United plotting £34m summer raid on French giants for “special” talent who can replace under-performing ace – report

Ruben Amorim’s need for a striker and a wingback are pretty well-known at this stage but if budget permits, the Manchester United head coach could do with another elite goalkeeper.

Andre Onana has looked rather shaky at the back, committing huge errors in both the Premier League as well as the Europa League since the Portuguese tactician’s arrival.

Add to it the uncertainty surrounding Altay Bayindir’s future and Tom Heaton’s contract situation and it is clear to see that another shot-stopper is needed at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils are looking all across Europe for the perfect fit with the likes of Diogo Costa, Gregor Kobel finding mention while even Championship stars like James Trafford and Aynsley Pears are on the club’s radar.

Chevalier on United’s radar

Givemesport have now revealed that Lille goalie Lucas Chevalier is another name that has caught United’s eye given his fine performances for the French club this season.

The 23-year-old has kept 11 clean sheets in 39 games, making 3.21 saves per game and his current deal ends in two years, thereby raising the possibility of a cut-price summer exit.

The Ligue 1 side would like to earn close to £34 million from his sale especially as the likes of Manchester City, Barcelona, Chelsea and Newcastle have all been linked with him recently.

Can United get the deal over the line?

“Manchester United are considering a summer move for Chevalier, according to GMS sources, after he has grabbed their attention at a time when the long-term future of Andre Onana as their first-choice goalkeeper is being contemplated behind the scenes in response to a string of errors throughout the season.

“Although the Red Devils may have renewed optimism about their chances of being able to seal a deal for the Ligue 1 title-winner thanks to his contract situation, Lille are not prepared to sanction his departure for a cut-price fee and set a valuation of close to £34 million when Barcelona and Manchester City were circling ahead of the winter window.”

The “special” star has earned a call-up to the French national team with his recent displays which goes to show how talented he is.

Chevalier could come in as backup for Onana to add competition for the No 1 jersey if Bayindir leaves but whether he will agree to join as a backup is not clear.

Also, whether the Red Devils can afford such an outlay on the goalkeeping position in the summer remains to be seen.

United have the perfect Quenda alternative as summer move for two-time CL-winning Real Madrid ace lined up – report

Manchester United suffered a major transfer blow on Friday as news broke of Chelsea hijacking their summer deal for Sporting CP’s Geovany Quenda.

The Blues offered a more lucrative deal for both the club and the player and as a result, despite a lot of hard work behind the scenes, the Red Devils missed out on the Portuguese wonderkid.

With Diogo Dalot’s future also up in the air as per reports, Ruben Amorim needs another wingback in the summer. January signing Patrick Dorgu can play on the right and Fichajes have claimed United have an option for the left flank.

Real Madrid’s Ferland Mendy is on United’s radar and his defensive attributes would bode well for the Red Devils who have leaked goals left right and centre this season.

Mendy interest

The Frenchman is versatile as well, capable of playing as a left-sided centre-back as well as a left wingback. And his €18 million market value suits United given their current financial situation.

“Ferland Mendy’s future at Real Madrid remains a mystery. This situation has sparked the interest of several European clubs, including Manchester United , who see Mendy as a significant market opportunity.

“The English club, in the midst of a defensive reinforcement search, has set its sights on the Real Madrid left-back.

“Mendy is seeking a much higher salary than what Real Madrid has offered him so far, which has created uncertainty about his future in the Spanish capital.”

Wage demands

The France international currently earns €200,385 gross per week (via capology), and the report states the 20-time English league champions are “willing to promise him a higher salary”.

Given his age and considering past mistakes at Old Trafford, INEOS are unlikely to break their wage structure for the Real Madrid ace.

The former Olympique Lyon ace only has two assists this season and is quite injury-prone. And he has not exactly set the stage alight when it comes to the attacking part of his game.

Amorim wants wingbacks who are comfortable on the ball and can bomb forward at will and the two-time Champions League winner does not fit the bill.

So for now, take this report with a huge pinch of salt, especially as the Spanish outlet also incorrectly states Mendy is set to become a free agent in the summer.

Man Utd: Scholes convinced Amorim dropped transfer hint over £50.3m Casemiro replacement

Paul Scholes reckons Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim dropped a transfer hint over a possible £50.3m Casemiro replacement ahead of the Red Devils’ victory over Real Sociedad on Thursday.

United ran out 4-1 winners over the La Liga side, coming from behind thanks to a Bruno Fernandes hat-trick and a late Diogo Dalot goal to secure a 5-2 aggregate win to set up a quarter-final against Lyon.

