Man Utd transfers: United warned by president after scouting ideal replacement for £42million star

Manchester United have identified a new target to play out wide for next season, but it may well be a difficult business decision to pursue.

With the club hoping to reunite Ruben Amorim with the highly-rated youngster Giovani Quenda, they were beaten to the punch by Chelsea, who wrapped up a £42million deal ahead of the summer window last month.

Quenda would have been the perfect addition to play in Amorim’s wing-back system which he has only been able to add one player to since arriving at the club. Given there is set to be a mass exodus of players, he will have to ensure that his squad is built in his image ahead of next season.

One player they have since identified as a replacement for Quenda is Como’s Assane Diao. The 19-year-old has shone since joining Cesc Fabregas’ side and he has scored seven times and provided three assists for both Real Betis and Como this season.

He found the net five times in his first eight Serie A appearances and is a talented player who recently made his debut for the Senegal national team and looks to be on upwards trajectory.

Italian journalist Nicolo Schira reports that the club has started looking at Diao and has claimed that a United scout was in the stands when Como drew 1-1 with Empoli.

It remains unclear whether Como would be open to selling Diao at this stage having just signed him, and both Fabregas and club president Mirwan Suwarso have been vocal about maintaining the club’s current course.

“We have no intention of selling any of our players, at least not in the near future,” Suwarso told Calcio e Finanza last month. “Maybe in three or four years – because it would be naive to say that player sales aren’t part of the business. And we’re not short on money – we are well-backed.”

Amorim’s wide options

Wide players only exist in Amorim’s system as wing-backs, tasked with joining attacks but also requiring great pace and energy to help the team in a defensive shape. It is one reason why a player like Alejandro Garnacho, a typical attacking winger in a 4-3-3 setup, has struggled as he was forced into an inside forward role in the 3-4-3 formation.

Jadon Sancho, Antony and Marcus Rashford will all likely be sold this summer and one of Joshua Zirkzee and Ramsus Hojlund are speculated to exit as well leaving plenty of room for new recruits.

As it stands, there haven’t been many links to players in those positions, but they have been linked with striker reinforcements such as Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike, who has 19 goals this season.

They still have Luke Shaw to eventually return to the fray but they are lacking true, natural players to feature in this system.

Man Utd sanctioned ‘lucrative’ deal in ‘error’ as decision ‘didn’t align with data’ amid ‘internal frustrations’

A new report claims Manchester United’s decision to reward Luke Shaw with a new contract ‘didn’t align with the data’ at the time.

When fit, Shaw is capable of being one of the best full-backs in the Premier League and arguably remains England’s best left-back without the injury factor.

However, the 29-year-old has been marred by injuries at Man Utd and he’s barely featured for the Premier League giants over the past two seasons.

Since the start of the 2023/24 campaign, Shaw has made only 14 Premier League appearances, including only two outings this season.

Shaw recovered from knee and calf issues before the New Year and came off the bench against Ipswich Town and Everton, but he has been out of action with a muscle injury for around four months.

Man Utd have also been without Tyrell Malacia, so head coach Ruben Amorim has had limited options at left wing-back and had to enter the market to sign Patrick Dorgu in January for around £25m.

Shaw has experienced his injury woes after he shone for Man Utd during the 2022/23 campaign. His form this season earned him a new four-year contract, but they will regret their decision to extend the 29-year-old’s deal.

A new report from The Telegraph claims Man Utd have been impacted by ‘market misjudgements’, with an ‘error’ made with Shaw.

The report delved into Dominic Jordan’s role at Man Utd before his exit in July 2024. He served as their director of data science before being let go as part of the first round of staff redundancies sanctioned by INEOS chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

The report revealed:

‘Jordan’s team were tasked with building the statistical models covering physical and technical performance, injury history and financial profiling as well as providing the benchmarking to adequately compensate for the relative strengths or weaknesses of a competition against the Premier League.

‘In that regard, fans will justifiably wonder how United then continued to make so many errors of judgement in the market. Some of those frustrations were also felt internally.

‘Ultimately, the work of a data team is undermined if the red flags they raise – and recommendations they make – are overlooked as decision-makers act out of desperation or indulge a manager’s fancy.

