Surprise duo pursuing summer deal for Ten Hag favourite, United star not in Amorim’s plans – report

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is planning a clearout in the summer and Jonny Evans is one high-profile name on that list.

The Northern Ireland veteran signed for a second time with the Red Devils last summer and initially, it looked like he would provide backup while providing experience in the dressing room.

Instead, due to multiple injuries, Evans ended up making 30 appearances last season and won the FA Cup as well. Erik ten Hag also used him seven times in the current campaign before his sacking.

Amorim, however, handed him two appearances and realised that the 37-year-old struggles in his high-intensity system and since then, the three-time Premier League winner has not made another appearance.

Evans set to leave

His contract is up in the summer and there are no plans of offering him another new deal but the centre-back still has no plans of hanging up his boots just yet.

Birmingham World have relayed that two Championship clubs who are fighting for promotion to the English top-flight are eyeing the Carrington graduate on a free deal.

Evans’ former club West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield United are the two sides interested in the defender and both are looking to agree a pre-contract with the United No 35.

The Baggies are sixth in the standings while the Blades are third and irrespective of whether they get promoted or not, they feel Evans is the right fit who can add quality to the backline as well as a ton of experience.

Championship duo chasing him

He has 96 appearances for West Brom and manager Tony Mowbray wants to add a couple of veterans to his team and the United star fits the bill.

The Northern Ireland international is a proven winner and has won the Champions League winner as well as all domestic honours with the Red Devils.

It was a surprise to see him rejoin his boyhood club last summer but he certainly impressed and earned yet another contract extension last summer. But his road is set to end here with Amorim not really counting on him.

Evans had offers from Rangers and Saudi Arabia but he chose to stay. It will be interesting to see where he lands up at the end of the campaign.

A clean sheet for United vs Leicester will make Premier League history, but goals will be scarce

Manchester United travel to Leicester City in the final game of March before the international break.

There have been 140 matches between the two sides with United coming out on top in 73 of them.

Leicester have won 36 and there have been 31 draws between the two sides in all competitions.

Here are three storylines that will whet the appetite before tomorrow evening’s late kick off.

United’s fine recent record versus Leicester

The Red Devils have already beaten Leicester three times this season, in the league, FA Cup and Carabao Cup, all at Old Trafford.

The BBC report that “Leicester City have lost their last three Premier League games against Manchester United without scoring. They had been unbeaten in the previous four meetings.”

United have done well historically in Leicester however as they have lost just one of their last eight Premier League fixtures at the King Power Stadium, a 4-2 defeat in October 2021.

In fact they are on a streak of five consecutive wins against Ruud van Nistelrooy’s team.

The Foxes in horrendous form

United have hardly set the world alight domestically this season but their problems pale into insignificance in comparison to Leicester.

“Leicester have lost 12 of their past 13 Premier League games, including their last five without scoring a single goal. They could become only the fifth Premier League team to draw a blank in six successive matches.”

They have also lost their last six Premier League games with an aggregate score of 0-15.

The Foxes could become the first Premier League team to lose seven successive home games without scoring.

Both clubs are shot-shy

Leicester’s struggles in front of goal probably come as no surprise when it is considered that their 251 shots and 85 on target are the lowest totals in the entire league.

United have also struggled in this regard as their average of 13 shots per game this season is their second-lowest on record in a single Premier League campaign since records began in 1997-1998.

To put their struggles in context, leaders Liverpool have scored ten more goals than the two teams combined.

Nonetheless, United have just come off the back of a morale-boosting 4-1 victory over Real Sociedad in the Europa League and will hope to enter the international break with a positive result in the league.

Alex is a huge Manchester United fan, inspired by greats of his homeland such as George Best, Harry Gregg and Norman Whiteside. Grew up pretending to be Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the back garden, with little success.

United plotting sensational swoop for 17yo French record-breaking jewel, scouts have raved about him – report

Manchester United could do with adding more quality in the middle of the park in the summer given the current options at Ruben Amorim’s disposal.

Even though Casemiro is playing well at the moment, he does not fit the head coach’s long-term vision and neither does Christian Eriksen with both expected to leave once the season concludes.

Kobbie Mainoo is still to find his best position in the new 3-4-3 system which is why Bruno Fernandes is having to play as a deep-lying playmaker at the moment.

Amorim wants the club captain to return to playing as an attacking midfielder and multiple talents from across Europe are being monitored.