The Europa League represents United’s only remaining opportunity for silverware and there only chance of qualifying for European football next season, with victory granting entry into the Champions League.

That would provide a huge boost for Amorim ahead of what he hopes will be a summer overhaul of his squad given the money playing in Europe’s showcase competition provides.

And Scholes reckons they could use some of that money to trigger Spain international Martin Zubimendi’s Real Soeciedad release clause, which stands at £50.3m.

Liverpool agreed terms with the Spanish club to sign Zubimendi last summer before the 26-year-old turned them down, but it’s been suggested he’s now open to a Premier League move, with Manchester City among his suitors.

Amorim spoke about the Spanish star in his pre-match interview ahead of United’s Europa League last-16 win over Real Sociedad on Thursday.

Asked about his inclusion for the second leg after he missed the first through illness, Amorim said: “He’s a top player that can change a team.

“Especially in that position (defensive midfield) he’s one position that can read and block transitions.

“He’s also the first guy in the build-up, I know the player really well, everybody knows he’s a top player that can change the team.”

And Scholes saw that as evidence that Amorim would love to add him to his squad this summer.

The Red Devils legend said: “From that interview, the manager quite likes Zubimendi!

“If we sell three or four players we might be able to buy him but tonight’s a big night.”

Captain Fernandes said after the game that he was “really happy” with his side’s display and is “confident” they can go all the way.

Speaking after the match, United captain Fernandes told TNT Sports: “It’s all about winning at this club.

“We need to win games, and this competition there’s no other option. We have a long way to go still, but we’re confident if we focus on every game we have ahead, we can win games.

“It was good for us how quickly we reacted. We got level straight away, the penalty is a little bit unlucky but then we got ours from a great Casemiro ball. We’re really happy with the performance and the win.”

United star sets incredible new Europa League record after his heroics in 4-1 demolition of Sociedad

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has set a new Europa League record, following his hat-trick in the 4-1 demolition of Real Sociedad on Friday night.

Mikel Oyarzabal gave Sociedad the lead just 10 minutes in from the penalty spot after VAR penalised Matthijs de Ligt for a foul. However, their advantage didn’t last too long as Fernandes restored parity, also through a penalty kick.

Led by their relentless skipper, United were intense and created several chances before eventually getting their big break moments after half time.

Patrick Dorgu was brought down inside the Sociedad box and Fernandes stepped up with confidence yet again, to send Alex Remiro the wrong way.

Fernandes completed his hat-trick late in the game with an excellent finish after some good play from Alejandro Garnacho.

Diogo Dalot put the icing on the cake, netting United’s fourth goal to wrap up a dominant performance.

Fernandes’ treble against Sociedad took him to 41 combined goals and assists in the Europa League – no player in the competition’s history, since it was rebranded in 2009, has managed more goal contributions.

The United playmaker has made 53 appearances in the Europa League – 19 for former club Sporting CP and 34 for the Red Devils.

His 24 goals and 17 assists means he has now gone ahead of ex-Arsenal man Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in terms of goal involvements.

Aubameyang remains the Europa League’s highest goalscorer with 34 goals. Fernandes is 10 strikes away from catching up to the Gabon international.

Two ex-United players that Fernandes could also surpass in the goalscoring chart are Radamel Falcao (30) and Romelu Lukaku (27).

Only Napoli legend Dries Mertens tops Fernandes when it comes to assists.

United are back in action on Sunday when they go away to the King Power Stadium to face Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester City.

Key United figure defects to rival PL club after calling it quits at Old Trafford – report

Outgoing Manchester United senior men’s first-team doctor Jim Moxon is set to join Brighton and Hove Albion, reports The Telegraph.

Earlier in the week, it emerged that Moxon alongside head of sports medicine Gary O’Driscoll have made the decision to part ways with the club.

O’Driscoll joined United in September 2023 after 15 years at Arsenal, in what was regarded as a big coup for the Red Devils.

It’s understood that O’Driscoll drove a series of positive changes across the medical department and laid the foundation for further improvements in the future.

Moxon on the other hand, originally joined United on an interim basis two years ago to fill in for Steve McNally, who exited in February 2023 after more than 16 years of service.

Moxon’s role was made permanent shortly after. It’s understood that Moxon’s decision to depart United was motivated by a desire to pursue another opportunity elsewhere and now, The Telegraph have shed further light on this.

