Man Utd ‘increase’ Rashford price as Amorim ‘decision’, INEOS stance on ‘striking’ Villa ‘agreement’ surfaces

According to reports, Manchester United have increased their asking price for Marcus Rashford, while Ruben Amorim has ‘made a decision’ on his return.

Rashford left Man Utd during this year’s winter transfer window as he joined Premier League rivals Aston Villa on loan with an option to buy.

The England international’s form dramatically declined after he scored 30 goals for Man Utd in all competitions during the 2022/23 campaign.

It was hoped that the appointment of Amorim would help to kickstart Rashford’s career at Old Trafford, but the pair butted heads en route to him leaving in January.

Rashford’s performances have picked up in recent weeks as he’s earned an England recall, but it remains to be seen whether Aston Villa will make his move permanent this summer.

It’s been widely reported that the buy option is set at around £40m, but a report from The Daily Star claims Man Utd want £60m for their academy product.

The report also claims Amorim has ‘made a decision’ on his future and has ‘refused to give Rashford a lifeline’.

‘Ruben Amorim will not offer Marcus Rashford a Manchester United lifeline this summer.

‘And United bosses will look to strike a permanent deal with Aston Villa for Rashford in the region of £60m.’

Rasmus Hojlund is also linked with an exit from Man Utd and Fabrizio Romano claims “clubs are starting to reach out” to the club about the forward.

“Man Utd are really planning to bring in an important striker in the summer transfer window and so I’m told that clubs are starting to reach out to Man Utd and people close to Hojlund to understand his availability for the summer, how much he could cost,” Romano said.

“There is interest in Hojlund and there could be movement.

“If Man Utd, as we expect, will bring in an important striker in the summer, let’s see what happens with Hojlund because there are clubs that are really interested and, in terms of money, in case Man Utd receive a good proposal it could be an opportunity.

“So Hojlund is going to be one to watch in the summer transfer window with interest from several countries, including Italy, where he did very well as an Atalanta player before joining.”

28-yo United star set for Saudi move as Amorim makes offloading him “a priority”, his replacements have already been found – report

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is reportedly poised to seal a move to the Saudi Pro League during the upcoming summer transfer window.

Onana’s tenure at United has been marred by a string of high-profile errors, casting a constant shadow of uncertainty over his performances.

He has faced yet another challenging season, sparking speculation that United may seek a more reliable replacement.

A previous report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Onana has no intention of departing Old Trafford as United are the only club he wishes to play for.

More recently, it was claimed the Cameroonian is confident he retains the backing and support of Ruben Amorim.

However, The Sun now reveal that the Red Devils are prepared to sell him and have even identified two potential replacements.

According to the newspaper, “Manchester United’s Andre Onana looks set for Saudi Arabia leaving Ruben Amorim eyeing two of Europe’s hottest young keepers.”

It’s understood that the goalkeeper position is not one United planned to address in the summer but Onana’s howlers have made it necessary. As such, if Saudi’s interest in the 28-year-old materialises, Amorim “would make it a priority.”

Among the plethora of shot-stoppers that United have been linked to over the past few weeks and months, The Sun states that Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens and Lille’s Lucas Chevalier are the club’s main targets.

United are likely to face stiff competition from Manchester City for Lammens and Chevalier. Both Manchester clubs have scouted the two goalkeepers extensively and are eyeing them.

Lammens is rated at £30m while Lille are believed to want £40m to sanction Chevalier’s exit.

Lammens’ and Chevalier’s contracts with their respective clubs both expire in 2027.

Man Utd: Lingard reveals unusual dressing room rule Rooney implemented to stop players becoming ‘flash’

Former Manchester United winger Jesse Lingard claims club legend Wayne Rooney implemented a strict rule in the dressing room.

Lingard and Rooney played together at Man Utd as the former became a first-team regular during the 2015/16 campaign.

The 32-year-old winger made 232 appearances for boyhood club Man Utd before leaving upon the expiry of his contract in 2022.

The former England international scored nine goals in 16 Premier League appearances during his sensational loan spell at West Ham, but he did not capitalise on this stint.