‘In April 2023, United opted to award Luke Shaw a new four-year contract on highly lucrative terms that did not align with the data on the England left-back’s worrying injury record. Shaw had averaged just 17 Premier League starts over nine seasons and, in the two years since being handed that deal, he has made just 20 league starts, his last coming 13 months ago.’

Major setback for Amorim as “natural goalscorer” ruled out of Forest clash, Leicester City debutant called up – report

Manchester United’s first-team is set to return to Premier League action on Tuesday after the international break with an away trip to face high-flying Nottingham Forest.

Ruben Amorim has already revealed that Leny Yoro and Harry Maguire are expected to be back in contention while quite a few other key players are also close to making full recoveries.

But as revealed by The Daily Mail, the head coach will be without Chido Obi, who has made four substitute appearances in the last two months due to the lack of goalscorers at the Portuguese tactician’s disposal.

While he has impressed the coach in his cameos, the U18s are gearing up for the all-important FA Youth Cup semi-final against Aston Villa on Monday and it has been decided that Adam Lawrence’s team needs him more.

Chido Obi set to return to U18s

“Manchester United have allowed Chido Obi to return to the Under-18s for tonight’s crucial FA Youth Cup semi-final against Aston Villa.

“Mail Sport understands Obi is part of United’s travelling squad heading to Villa Park in what represents a huge boost to Under-18 boss Adam Lawrence.”

He has seven goals in three appearances in the competition this season, including a stunning hat-trick against Chelsea in the fifth round. The U18 coach had termed him a “natural goalscorer” after his heroics on the night.

He was sorely missed in the quarter-final but the U18s emerged triumphant in an epic clash against Arsenal and now, with him back, the team will be confident of getting past Villa.

However, Lawrence will not be able to call upon Harry Amass, who recently made his senior debut in the league game against Leicester City.

Amass remains with senior team

“Mail Sport understands Harry Amass will not be involved this evening as he could feature against Nottingham Forest on Tuesday. Amass, 18, made his senior debut in United’s 3-0 win over Leicester before the international break.

With Luke Shaw not yet ready, Amorim feels Amass might be needed against Forest especially with Diogo Dalot struggling at the wingback position.

Interestingly, should United get past Villa, they could set-up a mouthwatering Manchester derby in the final with Manchester City taking on Watford in the other semi-final.

In that case, the final is likely to be held at Old Trafford, which should give the youngsters added incentive to win tonight. United had last won the competition back in the 2021/22 season with Alejandro Garnacho the star of the show that time.

United’s Del Piero-esque target set to stay put with club determined to avoid repeat of Huijsen blunder – report

Manchester United transfer target Kenan Yildiz has been taken off the market by Juventus who are desperate not to repeat their Dean Huijsen bungle, according to reports.

The Turkish forward has been a sensation for the Serie A giants during a difficult season, becoming the youngest Juventus player since Alessandro del Piero to score on his Champions League debut.

On Saturday he became the club’s all-time top-scoring teenager, taking that title from Moise Kean with the winning goal against Genoa.

The 1-0 win was the first of Igor Tudor’s reign in the Juventus dugout after Thiago Motta was sacked last week, and the change of manager seems to coincide with a newfound resolve to keep the 19-year-old at the club.

La Gazzetta dello Sport report that a cash injection from the club’s majority owners, which could be worth up to €110m, is imminent, and this would remove the need to sell their most exciting player.

Champions League qualification remains financially “fundamental” for the club, and missing out would still force them into making some sales.

But La Gazzetta claim that the Turkish starboy should now be protected from a summer departure, with the Old Lady instead more likely to look to Andrea Cambiaso, Samuel Mbangula and United-linked striker Dusan Vlahovic to make some money.

Departures from the Allianz Stadium will be scrutinised more closely than ever, with the club red-faced after allowing young defender Huijsen to join Bournemouth for €15m last year.

He has gone on to become one of the best young centre-backs in Europe, with clubs including United and Real Madrid ready to do battle to sign him in the summer.

For his part, Yildiz reportedly wants to stay in Turin, where he “considers himself at home.”

The newspaper, which noted the similarities between the forward’s performance on Saturday and club legend Del Piero, claim that there are “many suitors” for the forward, but for him they “represent flattery but not temptation.”

The report continues that Juventus “never really thought about selling him but were afraid of having to do so to save the accounts.”