Ayyoub Bouaddi in demand

The latest name on that list comes courtesy TBR Football with the report claiming the Red Devils have joined the race for Lille wonderkid Ayyoub Bouaddi.

The 17-year-old broke a bunch of records last season including becoming the youngest player to feature for the French club in a European club competition game and in Ligue 1, while also becoming the youngest to start in a UEFA Champions League match for Lille.

He can play all across the midfield and even as an auxiliary centre-back but excels as a central midfielder. Scouts have come back with “glowing” reports on him after watching him extensively this season.

And apart from the Old Trafford side, there is interest from Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City, Aston Villa and Brighton. Not only English sides but also Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig are also monitoring proceedings.

“Sources have told TBR Football that Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United, Aston Villa and Brighton have all taken the chance to watch Ayyoub Bouaddi in action.

“TBR Football has also been told that the Premier League clubs have been left with ‘glowing’ reports on the teenager.

Lille will not let go so easily

“But there is more than just interest from the Premier League in Bouaddi, with Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig having all watched him this year.”

It must be remembered that the Ligue 1 giants are already set to lose both Angel Gomes and Jonathan David in the summer sho they will fight tooth and nail to hold on to their prized jewel.

Also, the player is only 17 so he will not be able to join United before January 2026 and given United’s immediate requirement, it will be interesting to see if the club still proceeds with the deal.

The France U21 international has a contract until 2027 and is valued at €25 million as per Transfermarkt. Given the interest in his services, it will not be easy for INEOS to secure his signature.

Plenty of Lille players are on United’s radar including former Carrington graduate Gomes as well as goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier. The 20-time English league champions have a great relationship with the French club given their recent deal for Leny Yoro last summer.

Ratcliffe admits he’d sell Man Utd if he got Glazer-level abuse amid full takeover claim

Man Utd co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has admitted that if he was forced to “retreat into the shadows” like the Glazer family then he would sell up.

The British billionaire and INEOS completed a deal to buy 27.7 per cent of the Premier League club in February last year.

Ratcliffe and his team assumed control of the football operation at Man Utd with the INEOS owner already making a number of difficult and controversial decisions.

Man Utd chose to keep Erik ten Hag on over the summer before sacking him early inot the new season and hiring Ruben Amorim, who has had a poor start to his time at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils are currently 14th in the Premier League and Ratcliffe has made the mood around the club even bleaker by implementing a number of cost-cutting measures.

That has made Ratcliffe extremely unpopular already in his first year at the club and the Man Utd co-owner insists he could walk away if the abuse got too much.

Ratcliffe told The Sunday Times: “I mean, I can put up with it for a while. I don’t mind being unpopular because I get that nobody likes seeing Manchester United down where they are, and nobody likes the decisions we’re having to make at the moment.

“If I draw a bit of the ire, I can put up with that. But I’m no different to the average person. It’s not nice, particularly for friends and family.

“So, eventually, if it reached the extent that the Glazer family have been abused, then I’d have to say, look, enough’s enough guys, let somebody else do this.

“They can’t really come to a match, the Glazers. They’ve retreated into the shadows a bit now, so I’m getting all the stick.

“We bought in and I haven’t seen them since. It’s, ‘thank you, Jim, you’re doing a really good job’.

“At the moment, I don’t have security, I don’t have to walk around like that. But it would defeat the object, wouldn’t it? You couldn’t tolerate it at that level, it just wouldn’t be fun.”

But Football Insider insists that a ‘full takeover [is] now on the cards’ as the issue of who pays for a potential new £2billion stadium is debated.

Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness thinks it’s a “big issue” and could lead to a full takeover of the club by Ratcliffe and INEOS.

Wyness told Football Insider: “You can also see rumblings of discontent with Ratcliffe and the Glazer Family. That’s a big issue coming up, in my opinion.

“There’s this £2billion stadium coming, and I think they will find the money to finance it – but just look at the Glazer debt.

“There’s going to have to be some financial engineering and a way for Ratcliffe to take that Glazer debt over.

“He has to keep the club from swimming under a huge burden of debt. There’s a lot of work to be done.”

On Ratcliffe, Wyness added: “He’s showing a complete lack of understanding of how to run a football club and how to maintain the culture. The stadium design is very impressive – but is Ratcliffe the right man to lead this club?