Lingard decided against making his move permanent and returned to being a bit-part player for Man Utd before he had an unsuccessful year at Nottingham Forest. He was a free agent for the first six months of this season before he penned a two-year deal with FC Seoul.

In a new interview, he has responded to suggestions that he and other former players have ‘destroyed the culture’ at Man Utd and revealed a rule implemented by Rooney.

“I don’t even really go on [social media] anymore but I did see that and just asked the guy to explain it,” Lingard told The Daily Mail.

READ: Bruno Fernandes the undroppable’s undroppable but Liverpool have some tired bodies

‘We actually got some nice responses from other people. I love Paul to bits. He’s one of my best friends. We speak every day.

“But I was thinking, ‘What was the culture, anyway?’.

“With us being in the first team, you know, it’s obviously knowing the right place, the right time to do things and stuff like that.

“But ruining culture? We only tried to make it stronger. We responded to success and we smiled and laughed and we were winning games. So that is good culture, yeah?

He continued: “Wayne Rooney told me: ‘Don’t buy your first car until you’ve played 50 games.’ Obviously 50 games came and I drove in a Range Rover, parked up and Rooney is like: ‘Whose is that? Have you played 50 games now?’.

“And that was me accepted. I have never tried to be flash. Of course, if you have nice things sometimes you wanna show them. But the photographers would follow me and take pictures of me in my car every time we drove in.”

Lingard has also refuted suggestions that he is a “failure” as he feels his career has been an “achievement”

“I 100 per cent do not feel failure, I feel achievement,” Lingard added.

“You just gotta look at my story from seven years old, a kid from Warrington making it all the way through. The percentages of that are like 0.2 per cent or something. I got chosen.

“You have to work hard. Go to digs and leave your family at 12 years old and move schools and be in a different environment.

“And I was the smallest. I was tiny. Sometimes I had to play down a year. So I’ve been through the mill, from a football point of view.”

Ruben Amorim to refuse Jarrad Branthwaite deal this summer, but he’s still part of the masterplan – opinion

This week reports have started to emerge that Manchester United are still keen to sign Jarrad Branthwaite from Everton.

United were desperate to acquire the services of the young centre back last summer, but the Toffees’ insistence on a fee in excess of £70 million for the player proved to be an insurmountable stumbling block, and Matthijs de Ligt was signed for £42 million instead.

However, Branthwaite has not signed a new deal at Everton and with his contract expiring in 2027, this summer will be the last in which Everton can hope to get decent money for him.

The perfect centre back signing

It is easy to see why INEOS are keen on a deal. The fact that the 22 year old is two-footed would be a huge plus, he is homegrown and his extensive Premier League experience at such a young age makes him the perfect profile for Ruben Amorim’s revolution.

Although Branthwaite agreed personal terms with United last summer, his desire for Champions League football could be an issue this time around unless Amorim’s men win the Europa League. In addition, Everton are still playing hard ball over the fee, with INEOS believing they could get a deal over the line at £50 million this time around.

A question of priorities

That being said, unless some miracle were to happen to resolve United’s financial situation, investing even £50 million in the England man would be a huge mistake this summer.

Regardless of whether or not he is a world class defender – an issue that is, in itself, much debated – the simple fact is that centre back is surely now the lowest priority in terms of positions to be strengthened at Old Trafford.

Even though Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans are likely to leave at the end of the season, and even though three centre backs are required in Amorim’s system, there is still plenty of strength in depth compared to other areas.

De Ligt, Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, Leny Yoro and Heaven are all specialist centre backs, while Luke Shaw, Noussair Mazraoui and even Casemiro (if he stays at the club) are capable backups. There are also other academy stars close to making the step up, including England U18 international Tyler Fredricson.

Essentially, there will be two Premier League standard players for each position.

Compare that with wing backs. Two wing backs are needed in the starting XI, yet only Patrick Dorgu is a specialist in the role. Diogo Dalot, Amad and Mazraoui have all tried to fill in, but none of them look a natural, with Dalot and Mazraoui not gifted enough in attack and Amad not natural enough in defence. At least one wing back, arguably two, must be a higher priority than a centre back.

