to rediscover that spark despite netting the first goal of his tenure in their away draw with Ipswich Town and he later departed for Villa on loan until the end of the season.

That decision has been completely justified as he has notched four assists in nine games and helped them progress in the Champions League and FA Cup since arriving.

With the likes of Jamie Gittens, Liam Delap, Adam Wharton and Morgan Gibbs-White all missing out, Rashford’s inclusion is certainly interesting and it gives us an insight into the type of team Tuchel is looking to build.

Rashford’s message to the fans

Upon his selection, Rashford expressed his gratitude and relayed an eight-word message through social media to the fans. He wrote: “Never stop believing *England flag emoji* Can’t wait to get started *praying emoji*.”

It is certainly a swift turnaround from his final month at United where he was excluded from the first-team squad for weeks. The likely answer is that he is benefitting from being unburdened by the collective dispair that currently looms over Old Trafford and his new environment is one of excitement, freedom and a clear direction.

Tuchel was quizzed over Rashford’s inclusion given it was one of the big stories of the announcement, to which he claimed his recent impact has been impressive.

“With Marcus, he is a familiar face but a different situation,” the England boss said. “I felt that he had a huge impact at Aston Villa, he made a huge impact from the bench mostly. The impact was impressive.

“The physical impact was impressive and most importantly, his workrate, his defensive ability and tracking back was impressive. I had the strong feeling that we should nominate him, bring him in and to push him to stay on that level to not fall back on old routines. This camp is to push him to stay on this level.”

Given that Villa have an option to buy the United graduate for £40million at the end of the season, it will likely depend on their financial situation and how the rest of the campaign pans out in regards to their European and domestic cup runs, as well as their final league position.

Whilst another loanee in Marco Asensio has been in better form, there is no obligation or option to buy the Paris Saint-Germain attacker and Rashford’s deal could be a far easier negotiation which could suggest he might be moving there permanently in the summer. Until then, we’ll have to wait and see how the season unfolds.