Now that they are set for John Elkann’s multi-million-Euro lifeline, they plan to “study a strategy to try to keep him in the summer, when half of Europe could try to tempt the club.”

“Returning this season for sure”: Amorim gives crucial injury update on several key players

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim says Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro will return to the squad ahead of his team’s Premier League clash with high-flying Nottingham Forest tomorrow.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference ahead of the game, Amorim was asked about player fitness.

“Luke [Shaw] is not ready yet,” he said. “We are starting to do some drills with the team but we are building Luke.

“Mason Mount is feeling better but he was already on the bench the last game.

“Kobbie [Mainoo] is almost returning but he is not ready for this game. Jonny Evans is recovering, Ayden is recovering. Licha [Martinez] is out, I think that’s it.

“[Harry] Maguire is also ready to go to the game and [Leny] Yoro, yes.”

When pressed on Heaven’s injury, the boss replied:

“It was not so serious. He’s recovering, he’s not ready to play but he’s going to return this season, for sure.”

On the mood inside the dressing room, Amorim said:

“I think I can say that I am really confident and the players are more confident. The energy is different, but I know that could change with results. We know we have to improve and we are ready for these final two months of this season.”

In response to a question about his targets for the rest of the season, the head coach said:

“I don’t know which place we are going to finish in, but we want to win games. We still have matches to finish in a different position. We are more confident, so we are looking up. We want to win games and are looking up at the moment.”

The discussion then went on to the hectic schedule awaiting United in April.

“We had that kind of schedule in the last weeks with less players,” he noted. “It is really important for us to have these players available for us to fight. I think it is a very good moment in our season. I know we will have at least three games in the Premier League that are really tough. The Europa League is also really important.”

Amorim was then asked what he felt about Marcus Rashford’s form at Aston Villa, where he is is on a six-month loan. The boss was somewhat cool in response, saying:

“”We have a lot of games to play and I am focused on my team and my players. Rashford is not my player at the moment, but I am happy when our players are playing well on loan.”

On to tomorrow’s game, and Amorim was asked to comment on countryman Nuno Espirito Santo’s achievements at the City Ground, where he has guided his team to the Champions League places in the league and to an FA Cup semi-final.

“I am not surprised, he is a top manager,” the boss said. “The environment will be really nice, they are doing amazing. But we want to continue to win games.”

Chido Obi’s inclusion in tonight’s FA Youth Cup semi-final squad was also discussed, as it will mean he is unlikely to feature for the first team tomorrow.

“We try to imagine next the game, we have to give minutes to the kid,” Amorim said. “We are trying to win that competition, to build something with the youth. Chido needs to play also, so we are helping team and player.”

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has explained the thinking behind the big decision over Chido Obi’s involvement in the FA Youth Cup.

The striker has helped Adam Lawrence’s side reach the last four of the competition but missed the extra-time triumph over his former club Arsenal, due to being needed at first-team level.

As the Under-18s prepare to face Aston Villa in a high-profile encounter tonight (Monday), Ruben confirmed that the young attacker has been allowed to feature at Villa Park, in the 19:00 BST kick-off.

“He is going to play today,” said Amorim.  “So we are trying to to manage everything and Chido needs to play also, so we are helping the team and the player.

“We try to imagine next the game, we have to give minutes to the kid. We are trying to win that competition, to build something with the youth.”

Obi has made four senior appearances in total, after making his debut against Tottenham Hotspur, and came off the bench in our most recent outing, the 3-0 win at Leicester City before the international break.

He made his bow for Denmark Under-21s last week.

Ruben’s men are in action on Tuesday night at Nottingham Forest, before the Manchester derby against City at the weekend.

Monday 31 March 2025 13:32

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has provided a positive update on the injury Ayden Heaven sustained during our Premier League win at Leicester City last time out.

The young defender was forced off during the early stages of the second half at the King Power Stadium, following a painful-looking challenge with Foxes striker Patson Daka.

Heaven looked to be in pain while exiting the pitch and it was a disappointing setback for the prospect, after recent standout performances against Real Sociedad and former club Arsenal.

Following a period of assessment at Carrington over the international break, it has emerged that Ayden’s injury is not as bad as initially feared.

The good news, according to Ruben, is that he will play against this season.

Speaking to reporters on Monday afternoon, to preview United’s return to Premier League action at Nottingham Forest, Amorim gave this update on his young defender.