United are also light in central midfield. Christian Eriksen is expected to leave the club and Casemiro, too, could be on his way. This leaves Manuel Ugarte, Kobbie Mainoo and Toby Collyer as the only specialists, with Bruno Fernandes also considered by Amorim to be an eight.

Clearly, even with young talent coming through, at least one more six and one more eight will be required in the summer.

In terms of support forwards (or twin 10s), it is likely that Marcus Rashford and Antony will be sold and reports suggest Alejandro Garnacho will also leave. With Fernandes more likely deployed in midfield, this leaves Mason Mount, Josh Zirkzee and Amad as potentially the only options. Again, one, ideally two, incoming players will be required, assuming all of the above.

It hardly needs stating that a new striker is needed. Even if Rasmus Hojlund finds some consistent form, he can’t carry the load alone and at 17, Chido Obi needs to be handled carefully. A world-class striker or someone very close to that level is a must, and will likely take a big chunk of the transfer budget.

United’s need for a top goalkeeper is also probably greater than that of a centre back. Andre Onana’s form since joining the club has been erratic to say the least. INEOS could and perhaps should be looking to replace him with a more reliable pair of hands. Altay Bayindir briefly looked as if he could step up, with a sensational performance against Arsenal in the FA Cup, but a badly timed injury has left the issue unresolved.

The waiting game

All this leaves Branthwaite a low priority, for now at least. However, Harry Maguire’s deal will expire in the summer of 2026 and a replacement may then be needed.

Everton’s greed with regard to the transfer fee could play to United’s advantage in that respect. If they are stubborn and do not sell Branthwaite to anyone else this summer, then by the January 2026 window he will only have 18 months left on his contract and Maguire will only have six months left on his.

At that stage, a deal somewhere in the region of £40m could be struck, potentially dropping even further in summer 2026.

Ronaldo responds to Hojlund’s celebration

Cristiano Ronaldo in action for Portugal

Sunday 23 March 2025 10:30

Rasmus Hojlund’s imitation of Cristiano Ronaldo’s iconic ‘Siuu’ celebration has stirred plenty of discussion – but what did the legendary former Red himself think of it?

Our no.9 pulled off the celebration after stepping off the bench to score a 78th-minute winner for Denmark against Portugal in the first leg of their UEFA Nations League quarter-final.

Speaking ahead of the second leg in Lisbon tonight (Sunday), Cristiano has told reporters that he believes the 22-year-old striker copying his famous pose “wasn’t an act of disrespect”.

The 40-year-old said: “For me, it’s not a problem. I know it wasn’t an act of disrespect. I’m smart enough to realise that.

“Not only him, all over the world, several athletes celebrate me. For me, it’s an honour, but I hope he can see my celebration tomorrow [Sunday].”

After Thursday’s game, Rasmus was keen to point out that it was very much a mark of respect to a player he admired so much growing up.

“It’s for my idol,” he told broadcaster TV2. “It wasn’t to mock him or anything. He’s had such a huge impact on me and my football career.

“Maybe it’s a bit ambivalent but to score against him and Portugal, it’s huge. I remember him scoring from a free-kick in 2011, when I went to watch the match, and, since then, I’ve been a huge Cristiano fan.”

As was the case in the first leg, there could be five Reds taking to the field when the tie concludes tonight (Sunday) in the Portuguese capital.

Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot should feature for Portugal, while Hojlund could be joined by his Reds team-mates Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu and Christian Eriksen in the Denmark ranks. Kick-off is at 19:45 GMT – good luck, lads!

Man Utd ‘set to flog’ £47m flop as Amorim ‘eyes’ City, Guardiola ‘battle’ for two ‘top’ replacement ‘targets’

According to reports, Manchester United are ‘set’ to offload Andre Onana this summer amid interest from the Saudi Pro League.

The Red Devils invested around £47m to sign Onana from Serie A giants Inter Milan.

Man Utd signed Onana after former boss Erik ten Hag identified the Cameroon international, who worked with the head coach at Ajax, as his preferred long-term replacement for David De Gea.

Onana took a while to settle after a couple of disastrous performances in the Champions League, but he grew into his debut campaign and was one of United’s better performers in 2023/24.