“There are still some big questions on the football side. And let’s not forget, Man United are a football club. That’s what everyone seems to forget.

“When I took over at Villa, I found they were running a catering business that happened to play football.

“Man United will only increase revenue if they are winning on the football pitch. What we’ve seen in the last couple of seasons has been disastrous.

“The jury’s out on Ratcliffe. All those lovely artists impressions don’t make a difference.”

Sir Jim Ratcliffe reveals one manager that Man Utd should never have appointed

Sir Jim Ratcliffe says would not have appointed David Moyes as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor if he’d been in charge of Man Utd decisions at the time.

The Red Devils are having a nightmare season with Ruben Amorim appointed as Erik ten Hag’s successor in November after a poor start to the campaign.

However, the Portuguese head coach has actually made things worse at Old Trafford with Man Utd currently 14th in the Premier League with ten games left of the season.

Amorim has won just five of his first 17 Premier League matches in charge of the Red Devils and Man Utd are at risk of having no European football next term unless they win the Europa League.

Ratcliffe conducted a series of interviews on Monday to address a number of issues at the club, including the current terrible results and performances on the pitch, as well as the terrible recruitment over the last few years.

And, in another interview, this time with The Times, Ratcliffe has claimed that Man Utd should never have appointed current Everton boss Moyes, who succeeded Ferguson after the Scot left the club in 2013.

Ratcliffe said: “The way I look at it is that you had two management teams at Manchester United for the past 12 years who did a poor job because the owners weren’t like, say, Steve Parish [Crystal Palace] and Daniel Levy [Tottenham Hotspur], they weren’t really into the details.

“Those two know what’s going on. They’re there every day and the management at their clubs are on a short leash.

“The management of Manchester United have been given a huge amount of rope. The owners just managed the club and left the football side alone and they’ve made a lot of very poor decisions over 12 years, stupid things. They made a complete cock-up of it, shocking really. They couldn’t see where they were headed.

“The first management group, they thought they understood and wanted to get involved in buying footballers but they didn’t have the knowledge to buy footballers, you know, so they went in the marketplace, spraying money around and it was just random, wasn’t it?

“I don’t subscribe to the school of thought that says, well, that’s just life in football, ups and downs, these things happen, because if I look at Real Madrid and Barcelona and Bayern Munich, they don’t do that. They just stay at the top. And it’s not like that here because it’s been poorly managed and they’ve made poor decisions.

“Look, I like David Moyes, and I think he’s a really good manager, but to go from Sir Alex Ferguson to Moyes is not where I would have gone.

“Moyes stepped into the shoes of Ferguson, who’s won the Premier League 13 times, who won the Champions League twice and then you’re handing over to a guy that has never managed big players and had never won anything. He’s not necessarily got the personality to stand in front of them all.

“And I don’t think Real Madrid would have made that choice as coach. If you look at coaches, a club can’t always get it right, but they should have found the best chief executive in the world, and the best coach in the world, because Manchester United is the best club in the world. Instead they got both of those decisions wrong.

“So, in my mind, we have a very professional partnership with the Glazer family. But have you met them? They’re really honest, straightforward, not what you expect when you read about them in the press. And they’re both [Avram and Joel — the most involved in the club] passionate about Manchester United. I like them as people — to be honest, they could have given us a bloody hard time, couldn’t they, after we cocked up with Dan Ashworth and Erik ten Hag? Could have, but didn’t.”

Skinner pinpoints “uncharacteristic” reason for United’s loss vs. Liverpool despite having “control of the game”

Manchester United boss Marc Skinner has pinpointed his side’s failure to be ruthless enough in front of goal as the reason behind their “uncharacteristic” defeat to Liverpool.

Liverpool beat United 3-1 to dent their chances of challenging Chelsea for the Women’s Super League title.

United were the dominant side in the first half but the hosts took the lead against the run of play when Olivia Smith fired past Phallon Tullis-Joyce in the 42nd minute.

Fuka Nagano doubled Liverpool’s advantage in first-half stoppage time, finishing off a counter-attack.

The Reds had a mountain to climb and in the second half and it got worse after Smith added a third goal from the penalty spot.

United could only manage to grab a late consolation through captain Maya Le Tissier.

After the final whistle, Skinner spoke to MUTV and gave his verdict on the performance and the disappointing result.

The club boss said, “We need to assess what we’ve done and make it better for next week.”