“Telegraph Sport understands that Moxon – who has been United’s senior men’s first-team doctor for the past two years – is in line to join Brighton, who have declined to comment.”

“It is unclear when Moxon is scheduled to make the move, given it is understood that he and O’Driscoll will stay at United for a period to ensure there is no disruption in medical support during the final months of the season as the club search for replacements.”

It was stated that the departures of O’Driscoll and Moxon are not related to the latest round of staff redundancies that were recently announced by the club.

The exits of both men are also not as a result of the injury crisis United are currently dealing with.

Ruben Amorim is without several payers through injury. Lisandro Martinez has been ruled out for the rest of the season while Amad is in a race against time to feature competitively before the campaign comes to a close. Luke Shaw also remains a long-term absentee.

Mason Mount recently returned to training as did Manuel Ugarte. Harry Maguire, Leny Yoro, Kobbie Mainoo, Jonny Evans, Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton remain sidelined.

Bruno Fernandes has hit back at Ratcliffe after the Man Utd chief’s criticism

Manchester United has hit back at Sir Jim Ratcliffe over the co-owner’s criticism of his teammates and responded to Roy Keane’s blast about his captaincy.

Amid a whole load of nonsense spouted by Ratcliffe in a series of interviews this week, the British billionaire named five players as he claimed several stars at the club were either “overpaid or not good enough”.

After scoring a hat-trick in his side’s 4-1 win over Real Sociedad in the Europa League, which secured a quarter-final with Lyon after a 5-2 aggregate victory, Fernandes admitted it was “not nice” to hear Ratcliffe’s criticism, hinting that it’s not the players but the club that’s to blame for the hefty contracts.

“We need to prove ourselves every day in training, every day that we have a game,” Fernandes said. “We can’t relax at this club.

“You know that there’s a big standard, a big attention that you get from the media, from everywhere. You need to realise that sometimes you need to put your focus on your game, trying to improve yourself.

“It’s not nice to hear certain things, obviously. I don’t think that any player likes to hear criticism or things that are talked about to you, that you’re not good enough or you’re overpaid or whatever.

“Everyone has their own contract. The club agrees to do the contracts at the time you come here or at the time you do a new contract or whatever and it’s about yourself, proving that you can be important for the club.”

Fernandes was singled out by a very angry Roy Keane last month as the chief “f***ing imposter” in Amorim’s team, but the Red Devils skipper took the high ground when asked about the United legend’s thoughts.

“Everyone has an opinion and that’s fine,” Fernandes said of Keane’s comments. “I can’t change the mind of people. Like everything I have to do is go on the pitch and try to do the best I can for the club.

“Roy Keane was an amazing captain for the club, one of the best as everyone says. I didn’t have the chance to see much from him, only the last few years, but was a great player that won everything for the club.

“He’s massively respected from everyone and has all my respect. He has to give his opinion in a programme and this is what he thinks about me.

“What I’m doing on the pitch to try to change his mind or trying to do something that he probably sees as a good thing. Obviously, I do it in my own way, I don’t want to copy anyone.

“I try to be the best captain that I can for my team-mates, I try to help everyone in the best way I can and the best way I know.

“I have a lot of things to improve, not only as a captain but as a player, as a person, as a human being – and that’s fine.

“Criticism is going to be always part (of the game) and it’s going to make me grow and understand that there’s still a long way to go.”

“It looks fantastic”: United legend gushing over United’s new stadium plans, says it’s been an “exciting week”

Manchester United icon Paul Scholes has thrown his weight behind the club’s decision to leave Old Trafford and move into a brand new stadium.

Earlier this week, United announced grand plans to build a state-of-the-art 100,000-seater stadium on the existing site.

The new ground will cost a whooping £2billion to build and will be the catalyst for the regeneration of the wider Old Trafford area.

United unveiled designs and scaled models of the new stadium and surrounding area, which have been conceived by award-winning architect Norman Foster.

Speaking on TNT Sports, Scholes insisted that while he has many happy memories from his playing days at Old Trafford, the time is right for United to move on.

The 11-time Premier League winner also admitted to being impressed by what he has seen so far.

“I was quite excited about it, obviously this stadium holds a lot of happy memories for me.”

“But look, I have played in some of the greatest stadiums in the world. You look at the Santiago Bernabeu and the Nou Camp, the San Siro, they’ve got great history.”

“This place has got that type of great history about it as well, but I think it is time that Manchester United caught up stadium-wise. As much as it will be sad to say goodbye, I think the time is right to move to a new, better, bigger, brilliant stadium that it looks like this one is going to be.”