However, Onana has declined this season and has frequently made mistakes, fuelling speculation linking him with a move elsewhere.

READ: Kane still behind Sancho in ranking of every foreign-based England player

The 28-year-old is eighth in our ranking of this season’s Premier League goalkeepers and Man Utd are linked with several potential replacements ahead of this summer’s window.

A new report from The Sun claims Man Utd are ‘ready to flog’ Onana, who is ‘set for a transfer’ to the Saudi Pro League.

United are reportedly primed for a ‘battle’ with Man City with Ederson also likely to move to the Middle East this summer.

Head coach Ruben Amorim is reportedly ‘eyeing two of Europe’s hottest young goalkeepers’ to replace Onana, but his two ‘top targets’ are also on Man City’s radar.

The report explains:

‘Both Manchester clubs could lose their first-choice No 1 to the Saudi Pro League at the end of the season — with United’s Onana and City’s Ederson set for the Middle East.

‘Guardiola and Amorim have started checking out potential replacements – and the same names top each wanted list.’

‘Royal Antwerp’s highly-rated stopper Senne Lammens is on the radar of a host of Premier League clubs, with Newcastle and West Ham also keen. Lille’s brilliant 23-year-old goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier has been tracked by United and City for months.

‘Lammens, 22, is rated around £30million after bursting on to the scene.

‘Chevalier — like Lammens — is contracted until 2027 but sources claim French club Lille would be willing to do business for around £40m.

‘Ederson, 31, has long been linked with a move to Saudi, and City will not stand in the Brazilian’s way if he wants to leave after eight years.

‘While City were always going to be hunting another keeper in the summer, it was not an obvious position United planned to fill.

‘Yet Onana has made a string of errors this term. And if Saudi interest turns into a firm offer, Amorim would make it a priority.’

The Debate: Premier League or Europa League?

Man United players celebrating a Europa League goal against Real Sociedad

Sunday 23 March 2025 08:44

As we soon embark on the crucial final stage of the season, Manchester United have 27 more Premier League points to fight for and a Europa League quarter-final to prepare for.

The Reds may have had a disappointing campaign by the standards we have set in previous seasons but it could still end on a high note if we can progress all the way in the European competition we won in 2017.

However, with more prize money at stake for each place we can climb in the league and a coveted spot in next season’s Champions League up for grabs if we can lift the trophy in Bilbao on 21 May, what should be the priority for Ruben Amorim’s Reds in the run-in?

That was the question posed during the latest episode of The Debate on MUTV.

When asked which one they would focus on, panellists Danny Simpson, Wes Brown and Harry Robinson each said the Europa League – but host Liam Bradford argued it should be both.

“I don’t think that you can perform well in a cup competition without carrying some momentum over from your league campaign, therefore you have to perform well in the Premier League to be able to perform well in the Europa League,” the MUTV commentator opined.

‘AS MAN UNITED PLAYERS, YOU’VE GOT TO WIN EVERY GAME’

Danny, who made eight first-team appearances for United during the 2007/08 season, feels both competitions are equally important and managing the squad will be key.

“We’ve got a break now then Forest away before playing [Manchester] City, so the lads can play Forest, go for it, play against City at home, it’s a derby so we have to win that,” the former full-back said.

“Going into Lyon, which is away first, what people might not realise is the travelling away and getting back at 2am in the morning. They will then have one day and then get a bus to Newcastle so, for me, for Newcastle I would change the team because we’ve then got the second leg back home against Lyon. You manage it like Sir Alex used to do all of them years ago where he would say ‘you be ready for that game because you’ll get a chance’. We can do that.

“I just think as Man United players you’ve got to win every game. But I do think you can rest one or two [players] and still try to win that game [in the Premier League] looking into Lyon at home. I just think you can do that.”

‘DIFFERENT MINDSET AND MENTALITY IN EUROPE’

Danny’s fellow ex-defender Wes, who knows how it feels to win a European trophy with United, made his case that the Europa League should be top of the agenda simply because of the potential Champions League reward and that European nights just hit differently.

“It would put us in a massive competition for next season because we’re not going to get there in the league,” explained our former no.6, who helped the Reds win the Champions League in 2008 – one of 13 trophies he won in his 15 seasons at Old Trafford.