“The detail in our crossing today was off. The delivery needed to be better. If you look at it, there’s spaces where we’ve cut in and it’s just slashing at the ball. That’s why I say it was uncharacteristic.”

“I looked at it and thought, ‘changes?’ But actually we had control of the game for quite a lot of it. But we weren’t ruthless enough in that final third and you’ve got to take your moments in games like this.”

“If [with] their first touch in the box, they score, that’s on us and we have to be better at fixing that.

Skinner gave a positive fitness update on defender Gabby George, who was withdrawn after 53 minutes and replaced by Anna Sandberg.

“I don’t think there’s an injury there.”

George will however need to be assessed more keenly. United are back in action in nine days when they go away to Aston Villa.

Ratcliffe waxes lyrical about key United figure solving club’s biggest headache, he’s the “guy at the coal face”

Manchester United co-owner has hailed the influence of technical director Jason Wilcox, describing him as “the eyes” of the club amid their ongoing efforts to catch up in data analytics.

Wilcox joined United in April last year from Southampton. Initially, his remit was working on all technical areas of the football department to hit the highest standards of performance but his role slightly changed following the departure of Dan Ashworth, who served as sporting director for just five months.

A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Wilcox assumed the bulk of Ashworth’s responsibilities.

Ratcliffe, in an interview with The Times, detailed how Wilcox has been bridging the gap for United as they struggle to keep pace with rival clubs that are far ahead in data analytics.

Ratcliffe told the newspaper, “The biggest correlation is between success and money. But then Manchester United broke the mould, because they spent the money so poorly. Then another thing came into play, which was hugely underestimated and Manchester United never saw it. They didn’t notice that there were two clubs who used to be in the third tier in 2006-07, a third of the size of United, who were both bought by betting companies.”

“Who had immense amounts of computing power and data analysis and with a much, much smaller budget, spent their money so much better than Manchester United that they are now ahead of them.”

“United completely missed the data revolution, which Brighton and Brentford didn’t, which Liverpool didn’t either. Liverpool had Ian Graham analysing data between 2012 and 2023. They brought in Jürgen Klopp and they had Michael Edwards as sporting director and Graham, who is the genius in football on data analytics.”

“So you had that team of three who then built an extremely intelligent squad between 2015 and 2018 that went on to win everything on the planet. Edwards, who would look at 20 videos for every player that they considered buying, and Graham, who would look at the data of every single minute that footballer had played in his life. And then he had Klopp who had a footballer’s view.”

“Graham was the forerunner and United missed out. We’re still missing out, because we still don’t have data analysis at United. All we’ve got is Jason’s eyes. And Jason, for me, is a guy at the coal face. He ran the academy at Manchester City. Txiki Begiristain, I know, thought Jason had the best eyes in the club.”

“He’s a warm character, he’s got a sense of humour, he knows what he’s talking about, he’s got a really good relationship with Ruben. So, you know, if you compare that with last season when we had Erik and John Murtough [as football director], it’s chalk and cheese.”

“Jason knows what’s working, what’s not working in terms of how Ruben’s playing, his system, which players he’s picking, which players we are going to buy in the future. And Jason’s got views on all of those things. And when I listen to Jason speak, I get what he’s saying.”

Ratcliffe added, “But what he can’t do is watch every match. And that’s what the computer does. The computer can watch every match that every player has played in every league for every year they’ve ever played football. So you have to marry the two pieces of data and then it tells you something. And that’s what Brighton and Brentford have done.”

“And also it’s then much easier to spot the younger talent because the computer does that. Jason can tell you every good 21-year-old, but not every good 16-year-old.”

“So build a management team, then we have to get it back onto a stable footing, and this is our unpleasant year, when we have to make all those not particularly nice decisions, letting people go, that sort of stuff. That’ll all be done in the summer and then it’s about recruitment. You can have a fancy stadium, but if you haven’t got recruitment right you’re not going to win football matches.”

The British businessman admitted that French outfit Nice have been a lot better since INEOS’ reduced involvement in their affairs, as a result of multi-club ownership rules.

He went on to point out how Chelsea were initially hammered for their recruitment decisions under Todd Boehly and Clearlake’s ownership but in hindsight, it seems that they did well. Ratcliffe predicted that it will be the same for United.