Scholes also lauded Sir Jim Ratcliffe for being communicative and open with fans – something the Glazers have consistently failed to do since they assumed control of United.

“I do [like the look of it], it looks fantastic. “If it is deliverable, I don’t know how much it is going to cost. If that money can be raised I don’t know but I hope so.”

“I think it has been an exciting week in some ways, an owner actually communicating with the fans and the people of Manchester, which has not happened for quite some time now.”

“I know they are only words and things need to be proven, but there were some exciting things in there. I always think the team is the most exciting thing and the most important thing.”

United are aiming to complete construction of the new stadium in five years.

Video: United’s 18-year-old poacher nets 19th goal of the season, he’s exactly what Amorim needs

Manchester United u21s hosted West Bromwich Albion at Leigh Sports Village on Friday night in Premier League 2 action.

After losing their last three fixtures in all competitions, which Travis Binnion’s side would have felt was unjust, the young reds looked to get back to winning ways.

Habeeb Ogunneye threatened early with a dangerous ball across the area just four minutes in.

It took until the 19th minute for United to find the net. Tyler Fletcher drove forward before laying off to Bendito Mantato on the right wing, who crossed first time for Biancheri to finish from close range for his 19th goal in all competitions this season.

James Scanlon then netted his 18th of the season just two minutes later.

Godwill Kukonki launched the attack again with a cross-field ball to Sam Murray on the left wing, whose cross found Scanlon ready to pounce inside the area to make it 2-0.

The third goal in quick succession came six minutes later when Biancheri played through Mantato who took on his marker before finishing clinically into the top corner.

The goals kept coming though with Jack Fletcher joining the action. The move started with Tyler Fletcher floating out to the right wing before finding his brother Jack centrally to finish off with his left boot.

The brotherly connection was on show again moments later to make it 5-0 going into the break, with father Darren watching on.

Tyler Fletcher broke to the byline again before cutting back for Jack to notch his second of the night.

With the match already wrapped up the second half was a quieter 45 minutes as United were happy to hold possession as West Brom just looked to concede no more.

The visitors did pull back a consolation effort in the 63rd minute though when they won a penalty which was dispatched by Harry Whitwell.

The three points sees United move up into 6th place in the table with two matches in hand on most of the teams above them. The young reds are now off for the international break and return to action on 31st March when they visit Leeds United.

“Done deal”: Chelsea hijack another United transfer less than 24 hours after snatching Quenda – report

Chelsea have reportedly completed a deal to sign Sporting CP midfielder Dario Essugo on the same day that they snapped up his compatriot Geovany Quenda from under Manchester United’s nose.

Earlier on Friday, it emerged that Chelsea managed to sign Quenda, who was strongly linked to United and believed to be guaranteed to reunite with Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford in the summer.

Quenda will however not join Chelsea immediately. He will link up with the Blues in 2026 and sign a seven-year contract.

Now, it has been claimed Quenda isn’t the only Sporting player they’ve snatched from United’s reach. According to CNN Portugal, Enzo Maresca’s side have sealed a deal for Dario Essugo, who was mentioned to be on the Red Devils’ radar.

A previous report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United were in pursuit of Essugo. The 20-year-old is currently on loan at Las Palmas from Sporting.

He has been a regular for the relegation-threatened La Liga side this season, making 17 top-flight appearances. Essugo has scored just once in that period.

The defensive midfielder has caught the eye with his dominant performances in midfield and has even been linked to the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona. Essugo’s average of 4.8 tackles and interceptions per 90 is the best return of any midfield regular in La Liga so far this term.

CNN Portugal notes that the United target will arrive in West London this summer and will put pen to paper on a seven-year deal. Essugo will cost Chelsea €22m.

This information has been corroborated by A Bola, who explain, “Deal done. Dario Essugo will be a Chelsea player next season. The transfer with the Blues was finalised in the last few hours with the Lions receiving a fixed €25 million (without variables).

“A very significant payment for the defensive midfielder, who was trained at Alvalade and has been in great form this season at the Spanish club Las Palmas.”

However, journalist Ben Jacobs reveals that the transfer is not necessarily done, as talks between Chelsea and Sporting are ongoing.

Jacobs wrote on X, “Chelsea are also in talks with Sporting for 20-year-old defensive midfielder Dário Essugo, who is currently on loan at Las Palmas. Deal not done yet but club-to-club talks are taking place.”

Nevertheless, it certainly seems like Chelsea have beat United to the services of the highly rated youngster.