“It was not so serious so he is recovering. He is not ready to play [against Forest] but he is going to return this season, for sure.”

Team news for Forest encounter

Monday 31 March 2025 13:30

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has provided an update on his squad, ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Nottingham Forest.

By the time the 20:00 BST kick-off rolls around at the City Ground, it will have been 16 days since we were last in action, for the 3-0 victory at Leicester City 30 miles south of Forest’s home.

Mason Mount returned to the squad at the King Power Stadium before the break as an unused substitute, and he could be in line for a first appearance since December, while Ruben’s options have been further boosted by the return of five players to training last week, including defenders Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Leny Yoro.

While Amorim admitted that Shaw is not yet prepared to make a comeback, he said Maguire and Yoro are available for the clash with the Premier League’s third-placed side.

There is further good news as Kobbie Mainoo is not far off a return and Ayden Heaven’s injury – suffered at Leicester – is not as serious as first feared, with Amorim confirming he would be able to play again this season.

“Luke is not ready yet,” said Ruben in his pre-match press conference.

“We are starting doing some drills with the team. But we are getting Luke, Mason is feeling better, he was already on the bench in the last game.

“I think Kobbie is almost returning also but not ready for this game. Jonny Evans is recovering, Ayden is recovering.

“Who else? Licha is out you know, I think that’s it. Maguire is also ready to go to the game. Yoro, yes.”

Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu can play in the Premier League for the first time since February, as he has now served the three-match suspension he received for being sent off against Ipswich Town.

Chido Obi is with the Under-18s for Monday’s FA Youth Cup semi-final at Aston Villa.

FOREST’S TEAM NEWS

Nuno Espirito Santo has admitted Chris Wood is a major doubt for the game, after injuring his hip on international duty with New Zealand.

The hosts’ top scorer missed the Emirates FA Cup quarter-final success at Brighton & Hove Albion, as Forest progressed via a penalty shootout.

“Let’s wait and see,” he said. “It is going to be day by day we have to assess him.

“It is all about the pain he has. It was a big impact on his hip and it is very painful. We have to assess him.”

Meanwhile, Morgan Gibbs-White was withdrawn moments before the end of extra-time, after earlier colliding with a post.

“We are going to assess him,” added Espirito Santo. “He had a big contact against the post. His leg was not okay and he was struggling.”

Back-up keeper Carlos Miguel has also picked up an injury.

Man Utd: Amorim names two Red Devils ‘ready’ to return vs Forest; drops verdict on Rashford loan

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has provided an injury update, with two of his players “ready” to return against Nottingham Forest.

Man Utd’s first game after the international break is against Champions League-chasing Nottingham Forest at The City Ground on Tuesday night.

The Red Devils lost 3-2 in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford in December, and Forest head into Tuesday’s match as the favourites as they look to boost their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.

Amorim‘s side have nothing to play for in the Premier League as they are languishing in the bottom half of the table, but they could do with building momentum before their Europa League quarter-final against Lyon.

Speaking ahead of Man Utd’s match against Forest, Amorim confirmed Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro are “ready” to feature.

“Luke [Shaw] is not ready yet. We are starting to do some drills with the team but we are building Luke,” Amorim revealed.

“Mason Mount is feeling better but he was on the bench in the last game, Kobbie [Mainoo] is almost ready, Jonny [Evans] is recovering, [Lisandro Martinez] is out.

“[Harry] Maguire is also ready to go to the game and [Leny] Yoro, yes.”

On teenager Ayden Heaven, he added: “It is not so serious. He is recovering.

“He is not yet ready to play but he will return this season, for sure.”

Amorim was also asked about Marcus Rashford’s return to form at Aston Villa and delivered a blunt response to the question.

“We have a lot of games to play and I am focused on my team and my players and Rashford is not my player at the moment,” Amorim responded.

“But every player that performs well on loan is good news for my club so we are happy with that.”

Man Utd are enduring a woeful season, but Amorim insists they are “looking up” heading into the final few months of this campaign.

“You can say I am really confident. I feel the players are more confident, the energy is different. But I also know that can change with results,” Amorim said.

“We are focused on maintaining the energy and we are working on some things we can improve a lot. Even winning the games, we can acknowledge that we have a lot to improve. But we are in a different moment, more confident and we are ready for the final two months of the season.