“I understand going up in the league and every place earns you more money. Yes you’re right, you have to be playing at a good standard in the league but cups are cups. I’m not saying you can switch it on, but I think we’ve got ourselves in this position for a good five seasons now where we’ve always progressed in the Europa and got to a certain point and, for whatever reason, our mindset is we understand we need to win in the cup.

“With all of the injuries we’ve got, I don’t think we can change too much anyway. You’re hoping you play well in the league and say you do get beat by one of the teams, as long as you’ve played well, you’ve created opportunities, you can take the positives into Europe 100 per cent. Like I said, in Europe it’s a different mindset, it’s a different mentality.”

Europa League or Premier League: which would you prioritise for the remainder of the season?

Europa League or Premier League: which would you prioritise for the remainder of the season?

‘WATCHING YOUR TEAM IS ABOUT THOSE MOMENTS’

As we know, anything can happen in a knockout game and Liam made the point that if a refereeing decision was to go against United – like in the last-16 first leg away at Real Sociedad – which leads to the Reds going out against Lyon and we had potentially damaged our chances of finishing higher in the Premier League by prioritising the European competition, it’s a consideration that has to be taken into account.

However, club reporter Harry believes the cup competitions can provide moments that create lasting memories for our legions of fanatical followers around the world.

“If you’re a manager or a fan, watching your team is about those moments and seeing United, for example, against Lyon either home, away or both is a moment,” he explained. “Seeing them then go to play Athletic Club from Bilbao or Rangers – an away game at Ibrox would be a moment.

“If you think about the last two seasons, Erik ten Hag’s first season ended quite disappointingly with the FA Cup final defeat and the league form kind of fizzled out a little bit. But I still look back very fondly on that season because of what we won – the day in February when we beat Newcastle which made it brilliant.

“Going back to last summer, that is one of the best days I’ll ever have as a United fan because we won the FA Cup. You can’t underestimate if you’re talking about momentum and also with a new manager where you need that faith so that when we might lose a game at Old Trafford, the atmosphere is going to be disappointed. But there’s not that anger because there’s a belief as to what’s to come.

“A run in any trophy is what gets you that and those memories where you start to associate ‘that was a great night and Ruben Amorim gave it to me’. That’s what he needs fans to be thinking.”

Victor Lindelof for Sweden

Sunday 23 March 2025 08:41

Two Manchester United players experienced defeat with their countries as the international action continued on Saturday.

James Scanlon made his 11th cap for Gibraltar as they opened their World Cup qualification campaign against Montenegro.

The 18-year-old forward played 83 minutes from the start at the Stadion Kraj Bistrice, before being replaced by Liam Walker.

It started well for Scanlon and his team-mates as Dan Bent gave them a 13th-minute lead but Montenegro came from behind to win 3-1, with former Manchester City striker Stevan Jovetic among the goals. Scott Wiseman’s side will hope to get their first points in Group L against the Czech Republic on Tuesday night.

Ahead of the break, James – who received a maiden first-team call-up for the Europa League quarter-final second-leg win over Real Sociedad – met with our Supporters’ Club in Gibraltar.

Elsewhere, Victor Lindelof’s Sweden suffered a shock 1-0 defeat in a friendly against a Luxembourg side ranked 92nd in the world rankings – 65 places below them – as Seid Korac’s 23rd-minute goal proved decisive.

Victor was an unused substitute at the Stade de Luxembourg so Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak – who was partnered in attack by former United forward Anthony Elanga – took the captain’s armband.

Our no.2 and his team-mates will hope to regain some pride when they host Northern Ireland in another friendly on Tuesday.

There could be as many as six Reds taking to the field for their nations this evening (Sunday).

Portugal – with Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot in their ranks – take on a Denmark side with Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu, Christian Eriksen and Rasmus Hojlund in their squad, in the second leg of their UEFA Nations League quarter-final in Lisbon.

Elsewhere in the competition, Matthijs de Ligt’s Netherlands face Spain at Valencia’s Mestalla Stadium.

Both games are due to kick off at 19:45 GMT – good luck, lads!