The 72-year-old continued, “I genuinely believe in the things that we’re doing, and I do think that we’ve got the right people in place. I don’t think we’ll get there without making more mistakes because we’re not perfect, but I do think the trajectory will start to step up after the summer.”

“What we want is a lean, efficient, elite organisation of about 700 people, not a fat organisation where people are not really focused, confused because there are too many people doing too many things that are not really relevant or important. And to be honest with you, if I fail, I’ll step down. But I don’t think I’ll fail. As soon as we start playing good football and start winning, it will change.”

United are back in action on Sunday when they go away to Leicester City.

Man Utd news: Real Madrid ready to ‘launch offensive’ for star who’s been warned about next move

Real Madrid could reportedly look to ‘launch a future offensive’ to land Kobbie Mainoo, after he was issued a warning about moving abroad of late.

Mainoo is reportedly asking for a big pay rise whether he stays at Old Trafford or goes. Indeed, currently earning £20,000 per week, it’s believed the midfielder wants £150,000 per week.

That seems much more in line with a promising star who has 60 United games under his belt.

But other clubs would surely be willing to pay Mainoo what he wants if not United. Chelsea have a long-term interest and seemingly remain keen to land the midfielder, while Real Madrid are also in the race now.

According to reports in Spain, his contract situation is seen as a potential opportunity for Real, who may look to land him in the future, though perhaps not immediately. Indeed, he’s not said to be an immediate priority, but an ‘attractive target for the future’.

That would suggest Real would be willing to pay Mainoo what he wants, and if United ‘fails to secure his continued presence’ then Los Blancos ‘could launch a future offensive’ to add him to the side.

Mainoo has recently been told to be careful when picking his next move by former Red Devil Paul Parker.

“If he moves, it would be a big change in his short career so far because he’s been at Manchester United for all his life. If he wants to go abroad and move to a big club in Europe, one that’s going to educate him on a different style of football, then he’s got to choose that club wisely. He’s got to be clever,” he said.

“At this moment in time, do I believe what’s being reported? Not really.”

Liverpool transfer: Reds ‘close to sealing’ £50m signing as rivals hijack another Man Utd target

Premier League side Liverpool are closing in on the signing of Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes amid links to Man Utd, according to reports.

The Reds have had a brilliant season in the Premier League under Arne Slot with the Dutchman leading them to top spot in the table after 29 matches.

Liverpool extended their lead at the summit to 15 points from second-placed Arsenal after the Reds beat Southampton 3-1 last weekend.

It would take a minor miracle for the Gunners to beat Liverpool to the title from here, although Arsenal do have a game in hand and still have to play the Reds before the end of the season.

Liverpool have a week off from Premier League action as they contest the League Cup final against Newcastle United on Sunday at Wembley after exiting the Champions League last 16 against Paris Saint-Germain in midweek.

Their brilliant first season under Slot is all the more impressive after the lack of summer and winter recruitment from the Liverpool board.

Federico Chiesa has been the only signing since Slot arrived that has been for the first team this season with Liverpool also bringing in Giorgi Mamardashvili before immediately sending him back out on loan to Valencia.

Slot is not sure whether he will have key trio Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk with all three out of contract at the end of the season.

And now Liverpool are wasting no time in lining up deals for the summer with reports in Brazil (via Anfield Watch) claiming that the Reds are ‘close to sealing’ a deal for Wolves midfielder Gomes.

Relaying a report from Brazilian outlet Gazete do Urubu, Anfield Watch add:

‘They suggest several major European clubs want to sign Gomes, as well as Manchester United, who currently sit 14th in the Premier League. It’s Liverpool, though, who lead this race.

‘The Flamengo outlet is reporting on this because of a heft sell-on clause in Gomes’s contract. He joined Wolves from the Brazilian giants, who now stand to make 14 per cent on any profit in his sale.

‘They’re also talking about a sale of around €60m (£50m) – that’s a large chunk of change for Flamengo.’

If Man Utd miss out on Gomes too that will be two bits of bad news in two days for the Red Devils after Chelsea hijacked their move for Sporting CP winger Geovany Quenda.

Speaking last year about potential interest in Gomes, Wolves sporting director Matt Hobbs said: “The way he is playing, there will be clubs watching him for sure. I know there are.

“The perfect player for us might not be someone else’s perfect player but Joao fits here.

“They are not always going to work, but you stand more chance of them working if you have a manager who believes in them and plays them.”