United ready to sacrifice €70m winger to bring Victor Osimhen to Old Trafford in sensational swap deal – The Athletic

Manchester United’s need for a ruthless goalscorer is pretty apparent once you look at Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee’s stats this season.

While the Dane has only eight goals, the Dutchman has six. The ex-Atalanta starlet only recently ended his 99-day goalless drought in the Premier League while the summer signing is much more comfortable playing as an attacking midfielder than up top.

Which is why Ruben Amorim has prioritised the addition of a striker once the transfer window opens. A reunion with Viktor Gyokeres was what he was hoping for but the Swede is intent on playing Champions League football, something that might not be on offer at Old Trafford next term.

As a result, Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, currently on loan at Galatasaray, has been elevated to the top spot with the Nigerian setting the Turkish league on fire.

Osimhen fits United’s demands

The 26-year-old has 26 goals and five assists and Napoli are likely to move him on once the season concludes. Gala would love to keep a hold of him but they would struggle to match the Italian side’s asking price while also paying the striker’s humongous wages.

Even the Red Devils would find it hard to satisfy the Serie A giants which is why plenty of swap deal rumours involving Hojlund heading to the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium have been mooted.

But The Athletic‘s reliable journalist Laurie Whitwell had an interesting take on the situation. He revealed on the Inside United podcast (via Givemesport) that Alejandro Garnacho could be the United player to make way.

The Argentine was a January target for the Naples-based outfit but they refused to pay over €55 million for the 20-year-old with United valuing him close to €70 million.

Swap deal involving Garnacho?

Antonio Conte still needs a replacement for Kvicha Kvaratshkhelia and the Carrington graduate could be used as part of a swap deal to land Osimhen.

“In terms of what they want from a striker, I think Osimhen would fit that bill. So I wonder what happens there. The only thing is, Napoli, how much would they want for him?

And would some kind of transfer swap make some kind of sense? Obviously, they’ve been interested in Alejandro Garnacho already. I wouldn’t rule out something like that potentially happening.”

Garnacho also ended his goalscoring drought against Leicester City recently but his finishing has let him down recently. Not to mention attitude issues.

So would Amorim be open to letting the wonderkid leave? He had fought with INEOS to keep him at the club during the winter window. A lot can change from now until the end of the season. An interesting saga worth keeping an eye on.

Newcastle ready to meet £50m valuation for PL attacking genius, United can’t let this happen – report

Newcastle are reportedly ready to meet Brentford’s asking price for Bryan Mbeumo in a bid to beat the likes of Manchester United to his signature.

United are expected to dip into the market this summer to improve their attacking options and Mbeumo is believed to be a player of interest.

The Peoples Person explained in great detail why United should do everything possible to sign Mbeumo, who is enjoying a stellar season.

The 25-year-old has notched 15 goals and provided six assists in 33 appearances across all competitions. His contributions have helped ensure the Bees haven’t missed Ivan Toney too much.

In addition to United, Arsenal and Newcastle have also been linked to Mbeumo and now, CaughtOffisde report that the Magpies have demonstrated a willingness to fork out the £50m Brentford are demanding to sanction the Cameroonian’s exit.

CaughtOffside relay, “The strongest interest may well be coming from Newcastle United, with sources telling CaughtOffside that they’d be willing to meet Brentford’s £50m asking price for the in-form Cameroon international.”

The news outlet adds that the Tyneside outfit are determined to win the race for Mbeumo. He is seen as someone who could seamlessly slot into the team at Newcastle and complement Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon.

It’s understood that Arsenal explored a deal for Mbeumo in January but a deal failed to materialise. The Gunners could make another attempt as they search for more rotation options in attack.

Mbeumo is also on the radar of Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.

From United’s perspective, the biggest concern is that Newcastle not only seem to have the money in place to snap up Mbeumo but there is a chance they’ll also be able to offer him Champions League football.

Eddie Howe’s side currently sit sixth in the Premier League with 47 points, just two behind fourth-placed Chelsea. There is a high likelihood that finishing fifth will secure a Champions League spot, thanks to the competition’s coefficient system.

United’s only route to Champions League qualification is by winning the Europa League.
